Carefree to appoint new council member Jan. 9 TARA ALATORRE STAFF

CAREFREE - The Carefree Town Council will appoint a new council member at the Jan. 9 meeting, with the new appointee filling the vacant seat, and fulfilling the remainder of former Councilman Jim Van Allen’s term who passed away in October.

“I believe that we have four outstanding applicants for the open Carefree Town Council position,” said Carefree Mayor Les Peterson in an email statement.

The four candidates that applied for the vacant seat: Tom Cross, Vince D’ Aliesio, Stephen Hatcher and John Traynor. The candidates had to be a Carefree resident, at least 18-years-old, submit their resume and a

statement of interest to the town clerk, and be able and willing to serve the remainder of the term that ends in December 2018.

“The individual selected a that Town Council meeting will be immediately given the Oath of Office, and he will then begin serving the balance of Mr. Van Allen’s term,” said Mayor Peterson in his email.

Originally the town council wanted to appoint a candidate

by Dec. 5, but the time demands put on council members during the holidays caused the vote to be delayed until Jan. 9, he said.

“I believe that each could add a skill set and dimension to the Council that would be very beneficial. I look forward to working with whomever is selected, Peterson said.”

MCACC announces plans to expand west animal shelter and close east shelter ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF

PHOENIX – Maricopa County Animal Care & Control has announced plans to consolidate animal shelter services into one central location; architectural plans may be released by fall 2018.

Currently, the county operates two shelters: the west shelter, located at 27th Ave. and Durango, and the east shelter, located at Loop 101 and Rio Salado. In a Dec. 19 news release, the county shared plans to consolidate all animal shelter services into the renovated and expanded west shelter and close the east shelter.

ACC Board approves community center remodel

Sheriff ’s Office detectives arrested 24-year Donald Wayne Cruse from Black Canyon City for the Dec. 20 armed robbery of the 76 Gas Station.

YCSO said in a news release that deputies and detectives had analyzed the security video and developed information based on knowledge of the area and evidence obtained matching clothing which identified Cruse as the suspect. An ongoing search for Cruse occurred over the next several days.

On Dec. 26, a YCSO detective saw Cruse walking on Bertha Street in Black Canyon City.

Cruse was carrying a loaded .45 caliber handgun in his waistband, a pair of brass knuckles in a pants pocket, identification belonging to another individual, and a quantity of methamphetamine.

Cruse was arrested and booked into the Camp Verde Detention Center on charges including Possession of a defaced Deadly Weapon, Robbery by weapon, and Possession of a Dangerous Drug.

YCSO said, as of Dec. 27, bond had not been set and Cruse remained in custody. He has denied involvement.

Cyber warfare range opens in Phoenix, trains public to fight threats

meeting on Dec. 5 to approve an amended bid to remodel the Anthem Community Center.

The project is scheduled to be completed by late spring 2018.

The project includes a major overhaul for the community center and will cost over $800,000. The project has been discussed at several Board meetings in the past few months, and ACC staff has worked to reduce the costs and cut line items from the project where possible. The cost of the project will be covered from the Enhancement and Reserve Funds, according to ACC plans.

According to documents from ACC staff, the project includes: • Enlarging the reception desk to allow for more efficient customer services • Enclosing the unused balcony to create an expanded free weight/training area on the second floor • Painting refresh of some common areas • Re-carpeting throughout the second floor • Upgrading the free weight area flooring with new carpet and rubber padding • Adding storage for spin bikes, opening up space in the fitness room • Refinishing the wood floor in the fitness room • Modifying the first-floor office area to maximize limited administrative space and create a room for membership services • Incorporating added storage for program supplies No renderings of the planned remodel are available yet. Work is slated to begin on the project next week.

PHOENIX – Arizona already faces a shortage of skilled cyber security workers. And one local cyber security expert said those who do hold these jobs might need to brush up on their skills.

“We have a huge cybersecurity skills gap,” said Brett Scott, who has worked in the IT industry for 30 years. “And most people that are in the cybersecurity industry are so bad at their jobs that if they were in any other job, they would be arrested or indicted for fraud.”

Scott cofounded Arizona Cyber Warfare Range – Metro Phoenix to help close that gap.

The public – from employees already working in the field to parents who want to keep their kids safe on the Internet – can come to the 4,500-square foot building to try their hand at breaking into computer systems, cracking passwords and experimenting with malware.

