Michelle’s Message Dear Neighbors and Arts Enthusiasts, As we begin the 13th season here at The Freeman Stage, we are reminded of how important the arts are to our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic, combined with the resulting economic stress and social unrest facing our country today, challenge us on many levels. And yet in the midst of it all, we’ve seen how the arts and the indomitable human spirit lift us up and sustain us.

For our part, we segued to a series of virtual programs through our social media channels — including “The Stage is Yours” where we showcased local/regional acts online — which allowed us to continue fulfilling our mission.

When schools shut down in late March, we continued to provide virtual Arts in Education programs to the community with the “Weekly Dose of the Arts” series and “Whimsical Masterpieces at Home with John Donato.” It’s been heartwarming to see the support and engagement these programs have garnered.

The decision to move forward with a season this year was thoughtful and deliberate, as we remained mindful of the public safety imperatives that currently exist as well as the economic realities of the performing arts industry. But our belief as an organization is that the arts are essential and having the ability to create opportunities that elevate the human spirit is as much of a privilege as it is an obligation. We are so fortunate to have a beautiful outdoor venue where we can safely accommodate a limited number of patrons while adhering to public health guidelines. Even more important, we are grateful for our wonderful staff and volunteer corps who had the drive and resourcefulness to carve out this special season in spite of the obstacles that surrounded us.

We are particularly thankful to our sponsors who are so steadfast in their support and confidence in our organization over the past few months as we navigate these uncertain waters. We realize that this smaller, “right-sized” season may not have been what any of us expected, but we are so grateful that we can literally “let the music play” at a time when it is so needed. Creating opportunities that elevate the human spirit

The Joshua M. Freeman Foundation was established in 2007 to honor Josh Freeman, the former Chair of the Carl M. Freeman Companies, after his untimely death in December of 2006. The Foundation seeks to honor Josh’s passion and commitment to excellence by creating programs he would have been proud of.

These programs include The Freeman Stage, an outdoor performance venue near Fenwick Island, which presents over 60 performances a year, and our Arts Access Initiative, which provides K-12 students and under-served families of Delmarva year-round access to high-quality, diverse arts experiences at no cost. Annually, more than 80,000 residents and visitors are impacted through our mission of creating opportunities that elevate the human spirit.

Arts Access Initiative While the excitement around our performing arts season is exhilarating, the heart of The Freeman Stage is in our Arts Access Initiative, which provides K-12 students, residents and families of the Delmarva region year-round access to high quality, diverse arts experiences at no cost.

There are four programming elements that are all provided free of charge to the local community and area schools: Performing Arts Series: A multidisciplinary series featuring dance, music, theater and cultural performances that represent the ethnic roots of our region.

Young Audience Series: Provides educational, interactive arts experiences for prekindergarten through Grade 5 children, enhancing adolescent skills such as cognitive and language development in an entertaining way.

Community Access Program: Provides complimentary entrance for ticketed performances and year-round transportation grants for our educational and nonprofit partners.

Arts in Education Program: Targeting grade clusters (K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-10) with a three-year rotational schedule to fulfill the program objective of providing a minimum of four diverse arts experiences to students during their academic career.

The Stage is Set for

What began as a small wooden stage in 2008 will emerge as The Freeman Arts Pavilion in the near future and become the premier cultural arts destination in southern Delaware and its coastal region. Building on the success of The Freeman Stage, this newly constructed permanent open-air facility will serve as a major entertainment and educational resource for the entire community.

While the facility will be new, it will remain rooted in the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation’s mission of advancing arts access for all through performance, education and advocacy.

About Joshua M. Freeman Joshua M. Freeman (1964-2006) was the only son of real estate developer and philanthropist Carl Freeman and his wife, Virginia. Josh grew up on Tusculum Farm, the family’s home near Olney, Maryland, and attended Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. After graduating from Landon, Josh joined the Army and served his country as a Green Beret. In 1986, he joined the family business and began his career as a leasing agent with the Carl M. Freeman Companies. He diligently worked his way through the various companies and became President and Chief Executive Officer in 1992.

Josh was a passionate philanthropist who knew the importance of giving back. In addition to the Freeman Companies, Josh served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Carl M. Freeman Foundation, continuing his father’s legacy of giving back to the areas where the Carl M. Freeman Companies does business. He also served on the Boards of Venture Philanthropy Partners, the Washington National Opera, the United Jewish Endowment Fund and Landon School.

