Sailing off into the sunset is everybody’s retirement dream, but even an idyllic lifestyle like this can pose its own challenges as much-loved Queenstown couple Ross and Polly Buchanan have found out.

Ross, a Queenstown dentist for almost 30 years, and Polly, his dental assistant wife, set sail on their new 13.7m (45-foot) catamaran, Vaanui, in early June from Brisbane, Australia.

By early this month they’d just sailed 550 nautical miles in a 12-day period – a trip that took them five months 10 years ago when they set sail for a high seas adventure with their two daughters, Gabby and Kelby, then 14 and 13.

“It was a pretty quick trip and we missed calling into some beautiful areas along Australia’s East Coast, but fortunately we’d covered this coastline before with the girls,” says Ross. They spent the first eight weeks of their trip in and around the Gold Coast inland waterways waiting for parts and work to be done on the boat. “Everything seemed to be not working,” says Ross, “the navigation system, batteries, Mastervolt, roller fueller, radio and plumbing. We were finding out very quickly just how expensive boats can be,” he says. “These unforeseen problems have drained all the money we’d hoped would see us through the first year of our sailing adventure.”

However, nothing that a few locum positions in Australia shouldn’t fix from November onwards. “That time was also important for us to really get to know the boat and her systems,” says Ross. “Vaanui is sailing like a dream now.”

Their longest stretch away from civilisation was nine days sailing from island to island, anchoring at various locations. Overnight sailing has posed a few challenges. “We did one overnight sail, sailing for two days, taking two-hourly night shift watches throughout the night,” says Polly. “It’s very tiring and you don’t sleep that well. It’s not ideal doing overnight passages with only two of you on board. You end up like a walking zombie.”

Their first all-nighter was the perfect example of this. “We were coming into Gladstone Harbour and we came within a boat length of hitting a pylon (channel marker),” says Ross. “We had the boat on autopilot and were unaware that the current in the channel was having an effect on our course until it was almost too late. I looked up just in time to see our near collision about to happen, which would have done some serious damage,” he says. It was a great reminder to always have an eye out, especially around shipping channels and busy boating areas.

Their next night sailing stint was much more pleasant. The weather was warm and the sky was filled with a galaxy of stars and a beautiful full moon to light their way. “I saw four shooting stars and it was a nice time to reflect on life,” says Ross. “I did worry about hitting whales at night, as this area has so many of them at this time of year when they migrate up the coast to the warmer regions to mate and have their calves.”

They’d sailed from the Gold Coast to Moreton Bay and on to Mooloolaba, Fraser Island, Gladstone, Great Keppel, Pearl Bay, Middle Percy Island, Scawfell Island then Keswick, Brampton, Goldsmith, Thomas, Seaforth the Whitsunday Islands and Airlie Beach. From there they headed to South Mole, Hook, back to Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands.

Here they anchored in a bay called Gulnar Inlet, just 20 minutes from Hamilton Island, ready to collect their eldest daughter Gabby, who flew in from New Zealand with her friend Rosie and boyfriend Karl for a week.

“The beauty of this great little anchorage is it has internet and is nice and sheltered,” says Ross. “We wanted to be nice and close for pick up.

We’re so excited to have our visitors arriving – the first we’ve actually had to stay overnight on board the boat,” says Ross. “We just absolutely love them and can’t wait to hug them and enjoy some fun adventures together,” says Polly. It’s every family’s dream holiday – sailing around the Whitsundays, snorkelling, paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking and diving during the day, followed by a few drinks and games in the evenings.

However, the Buchanans have a ‘no drinking’ policy on board until they are on anchor somewhere in the evening around “sundowner time”, usually around 5pm.

The plan for September was to sail around the area not going too much further north where there were crocodiles to worry about. “We’ll then work for four to six months and may look at heading to Indonesia next year,” says Ross.

The weather’s been amazing, constantly clear and sunny, usually around 24 degrees Celsius, sometimes warmer – a stark contrast to their delivery of the boat from New Caledonia to Brisbane last August. “We had lightning and 47 knots of wind then.”

