We are very sad to tell you that Stuart Cave passed away suddenly at his home on 16th February 2020.

Stuart was a very popular local teacher for many years and an exceptionally gifted musician and entertainer playing all manner of stringed instruments and performing in his own barn dance band. Additionally he was a church organist who preferred to play his guitar!

Stuart retired to Portland, Dorset where he was a well known local character taking on the role of Town Crier and also playing mediaeval music on his lute at Portland Castle.

As he sported a large beard he was also in great demand as Father Christmas!

Without doubt Stuart was an irreplaceable one-off and will be sorely missed by all.

Landlady forced to pay Tenant £12,600 The case of Liaw v Sohal saw the tenant walking away with 7 times as much money as she paid in deposit. This was largely due to the breaches committed by the Landlady.

The Tenant’s Assured Shorthold Tenancy began in October of 2013, the deposit for which was £2,100. The Tenant stayed in the property for 3 years and her Assured Shorthold Tenancy was renewed each year. When the tenant left in October of 2016, the deposit was not returned. The Tenant claimed against the Landlady in order to (a) recover the deposit and (b) penalise her for failing to provide the prescribed information.

The Court was presented with evidence of a renewal agreement between the parties as well as evidence for prescribed information Nastassia Khilkevich having been served. However, the Court Solicitor concluded that the letter presented by the Landlady to prove the service of the prescribed information was not genuine. The Court also accepted the Tenant’s evidence indicating a renewal agreement each year. It was held that the deposit should be returned to the Tenant. The sum of the penalty payable by the Landlady was held to be twice the value of the deposit (£4,200) and it was further decided that this penalty needed to be paid for each of the 3 renewed tenancies in respect of which prescribed information was not served.

The stark difference between the deposit and the penalty shows just how vital the service of prescribed information is. As a landowner, it is important to make sure that proper procedure is followed. For help with this or any other landlord and tenant issue, please contact us.

All of these things produce the symptoms i have mentioned and I think we would all agree treating someone with hay fever the same way as a person suffering with flu as ridiculous. If you apply this perspective to mental health you can see how unhelpful some of the rigid thinking of the past has been. A symptom is a symptom and can be brought about by varying things. Understanding this offer's a doorway though which to move forward.

The Old House As the two sisters passed the old rocking horse stroking it's fine mane, running their young fingers through to make patterns, finally as always touching the stud in it's ear for luck. Picking up the corner of the patchwork quilt and lifting it up onto the brass and iron bedstead, so that hidden treasures underneath could be sorted through. Always exciting, even if this wasn't the first time they had done this.

A heavy wooden box, again well made, indeed made to last, the brass lock undone, (keys seemed to be lost). Inside a heap of small long boxes, with a sliding lid, we recognised the contents, little black blocks with white inserts, different numbers on each. Must have come from the Knife and Cleaver, or the Chequers, which my Great Grandparents kept years ago.

A box also was kept downstairs in the living room. (It is strange how things go round. When houses were first built, just one room, then as time went on a floor added for bedrooms.

Then downstairs divided up, as times changed one room living has come back in fashion. We had that year's ago.!) We used the dominoes to line them up in various patterns, each seeing who could do the longest line and knock them over the fastest.

Simple game, we never played dominoes, as was thought a boy's game. How times have changed, not before time. Women are good at most games today. However we did play cards, Happy Families, Snap etc, but not with playing cards. Still find cards boring !! The painting boxes, held a fascination, as underneath each little palette of paint a name. Remember scarlet, indigo, aqua, all the names seemed exotic, from faraway lands. When today you look at colour paint charts the names today are just as interesting..

The box had kept the lead soldiers in good condition, probably hadn't been played with since the War, when Percy, Brian and Colin our evacuees had stayed. Thinking back they came to stop during school holidays until they were called up for service in The Forces, one the Army, one the Navy, one the R.A.F. Always kept in touch, today just Percy left. We used to go on long country walks, up the lanes, the fields, the woods, during, what seemed endless hot summer days, around Houghton Conquest. Loved them coming. They taught me to enjoy playing cricket and different ball games, that in turn passed on to our friends. It must have been them who taught me to climb trees, as Dad had no trees from where he lived in the city, cannot remember Mum doing so. Learn I did, have the scars to prove it, as on falling down the damson tree, had to wait for Dad to come home from work, travelling on the bus, to have the leg stitched up at Bedford hospital. My memory of if I still went to school with my bandaged leg, can't recall.

