A Dream That Came True...

An interaction with the Grammy award winner Manoj George Having received the grammy award, how do you describe your journey to the award?

I never ever thought that a Grammy award was waiting on my way. It was like my dream come true. I started playing violin since my childhood.

When I was in my 11th grade, I joined ‘Kalasadan’ (an orchestra) and was fortunate to share stage with many playback singers. After my degree, Fr. Thomas Chakkalamattom took me to Pondicherry to learn western classical music. I also learned piano there.

Most of my memories lay in Bangalore. Raghu Dixit and me started the band ‘Antaragni’. We used to spend hours in the evenings playing violin and guitar. Those days were really helpful in my career because I experimented different styles and had an opportunity to play with different kinds of people. I even travelled a lot during those days.

Later I moved to composing of jingles, advertisements, albums, radio etc. I was surprised and extremely happy to know that ‘Winds of Samsara’ had won a Grammy award.

When did you realise music was

your future?

My parents wanted me to be a doctor. Both my brothers are professionals. So, after my schooling, I was sent to a coaching centre in Thrissur.

But my interest was in music and violin. I told my father about it and he agreed.

Having choosen the road less travelled by, you must have faced many hurdles on your way, can you share some experiences?

Be it any career, one will have to face difficulties. But it’s true; a profession like mine will have a little more. I had my teachers in different states. Pondicherry, Bangalore and also in Chennai, as I got training under master Aravind, who graduated from Juilliard School of music. I had to travel to all these places every week to attend their classes. And now to excel in this field is one of the greatest difficulties. There are no hierarchies for this career. I have to market myself. When I compose music I have to make it as perfect as possible to impress the audience.

You have composed songs in Malayalam, Kannada movies and also in

many albums. Can you share your experience of composing music?

When composing for movies, my duty is to satisfy the director. I should give them the best of what I can according to their instructions.

But in albums, I decide how a song should be and I know what I want clearly. One of my works ‘Urvi’ that achieved a nomination for the Los Angeles Film Awards in 2017 is my favorite. It was a very talented team that I worked with. The director was clear about what he wanted from me and it made my job easier. It was the chemistry of the whole team that gave the best result.

An expertised person in both performance and music composing, how would you like to be known?

A performer or a composer. And why?

Both are equally important for me and I like doing both composing and performing. In composing the results or feedbacks come later. One should wait for the film or album to release. But in performance, the feedbacks are faster. Within minutes of the performance the reaction of the

audience starts coming in. So in that sense I like performing more than composing.

You have performed in various platforms across the world. Which is the performance that you would never forget?

Every stage gives me a memory to take back home. But to sight one, I would say the performance that I did in Trivandrum during the inauguration of Tagore hall. It was not a film based performance. It was something different. I played a symphony with a music group which had almost thirty five members from different parts of the world.

That was an unforgettable memory. The entire hall was crowded till the end of the performance and that made me so happy.

What are your upcoming projects and plans?

I have already started working with albums and hopefully will be released soon and have also committed some films too. I also have stage shows coming up, in the country

The pioneers in hallmarking Satish Pratap, the dynamic person behind the hallmarking of gold and silver talks about how hallmarking can ultimately benefit the consumers. He also talks about the future prospects of hallmarking in India. Excerpts of the exclusive interview given to The Friday Mania.

Brief us about your hallmarking business?

Government of India has identified BIS or Bureau of Indian Standards as a sole agency in India to operate this scheme. BIS hallmarking Scheme is voluntary in nature and is operating under BIS Act, Rules and Regulations. It operates on the basis of trust and thus it is desirable that aspect of quality control are in

built in the system responsible for managing quality. This scheme was introduced in the year 2000 by the government to protect the consumers from purchasing lesser cartage jewellery from the market and also to make sure that they get the proper value for their money.

The BIS Hallmarking Scheme has been aligned with International criteria on hallmarking (Vienna Con-

vention 1972). As per this scheme, license is granted to the jewellers

by BIS under Hallmarking Scheme.

The BIS certified jewellers can get their jewellery hallmarked from any of the BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. We SPS ASSAY AND HALLMARKING is a BIS recognised Assay and hallmarking centre.

We have branches across Kerala at Trichur,Calicut, Trivandrum, Kodungaloor and Ernakulam.

Since how long you are into this?

We have been in this business since 2007 Is hallmarking beneficial for the consumers and whether it’s man-

datory to have hallmarking.?

Yes definitely! Hallmarking of gold jewellery was introduced by the government of India to protect the interests of the consumers. Earlier gold ornaments were purchased from the jewellers purely on the basis of trust which was sadly misused by many jewellers by selling under carat-age gold and cheating a lot of consumers in the process.

How do you do this. Explain the techniques used in this?