Canyon University near 27th Avenue and Camelback Road, opened this fall. It’s the second range operated by the Arizona Cyber Threat Response Alliance, a nonprofit group focused on addressing cyber threats in Arizona. The first range opened in Mesa about a decade ago.

“We are open to the community,” Scott said. “We don’t care if you’re old, young, wealthy or poor.”

The range serves several purposes, including introducing the field to potential workers.

The supply of cyber security workers is “very low,” and there are about 285,000 positions

open in the field, including nearly 7,000 in Arizona, according to Cyberseek.

Cybersecuritymastersdegree. org lists the median salary for analysts in the Phoenix metro area as $76,300 annually, with the most experienced degree holders making up to $180,000 per year.

Nick Flahiff, a volunteer at the range, said he works as a security analyst. He points out that people don’t necessarily need advanced degrees to enter the field.

“They need people so badly,” he said. “This is a field you don’t need a college degree.

You don’t need any certifications. Really, all you need is hands-on experience.”

John Garduno, a sophomore studying cyber security at the university, said he became interested in the field after feeling vulnerable to cyber attacks serving during his time in the Marines. He said he wants to work at the FBI after graduation.

“To be an agent, you have to have either a cyber defense degree or criminal justice,” Garduno said.

Garduno said he sees cyber security as a financially stable career option, providing job security in the future with a

well-paid position and benefits working for the government.

“There’s always new advances, new attacks, so you always have to stay on top of it,” he said. “Obviously, they only want the best.”

The program also can help individuals and companies, Scott said.

Lyn Harry White, a spokeswoman for Arizona Small Business Association, said the new warfare range is good for smaller companies that don’t have the resources to protect themselves from the dangers of hacking.

“Small business can really benefit because our cyber security is horrendous,” White said, adding that most small businesses can’t afford to have a full time cyber security expert on staff.

There are more than half a million small businesses in Arizona as of 2015, accounting for nearly one million jobs, according to the association.

“It’s frightening because Arizona is 90 percent small business,” she said.

Scott said digital thieves often target small businesses.

Both ranges hold events and offer training sessions open to the public.

Proposed storage space in Tramonto to be discussed at meeting PHOENIX – A public meeting will be held on Jan. 9 regarding a proposed filing for a special use permit to construct self-storage space at the vacant site next to the Tramonto Office Condominiums. I do not like endings. The hardest word to speak in the English language is “goodbye.”

In happy moments and casual interactions, the phrase “goodbye” is just as benign as saying to the clerk at the grocery store, “how are you?” We mean it as a pleasantry and friendly

conversational small talk. Some cultures find it odd that we Americans are so “open” with just about anyone. Well, that is the way we do things. We say “hello,” we greet each other, we say “goodbye.”

I went to the airport over the holidays to pick up a close friend. There is something about the airport and masses of people hugging, laughing, crying, waving and even weeping during the holidays, that reminds me of how hard it is part with a loved one. We don’t want our mother to leave, our child to go back to college, or grandkids to head back home. The hardest, most painful word ever spoken may be “good bye” but the word

spoken most often is “stay.” And all throughout the airport, in whispered sobs the word “stay” is said a thousand times a day.

Friends are not always easy to come by. Colleagues who have been a part of our lives and bring us joy and support are also a treasure that may grace our lives. To have a loving family is a blessing. To have good friends and wonderful colleagues makes all challenges in the world possible to endure. The people we surround ourselves with can bring us happiness, challenge and fun. They make life worth living!

There are plenty of reasons why the people we like and love end up moving around.

That job in Chicago is calling.

There is military service. A new adventure awaits. College leads to travel and a new life in a different state. A door opens

and we walk through it. Yet the beauty about the Holidays is that all roads lead home and we realize that Christmas is not about the presents, but about who is present with us. And maybe the most poignant New Year’s resolution is to strive to surround ourselves with positive, helpful, kind and caring people.

One of those people for me has been Elizabeth Medora.

And you know her too. She has been the Managing Editor and extraordinary writer for the Foothills Focus for many years.

You have read her articles many times and her stellar reporting has brought the paper awards and recognition! She has been my editor and sounding board, helping to improve my columns (I am not so good at grammar) and she is a real “treasure.”

Sadly, I find that she is leaving for another opportunity.

