SCOTTSDALE — Equipped with either an IPad or IPhone,

Saager Buch made his way to groups sitting on the lawns of Cactus League ballparks. Disinterested in the games at hand, the junior research economist at the L. William Seidman Research Institute at Arizona State’s W. P. Carey School of Business approached the masses with a survey. As he recorded their answers, Buch rattled off about 20 questions ranging from how much they spent on their hotel to where they came from to how long are they staying. Lightning ignites fires near New River NEW RIVER – Firefighters from the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (ADFFM) and the National Forest were deployed across the state to extinguish several fires that sparked by lightning from recent summer storms. Two of the fires ignited locally; the Bird Fire sparked northwest of Black Canyon City on Thursday, July 26, and the Daisy Fire sparked on New River Mesa in the Tonto National Forest on July 27. “With the summer storms, comes the lightning,” stated ADFFM spokesperson Tiffany Davila in a press release. “And

with the lightning, comes the fires.” The Bird Fire ignited about four miles outside of Black Canyon City and burned approximately 20-acres in the Bradshaw Mountains west of Interstate 17 and south of Maggie Mine Road. The Bird Fire was 100 percent contained by July 30. No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged, according to ADFFM. The Daisy Fire was 100 percent contained on July 30 LIGHTNING FIRES continued on page 10

Fatal car accident causes miles-long back up on I-17 CORDES LAKE – A fatal car accident shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 for several hours south of Cordes Lakes causing detours and traffic to back up for miles on the morning of July 27. The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. last Friday near milepost 259 just south of Bloody Basin Road on I-17, and hazardous material crews were deployed to clean up fuel that was leaking on the roadway, according to Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS). One person died, two other people were transported with injuries, and three other people were checked by medics on the scene and treated for minor injuries. The conditions of the

transported passengers and their identities were not released, according to AZDPS. The accident involved five vehicles, and preliminarily reports indicate it was caused after a commercial trailer truck collided with a passenger vehicle and pickup truck. Another passenger vehicle and a box truck were also involved in the collision, according to AZDPS. Arizona Department of Transportation issued an extended closure detouring northbound cars on state routes 87 and 260, reconnecting vehicles to the I-17 in Camp Verde. The traffic backed up for miles from Bloody Basin Road to Sunset Point as DPS crews worked to clear debris and clean

up fuel that spilled from the commercial vehicle. The investigation is still ongoing.