The jeweller has to bring the ornaments to the hallmarking center for ascertaining the purity and homogeneity of the ornaments. This is only

October 2017 2 possible if the jewellers have a valid BIS license to assay and mark the jewellery and to sell the hallmarked jewellery in their showroom. The manufactured ornaments are weighed and tested preliminary through an X-Ray Florescent Spectrometer to ascertain that all the ornaments have a purity above 916.0. Anything that fails below that reading is rejected and given back to the jeweler and the rest is passed ahead for sampling. The sampler takes a random sample cuts it from a lot and is further send for chemical testing of the sample which is known as assaying. The entire process takes about 3 hours. Once the assaying results are determined and

is satisfied that it is above 916.0 by the quality manager the ornaments are finally send for laser marking.

The BIS hallmark, a mark of conformity widely accepted by the consumer bestow the additional confidence to the consumer on the purity of gold jewellery.

What made you to venture into this business?

We have been in the assaying and purification of jewellery from 1955 and were pioneers in this technique. We had to take the opportunity when the time was right and the government was promoting their scheme from 2001 and we saw a big future in the standardization of gold

and silver that was unheard of in the initial years.

Your background and experience in this business.?

We have been in the testing and purification business for more than six decades and it was only natural transition for us. We hail from Sangli district of Maharashtra and have learned this art of assaying and refining for many decades. it was our family business.

Your list of clients?

We hallmark for almost all the jewellers in the city and in Kerala but our major clients are Bhima jewellers, Kalyan,Chungath, Athira, Josco, Allapat and many more.We have a list

of about 120 jewellers in the district.

Future plans?

We plan to expand more once the scheme is made mandatory now we already have 5 BIS recognised Assay and hallmarking centres . We are also looking forward to expand to Northern part of Kerala in the future.

Your family?

My family consists of my wife Bageshri who is a Homeopathic doctor and two children Karan pursuing his studies in Symbiosis Pune in Commerce and Tanuj is in 10th standard in Choice school. We are a joint family and my brother Shekhar Pratap is a partner in the above ventures.

Tryst with refreshing moments Goodwyn Tea founder and CEO Rohan Sirohia is a businessman with long vision about his entrepreneurship. A graduate from St. Xaviers College, Kolkata, he has completed his MBA in Family Business Management. He opens up about his e-commerce venture Goodwyn Tea in a tete-a-tete with KR Rejeesh.

Excerpts: How was your entry into business?

When did you decide that “This is the career I wanted”?

After graduation, I used to visit our tea estates in Assam. I knew the kind of quality we produced was far superior than the quality available in the market. That is when I decided to start my own brand where we could deliver single estate Goodwyn Teas direct from tea gardens. I was suggested to position the brand in the mass category but I decided to be a premium brand with high quality teas.

What was the inspiration behind starting online business of Goodwyn Tea?

Online Selling has been a blessing through which we have been able to ship over 70 million cups. Being third generation entrepreneurs, we knew the power of digital assets. We are one of the first few brands to start its own e-commerce for tea. We had seen the growth in China and we felt it would pick up in India too.

How do you compare North and South in terms of sales of your products? What types of tea they choose via online?

In terms of sale, we do equally well in both the regions. Tea bags sell faster online. Customers are looking for herbal, healthy, flavoured and exotic varieties of tea online. Our health tea box, which consists of best

of green and herbal tea designed for different time and mood of the day, is doing really well in the South.

How do you see the competition in the field? What does make your product distinct from others?

There has been stiff competition in this category. But we position ourselves as the New Age brand. We have made customised products, improved the quality and taken a step ahead to bring our customers closer to the tea makers. Our teas don’t have to go through the process of auctioning, warehousing and blending. It’s direct from producers to consumers. We also get the first right to procure the best of tea from different tea gardens.

About your future plans…

We would continue to be a brand focusing on hybrid model, where we will be focusing both on online and offline. We are doing really well in the premium category. Goodwyn still focuses on zero marketing budget

model.

Will depending on online giants like Amazon improve sales? Won’t it affect the direct purchases from your site?

Yes, definitely. We absolutely do not see Amazon and other portals as a threat. In fact, they have made us reach to millions of customers for free. We have some of our most loyal customers from these sites and we plan to continue to focus on third party websites.

What is Goodwyn’s market share currently?

We have been doing really well in the premium category and we will continue to focus on it. We have served over 70 million cups with 100+ corporate clients, including top hotel brands like Hyatt, Four seasons, Sofitel, Novotel and many more. The tea bag market is rising at a very good pace. So it’s difficult to share accurate data.

Who is your role model in business field?

Tea has been there for a while now. We are yet to see some great things happening around tea. My grandfather is my biggest role model in the business world. He was a perfect blend of success, hard work, luck and humility.

The national colour and its strength dissolve the way the bodies of the suffering people in India, the colours forming an ‘O’ and the Ashoka Chakra taking the shape of 2. The cry for Oxygen and the possible asphyxiation due to the lack of it is connected to Freedom and the lack of it by the artist. Also, using this minimal expression, the artist says that the country has been reduced to a ‘0’ by taking away the oxygen/freedom of people.

Narayanan Mohanan is a diploma holder in Software. He keeps a passion for fashion and also is fond of artivism, humanism, Conceptualism, Minimalism & Sarcasm. He has learnt art through self-guided learning with a dose of trial-and-error. He prefers

to choose what to learn and when, and at what pace. He never followed a curriculum based study.