Sailing can be very physical at times as with this boat the sails are huge and require us both to hoist them,” says Ross. “We go to bed early around 8pm and are usually up around 6.30am.”

They try to keep their fitness up by running or walking when they can and they eat healthy food, but both miss their bikes. “Down time” is spent playing their guitar and ukulele, reading books, or occasionally watching a movie, says Polly.

Ross – the boat’s resident engineer, plumber, electrician and skipper - spends a good deal of time reading boating manuals to learn all he can.

Typically the day begins with freshly-brewed coffee and breakfast at 6.30am, following by a swim in the sea, fresh water shower then it’s up the anchor and hoist the sails to set off for the next destination. “Depending on the wind that might take either one hour or eleven hours, so sailing teaches you to slow your life down,” says Ross. Arrivals means drop the anchor, tidy up the lines and stow the sails away before a 5pm wine and peanuts before dinner. “I’m chief cook and Ross is usually checking the weather and probable routes for the next day,” says Polly.

Boredom can set in, especially if the wind is light, but when the engine’s off and the wind is in the sails it’s a tremendous freeing feeling gliding along at speed. There’s been the odd terrible anchorage where the roll coming in makes for a horrible night of constant creaking noises and bouncing, but the good definitely outweighs the bad.

A highlight has been listening to whales at night. One even settled to feed her calf within a boat length of the boat and rested there for 45 minutes. “It was quite a magical and spiritual encounter,” says Polly.

Their scariest moment was dragging anchor at MacClean Island at 3am in a 35-knot blow with 20 Riveria boats all around them.

For Ross the journey has provided a wonderful sense of freedom with “no groundhog days”. “The best part is a windy day with the sail fully reefed and we’re cranking at 13 knots. The hardest part is the anxiety about the cost of everything as the list keeps growing, but I’ve overcome that by accepting I’ll need to work for a while again soon.”

For Polly the stunning localities, beauty of nature – colourful reef fish and whales and incredible sunrises and sunsets - have made it all worthwhile. It’s been huge learning how to operate the boat and she misses her comfortable bed, family and friends, cat and chickens. “I probably also miss that I can’t spend money at the markets we visit as we have to be very frugal.”

FROM THE TEAM Just when we were planting out the vegetable gardens and cutting the daffodils, we were hit with snow. It made me realise how lucky we are to live here! The surrounding landscapes looked beautiful. Kat and I couldn't help ourselves but head outside and attempt to make a snowman.

THE BANKS OF THE KAWARAU Hidden along the banks of the mighty Kawarau River are countless tales of adventure, drama and intrigue that until now have never been properly told.

In his latest book, ‘The Banks of the Kawarau – Tales of the Past’, Kelvin Heights’ writer and researcher George Singleton has done the wider district a huge favour. George has done a brilliant job of documenting the colourful history of the river which has been the lifeblood of both the Wakatipu Basin and Central Otago districts for centuries.

A southern man at heart, Southland-raised George, a retired local government chief executive, has always has a strong affiliation with the Wakatipu and Central Otago region. As a kid in the 1940’s he spent hours in the hills around Arrowtown exploring old relics, working a gold pan, shooting rabbits, fishing the creeks and rivers and questioning runholders and old identities and miners. The book is packed with these colourful anecdotes and tales – gold in its own right that would’ve otherwise been lost to the district.

“The Kawarau is not like any other river,” says George. “It can be serene and placid, but also treacherous and dangerous for the uninitiated or inexperienced.” It’s tranquil, rugged banks have witnessed their share of tragedy, hardship and failure. They’ve been traversed by Maori moving west to gather the revered pounamu (greenstone). The river has also aided the passage of thousands of gold prospectors from the 1860’s through until the 1880’s. Runholders, road makers and settlers followed, overcoming insurmountable obstacles and hardships.

George takes us on a journey along the Kawarau from Lake Wakatipu to its junction with the Clutha River at Cromwell. These waters have been travelled and crossed by dredge and punt – the rugged banks scaled and explored. Early Maori, explorers, pastoralists, prospectors, miners, pioneer settlers, station holders, even robbers, have graced these banks.