And I cannot bring myself to say

that little evil word, “goodbye.”

So I won’t.

The thing about endings, is that if we are lucky, we can learn from the experience. So when I write, I will try to ask myself, “what would Elizabeth say,” or more accurately, “how might I be better.” She is a young, talented and intelligent woman who will go on to do great things. I know we will all miss the contributions she made to informing us about our community.

So now I feel as though I am standing in the airport, watching a dear friend board a plane. I have no words (and I am a writer). A door has opened and she is walking through it.

The only thing I can think of to say right now is “stay.”

Peoria Police Department offers Citizen’s Police Academy PEORIA – Get a behindthe-scenes look at the work of the Peoria Police Department through the Citizen’s Police Academy, starting Wednesday, Jan. 10. The program will run through March 28.

The Citizen’s Police Academy provides participants an exciting “hands-on” behind the scenes look at the field of law enforcement. Hosted in the Peoria Public Safety Administration Building at 8351 W. Cinnabar in downtown Peoria, this program is a twelveweek course that meets every Wednesday night from 6-9 p.m.

Peoria Police said in a news release that the purpose of the academy is to promote the Community Oriented Policing philosophy through the exchange of information between citizens and law enforcement officials.

Participants will learn what it takes to become a police officer, from the hiring process to the police academy experience, from using a firearms training simulator to executing a high-risk vehicle stop. a career, those who want to learn more about their local police department, or just want to have the experience of a lifetime.

Multiple copper wire thefts under investigation in Yavapai County YAVAPAI COUNTY – The Yavapai County Sheriff ’s Office issued a news release on Dec. 20 regarding a copper wire theft at Cold Water Canyon and I-17 in Black Canyon City. Since the original release was issued, the media office was notified about several additional cases of wire theft occurring recently in Yavapai County.

YCSO and Arizona Department of Transportation officials are asking the public to remain alert for suspicious activity when travelling during the late night/early morning hours, especially along major roadways where side streets or on/off ramps intersect under overhead lights. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau are consolidating these incidents and working with law enforcement partners in an attempt to identify and locate suspects.

Additional copper wire thefts: • Sept. 7, 2017: Prescott Valley – ADOT reported more than 8,600 feet of copper wire stolen from junction boxes north and south of Lakeshore Drive at Fain Road. These boxes supply power for the street lamps along the east side of Fain Road. Dollar loss estimate, including labor to reinstall, was placed at $10,000.

• Sept. 20, 2017: Prescott Valley – Same area as Sept. 7 Prescott Valley theft, except targeting the west side of the roadway. ADOT reported more than 15,000 feet of 8-gauge copper wire stolen from the streetlight array at the intersection of Fain Road and Lakeshore Drive. Dollar loss estimated at $9,350.

• Nov. 13: Prescott Valley – ADOT reported the theft of 8,000 feet of copper wire from junction boxes between Granite Dells and Great Western Drive in Prescott Valley. Loss estimated at $5,000.

• Dec. 18: Seligman – ADOT reported the theft of 600 feet of 8-gauge copper wire covered with black insulation.

The theft likely occurred sometime in recent weeks at the west bound on ramp for 40 in Seligman involving wirin for street lights. Loss estimate not provided.

Additionally, Prescott Valley Police Department has at least one additional copper wire theft case reported, as does the Yavapai Tribal Police involving a theft near the VA Hospital on Highway 89 in November or December of this year.

Suspect arrested in Yuma for deadly stabbing at Peoria home PEORIA – Peoria Police are investigating a homicide after a 57-year-old man was stabbed and killed on December 23, at approximately 3 p.m. at a residence near the 6700 block of west El Cortez Place.

When officers arrived at the scene, Jefferey Falesch, had sustained a single stab wound, and was then transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. The weapon used in the stabbing was recovered at the scene of the crime, Peoria Police Media Relations Officer, Brandon Sheffert, said in a press release.

Peoria Police determined that the suspect fled the scene of the crime in a 2003 Chevrolet Impala, and was identified as 30-year-old, Anthony Paul Kupreisis.

Authorities were able to detain him by releasing information about the suspect and his vehicle to surrounding law enforcement agencies in Arizona and California.

Yuma County Sheriff ’s Office took custody of Kupreisis where he was booked on one count of first-degree murder. He will be transported back to Maricopa County this week, according to reports.