Narayanan‘s art has been planned and executed with the intention of being staged for the physical public domain. His work focuses on visual explorations of culturally significant data and he constantly seeks new ways to represent information to create connection, insight, narration and beauty. According to him childhood is considered to be the most blessed stage in a human life.

Even though childhood is usually associated with exuberance and days of enjoyment, unfortunately for billions of children around the globe, due to the menace of childhood labor, the blissful world of childhood is sadly

missing. Here Narayanan opines that Child is meant to learn and not to earn. and we cannot consider ourselves to be progressive and liberated unless and until we are able to break the shackles and free our society from the menace of child labor and thereby encouraging an environment in which every single child is able to enjoy the bliss of childhood. And of course we don’t deserve to celebrate children’s day if we can’t stop child labor.

Revisiting Gender Equality W

omen are pampered lot by the Laws, if the recent out burst by a group of women against a taxi driver in Kochi is any indication.

Supreme Court has taken note of the misuse of the legal provisions by women, especially in invoking penal provisions. In Sushil Kumar Sharma Vs Union of India and others, “Unleashing of legal terrorism” is what the Supreme Court described the cases under Section 498A (cruelty by husband or his relative) of the Indian Penal Code which was indiscriminately used by unscrupulous persons to wreak vengeance on petty ego issues. In a recent decision, on the same issue, in Rajesh Sharma & Others Vs. State of U.P and another, the Supreme Court deprecated the practice of automatic registering of case against in-laws and husband of a woman and directed the Police and the Magistrate to refer every such complaint to the committees set up by the District Legal Services Authorities to scrutinise for further action.

While it is true that in Lalita Kumari Vs. State of U.P the Supreme Court has made it mandatory to register FIR if the complaint makes out a cognizable offence, but the judgement does not altogether bar

a preliminary enquiry in all cases before registering an FIR. In the taxi incident, there should have been a preliminary enquiry on the complaint by women, especially when it was filed after a case was registered against them for beating up the driver. The police has obviously registered the FIR against the driver only because the complaint was by women. Can’t help thinking; Are women more equal?

The illiteracy of women and the oppressive tradition made the women unaware of their rights. Women in India were fortunate unlike their counter parts in the west, where they had to fight for a century for their basic rights. The balancing act was initiated by the Consitution of India when it gave equal rights to women with men from the very beginning, by virtue of Article 14. It didn’t stop there. Article 15(3) of the Constitution went a step further. It permits the State to make special provision for women and children.

It is with the object of women empowerment that laws are enacted for their protection. The Supreme Court has been zealously protecting the women in the arenas where they were neglected, be it Vishaka’s case

regarding sexual harassment in work places, Hindu Female’s right to maintanenance, Mary Roy’s case upholding Christian women’s right to equal share in father’s property, Shah Banu Begum’s case right to maintenance, no bar to inter caste marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, live in relationships tagged to domestic violence Act, prevention of female foeticide, guidelines for conducting trial of child sexual abuse/rape, to name a few. The judgment rendered by the Supreme Court terming the pronouncement of triple talaq held was the need of the hour in that community.

Supreme Court, in Sandhya Manoj Vankhede Vs Manoj Bhimrao Wankhede, held that the legislature never intended to exclude female relatives of the husband or male partner from the ambit of a complaint that can be made under the provisions of protection of women from domestic violence act, 2005. Keeping in tune with the avowed object of the Act, in Hiral P. Harsora v. Kusum Narottamdas Harsora, Supreme Court has held that complaint under the Act is not only maintainable against an adult male person, but also against a female relative.

Things have changed. Women empowered. Today, the voice of women is everywhere; in the Courts, in Parliament, in the bureaucracy, in the play ground and in the battle field.

State is duty bound to ensure that whatever be the rights of women, it does not foray into the Fundamental Rights of other citizens, including the right to live and the right to carry his avocation. It is the political will that should ensure that the Laws would not be misused.

The expression “equality before law” is borrowed from English law. In State of U.P. v. Deoman Upadhyaya, the Supreme Court held it as the negative aspect of equality. The “equal protection of the laws” in Article 14 has been borrowed from the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and has been described in the said judgment as the positive aspect of equality namely the protection of equal laws: “This subject has been so frequently and recently before this court as not to require an extensive consideration. The doctrine of equality may be briefly stated as follows: All persons are equal before the law is fundamental of every civilised constitution. Equality before law is a negative concept; equal protection

of laws is a positive one. The former declares that every one is equal before law, that no one can claim Advt. B. Premnath High Court of Kerala special privileges and that all classes are equally subjected to the ordinary law of the land; the latter postulates an equal protection of all alike in the same situation and under like circumstances. No discrimination can be made either in the privileges conferred or in the liabilities imposed.

But these propositions conceived in the interests of the public, if logically stretched too far, may not achieve the high purpose behind them. In a society of unequal basic structure, it is well nigh impossible to make laws suitable in their application to all the persons alike. So, a reasonable classification is not only permitted but is necessary if society should progress. But such a classification cannot be arbitrary but must be based upon differences pertinent to the subject in respect of and the purpose for which it is made.”