The river’s journey passes vanished homesteads, destroyed rapids, bridges, memories of old punts and ferries, abandoned hotels, grog shops and the hopes and dreams of past generations.

This story exposes hardship and wealth, good times and bad, abandoned settlements emerging into new townships, tourist centres, vineyards and the extreme outdoor adventure of today.

It’s packed with precious old photographs, from the Kawarau Falls rapids at Frankton in their original form before they were blasted to William Rees’ original homestead at the Falls (Falls Station), later the homestead of the late ‘Cap’ and Jessie Jardine.

George also covers in depth the ‘Fiasco at the Falls’ – the building of the dam at Kawarau Falls to lower the river level in order to win gold from its depths.

Fascinating history and photographs of the old Brunswick Flour Mill, which sat on the riverbed at Frankton, grace these pages as do tales of early travel on the Frankton ferry.

In a fascinating development near the completion of the book George discovered that a local friend’s great grandfather, Scottish immigrant John Boyd, had pencilled a moving poem also entitled ‘The Banks of the Kawarau’. This heartfelt poem tells of a father’s heartache for his sons who’d all left the district to fight in World War One. One of John’s great granddaughters still lives on the same spot where John lived, near Frankton, today.

The river’s history winds on through to Gentle Annie, Roaring Meg and Cromwell.

“This fascinating river has provided communities with access, wealth, hardship, success and failure,” says George. “The development of this area is in its hands. Water can never be conquered. It can only be harnessed and used wisely. Nature will always be the final winner.”

Kiwi Harvest crews show how it's done.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Perfectly good food that would otherwise be wasted is now being delivered to local help agencies thanks, to a clever initiative launched by Sustainable Queenstown.

The Food Rescue Programme, launched in mid-September, was born after Sustainable Queenstown was approached by local social conscience foodie and PlantB founder Richard Docherty.

“Richard has worked in hospitality for so many years and he has a very sustainable focus in his businesses,” says Sustainable Queenstown cofounder Esther Whitehead. “He asked what we could do to ensure all the food that was being thrown out by local supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and hotels wasn’t wasted,” she says.

There’s been great support locally with supermarkets donating all of their food that’s coming close to its ‘best before’ date, says Esther. Cafes, hotels and restaurants also have to discard a lot of food that is going to waste and some of them are starting to get on board with the programme too, she says. “It’s all perfectly good to eat and we collect it and deliver it to the likes of the Salvation Army, Happiness House and the ‘Let’s Eat’ programme.” A team of volunteers cook up food and deliver meals to families and people in need and those going through a tough time. The agencies are welcoming the support we’re providing because it’s taking the logistical side off their hands,” says Esther. “Happiness House and

the Salvation Army tell us there are ‘working poor’ in town who come in to their agencies weekly for gifted fresh food and non-perishables.”

Sustainable Queenstown is working with Kiwi Harvest, a nationwide, not-for-profit organisation that operates in six cities around the country.

“It’s a successful tried and tested model and Kiwi Harvest has great relationships with all the supermarkets,” she says.

“So much produce grown for the supermarkets gets wasted as farmers have to grow in excess of what is ordered and through Kiwi Harvest we can tap into that supply chain of food,” says Esther.

“The programme prevents food wastage and at the same time helps people in need, connecting them with a good supply of food, so it’s a winwin situation for the environment and the social needs of the district,” she says. “We do the running around, delivering the food to the agencies so they can focus on helping people who have come to them.”

Sustainable Queenstown raised funds from this year’s Queenstown Rotary Winter Festival ‘Duck Race’ to kickstart the programme. That money’s being used for the van and driver to collect and deliver food, and to build more business relationships with cafes and hotels.

The local programme is being trialled for three months while the full extent of the need is established. However, it’s intended to continue the programme as part of the great work that’s being done locally to reduce food waste to landfill and instead channel that into nourishing the community, says Esther.