Knowing how things were dealt with at that time, would have gone, unless it was school holidays.!? Did teach my boys, by example how to climb trees, when they were very small, up the Moors.

The toys that were an absolute bliss, that were kept in that wooden box, were precious, made by prisoners of war, not sure if it was the German or Italian men, to earn a few pennies during their stay in Ampthill Park. They used scrap wood, whatever could be could to hand, cleverly, carving into much loved objects. The ones we had were a bat, with a central hole, so that strings tied to a circle of carved chickens, pecking at corn, (little bits of wood) were passed through the hole so when you pulled the strings the hens moved.

Very clever, and much loved toy.

Snowdrops and Crocus have certainly thought so, and Daffodils everywhere are shaking their heads as the fierce winds of February become a distant memory. What is in store for members during the months of Spring ?

A visit to Hyde Park in March – Kensington Palace no less, and the Serpentine galleries on the 11th March, followed by a visit to Deene Park in Northamptonshire on the 14th of May, a glorious Tudor family mansion with fascinating memorabilia of the Crimean War on show; blessed with a glorious garden to stroll through.

Our audio-visual lecture presentations are equally varied: on the 26th March Timothy Walker will tell us how the Impressionists, and Post impressionists have influenced garden design in the 21st century. Timothy is a hugely experienced and knowledgeable lecturer as well as a practical, prizewinning gardener.

On the 30th April Adam Busiakiewicz, Art Historian, ex curator at Warwick Castle, experienced lecturer, will recall Robert Dudley, Queen Elizabeth’s favourite courtier, statesman and owner of Kenilworth Castle, who spent much of his life seeking the hand of his monarch in marriage; then on May 28,th something very different – five Australian painters - presented by Paul Chapman, a National Gallery trained guide, an Art Historian. Australia is very topical these days. It has suffered huge forest fires in the past – can it recover from the latest holocaust? Will its paintings show scenes that will never recover?

Anyone interested in the Arts is welcome to join our society, with membership over the next half year offered at a reduced rate. SPEEDY CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA Here’s a quick and tasty way to prepare this ever popular dish: For 2/3 you will need: 2 Chicken Supremes from your local butcher 1 tin condensed tomato soup 1 jar Tikka Masala concentrated paste Rice to taste The vital ingredient - a glass or two of wine.

Firstly chop up the chicken breasts into the size chunks that you like.

Then take a crafty slurp of wine.

Take a frying pan into which place a small knob of butter and place over lowish heat.

Brown the chicken and then add the condensed tomato soup and a little water. Finish off with a teaspoon or two (according to taste) of the Tikka Masalsa paste and stir thoroughly.

Whilst you are boiling your rice, allow to cook gently for about 15 minutes or until chicken is thoroughly cooked and serve.

And there you go - it couldn’t be easier and you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your wine.

Having a discussion on what would life be like in the future, and that the 22nd Century would need to be thought about, a youngster said how about year 4000, so in reply perhaps we wouldn't need to go out to work, do housework, as we use robots, and might have pills instead of food, think of all the processes in getting food on the table. GOLD AWARD WINNERS

“IS THERE A POINT?” With Henrietta Wainsworth Spring heralds itself in so many ways and perhaps one of the least thought of, is the Point-to-Point Steeple Chase meeting. More often than not the weather is bitterly cold out on the bleak race course but it’s such a social event where likeminded people meet up in the great outdoors for an afternoon’s fun and a little flutter on the horses. But where did all this start and why are these races named as such? Is there a criterion? Are there rules and regulations? Who can take part? The research relied on for this article threw up some very interesting facts.

Point-to-Point is a form of horse racing over fences for hunting horses and amateur riders associated with an affiliated Hunt. The days of the farmer running his hunter at the local point-to-point have long gone but permission must always be sort from the landowner before a fixture can be granted.

There are strict rules and regulations for, horses, owners and riders to keep Point-to-Point Steeple Chase meetings respectable and under the umbrella of ‘due care’ for all concerned – both man and beast. So, that’s the bare facts in a nut shell, but what of the history?