Common Mistakes in English

W

hen people call for candidates for various jobs, one of the key requisite skills they mention is good communication and there what they normally look for is not your elocutionary prowess or any mastery in your mother tongue be it Malayalam or Hindi but a good command of English as a language.

For it is veritably the language of the globe and the business link for the entire world.

A chaste, flawless, and error-free language (for that matter not only English but any language) will position you as a deft, capable, and caring person. There are very many kinds of mistakes that creep into our language both spoken and written.

I shall take up a few for discussion which can easily betray one’s lack of depth or understanding of English as a language. The topmost as I see it which even the native speakers commit is this one: ‘He is taller than me’. Though it seems perfectly

correct and logical, the right usage will be ‘He is taller than I am’, which sometimes is succinctly put as ‘He is taller than I’ – because ‘taller’ is a conjunction and not a preposition.

Next is the confusion of who or whom. Though ‘who’ and ‘whom’ are relative pronouns, ‘who ‘ is used as the subject of a sentence or clause, to denote who is doing something (like he or she). On the other hand, ‘whom’ is used as a direct or indirect object of a verb or preposition.

Example: Who is the author of the Hamlet? // For whom the bell tolls?

Quite often we get confused between singular/plural usage with reference to collective nouns or groups and mix up the verb. For example, in the sentence ‘A team of doctors are working on the patient’, the use of ‘are’ is wrong ‘Team’ is one single body though it consists of several people, and as it is single, the singular usage of ‘is’ rather than

‘are’ is correct.

Apart from such grammatical mistakes, many a time we slip into mixed up usage of words and phrases. For instance, someone was talking about the temple priest and his ‘regalia’ with reference to his way of dressing and utensils that he would use at the ritual. What the speaker actually meant was ‘paraphernalia’ which means miscellaneous articles, especially the equipment needed for a particular activity.

Regalia would mean the emblems or insignia of royalty, especially the crown, sceptre, and other ornaments used at a coronation. The misuse is basically on account of the words’ similarity of look and sound which we ought to see through.

Again we must notice the difference between ‘All of them know the fact’ as against ‘None of them knows the fact’. When we say none, it is actually a contraction of ‘no one’ and as such the singular verb is proper here.

To acquire a good mastery over English, some of my recommendations are the following few : a) Read English works by English authors (as different from works by American authors) because what England speaks is English. Keep that as your basis and adapt yourself to the so called American, Indian, or International Englishes as required.

Read authors like Thomas Hardy not only for the sake of purity of grammar but beauty of the language itself b) Solve crosswords from Times, Independent, and Guardian which are easily accessible on the net, mostly freely. This will help you not only add to your armour but understand the nuances between one word and another (for example,

Maladu 6 to 8 - almonds 3 to 4 - Cardamom

Poha Mixture Ingredients 1 cup Poha (Beaten Rice) ½ Cup Sev ½ Cup Papad fried (Cut into small pieces and fried) ½ Cup Groundnut roasted Seasoning: 2 tbsp Oil 1 tsp Mustard ½ tspHaldi(Turmeric)pd 1 tspJeera(Cumin seeds) ½ Cup Curry Leaves 5 Green Chillies Chopped Salt to taste

Method: Dry roast poha(beaten rice) till crisp.

When cool mix in all the other ingredients ( 2 to 4) . Mix well.

To Season: Heat Oil. Add mustard seeds, let it splutter, then add Jeera, Green Chillies and Curry Leaves. Let it roast well. Add turmeric pd and salt and mix well.

Add this to poha mix and mix well.

A very healthy and tasty Poha Namkeen is ready. It can be stored in containers for more than a week.

Ingredients: 1 cup - green gram dal flour 3/4 cup - powdered sugar 1/4 cup - ghee

Method: Dry roast the green gram flour. Mix the dal flour, powdered sugar and cardamom powder well. Fry the almonds in 1 tbsp of ghee. Remove them from ghee and add it to the earlier mix. In the same pan, heat the remaining ghee. Add ghee in small quantities

Ingredients: 1/4 cup - Basmati / Raw rice 1 litre - Milk 3/4 cup - Sugar 6 to 8 - Almonds 5 to 6 - Cardamom Saffron Method: Soak the Basmati or Raw rice for 30 minutes in water and then grind it to a coarse powder. Heat the milk in

a thick bottomed pan and once hot take a tablespoon or two and dissolve the saffron strands in this. When the milk is boiled,add the rice, sugar and saffron to this. Keep stirring in low flame so that no lumps are formed.

The consistency of the phirni should be thick, so keep stirring until then.I have added the almonds after blanching so that it’s soft and jells with the phirni. Add the cardamom powder

the banana when they are hot which will melt the sugar. Garnish with cashews and raisins fried.

Add ghee and cardamom powder.

Mix well and serve. Also garnish with grated coconut (optional). Tasty Dilkush Banana is ready to serve.

and blanched almonds when the phirni starts to thicken.

You may put off the stove when the phirni is thickened and serve it chilled.