“We want to thank the U.S. Border Patrol, Yuma County Sheriff ’s Office, the media and the public for their assistance in locating this suspect,” said Officer Sheffert in the press release.

The investigation is still ongoing.

reallocate staff to services that reunite people with their pets and prevent the break-up of families in the first place.”

Providing enough space for the number of animals the county takes in is paramount, and the goal in this plan is to expand the west shelter to ensure adequate space for all the pets in need.

In a follow-up email to The Foothills Focus, Maricopa County Communications Director Fields Moseley noted that they don’t know the exact capacity that will be in the final design, but that the county is committed to providing enough space for current and future shelter needs.

“There is no room for expansion at the shelter in Mesa and the building doesn’t function

well,” Deputy County Manager Reid Spaulding said in the Dec. 19 release. “The mission is to find permanent homes for more animals. That takes a facility with the capacity and layout to meet the demands we are seeing today and expect in the future.”

Moseley noted that there is no decision on when construction would begin.

“Design for a facility of this type can take about a year so the Board of Supervisors could potentially have plans by fall 2018,” Moseley said.

According to a Maricopa. gov open letter from Director Martin, MCACC has grappled with what to do about its presence in the East Valley for many years. Martin noted that the east shelter has remained “virtually unchanged since the ‘80s”. Martin added that the standard of care fo the animals would not meet today’s standards.

However, there is an enormous and rarely discussed cost to these caring people and the animals,” Martin said in the letter. “There is still no ideal housing for cats. The housing for dogs and lack of a proper exercise yard creates stressful conditions leading to illness and behavior problems.”

Due to these and other space issues, the county shelter is seeking options to improve homeless pets’ time at county shelters and improve the customer service experience for county pet owners.

“We took all of this into consideration, looking at available resources, trends in animal welfare and the experiences of our colleagues around the country,” Martin said. “Our conclusion is that centralizing our services in one high-functioning center will be a good step for all of Maricopa County’s homeless animals and the people who care about them.”

According to the Dec. 19 release, the Board of Supervisors recently approved $1.8 million to design a central shelter using the latest science about animal behavior and workflow in this type of facility.

“Animal intake in Maricopa County has declined 13% every year for the last five

Expansion of the playgroup program is a priority in the design plans. In early 2017, MCACC implemented Dogs Playing for Life, an enrichment program that lets dogs socialize in playgroups, allowing staff to assess the dogs’ sociability with each other and learn more about the dogs’ personalities.

The playgroup program has helped relieve kennel stress and has encouraged more adoptions, sometimes right out of the playgroup yard.

Moseley emphasized that increased space for Dogs Playing for Life and general activity for dogs is a big part of the design work.

“While the current Durango shelter has a nice play area, the designers and county leadership envision something much larger,” Moseley described.

Per the news release, the county hasn’t yet decided what will be done with the east shelter building once the plans are complete. Deputy County Manager Spaulding said in the news release that they are hopeful that “perhaps an organization engaged in animal welfare will express interest in the building.”

Carefree Desert Gardens hosts first program season CAREFREE – The Carefree Desert Gardens seminar series is hosting its first program on the season on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Phoenix offers Christmas tree, wreath recycling options PHOENIX – The Phoenix Public Works Department is offering residents a green option for getting rid of old, dried out holiday trees and wreaths by offering recycling drop offs throughout the city from now until Jan. 7, 2018.

Current customers of Phoenix City Services can drop off single trees and their wreaths at the marked designated areas at participating parks only. The trees and wreaths will be recycled, diverting waste from landfills, and certain species of container trees can be replanted in local parks as well, according to the city’s website.

The North Valley parks with a drop off location are: Deer Valley Park on 19th Avenue and Utopia Road; Paradise Valley Park on 40th Street south of Union Hills Drive; Sereno Park on 56th Street and Sweetwater Avenue; Cactus Park on 38th Avenue and Cactus Road; Mountain View Park on Seventh Avenue south of Peoria Avenue; and North Gateway Transfer Station, 30205 N. Phoenix: 2017 was the warmest year on record TARA ALATORRE STAFF

PHOENIX – The year 2017 was the all-time warmest year on record in the Phoenix Valley with an average temperature of 77.3 degrees Fahrenheit, beating the previous record set in 2014, according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

In fact, 2017 tied as the second hottest year for the state, with the first 21 days this December being the fifth warmest on record with an average temperature of 60.5 degrees. Phoenix also saw the fourth hottest temperature ever recorded on June 20, 2017, with a high of 119 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the NWS in Phoenix.