Josh was particularly passionate about the arts.

The Freeman Family legacy of supporting the arts spans several generations. Carl Freeman helped found the Kennedy Center in the 1960s and was well known throughout the Washington, D.C., area for his support of the arts, including the Washington National Opera and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Josh was born into a family that stressed the value of arts to a balanced life, and his passion was evident. He served as a board member for the Washington National Opera and was proud to continue his family’s legacy of arts patronage.

Josh loved music - everything from opera to Bruce Springsteen. A lover of all visual arts, Josh himself particularly enjoyed photography and loved to document the people, places, and things he treasured most with his camera. Josh loved being carried away with the experience of the Arts. He loved to lie in the grass, with a cold drink in his hand, surrounded by his family, listening to a symphony perform.

Josh was a man who appreciated, and offered, high quality service to his family, friends, and customers. The “J-dot” image in the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation’s logo was the official signature of Josh. This symbol was essentially his “seal of approval” and only things that met his standards for excellence received this mark. Moving forward, the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation will use this symbol as a way of representing the standards, ideals and activities that Josh was committed to and cared deeply about.

LOWER CASE BLUES THURSDAY, JULY 9 • 8 P.M. $60-$80 per pod

Hailing from their home state of Delaware, Lower Case Blues began their journey in 2003 and has been traveling the region, providing some of the best blends of blues and rock music. The band is BJ Muntz on Bass and Vocals, Jake B on Guitar and Paul Weik on Drums. They are known for their unique style of jamming, always taking the music in new directions while still paying tribute to the tradition of the blues. LCB has recorded several albums of original music and performs steadily throughout the year which has earned them the reputation of being one of the "Hardest Working Bands" in the area.

TECHNICOLOR MOTOR HOME: A STEELY DAN TRIBUTE FRIDAY, JULY 10 • 8 P.M.

SOLD OUT A mix of elegance and function, this 10-piece band plays its homage to the recent touring versions of Steely Dan. Their show includes material from every Steely Dan album as well as some gems from Becker and Fagen solo projects. Led by Crack The Sky’s keyboardist Glenn Workman, the group was named Best Tribute Band by Baltimore magazine after their first show almost 10 years ago. They were immediately booked for their second gig, opening for Steely Dan’s longtime lead guitarist Jon Herrington, and then did that again several months later. The members are all longtime veterans of the Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania music scene and most lead their own bands as well as play in over 30 other groups.

Cascading Carlos is not a clown or magician, he is a juggler, nonetheless he clowns around and has a lot of illusions in his juggling show. You will be amazed by his Juggling skills, while he teaches you how to juggle. His talent to motivate you through juggling will help you build your self-esteem, confidence and focus. Guinness Word Record Title Holder Carlos has achieved a milestone on Nov. 18, 2017, he received his official Guinness World Record certificate for throwing a diabolo 78.5 feet high and catching it (Diabolo is a popular juggling prop also known as a Chinese yo-yo). sponsored by

Known as a popular local musician, Lauren became serious about music in college where she attended Berklee College of Music. She studied under the best vocal coaches and obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in Film Scoring. She also studied bass guitar which was inspired by her most influential musician Amiee Mann from group Til Tuesday. She is influenced by many other greats such at Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Janis Joplin, Robert Plant, Alicia Keys, Anne Wilson, Carole King, Carley Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Fleetwood Mac to name a few. Lauren began singing at 10 years old when she discovered the Broadway show Anne. She also grew up with the sounds of Heart and Pat Benatar which she stills loves performing today. Lauren also has three CDs out, "Eternity," "Love Tangles," and "Keep on Moving." With her soulful style and her heartfelt lyrics you won’t want to miss out on hearing these!

Red Sky Dawn was formed in 2019. John Judge, Dawn Van Jones & Bill Mojica collectively left a prior cover band to form what is now Red Sky Dawn. Fred Helms was an amazing pick-up to help craft the sounds & trajectory of this high-energy band. The culmination of experience, expertise in their craft as well as intense passion for live (never tracked) music, put them in the right place at the right time.