Rice Kheer

Dilkush Banana Ingredients 3 Ripe Banana diced ( NendraPazham) ½ cup Sugar 1 tbsp Ghee ½ Cup Cashew and Raisins 1 cup Oil for frying 1 tsp Cardamom powder Method : Heat Oil in a pan. Fry the banana pieces till golden brown. Fry the cashews and raisins also.

Now layer sugar in a dish and put the fried bananas. Then again layer sugar. Sugar should be layered over

to the ladu mixture to form ladus.

Ensure to add the right quantity of ghee, ladus Veena Parameswaran may tend to Owner, Ethnic Collage break if less quantity is added.

Kheer and payasam are the terms used interchangeably, and both have been derived from sanskrit terms ksheer and payasa both meaning “milk” Many people prefer basmati rice since it makes the dish very flavorful.

The rich, creamy and delicious taste

comes from simmering the kheer on a low heat for long time.

Ingredients: Basmati Rice 1/4 Cups Milk 3 Cups Sugar 1/4 Cups Cardamom Seed powder 1/4 Teaspoons Saffron Thread 2 Nos Cashew Crushed 100 Grams Almonds/Badam to garnish 10 Nos Method : Take milk on a heavy bottom pan, bring it to boil under medium heat.

Once it starts boiling add rice. Stir well and simmer the flame. Let it cook for 15-20 minutes or till the rice gets tender and cooked.(it should be able to mash properly when pressed with

fingers) Add grind cashews to the mixture and stir well.

Now add sugar and cardamom powder, Parvathy. B. Nair Also saffron Co founder of Tastejet strands Mix well and cook in simmer for 5 more minutes. It should have a bit thicker consistency, when you pour with a spoon, rice and milk should fall together. Turn off the flame. Garnish with cashew or almonds Kheer can be served hot or as chilled. Chilled kheer will be more thicker in consistency .

Gulab Jamun Carrot Coconut Halwa/burfi Ingredients: Grated carrot 5 Cups milk 1 Cups Grated coconut 0.5 Cups sugar 1 Cups Crushed cardamom 4 Nos Ghee 2 Tablespoons Cashews / pista : 2 tbsp Instructions : Rinse, peel and grate the carrots.

In a kadai or Thick bottomed pan, combine carrots and milk together and bring it to boil under medium flame, then simmer the flame. Keep stirring in between.

When milk has 75% reduced, add grated coconut and stir well.

Simultaneously make sugar syrup in 1 cup water in another pan with 1

thread consistency.

Add Sugar syrup to the carrot coconut mixture, stir well since the mixture get thicken quickly Immediately add ghee, stir well . Off the flame.

Add cashews and dry fruits to garnish.

Gulab Jamun is a very famous sweet enjoyed in most festive and celebration meals. Gulab meaning rose and jamun meaning berry. Gulab jamun are berry sized balls dunked in rose flavored sugar syrup, earlier it was made mainly using khoya, here we are making it with milk powder, which is easily available for everyone.

Ingredients: (240 ml cup used) 1 cup milk powder �¼ cup + 2 tbsp all-purpose flour �1 tsp ghee �1 tsp ghee/ oil for greasing �1 tbsp milk �1 tbsp curd/ yogurt �1 pinch of Baking soda �Ghee / oil for deep frying �1 tsp chopped pistachios For sugar syrup �1 ¼ to 1 ½ cups Sugar �1 ½ cup water �4 green cardamom pods or ¼ tsp cardamom powder �Few drops of rose water

Mix together water, sugar and crushed cardamoms.

Boil the syrup until it turns slightly sticky. Switch off before it goes to a 1 string consistency. If it reaches a 1 string consistency, then add 2 tbsp of water and mix. Add rose water and mix. Set aside. rose water is not mandatory.

Mix together flour, milk powder and soda. Either sieve it or mix uniformly.

Add ghee to this flour and mix well.

Mix together yogurt and milk. Add 1.5 tbsp of this to the flour mixture.

Begin to bring the flour together to make a dough. Knead the dough well.

If the dough turns sticky. Grease your fingers and make a ball. The dough must not soggy. It must hold the shape well.

Make 12 to 14 equal sized balls and heat up the pan with ghee or oil. Also check if the syrup is hot. If it is not hot, heat it up a bit. It must be hot

and not very hot.

When the ghee is just medium hot, add the balls. Make sure the oil is not very hot else the gulab jamuns will become brown without cooking well. To check the right temp, you can drop a small piece of dough in the oil, it must rise slowly without changing its color. If it rises rapidly then you will need to cool the oil a bit before frying.

Fry the balls until golden stirring uniformly.

Add them to the hot syrup. Allow them to rest for 3 hours and serve.

Garnish with pistachios.

Prawns Drumsticks Theeyal

Ideal for dining out

Dubai Restaurant located at Parutheli Palam near Edappally Toll is an ideal eatery if you are a connoisseur of Arabian, South Indian or Chinese food. I went there along with my daughter to taste something which is unique there. The ambience is quite good with a special touch of Dubai city paintings decorated inside.