They now have 80 salons across New Zealand, but Vivo Hair & Beauty co-owners James Carlisle and Lynden Mason didn’t exactly venture into the hair and beauty industry the way that most people do. Their story began 12 years ago, says James. “Lynden was studying to be an optometrist and I’m married to one. We kept bumping into each other at optometry events,” he laughs, when asked about the unconventional background to the Vivo group.

The duo initially bought an optometry practice together, with the partnership turning out to be a huge success. Before long, James and Lynden had 10 optometry practices and an online shop. “We ran out of opportunities to grow,” says Lynden says. They ended up selling their successful venture. “Growth is a huge driver for us. We were looking for a challenge.” As it happened, that challenge manifested itself in an opportunity to buy a hair and beauty salon in Auckland and Vivo was born. “The hair and beauty industry had so many exciting aspects. We knew that this was where our future in business lay.”

That was in 2010. Fast-forward eight years and the Vivo group of salons has exploded across New Zealand, including two in Queenstown Vivo Hair Duke St and Vivo Hair & Beauty Remarkables Park. Despite having 600 staff members across the country, Vivo feels like one big family. Vivo Remarkables Park salon manager Amy Roche says that’s one of the best things about Vivo. “We have a really strong support team and there’s amazing training from our award-winning national educators.” James and Lynden visit all of their salons regularly. “They’re just amazing guys and everybody wants to do their best for them.”

Amy herself is Queenstown born and bred with more than 20 years’ experience in the industry. The salon also has a full time beauty therapist, Chelsea Jose. “She’s just phenomenal,” says Amy. “We have a very experienced group and it shows.” In fact, the team has been so busy that the salon has plans to expand in the very near future. “We are always on the look-out for talented stylists to join our amazing team.”

With an extensive and ongoing national training programme, clients are treated to the latest in hair technology and education from this group of talented Vivo stylists. “We have at least one or two training days every month,” says Amy. Well, spring did get off to a good start….for the most part.

September 17’s shock snowfall left local residents aghast with the temperature plummeting from a high of 21.1degCelsius enjoyed two days earlier to just a high of 4. Snow was quite thick on the ground in places. The skiers and snowboarders were happy with welcome big dumps to boost the remainder of the season. The snow was preceded by a deluge of 40.5mm of heavy rain with more than half of September’s normal average rainfall landed on the Wakatipu Basin in a number of hours. “We were below our average rainfall for September until then,” says our weather watcher, David Crow. Kinloch copped some of the worst with residents there waking to 15cm of snow that day. However, the sun soon returned to drum up a fresh enthusiasm for spring gardening and boating and David promises more of the ‘above normal’ temperatures that the district has been becoming accustomed to during October. “It should be slightly higher than the normal average temperature for October and drier.”

FEIJOADA FUNDRAISING FEASTS AND FAIR South American feijoada fans are queueing up for a taste of heaven outside St Andrew’s Church in Stanley Street again. The Wakatipu’s Global Community Church has re-launched its monthly Saturday feijoada fundraising feasts and tuck in time is the second Saturday of every month.

Once a month Queenstown Chileans, Argentinians, Brazilians and Costa Ricans roll their sleeves up to serve $15 feijoada meals in a mock-up restaurant set up in the downtown church basement area. The delicious black bean and meat (beef or pork) dish comes served with white rice and stir-fried bacon, butter, cassava flour, silver beet and orange.

“Normally we serve between 100 and 150 meals with 10 of us working as a team, cooking, waiting tables and washing up,” says volunteer Eloissa Almeida.

It’s all in aid of a mass fundraising effort by the South Americans in the church to support children in a Nepalese village and in Vanuatu. So far they’ve raised $15,000 for the work.

The idea is to educate the children in the Nepalese village so as to protect them from sex slavery scams. Members of the Queenstown church regularly give of their own personal holiday time to travel to Nepal and Vanuatu to support the work there. Their pastor, Joao Petreceli, also visits the Nepalese village to oversee the work twice a year and ensure the funds are being used properly. “We share the Christian message of hope and love with the children,” says Eloissa.

