Welcome to Bath Mozartfest 2025

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 35th annual Bath Mozartfest: a feast of fine music in beautiful Bath.

As always, the music of Mozart lies at its heart and we open with the Schumann Quartet, making their Bath debut, playing Mozart’s deeply moving String Quartet No 15.

There is a wealth of new talent this year as we also have the Consone Quartet, with Kristian Bezuidenhout, and the Carducci String Quartet and Castalian String Quartet for their inaugural Mozartfest performances.

We are delighted to see old friends making return visits, too: Henning Kraggerud (violin), Adrian Brendel (cello) and Imogen Cooper (piano) are all well-known and respected independently, but come together here to play Schubert’s Piano Trios. The Leonore Piano Trio will also make a welcome re-appearance, in a concert including Dvořák’s tempestuous third Piano Trio.

Cédric Tiberghien, also familiar to regular audience members, will be playing Beethoven’s great Diabelli Variations. And Beethoven, as well as Mozart of course, will feature in Jennifer Pike’s concert in the form of his Violin Sonata No 5, Spring

The Nash Ensemble, the group I founded sixty years ago, will also appear, their programme this year including Ralph Vaughan Williams beloved work The Lark Ascending, alongside two Mozart pieces and Mendelssohn’s sublime Octet.

The outstanding German-Romanian baritone Konstantin Krimmel will sing Schubert’s Winterreise, accompanied by Simon CrawfordPhillips, and the latter will appear again with Philip Moore, the acclaimed piano duo including Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in their programme.

Bath Mozartfest has long championed youthful talent setting out on international careers, and we are delighted to include a Saturday morning concert featuring BBC Radio 3 New Generation artists and alumni

Tenebrae bring to Bath a divine programme of English music from the sixteenth century, and I’m delighted that Sir Mark Elder will be making another visit to Bath, now as the Hallé orchestra’s Conductor Emeritus. The Hallé’s performance will see Dame Imogen Cooper making the first of two Mozartfest appearances of the week, here playing Mozart’s final, beautifully poetic, Piano Concerto No 27.

The festival will draw to a close with La Nuova Musica and Mozart’s Mass in C minor, known as the Great for good reason.

Please note, doors to the venue will open at 6.45pm

The end of this Mozartfest will have a special poignancy for me – it will be my last one. It has been a tremendous privilege to be the artistic director of this wonderful festival for more than thirty years, and I am delighted to leave it thriving and in excellent hands. I wish you all a wonderful Mozartfest 2025.

With fondest wishes,

The Schumann Quartet will open Bath Mozartfest with their debut performance in the City, playing Mozart’s music. String Quartet No 15 K 421 was dedicated to Haydn, Mozart’s friend, colleague and mentor. This intense work, full of emotional depth, is a perfect vehicle for the sensitive and empathetic playing of the quartet, which comprises the three Schumann brothers plus violist Veit Hertenstein. Having formed in 2007, and studied with the Alban Berg Quartet, the group has won many plaudits. In tonight’s programme the Mozart will be followed by the fourth of Haydn’s six Sun quartets, then Beethoven’s final completed work, String Quartet No 16, beloved for its remarkable variety of detail and subtlety of harmony.

Winterreise Op 89

When the German-Romanian baritone Konstantin Krimmel and pianist Simon Crawford-Phillips appeared together on stage at Wigmore Hall last year they earned five-star reviews for their exquisitely crafted and moving interpretation. The subject matter then was very different – music from Terezín, the terrible Nazi ghetto camp near Prague – but deeply moving and evocative. Winterreise (winter’s journey) is too, it’s snowy and bleak, although the magic of the music transcends the tragedy of the tale. This concert’s combination of voice and piano from two outstanding musicians, performing Franz Schubert’s famous setting of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller, will undoubtedly be a hot ticket for all Lieder fans.

Piano Trio No 3 in F minor Op 65

Since forming in 2012, the Leonore Piano Trio has established itself as one of the UK’s most accomplished chamber groups conveying a wide range of musical styles in fresh and stylish performances. Here they begin with Haydn’s Piano Trio No 43 in C major, published in 1797 whilst Haydn was in England. It was part of a set dedicated to Mrs Therese Jansen Bartolozzi, an accomplished amateur pianist, and is a challenging piece shot through with wit and mischief. The Leonore players will complete their concert with Antonín Dvořák’s stormy Third Piano Trio, written shortly after the death of his beloved mother. It is a work of unexpected accents and cross-rhythms, full of raw emotion and ambitious ideas.

The Nash Ensemble needs no introduction, and here they present a programme guaranteed to delight. It opens with two Mozart pieces: first, Piano Trio No 6, and then String Quintet No 3, one of the pinnacles of Mozart’s chamber writing, and featuring the composer’s familiar 2-viola quintet line-up. Then fast-forward to 1920 and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ simple, concise, but heart-stoppingly beautiful The Lark Ascending. Bringing this wonderfully popular programme to a conclusion is Mendelssohn’s String Octet. Written by 16 year old Felix this deceptively straightforward work, masking a wealth of invention, was acclaimed as a masterpiece even then. An unmissable concert!

From the composer’s Vienna years, this fiery and passionate work is almost operatic in its range of emotions. Then to another great work: Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, the 33 variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli which may be seen as a microcosm of Beethoven’s art, and have been described by Alfred Brendel as the greatest of all piano works.

Today she’s renowned for her “dazzling interpretative flair and exemplary technique” Classic FM. Her Bath concert will open with Mozart’s Violin Sonata No 27, then to Lili Boulanger and an early piece, Nocturne, written in 1911. Boulanger’s death at the age of 24 deprived the world of a composer whose work showed extraordinary promise. Then to Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No 5, Spring. The origins of this nickname are unclear but it seems appropriate for a warm, radiant work with one of Beethoven’s most gentle and unhurried finales. For this Bath Mozartfest concert Jennifer will be joined by her father, the pianist, composer, conductor and teacher, Jeremy Pike.

Literally meaning ‘darkness’ or obscurity in Latin, Tenebrae gets its name from the office sung during Holy Week when candles are extinguished after each psalm. Tenebrae liturgical celebrations of this kind now exist in the Catholic Church, Anglicanism, Lutheranism, Methodism, Reformed churches and others. The music of tonight’s concert comes from William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, whose names are well known in early English music, and also the lesser known John Mundy and Robert White. All were brought up as Catholics and witnessed the suffering of many as England veered between Catholicism and the new English Protestantism. The works in this concert represent some of the deeply moving devotional music of the day, gloriously illustrating profound religious conviction.

Philip Moore and Simon Crawford-Phillips occupy a unique place amongst piano duos: they are established chamber musicians in their own right, yet since 1995 have devoted several thousands of hours to this most exacting of disciplines, giving them extraordinary musical empathy. Today’s programme opens with Mozart’s Adagio & Allegro, written originally for a mechanical organ. Then to the heat and passion of Southern Spain for Ravel’s own two-piano transcription of Rapsodie espagnole, before heading to Russia for the music of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.

Igor Stravinsky composed his ballet scores at the piano and used 4-hands piano versions to rehearse the productions so the orchestral drama translates into pianistic drama with great effect.

Both scores, completed within a year of the composer’s untimely death at just 31, teem with exquisite lyrical themes and enchanting changes of mood.