Even though it’s not spacious it’s not congested. We noticed a rare type of Biriyani (Bamboo chicken Biriyani) in the menu and we enquired the serving person for the details. The explanation was so convincing and we decided to give it a try. My daughter

was so thrilled to see the bamboo container filled with hot steaming biriyani and we started enjoying it. I could see the inquisitive eyes of my daughter and I knew she was exploring the uniqueness of bamboo biriyani . To be honest our taste buds were pampered with the taste and flavor of the biriyani.

The chicken was perfectly cooked and the rice was intact. And the spices were added in a decent proportion which was a blessing for us. This was one of the best tastes we ever had in Kochi. And we rate this Bamboo Biriyani as 5 out of 5. And

We recommend to try this as this is really worth trying. Totally a different experience of dining out.

Ingredients 1. Prawns - 500 gms 2. Drumsticks - 2 3. Shallots - 12 4. Green chilli - 2 5. Kudompuli - 2 small pieces Or one tomato (medium diced) 6. Turmeric powder - half tsp 7. Mustard seeds - half tsp 8. Fenugreek seeds - half tsp 9. Curry leaves 10. Salt 11. Coconut oil - 4 tbsp For coconut paste 1. one cup grated coconut 2. Shallots 2 ( cut it small pieces) 3. Coriander powder - one and half tsp 4. Chilli powder - one tsp Method of preparation Wash and clean the prawns and keep aside. Soak kudompuli in half cup of warm water. In a pan, take some oil,add grated coconut to it and 2 sliced shallots stir it continuously till it becomes slightly brown in color.

Add coriander and chilli powder and stir for a minute, switch off fire and keep aside to cool. Once cooled grind Sinu Shiju David it well into a smooth paste by adding a little water if required. (take care that it should not be watery while grinding) Take another pan or clay pot , heat 2 tbsp oil add the remaining shallots and green chilli and saute it, add the drumsticks, turmeric powder, and kudompuli along with water ( or you can add sliced tomato) bring it to a boil .When the drumsticks are half cooked add the prawns,add salt to taste to cook prawns. Cover it with a lid and place it over medium heat.

When it is cooked add the coconut paste and mix it well. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.

Heat oil in a pan splutter mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Saute curry leaves for a minute and remove from flame. Pour over the prawns theeyal and the curry is ready to serve with cooked rice.

Care must be taken to properly socialize these birds and to provide them with adequate mental stimulation, so that screaming doesn’t become a habit out of boredom. These are raucous birds that require plenty of space, a lot of time and attention and a healthy diet.

Golden Retrievers are a very popular kind of dog. When the breed was first created, they were used for hunting. Now, they are sometimes used for hunting, but a lot of people like to have them as pets because they are very friendly. People also like them because their face looks like they are smiling all the time.

Because they are so friendly, Golden Retrievers cannot be used as guard dogs, but they are good as drug dogs at airports and very good as service dogs for the blind (People who cannot see). They also like people, so when they are left alone for too long, they

them to be easily trained. Golden Retrievers are very active dogs and need a lot of exercise. Goldens make wonderful pets, but they need to be exercised regularly to prevent weight gain and promote overall health. They require a great deal of grooming, as they shed hair daily. Goldens also enjoy the cool water.

Life Span of Sugar Gliders

S

ugar gliders live about 10-15 years in captivity so they are long term pets! The sugar glider’s body is about five to six inches long and the tail adds another six inches (which acts as a rudder while they glide).

They weigh only four to five and a half ounces (100-160 grams).Sugar gliders are very social and need companionship. This makes them bond

well to their owners (especially if you use a bonding pouch) but even if you can provide a lot of attention and spend the necessary time with your glider, keeping a single glider is not ideal. Sugar gliders have a language all their own and live in colonies of up to 30 gliders in the wild. Housing a glider by themselves can lead to behavioral, mental, and emotional, and even physical problems for your pet. Strongly consider keeping more than one glider, if not several of them, in a flight cage. Humans cannot offer the same type of companionship and socialization that other sugar gliders

can provide to each other. The vocalizations, grooming, and bonding that they provide for each other is irreplaceable by a human.

These are blended diets using baby food, honey, fruits, vitamins, and other ingredients and then supplemented with fresh items such as fruit, vegetables, and insects.

Formulated, pre-packaged diets for sugar gliders do exist at pet stores and online but they are not recommended as a staple diet since they are not nutritionally complete. The Needs of sugar glider have changed as more is learned about them.

Crocheting with love Rani Thomas, a person who spreads lot of compassion and love for the less privileged through her charity works is on a mission to make the world a better place. She is a part of 67 blankets group in SA and holds a Guinness book record. In an exclusive interview to The Friday Mania She spoke about her passion for crocheting and the love she spreads by being a part of the blanket project . Excerpts of the chat You have become a part of an international movement where India and South Africa exchanged love and care and your gesture have put a milestone in the relationships between the two countries. Explain how you started your journey to this road?