Meanwhile, the Wakatipu Community Presbyterian Church’s annual Lake Hayes Fair is expected to attract up to 1500 people to the Lake Hayes Showgrounds on Saturday, October 27. Everything from home-baking and preserves, second-hand clothing and furniture to children’s face-painting, entertainment and games will be gracing the big array of stalls and stands. Queenstown’s ‘Baskets of Blessing’ will also be on hand this year.

Lead pastor Ian Guy says while the money will enable continuation of the church’s popular ski season Pasta Cafes, they’re not too focused on how much the event raises. “For us it’s more about blessing the Wakatipu with a really great fun day out that won’t break the bank,” he says.

Tucking their teeth into a good old meat patty may never be the same for diehard carnivores once they’ve tried Queenstown’s newest craze – plant-based meat being served up at the new Lord of The Fries food trailer in Brecon Street.

In June this year, Lord of the Fries launched the revolutionary Beyond Meat plant-based burger patty to New Zealand. Beyond Meat has been backed by the likes of tech titan Bill Gates and Hollywood star and activist, Leonardo DiCaprio (among other investors).

Lord of the Fries, the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest plant-based fast food chain, has arrived in the resort with its 100-percent vegan menu, which is also certified Halala and Kosher.

Created from pea proteins and beetroot extract, the Beyond Burger is a major breakthrough in the global plant-based food revolution offering textural qualities, taste profile and appearance of conventional meat patties.

The brand was only launched in New Zealand 21 months ago and Queenstown is the first store in the South Island and third in the chain.

This walk is a favourite of mine. Being only 25 minutes drive from town it's a reasonably easy walk to get to. It's a three hour loop walk that takes you to Sam Summers hut. The hut has been there since around 1930 and shows a glimpse of life of a gold prospector. After the hut, we walked over 12 Mile creek and starting climbing the ridge to reach an amazing view of Lake Dispute. We decided this was the perfect place to have our picnic. There is so many hidden gems to be found around this area including an amazing waterfall. The tracks lead through mountain beech and manuka with red beech in the gullies. I would highly recommend this walk! Allow 2-4 hours as you find yourself wanting to explore off the beaten track.

TAKE SOME JUNIOR TIME OUT Children are growing up in an increasingly fast-paced world now and it’s just as important for them to learn good mental health and life balance practices as it is for adults, says Remarkables Primary School principal Debbie Dickson.

Recently it’s been a big focus at the school with a special programme also developed for the staff as well as the kids.

Speakers have been brought in from Police Youth Aid, the Queenstown Lakes Family Centre, Sea Shepherd environmental awareness group, the ‘Attitude’ youth programme and an educational psychologist has also addressed teachers and staff about the well-being of children.

Everything from sharing problems with others and coping strategies for anxiety to learning good mindfulness techniques and what to do when stressed have been covered, says Debbie.

Staff have also been doing Pilates and fitness training and learning to stop, breathe and go for a short walk to ‘get off the treadmill’ of life.

Time out.

The children have been learning to develop good listening and communication skills, give of themselves to friends, family and the community, remember the simple things around them that give them joy and savour the moment and to always be open to learning new skills.

“As schools we need to model all of these practices to children so that what we say is what we do,” says Debbie.

“I think everybody gets so busy that we all forget to just stop and do something for ourselves, so we’ve been reminding the teachers of that,” says Debbie. “Fitness can be neglected when you’re so engrossed in what you’re doing and giving to others, so much so that you can come to the end of the bucket. Good life balance and clearing the mind is very important for adults and children.”

The programme’s been based around Five Winning Ways to Improve Well-Being from the NZ Mental Health Foundation. These include connect, give, take notice, keep learning and be active.

Did any of you attend the Wild Hearts wedding fair last month?

My fiancé Ben and I did. It was our first involvement in anything wedding related. Being engaged for five months, that might seem like a while to some of you. I know some of my friends planned their big day as soon as Pinterest was born. Others aren’t so keen on forever commitment sworn and locked with a piece of paper and a gold band. For me I have always dreamed of the 'big day' from a very young age. Tagging along to weddings with my parents I would idolise the bridal princess, the decadent three-tier cake and the gorgeous bouquets, gazing wide-eyed and in awe at the grandiose of it all.

