Daisy Mountain and Black Canyon Fire Boards to vote on consolidation proposal ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF

NORTH VALLEY – Over the past several months, a proposal of consolidating the Daisy Mountain and Black Canyon Fire Districts has been under discussion, and several public meetings have been held for residents to ask questions and give input. Both fire boards are expected to vote on this proposal at public meetings this month, with Daisy Mountain voting on May 22 and Black Canyon voting on May 23. Both 5-member boards will need to vote unanimously for consolidation for it to be

certain. If the boards do not vote unanimously, or one board votes unanimously but the other does not, the proposal will be put out to a district public vote. DMFD Fire Chief Mark Nichols, who also serves Black Canyon under an administrative services contract, offered background information on the cost-neutral consolidation proposal at a May 11 public meeting at Daisy Mountain Station 141. Nichols noted that Daisy Mountain and Black Canyon

Canon School teacher awarded $5,000 grant by BCBSAZ Fitbit, and a projector to display exercise and yoga videos, as well as games to keep kids active. “I’ve been participating in the Walk On! Challenge for years, but I’ve never had an entire class willing to make the effort to commit to the program. This class was into it wholeheartedly!” said Hall. “The students really enjoyed the activities we were able to complete during the Challenge, and we all look forward to the new supplies and equipment this grant will afford our small, rural school.” In addition to Canon School, other grant recipients included Brianna McLaughlin

BLACK CANYON CITY – Five Arizona teachers and their schools each received a $5,000 grant to fund school programs that fight childhood obesity. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona awarded the five grants based on the winners’ exceptional execution of the 2017 Walk On! Challenge. Winners included Trinka Hall at Canon School in Black Canyon City, who received the grant to help fund P.E. equipment. Canon’s P.E. equipment is in need of replacement. The grant money will fund basic P.E. supplies for students, including balls of all kinds, baseball mitts, bats, jump ropes, yoga mats,