Chasing from ‘steeple-to steeple’ (or point-to point) began in 1752 when a Mr Blake challenged his neighbour Mr O’Callaghan to race across country from Buttevant church to Doneraile church, County Cork. This was a distance of some four and half miles. They had to jump ditches, hedges and stone walls as they naturally presented themselves on route.

By keeping the steeple of the church in their sight both the gentleman could see their finishing point. So that’s where the name Steeple Chase came from. Logical when you think of it.

The first traceable use of the phrase, point-to-point relating to horse racing, was in Bell’s Life on 10th of January 1874.

The article told of the event that took place on 2nd January with a race from Sutton-on the Forest to Brandsby which was held by the 9th Lancers, stationed at York. In 1875 the Sporting Gazette gave details of a point-to-point race organized by the Monmouthshire Hunt.

In Great Britain local hunts combined in 1913 to form the Master of Hounds Point-to-Point Association and issued a set of standards. By the mid 1930s control passed to the National Hunt Committee and then went to the Jockey Club in the late 1960s.

Apparently, the New Forest Boxing Day point-to-point is one of the few races that is still run under the original conditions. The race is run over the open New Forest with the finishing point given only two weeks before the event and the starting point kept secret until the day of the race itself. The riders can choose their own course in between the two points!

Fair game.

In those hazy days of spring, many moons ago, Henrietta always enjoyed the Kimble point-to-point in the South and Central region but its only since doing the research did she know something of the history.

Quiet Moments The little dog enjoying her walk around the Pussy Pond, sniffing the reeds and other water plants, myself enjoying thoughtful moments, sitting on the thoughtfully placed seat, just taking in the sounds of birds in the bushes. Looking in the tall Pussy Willow trees for the heron sitting on it's favourite branch. No one else walked by on the nearby path, so it was lovely, just sitting quiet and still. Looking at the water for the fish, or frogs, or once what was thought an eel, (don't know what it was) suddenly the water began to ripple, now coming towards the seat, maybe a fish. Looked like a rat, however as it climbed up the bank, sat at my feet, just inches away. It was Ratty (Toad of Toad Hall). There it sat such a cute creature, a water vole, wiping its wet whiskers with it's wet front paws.

No way could it be mistaken for a rat, the fur and tail totally different.

Little dog knew nothing of this endangered creature as it scurried off in the undergrowth of the irises, back into the water. It didn't seem aware of a human sitting there, or the presence of a dog. Once in a Lifetime Treat.

Here are some more observations from the wacky world of Montgolfier: A friend informs me that he wasn’t very old when he was born.

You know when you open a packet of biscuits the first one is often broken. Well, you will be pleased to know that I’ve written to the biscuit manufacturers and they have promised to leave it out in the future.

Had a phone call from a friend up north saying they had a foot of snow nearly three feet deep.

I was going to re-felt my shed roof today, but when I felt it yesterday it was OK. A chum decided that he was going to treat himself to a super new motorbike. Well, he searched Harley Street from top to bottom with no luck.

Did you know it is illegal to drive a car whilst riding a horse.

I went to the bar and ordered 4 beers, 2 shandys, 1 sherry, 2 G&Ts, plus 2 orangeades. I was asked if I would like a tray. I said ‘No thank you, I have enough to carry.’

I didn’t realise my neighbour was so elderly. He remembers when the owners of garages used to come out and put the petrol in your car for you.

Mavis has, we understand, been asked to repeat some of her observations of ‘Typo’s’ that have somehow found their way into the Church newsletters. So it gives us great pleasure to remind you of these wonderful gems!

The Church will host an evening of fine dining, superb entertainment, and gracious hostility.

Pot Luck supper Sunday at 5.00 pm. Prayer and medication to follow.

The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

This evening at 7.00 pm there will be a Hymn Sing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and be prepared to sin.

The Pastor would be grateful if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the Pancake Breakfast next Sunday morning.

Low Self Esteem Group will meet Thursday at 7.00 pm. Please use the back door.

Year 8 will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement on Friday at 7.00 pm. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

Weight Watchers will meet at 8.00 pm at the Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance.
