Carefree Mayor seeks re-election this November TARA ALATORRE STAFF
CAREFREE – The Carefree Mayor, Les Peterson, has announced his bid for reelection in the town’s upcoming primary elections this August. If he is re-elected in the general elections this November, his second term as mayor would run through December 1, 2020. Peterson was appointed as Carefree’ s interim mayor in the spring of 2015, when Mayor David Schwan stepped down due to health issues and then later passed away. After Schwan passed away, Peterson, who was vice mayor,

at the time, continued to fulfill the mayor’s duties. In 2016 Peterson sought the mayoral seat and ran in the general elections unopposed becoming Carefree’s mayor-elect that August. He won 100 percent of the vote in the 2016 Carefree mayoral elections, according the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office. Cave Creek Balloon Festival to celebrate red, white and blue for Memorial Day weekend TARA ALATORRE STAFF
The Cave Creek Hot Air Balloon Festival will take place on Saturday May 26 starting at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature live music, food trucks and a firework show to celebrate Memorial Day.
CAVE CREEK – The Ninth annual Cave Creek Balloon Festival is happening on May 26 at the Rancho Manana Golf Course’s driving range and will be celebrating red, white and blue for the Memorial Day weekend, including a firework show, food trucks and live bands. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and the Civil Air Patrol will have a color guard presentation followed by a flyover by the Deer Valley Composite Squadron 302. Then Madison Holmes will perform the National Anthem, on the Sanderson’s Ford main stage followed by the Shari Rowe

Band, which is headlining the event and takes the stage at 6:45 p.m. Low-profile lawn chairs are allowed at the main stage area. The hot air balloons will begin to inflate around 7:30 p.m., and there are plenty of activities for kids to participate in. The event will feature a kids zone with free face painting and balloon twisting. Adults can purchase local craft beer from Four Peaks Brewery as well as cocktails and wine.