Now it is my turn I am actually quite overwhelmed. It’s not so straightforward when your fiancé is a Kiwi and you’re from Wales and they are pretty much the furthest locations apart. The biggest decision and one which impacts everything is simply, where will we marry?

I’m 90 percent sure it will be Queenstown. After all this is a dream location. With dream venues and even on the most dismal and depressing day, there’s a dramatic atmospheric ambience, and Ben’s family are all relatively close. Although I would absolutely love to get married in my home town and be privileged with the attendance of friends and family, frankly I’m not overly keen on organising a wedding remotely. Being a bit of a control-freak, it’s for my own good and happiness to be involved.

Leaving decisions up to a planner or my poor Mum, would likely end up in a horrifying Bride-zilla situation.

It should be fun!! And it will be. Our solution is to simply have two “weddings”. One main, traditional shebang in Queenstown, with all the bells and whistles, followed by a big home celebration – I really just would like a gathering of all my beloved. That way everyone can come and I can have the best of both worlds, because a bride deserves that right?! SPORT WITH FERG

Great to have been in Wanaka recently for its Festival of Sport day at the Wanaka Recreation Centre and to see some of the sports that have come out of the woodwork since the recreation centre and the pool have been open. Sorry to drag out the old chestnut “build it and they will come”. Also showcasing their sports in Wanaka were two Queenstown clubs that have provided a platform for locals to get involved.

First off the Queenstown Roller Derby Club. What is roller derby? Well, it is full contact, a fast paced team sport played on roller skates. They teach you to skate and to start with you kate every Thursday evening for six weeks in the Learn To Skate Programme and then if you want to skate on training takes place on Wednesday’s and Sunday’s in Queenstown.

They travel every now and then to take on other clubs in the Lower South Island like the West Coast Bombers! Queenstown hasn’t got a team name yet. Any ideas? Talking to the ladies in Wanaka it is obvious that they really enjoy it and maybe this could be something for you? I remember quite a few years ago representation was made to the Queenstown Lakes District Club to allow the sport to use the Queenstown Events Centre but concern then around the stadium floor saw a lukewarm response so it is really positive that they have been able to allay those fears and continue to plant the sport in our community.

The other sport on show in Wanaka was synchronised swimming which has been up and running for a number of years now in Queenstown. You might giggle under your breath but I have always admitted that the women’s teams event at the Summer Olympics is one of the stand out sports. The Russians tend to dominate and what they do is pretty mind boggling.

It always leaves me speechless! I go back to the opening of Alpine Aqua land many years ago and the drive to get a men's team together to perform at the opening. Some well known names, still in town, that made the list – the likes of lawyer Graeme Todd, Happy Snappa owner at the time Dave Laurent, Kim Wilkinson, Grant Stewart, Geoff Bradley and, if my memory is loyal, Paul Van Der Kaag and Jeff Hylton. Just imagine that lot now taking to the water in their braggers!! Maybe now we could have a swim off with a Wanaka team featuring the likes of Leigh Stock, Callum McLeod, Mike OConnor, and Shaun Gilbertson?

All I can think of is the TV show, 'The Last of the Summer Wine'. Jokes aside, it is good to hear that the synchronised swimming club is still above water, pardon the pun, and I would like to acknowledge those involved for creating another sport for others to get involved in. Roller derby and synchronized swimming – give it a go.

This Mediterranean-style vegetable stew is perfect for a super-healthy midweek dinner. Serve with steamed rice, pasta or a big hunk of bread. This meal is completely vegan and dairy free too, although a good grating of cheddar cheese on top is a tasty addition!

What you need: 2 red onions 4 cloves of garlic 1 aubergine 3 courgettes 3 capsicum handful of cherry tomatoes ½ a bunch of fresh basil olive oil a few sprigs of fresh thyme 1 x 400g tin of quality tomatoes 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar ½ a lemon 100ml red wine • Prep your ingredients before you start – peel and cut the onions into wedges, then peel and finely slice the garlic. Trim the aubergines and courgettes, deseed the peppers and chop into 2.5cm chunks. Pick the basil leaves and set aside, then finely slice the stalks.

• Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large pan over a medium heat, add the chopped aubergines, courgettes and peppers and fry for around 5 minutes, or until golden and softened, but not cooked through. Spoon the cooked veg into a large bowl.

• To the pan, add the onion, garlic, basil stalks and thyme leaves with another drizzle of oil, if needed. Fry for 10 to 15 minutes, or until softened and golden.

Return the cooked veg to the pan and stir in the fresh and tinned tomatoes, the balsamic, red wine and a good pinch of sea salt and black pepper.

• Mix well. Cover the pan and simmer over a low heat for 30 to 35 minutes, or until reduced, sticky and sweet.

Tear in the basil leaves, finely grate in the lemon zest and adjust the seasoning, if needed.

The thing I wasn’t prepared for when becoming a parent, was how much of a crappy friend I would suddenly become.

Am I alone in this? Because I see y'all out there all 'Social Butterflying' around while I'm busy staring at the unanswered messages on my phone from a week ago.

I often wonder if my 'friends with history' will be there when I come up for air? Will we be able to pick up where we left off? Or will it have been too long? Will they have had too many births, deaths, and marriages that I wasn’t part of, to rebuild the areas of our friendship that have fallen to the wayside?

The newborn bubble has most certainly burst here, but I still feel swamped with nappies and cooking and cleaning. Let alone trying to fit in work – oh and 'fun activities' that we insist on pressuring ourselves with to create a blissful childhood for our offspring. Then there is a sneaking suspicion I have… that maybe I'm actually not very fun anymore? Sure I can crack a joke, but they are now about sleep deprivation or anecdotes that start with, "My child said…". I even feel a yawn coming on just writing that, so what would my fabulous and/or childfree friends think?!

Now before you throw a pity party in my honour, I'm actually OK. I see some great friends every week. I suppose it's just that we don’t connect on the same levels quite so much anymore. With these friends we get straight down to important business (operations, birthdays, silly things my husband has said this week, ) because we are well aware we have approximately 3.5 minutes before a child is going to burst into tears/ desperately need food/ require an entire outfit change. Hey, we are certainly efficient, but those long in-depth conversations are a thing of the past now.

Will we be able to pick up where we left off? Or will it have been too long?

I yearn to have a lengthy debate about Kim Hill's RNZs guests. I'd love to compare notes on an actual book I'd read. Heck, I'd love to just be there for my friends when they actually need me. I want to get birthday presents there on time. To have the ability to reply to messages and phone calls before it gets embarrassing.

So I ask you… will it happen? When my eldest starts school will I suddenly be better at the friend thing again? Yes?! Because I miss it! I miss the familiarity, the comfortable silences, the no make-up coffee catch ups.

Ten Minute Fish Salad

Often if I am home alone during the day I just nibble on some leftovers or have some toast. But then there are other times when I want to treat myself and eat something delicious, and healthy and green. It can't take too long to prepare though, speed and efficiency are the name of the game!

Enter: Ten Minute Fish Salad.

Ingredients

1. Mix together all your tartare ingredients

3 T Mayo* 1 t Wholegrain Mustard 1 T (or a small gherkin) finely diced 1 t capers finely chopped 1 fillet of fish I used Ling from Harbour Fish 1 wedge of iceberg lettuce 1 lemon wedge 1/2 avocado dukkah** or sesame seeds 4 inch piece of cucumber cut into chunks olive oil to drizzle oil for frying salt & pepper for fish

2. Season your fish on both sides.

3. Put a pan on a medium heat and add oil, once hot add your fish and cook

4. While fish is cooking prepare your plate by dipping your avocado half in dukkah, putting the lemon wedge, iceberg and cucumber on the plate.

5. When the fish has cooked add to the plate and finish with the tartare. Drizzle olive oil over the lettuce and cucumber.