My journey on this road started off with me participating and winning the Guinness world record for the world’s largest blanket with a few other crocheters from India. During this project I came to know about the 67blankets group in SA whose record India broke at that time. I was curious to know more about this group and the rest is a history.I was amazed at the way 67 blankets worked. I was lucky to interact with Carolyn Steyn Founder of 67blankets.

When I watched the videos of the group and their vision for charity, I knew straight away that this is what I have always been dreaming of.

God has blessed me with the talent and I wanted to utilize it in the best possible manner.

How you came to know about this noble cause?

I had the opportunity to meet Carolyn Steyn during October 2016

when I visited my Son and his family Dr. Antony Thomas a Neurosurgeon.

She showed me how well organized the 67 blankets charity group really is and when she explained to me about her vision for charity and how they planned to celebrate the centenary of their beloved Father of the nation Nelson Mandela I was astonished seeing the love for Madiba.

I got involved with 67 blankets seeing the clarity and transparency in their charity work.

What was the inspiration behind your decision to stitch blankets for Madiba? Is it your love for Nelson Mandela’s humanitarian works?

I had always felt a lot of resemblance between Gandhiji and Madiba.

I adore the way both leaders worked for freedom.At the age of 40 Mandela went to jail and came out after 27years. He was 67 years when South Africa got their freedom. I really respect him for his sacrifice and the courage he showed for his people. Nelson Mandela has brought happiness to the people who suffered with an unconditional love for his countrymen How satisfied are you after sending the blankets and especially when

you know that your blankets are giving comfort and warmth to so many needy in South Africa?

It makes me really happy. We are going to crochet the World’s Largest Portrait Blanket depicting the face of Nelson Mandela as a tribute to his centenary which is on April 24th, 2018. Spread over 4515sqmt which can only be visible with an aerial view.India has pledged 100 blankets. On August 30th our first set of blankets reached Steyn City. The next set is scheduled to be sent on Oct 20th.

I went to a few schools and the response was tremendous. I want to go to many more schools and teach them crochet.

My plan is to teach these children to make blankets, Caps etc. and go to hospitals and orphanages and distribute to the needy.

God has blessed me with a very loving and caring family who supports me in every possible way. My husband Thomas a medical doctor by profession is my backbone and his support and love is the reason why I am able to be a part of this charity project.

I am blessed with two loving sons both married Eldest son Antony Neurosurgeon by profession his wife Mony is a psychologist blessed with a loving son Theo.

Youngest son Anil Thomas is a Marine Engineer settled in Sydney with his wife Anu working in shipping logistics.

My family has always motivated and supported me throughout my projects. They are always there for me to help me (especially with new technology).

In love with Munnar

I

have visited Munnar on many occasions; the hill station, though beautiful, is not a virgin terrain. Over trodden might be the exact word that best fits the green hills of Munnar.

The idea of visiting Munnar one more time seemed bad to me.

It was raining and I had doubts about having a good trip as Munnar was reported to be drenched in rain. I have never had the experience of visiting the beloved hill station during the off-season. The searing political climate set off by the ongoing drama over the issue of land encroachment allegedly done the ‘resort mafia’ added fuel to my confusion.

Against all odds, my mind finally succumbed to the charm of Munnar.

On a fine early morning, I set off to Munnar in a rented car in the company of people I know very well. I started my journey from Aluva and sped through Kothamangalam-Adimaly route to reach Munnar. It took me barely three and half hours to reach Munnar from Aluva.

Munnar welcomed me with lovely drizzles.The chilling breeze and the drizzle made every tourist long for the warmth of sweaters.Yet, this is only mild compared to the freezing cold weather we can nor-

mally experience in Munnar during on-season. I checked into a budget hotel in Mattupetty.

I fixed the nearby Kundla Dam as the first spot for sightseeing. On the way to the dam, I bought an umbrella from a street-side vendor for Rs. 100.

It was a cute-looking umbrella with polka dot design but overpriced given its inferior quality.

Kundla dam is a perfect spot near Mattupetty to hang out with friends or family. But I saw very little water in the dam that day. There is a much greener terrain in the area near the dam which is perfect for photo shoots.

I saw local photographers speaking Tamil and Malayalam (with a Tamil accent) roaming around. “Time for photos!”You pose, they click and in a few minutes, the hard copies of the photos will be delivered.

There is also an opportunity for horse riding and shopping around the area. You can also try pedal boating at Kundla dam. The rain was still there and my umbrella didn’t seem strong enough to carry the wind. The dusk was approaching and I called it a day.

The next day I went to Rajamalai, where the famous Eravikulam National Park is situated. Eravikulam

is Kerala’s first national park and is home to the rare Nilgiri tahr, a species closely related to the ‘sheep’ family. It is popularly known in Kerala as ‘Varayaadu’.

The Eravikulam national park is worth visiting with your family or friends. During the season you may experience heavy rush; the queue at the ticket counter will be too long. But this time, as it was not the season, the rush was minimal and it was not difficult to get the tickets.

A bus came down to pick the visitors from the ticket counter to the top of the hill. At the top, there is a facility for refreshments. The bus stops here and the visitors need to continue their journey up the mountain on foot.