“We’ve been seeing a general warming trend of the atmosphere over the last 30-40 years or so; and then couple that with the incredible amount of urbanization over the Valley it would be a fair assumption to make,” he said.

The temperature-setting record Phoenix broke refers specifically to the Sky Harbor area because that is where the official readings are taken by NWS. Although NWS does forecast the entire Phoenix Metro area, which differentiate

at specific locations there are some differences in the data depending on specific locations around Maricopa County, Deemer said in his email to The Foothills Focus.

“I think generally, people extrapolate those numbers for much of the Valley, although all of us know there is great difference depending on your specific location,” Deemer said.

“For example, we might forecast 100° for Sky Harbor (and say Phoenix) but our forecast for Cave Creek would likely be a few degrees cooler.”

Along with the record setting high temperatures, another predominant weather trend Phoenix saw in 2017 was the prolonged periods without rainfall. It was one of the driest seasons in the Phoenix Valley, exceeding over 100 days without rainfall, which is one of the longest rain-free streaks in the city, according to NWS. Deemer went on to say that the important take away from the record-breaking heat is that the hot climate can be very dangerous, noting that the heat kills hundreds of people in Arizona every year including young, old, sick and healthy people.

“We are seeing the warming as a larger trend,” he said.

“Maybe the key takeaway is that the heat is arriving sooner and staying longer. We can expect to break additional records.”

paintings even the most famous and most successful among us did not escape the smoking habit with their life.

Albert grew up in New York City before World War II. In 1943, he graduated from the Music and Art High School in the city, and promptly enlisted in the U.S. Army for the next 3.5 years. After being discharged in 1947, Albert headed home to New York. Using the help of the newly adopted GI Bill, Albert enrolled at Pratt College of Design and Illustration.

While attending Pratt, he honed his natural talent for detailed drawing and expanded his knowledge of composition for use in print media. Albert completed his degree at Pratt, but he wanted to continue expanding his painting skills, so he continued to take advanced classes in oil painting at the Art Students League and the Semf School of Art, both in NYC. It wasn’t long before the job opportunities in advertising came rolling in for the gifted young illustrator. Albert took work with a number of art studios and advertising agencies in NYC designing and illustrating ads for newspapers and magazines.

To supplement his income and to support his growing family, Albert often did freelance work, which proved to be an excellent way to make further contacts in the advertising industry. It wasn’t long before he landed his dream position as Art Director for a large corporation, where he stayed until his retirement in 1990. During his career, oil painting was never completely set aside. It served him as a hobby for producing work as gifts he presented to family and friends. But the purpose of his painting would change when Albert encountered an advertising campaign that was quickly grabbing a lot of attention, the AntiSmoking movement.

One of the elements used by the campaign was a newspaper article written about President of the United States and Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant. The

article mentioned the forensic museum, in Washington D.C., held a collection of glass jars that contained human body parts preserved in formaldehyde; President Grant’s larynx was one of the specimens. It was removed after his death from cancer of the throat. Albert learned that he was a cigar chain smoker his entire adult life, no doubt the result of his cancer. Now Albert was curious, how many other elected officials and celebrities in American History had died as the result of the smoking habit. To his astonishment “classic film heroes” John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Steve McQueen, and a series of “Marlboro Men” all turned up in his research as dying from their smoking habit. A

Monte’s Favorite Films of 2017 MONTE YAZZIE MOVIE COLUMNIST

2017 was an interesting year filled with heavy moments of frustration, conflict, and confusion throughout our world.

However, I’d like to believe that it also had its moments of joy, peace, and tranquility in smaller more motivating ways. Film was equally as divisive, with films from numerous walks of genre making exceptional statements that were melancholy, heartfelt, and argumentative.

That’s a good thing; film should challenge itself to take risks and make statements, to portray and paint the world in different ways with different perspectives.

That’s what this artistic medium has the power to do, influence in ways both subtle and direct.

With every horror film that made a social statement, drama that challenged contemporary ideologies, romantic comedy that portrayed difference with commonality, or science fiction movie that provided insight into a piece of humanity…it all serves in making film accessible to new voices, new ideas, and new visions. It’s, in my humble opinion, the purpose of any artistic endeavor. Here are the films that moved me, enlightened me, and captured my spirit in 2017. My favorite films of 2017.