6. When you devour the dish, start by squeezing the fresh lemon over the dish and give yourself a high five for cooking a dish that will nourish your body and soul.

Homemade Suddenly its October and I have started thinking about what homemade presents I will be gifting at Christmas. This year I'll be sharing my favourites with you.

Up first is one for the kids. Play dough has been around for years, and its having a bit of a resurgence. Think amber tones, natural dyes, essential oils. Have fun and play around with it.

Here's the base recipe - tried, tested and recommended by my children's day-care.

1 cup of salt 2 T cream of tartar 5T oil 4 cups boiling water colour of your choice Beat well then add 4-5 cups of flour Knead well To make ombre play dough like I have here, make a white play dough and then split the mix and added various amounts of colouring.

I also added some lavender essential oils.

This recipe makes quite a lot and would be enough for a couple of presents. You could add some wooden utensils for role play or some cutters in complimentary colours too.

YOUNG QUEENSTOWN SKI STAR CLEANS UP WORLD STAGE Queenstown’s very own Alice Robinson has firmly taken hold as the darling of New Zealand skiing, knocking some of the world’s best off the podium at the Winter Games recently.

Within just over a week of her Winter Games NZ Giant Slalom (Australia New Zealand Cup event) win at Coronet Peak in late August, the 16-yearold up and coming ski racer had also netted the 2018 New Zealand Nationals Super-G champion title. She cleaned up both the women’s and junior champion titles at the nationals at Mount Hutt Ski Area, winning all three of her events.

New Zealand skiing officials are watching Alice’s career take off with great glee. “I’m not aware of any other New Zealand women ever achieving such a good FIS ranking at such a young age,” says Snow Sports NZ communications manager Alex Kerr. “She’s definitely an exceptional talent. She’s tracking faster in her career than any other New Zealander ever – on a par with where US two-times Olympic gold medallist Mikaela Shriffin, 23, was at that age,” says Alex. “Alice is definitely very young to be achieving at her level. It’s pretty unprecedented.”

The gutsy young Queenstown racer fended off top World Cup racers at the Audi Quattro Winter Games NZ FIS Australia New Zealand Cup (ANC), scoring six FIS point results, the best possible score in an international race of this calibre.

“It’s super exciting,” says Alice. “It’s been such a great end to the season.

I was pretty stoked.”

Alice only found out she’d qualified for the New Zealand Winter Olympics team about 10 days before the event in South Korea early this year. “That was a pretty intense experience.”

Skiing since she was three, for Alice, skiing at high speed just comes naturally. “I don’t think about it. I just go.”

It’s now back to the hard slog of school, catching up on her study for NCEA exams before heading over to Europe in November to compete in World Cup and European Cup races and prepare for the Junior World Championships in Italy in February next year.

OCTOBER GARDENING October’s a wonderful month for planting.

Shrubs that go in now will make maximum growth over the next few months.

• Fertilise potted plants with Thrive Once A Year Feeder. Repot if the roots are crowded.

• Continue spraying Lebaycid Fruit Fly & Insect Killer every two weeks to protect apples and pears from codling moth.

Place a band of corrugated cardboard around the trunk to trap wandering caterpillars.

• Prune frost-damaged parts of plants now that frosts are finished for the year,.

• Divide and repot congested clumps of cymbidium orchids into fresh Thrive Orchid Potting Mix. • Feed lawns with an organic-based lawn food like Lush Lawn Lifter, or with slow release Lawn Master.

• Prune tired old citrus trees, renewing mulch and feeding with Thrive Citrus Food. Remember, though, if cut back severely, the plant may not fruit again for a couple of seasons.

• Plant all the summer vegies such as beans, sweet corn, tomatoes and cucurbits (zucchinis, melons etc.) now that the soil is warm.

• Plant mandevilla, allamanda and bougainvillea. Climbing plants are at home in warmer climates.

• Plant basil which grows well with tomato plants. It repels pests and promotes healthy growth.

• Water hydrangeas with soluble Thrive Flower & Fruit to encourage larger blooms.
