s I write this year’s message for Minor Hockey week, I am looking back on my 20 years on the board of Minor Hockey. It has really been a privilege to be able to serve on the board and I have taken great pleasure in seeing a lot of kids progress through the divisions! I am thankful to have had this opportunity. Canada is back on top of the hockey world having won Gold at the IIHF World Junior and Spengler Cup tournaments! It was great to see a player from a neighbouring community, Bowen Byram from Cranbrook, playing for Team Canada!! It is one of my favourite Christmas holiday past times to watch those games. What I wish most for our players is that playing hockey brings them joy. Hockey should be fun for and accessible to all players. It shouldn’t just be about developing your skill on the ice, it should also be about creating friendships, building character and making lifelong happy memories. As always, we wouldn’t have hockey without the players, parents, officials, coaches, managers and our Board. Thank you to every one of you for your commitment to and participation in the greatest sport there is. Happy New Year to everyone and Happy Minor Hockey Week! t’s been a busy and successful season so far for Elk Valley Minor Hockey. The season started out with the exciting formation of a new peewee rep team named the Elk Valley Raiders. The Raiders are named after the former KJIHL Junior B team from the Elk Valley/Fernie area. The team is comprised of players from Fernie, Elkford and Sparwood and is a positive step to help players compete at a higher level of hockey. Elk Valley Minor hockey is also very excited about our newly reinstated girls team. The team features players from Elkford, Sparwood and Fernie from Novice to Bantam age. They have played some exhibition and tournament games. This team is very exciting for our association as it focuses on getting girls out playing and enjoying hockey. Our association has featured two key events so far this season. Hugh Twa Weekend in Elkford started the season with most of the teams from initiation to peewee showcasing their skills in either games or scrimmages. Mid-January featured Sparwood Hockey Weekend where all teams hosted games at the Sparwood arena. These events are important to us as it brings the whole association together for one weekend amid each team’s busy schedule. Elk Valley Minor Hockey is completely volunteer run and we would like to thank everyone who has volunteered. This includes coaches, managers, safety trainers, parents, locals and sponsors. Without your help minor hockey would not be successful and we are grateful for your support! Cheers! Crystal Tennant For Elk Valley Minor Hockey