Blue sky and the green surroundings would keep you from feeling the pangs of long walking. I was lucky this time as I was able to spot the rare and beautiful Nilgiri Tahr multiple time throughout the journey upwards.

Tahrs were grazing the green meadows. I saw tourists stop by and take selfies with the poor creature.

The tahrs appeared a bit scared but they didn’t run away. You are not supposed to touch them, as the warning

2017 Maruti S-Cross

he S-Cross is back with a fresh face, a host of tweaks and for the first time, a mild-hybrid system.

The biggest change is to the face in a bid to address the S-Cross’ biggest weakness, its uninspiring looks. In fact, this is more than a facelift, with almost everything forward of the windscreen, apart from the fenders, completely new. The S-Cross gets a muscular new bonnet, with strong character lines that are visible even from the driver’s view point. What really catches your attention and is the large, toothy grille with strong chrome accents. The new headlights look very high-tech and remind of the previous-generation BMW 5-series.

But it’s only the top Alpha model that gets LED projector lights and LED daytime running lamps, while the lower three variants make do with halogens. The front is rounded off by an eye-catching new bumper and the overall design, while not

classically pretty, is quite striking and certainly enhances the road presence of the S-Cross. Changes to side are quite minimal, like most mid-life updates, but the car does get new machine-polished 16-inch wheels that look quite fetching. At the rear, the more observant will notice a new LED tail-lamp design.

The interiors are quite familiar and largely carried over, and, though there are more soft-touch materials, the overall cabin feels quite plasticky and lacks the luxury quotient of cars in this price bracket. The touch screen display is the same, but it now supports both Apple Car Play and Android Auto. We had a go at the latter and found it nice to be able to use the phone functions from the car’s screen; but the system is a bit slow to respond. On the top two variants, the dashboard uses a new, high-gloss piano-black treatment and also gets some satin-polished

chrome trim. If you opt for the top Alpha variant, you’ll get leather upholstery as well.

The front seats are comfortable and supportive and the driving position is quite adjustable thanks to rake and reach adjustment for the steering wheel. The rear remains quite spacious and comfortable, but passengers at the back will miss having AC vents. The 375-litre boot houses an additional 12V power outlet and is large enough to hold luggage for a short vacation. The seats fold flat in a 60:40 split, allowing you to further increase space as needed.

The S-Cross has a good feature set in the top model, including auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control and more. The switchgear is shared with most Maruti products and you don’t get the lovely

full-colour multi-information display from the Baleno. Buyers at this price point will have liked the option of a sunroof too. Happily, the S-Cross now offers dual airbags, ABS and rear Isofix mounts as standard on all variants. The vehicle has been tested at Maruti’s state-of-the-art R&D facility at Rohtak and the company says it is fully compliant with the upcoming safety regulations, including frontal offset crash, side impact and pedestrian safety.

The S-Cross now comes with just one engine as Maruti has dropped the previous 1.6-litre diesel from the line-up, leaving just the 1.3-litre diesel engine.

The 1.6-litre engine, fully imported (from Fiat), added Rs 1.4 lakh to the price of the car, which was just too steep for buyers to digest.

But, with it gone, Maruti hasn’t supplemented the range with another engine.

Honda’s total two-wheeler sales in last fiscal crossed five million units in FY17, marking a growth of 12 per cent.

Of this, total automatic scooter sales edged past three million units, rising by 16 per cent. The two-wheeler manufacturer also posted 42 per cent growth in exports (283,163 units) in FY17 when the industry

was let down by a de-growth of six per cent.

So, the Nexon has to deliver on at least these counts to excel.

The Tata Nexon is neither a sub-compact SUV nor a hatchback on stilts. It’s a crossover in the true sense. The unconventional design is eye-catchy, which should make it hard to miss when parked beside other hatchbacks and compact SUVs. The top-spec XZ+ variant of the Nexon that we drove sported a contrast-colour roof in steel grey with both red and blue exterior colours.

The signature element is an off-white plastic trim that runs just under the greenhouse on the side. It continues at the rear too, but that’s paint and not plastic. Apart from the grey roof and off-white sash, there’s another contrasting element on the outside

the black plastic cladding. It does its job of making the Nexon look rugged and high-heeled quite well.While the Nexon looks SUV-ish from the front, the rear is more hatchback-like. There’s an off-white and glossy black element around the clear-lens tail lamps that adds quirkiness to the design, but you get used to it with time The Nexon’s interior has three prominent layers. The upper portion is finished in dark grey plastic, and its quality is on par with its peers.

Honda Motorcycle L eading two-wheeler maker Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd is looking at two new product offerings by the close of this financial year. The company has lined up a Capital expenditure (Capex) of Rs 700-800 crore, to be invested mostly in creating additional production line at its Karnataka plant.

“We are planning to launch two

new models- a gearless scooter and a motorcycle. Our Capex for this financial year would be used primarily on the new production line at Karnataka that would enhance annual production capacity by 50,000 units.

Some of the Capex would also go into new model line-ups and product upgrades. Our cumulative Capex stands at around Rs 8,000 crore”,