15. Good Time A night of bad choices follows a despicable young man named Connie, played with poise and energy by Robert Pattinson, as he tries to stay one step ahead of all the trouble that is trying to find him. The Safdie Brothers direct this story of brotherhood and consequence with pulsing anxiousness and vibrant life.

14. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” can be an emotional journey at times, but it’s also undeniably fascinating watching such interesting characters journey through a

film that is at many times somber, comedic, and tragic; sometimes all of those emotions at the same time. Frances McDormand gives an emotionally charged performance that is one of the best of 2017.

13. The Beguiled It’s understandable why director Sophia Coppola would remake the 1971 pulp drama “The Beguiled”; the director has a particular talent for crafting strong and complicated female leads but also creating a multifaceted ensemble.

Coppola’s version of “The Beguiled” is different than the original, a unique vision that is lonesome, beautiful and captivating.

12. Hounds of Love Director Ben Young composes an unsettling character study in the debut feature “Hounds of Love”. The film centers on a serial killer couple living in Perth, Australia during the 1980s. Young shrewdly constructs this film, utilizing effective filmmaking techniques that help in building the suspense and making the nastier bits much more shocking than they actually are. The performances are exceptional here; along with the creative hand of Ben Young, “Hounds of Love” is an effective piece of cinema.

11. Lady Bird The story of a mother and daughter is superbly told by writer/director Greta Gerwig.

Boosting standout performances from Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, this film about the growing pains of growing up is sweetly genuine, making it feel somewhat autobiographical.

The portrayal of youth here is one of the best of any film in 2017.

10. Call Me By Your Name This coming-of-age story gives way to a love story that is gorgeously composed and

peaked with performances that are achingly passionate.

Director Luca Guadagnino’s film “Call Me By Your Name” is patiently paced, building the intimacy, the confusion, the lust, and the ultimate joys of first love with heartbreaking authenticity.

Timothee Chalamet gives a stunning and confident performance as Elio.

It’s one of those films that holds an exquisite power because of how it handles and portrays the emotions of love; it will stay with you far after it ends.

9. Blade Runner 2049 Director Denis Villaneuve takes the task of continuing the Ridley Scott classic scifi saga with “Blade Runner 2049”. Villaneuve’s striking visual style and skillful narrative design is a perfect companion to the original film, taking the memorable aspects that play proper tribute to the

1982 film and adding exceptional elements that propose new questions concerning the nature of humanity and thought-provoking ideologies concerning technologies influence on the future.

Villaneuve and team have created a visual stunning sequel.

8. The Big Sick Romantic comedies can be a tedious effort. While “The Big Sick” may feel familiar, it moves and operates in very genuine and unique ways. Themes of clashing cultures, race issues, and relationship complications are all handled with care, with attention given to the small and sometimes complicated bits that flesh out a script and make characters more relatable and stories more authentic. “The Big Sick” hits so many satisfying notes it’s almost impossible not to find something that makes you smile. The jokes are sweet while

also having an edgy element, and the romantic qualities are sincere due large in part to some really great performances.

It’s the best romantic comedy of 2017.

7. Raw Director Julia Ducournau has crafted an impressive debut film with her uncomfortable and emotionally daring film “Raw”.

Ducournau utilizes the film to challenge how filmmakers are utilizing the genre to tell stories, especially ones dealing with commentary concerning gender and sexual empowerment.

“Raw” is a coming-of-age film that displays the fragility of the process of growing up but also the complicated relationship found in every individualized family unit. Raw, in many ways, is the best description for this film.

Baby Driver Director Edgar Wright has always had a distinguishable style; however, with every film in his growing catalog, the director has only become better at combining his unique editing, camera, and narrative flow into a tightly packaged work. With “Baby Driver”, the director may have perfected his style, making a film that is ridiculously fun and filled with creative filmmaking elements. “Baby Driver” doesn’t do anything new to transcend the heist genre, in fact it takes a lot from the 1978 Walter Hill film “The Driver”; still what Wright does with everything that defines this specific subgenre of action film is bold and innovative, crafting one of the best music videos ever made.