JESSE GARRON'S TRIBUTE TO ELVIS FRIDAY, JULY 17 • 8 P.M. $80-$100 per pod

Jesse Garron possesses the voice, looks and charisma that made Elvis a superstar and draws audiences in from the minute he walks on stage. Backed by live musicians and female vocalists, Jesse performs songs that cross three generations of rock, pop, gospel and oldies music, so the act has universal appeal. This Vegas-style rendition is a consistent fan favorite that has earned a reputation for professionalism as well as countless standing ovations. With a guitar, a loud voice, a wig, a kazoo, boxer shorts, and a lot of silly body movements, Silly Joe keeps everyone involved in the show. Silly Joe sings about family trips with grumpy dads in “Are We There Yet?” crazy pets in “Timmy Had a Tiger” and “Dumb Dog,” brother and sister relationships in “Little Sister Blues” and “Princess in Training,” and kids who act goofy in “Put It on My Head” and “The Underwear Song.” Mixing stories with music, Silly Joe captures family moments in an honest and imaginative way. Benjamin Rauhala is one of the Broadway community's most trusted music directors and collaborators, known best for his arrangements and concerts with Jeremy Jordan, the Tonynominated star of Broadway's "Newsies," and as the co-creator and Fairy Godfairy of the Broadway Princess Party concert series starring Laura Osnes, Susan Egan, and Courtney Reed. FREE Peter and Tinkerbell lead Wendy, Michael and John off to Neverland for adventures with Captain Hook and the Pirates, Tiger Lily and The Lost Boys. James Barrie's classic story of youthful joy features two actors who bring all the familiar characters to life. There is great fun for all ages in this spirited, imaginative production.

TRANZFUSION SATURDAY, JULY 25 • 8 P.M. $60-$80 per pod

Tranzfusion is a classic rock band that performs songs from the '60s and '70s including artists such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, The Moody Blues, Santana, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, and artists from the '80s including U2, The Talking Heads, Billy Idol, Tears For Fears, and The Cars. They have been performing all over Maryland and have traveled up and down the East Coast from Pennsylvania to the Florida Keys since 1983. The members include Bobby Malaby, drums and vocals; Bob Davis, keyboards, bass guitar, harmonica and vocals; Hank Koenig, guitar, harmonica and vocals; and Al Cook, bass guitar and vocals. Tranzfusion also has two sound techs, Paul Brunkhorst and Scott Malaby. Tranzfusion has recorded three CDs of original music.

19TH STREET BAND THURSDAY, JULY 30 • 8 P.M. $80-$100 per pod

Characterized by high energy and strong vocal harmonies, The 19th Street Band bridges the musical traditions of bluegrass and roots from Ireland to the Appalachia with their eclectic gypsyrock spirit literally leaping from the stage and engaging every crowd. The charismatic vibe that Caolaidhe Davis (guitar player and vocalist) blends with fiddle/mandolin player, vocalist (and wife), Meghan, creates a joy-filled chemistry that no crowd can resist. Add to the mix the talented rhythm section, Greg Hardin (bass) & Patty Dougherty (drums), and this band will have every crowd addicted. The band’s second album, "Diamond in the Rough," is due to be released in August and includes three songs that were co-written by Philip Donnelly and John Prine.

Sam Hyman's “Sweet Baby James” show is a masterful tribute to the music of James Taylor. Sam’s uncanny resemblance and astonishing capture of Taylor’s vocal and guitar styles leaves audiences feeling like they’ve just seen and heard the legend himself.

Sam’s unique guitar style, soulful voice, original songs and interpretations of timeless classics have captivated thousands of audiences the world over. Musician, vocalist and composer, Sam’s original music has been featured in television and theatrical productions around the globe. Sam received his degree in music composition from the prestigious D’Angelo School of Music, and has since worked with music industry greats such as Lou Rawls, Eric Burden, Crosby Stills & Nash, 10,000 Maniacs and The Violent Femmes. He collaborated with Praz (Fugees, Wyclef Jean, Lauren Hill) on Dante Thomas’s cover of Sam’s original song "Fly," the title cut of Dante’s freshman Elektra Records release.

Four out of the original six of the members of The Amish Outlaws were born and raised in Lancaster, Pennslyvania, and had a strict Amish upbringing.

No electricity from landlines, no alcohol, no musical instruments, but their spirits were too wild for the Amish lifestyle. In the years since Rumspringa, the members of the Amish Outlaws have become very well acclimated to the pleasures and vices of the modern world — music, most of all.

It was this mutual love of music that brought the Outlaws together.

There is no "typical" Amish Outlaws show, but the average crowd can expect to see men in full Amish garb releasing all of their pent up energy with an infectious joy.