Director Darren Aronofsky, the filmmaker behind films like “Requiem for a Dream” and “Black Swan”, composes a story that functions as a metaphor, a parable, and a satire; possibly much more depending on what you might be looking for or feeling at that particular moment. Aronofsky paints an allegory that is a bold artistic expression with equally frustrating and fascinating strokes; it’s deeply personal and echoes sentiments from places religious, political, and ecological. “mother!” in many instances is what filmmaking should be, a vessel for the expression of ideas.

4. Dunkirk Film has a funny way of changing how one perceives historical events; the lens of cinema can paint new pictures and compose narratives in ways that alter the true significance of what happened in the past. Christopher Nolan, understanding of this concept, composes “Dunkirk” with an emphasis on emotion and perspective. In doing this, Nolan has crafted an immersive experience, a war film that has all the technical aptitude the

director has built his career upon but also the emotional quality associated with the aspect of a soldier’s survival. “Dunkirk” is an exceptional war film that has rousing heart. Nolan proves again why he is one of best directors to do the job.

3. Get Out No film, of all genre of films released in 2017, felt more timely and of the moment than Jordan Peele’s “Get Out”.

Released mere months after the divisive Presidential election, the United States was at a boiling point with social concerns surrounding race and gender.

“Get Out” tapped into race, cultural, and socioeconomic issues, transcending yet honoring the horror genre with a film that manipulated tension and crafted an atmosphere like a Hitchcock film. Jordan Peele proves himself more than just a comedic talent but perhaps one of the most conscious filmmakers currently working.

2. Phantom Thread Director Paul Thomas Anderson and actor Daniel DayLewis are similar in that they strive for a unique purpose and rally for perfection. “Phantom Thread” is a complicated love story, one that harbors themes of dominating control, deep and dangerous emotional connections, and a passion that is not easily defined. Anderson paints an image here that will linger long after it is over, not because of anything offensive or obscene but because of the startling and subtle emotion portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps, a newcomer who steals scenes from one of the greatest living actors in the

business. This is supposedly Day-Lewis’ last film; if so, he ends on a fine note.

1. The Shape of Water “The Shape of Water” is one of the most beautiful and superbly acted films in 2017.

Guillermo Del Toro composes another fairytale, this time with a romantic touch that permeates far beyond the premise of an amphibious creature meeting a mute woman might suggest. The director has proven throughout many films that he can find beauty in even the darkest of places, so when something so tender and touching is on display, as it is in “The Shape of Water”, the film is filled to the edges with elegance. Del Toro has always blended and manipulated genre characteristics; the auteur is quickly defining his own genre of filmmaking. It is movie magic at its finest.

Archaeology Society meeting to focus on ancient pottery

CAVE CREEK – The Arizona Archaeology Society – Desert Foothills Chapter will meet on Jan. 10, at the Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church in Cave Creek.

The meeting will feature Arizona Humanities speaker Allen Dart, who will offer a presentation on Ancient Southwestern Native American Pottery.

Dart will show and discuss Native American ceramic styles that characterized

specific peoples and eras in the U.S. Southwest prior to about 1450, and share information about how archaeologists use pottery for dating archaeological sites and interpreting ancient lifeways. Dart will discuss the importance of context in archaeology, how the things people make change in style over time, and how different styles are useful for identifying various cultures and dating archaeological sites.

His many illustrations include examples of ancient pottery types made throughout the American Southwest

from about 2,000 to 500 years ago. This program is made possible by Arizona Humanities.

Dart is a Registered Professional Archaeologist who has worked professionally and volunteered in Arizona and New Mexico archaeology since 1975.

He is the state cultural resources specialist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Arizona.

Additionally, he volunteers his time as executive director of Old Pueblo Archaeology Center, a Tucson nonprofit organization that he founded in 1993 to provide educational and scientific

programs in Southwestern archaeology, history, and cultures. He received the Arizona Governor’s Archaeology Advisory Commission Award in Public Archaeology, the Arizona Archaeological Society’s Professional Archaeologist of the Year Award, the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society’s Victor R. Stoner Award, and other honors for his efforts to bring archaeology and history to the public.

This meeting is open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m., with refreshments available at 7 p.m.

Amber was found on Nov. 7 with an injury to her neck. She received medical care and has spent the past few weeks recovering, and she is now ready to find a loving and patient family to adopt her, where she can feel safe and continue to heal. She is shy, but once she feels comfortable, she just wants to snuggle.
