Pool Party for Brave Lacey Ann More than 100 people took part in a fund raising pool party at Hinckley leisure centre in aid of two-year-old Lacey Ann Taylor from Barwell.

Lacey Ann was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour, a type of kidney cancer when she was one. She had chemotherapy and then surgery to remove the tumour from her kidney, but she also lost the affected organ.

Earlier this year doctors found two tumours on Lacey Ann’s lungs and one on her remaining kidney.

Now Lacey Ann’s family and friends are raising money to send Lacey Ann, her mum and baby sister, Ebony, to Disneyland Paris early next year once the youngster’s treatment is finished.

Emma Hopkins, Hinckley Leisure Centre’s Marketing Manager said: “We coloured the pool a beautiful fuchsia pink, much to the delight of Lacey Ann who came along with her mum, friends and siblings to join in the fun.

She had a fantastic time in the pool with the other children and even met Hansom the Tiger. It was a delight to see. She is a very brave little girl, so happy, just gets on with it despite being at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for treatment every week.”

The pool party raised over £155 for Lacey Ann’s wish which will be presented at a charity event taking place later this week.

Relax with Colour!

Earl Shilton library is running a new Colouring Club, a perfect opportunity to relax colouring in with beautiful materials in an informal setting.

The group runs on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 12.00noon. All materials are provided and the session is free and drop in with everyone welcome.

Battling Brook win Active School trophy Battling Brook Primary School in Hinckley has been awarded the Active School trophy after meeting the challenge to increase the number of children who travel to school by walking, cycling and scooting.

The challenge was set in the summer by the Hinckley and Bosworth School Sport & Physical Activity Network, which invited primary schools in the area to participate in the Active Travel to School project.

Actively travelling to school has many benefits for children: it helps to keep them fit and healthy, can increase concentration levels in class, helps to develop road safety skills and is fun. Reducing the number of cars around the school also will help to make the area quieter, safer and less congested.

So each participating school was asked to keep a record of how many pupils were actively travelling to school on the WOW (Walk Once a Week) wallchart that was displayed in their classroom.

At the end of term schools were asked to return their wallcharts and the data was collated in order to decide which school was most active in Hinckley and Bosworth. Battling Brook won with 88% of pupils from the whole school meeting the challenge.

La Boutique

Needs Y Your our Help Emmaus Leicestershire and Rutland has put a call out for volunteers which are needed to help sort donations of clothes at a Hinckley charity shop.

More people are needed to work through the many donations received at the charity’s La Boutique fundraising store on Castle Street.

La Boutique sells both new and pre-loved clothing and accessories and profits are then used to support its work, offering accommodation and employment to adults who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion.

Companions, as the supported adults are known, live at Elm Lea on Ashby Road and work in either the La Boutique shop or The Emporium, a café and donated homewares store on Stockwell Head.

Shop manager Hayley Tibbetts said: “We have generous local people coming to donate bags of clothes every day but we sometimes struggle to find the time to sort through and price them all.

“We’re really keen to hear from anyone who would be interested in volunteering with us, helping out with this task.

“We know people have busy lives but even a few hours every week or so, on a regular basis, would make a big difference.”

Borough wins gold for 5th year in row

Life-saving equipment brought to the Borough

For the fifth year running, the Borough Council’s Dog Warden Service has received a gold award from the RSPCA for its contribution to improving animal welfare.

Three defibrillators that can be used by the public, as well as members of staff, in the event of a medical emergency are being installed in Borough Council buildings in Hinckley.

The RSPCA’s Community Animal Welfare Footprints (CAWF) award scheme celebrates good practice by rewarding those organisations that go above and beyond statutory service requirements to achieve higher animal welfare standards.

It is the first time the council has bought such devices, which can be life-savers in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), and they are being deployed in the reception areas at The Hub, the Atkins Building and the Jubilee Building on Fleming Road, Harrowbrook Industrial Estate.

Established in 2008, the annual Footprint awards are supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) along with the Local Government Association, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Councillor Kevin Morrell, the Borough Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “Receiving this award is a major achievement for the Dog Warden Service and to receive it for five years running is continued testament to the service provided to the dogs and residents of the Borough and should be congratulated.”

LCFC Legend Night Steve Walsh and Matt Elliot will be attending Leicester City Legends Night at Ashby Road Sports Club in Hinckley.

On 11th November you can spend an evening with two LCFC ex-captains, their experience and stories. Also on the night a Memorabillia raffle and an auction of LCFC goods.

Councillor Amanda Wright, the council’s Health Champion, said: “We believe in being pro-active in providing defibrillators for use by our staff and the general public.

“We obviously hope that these defibrillators are never needed, but statistics unfortunately show that sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of premature death. The quicker it can be treated by defibrillation, the greater the chance of successful resuscitation. Seconds count in these situations and hopefully the new defibrillators will give staff and the public the best possible chance of survival.”

Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) are easy to use, compact, portable and very effective.

They are designed to be used by ordinary members of the public; the machines guide the operator through the process by verbal instructions and visual prompts. They are safe and will not allow a shock to be given unless the heart’s rhythm requires it.

AEDs are being installed in many busy places, workplaces, or other areas where the public have access. The intention is to use the machines to restart the heart as soon as possible.

This strategy of placing AEDs in locations where they are used by lay persons near the arrest is known as public access defibrillation (PAD).

Stress and tension

Some people are surprised when they hear of the overlap between my massage therapy work and Ann’s stress management work and yet each of us meets clients who can benefit from the other’s approach.

The reason for this overlap is the body’s response to stress. The stress response prepares your body for fighting or running away – it is a survival response evolved to keep us alive in a world of predators. However, in today’s world, our stresses tend not to be things that we can either fight or run away from.

Today, most people’s stress occurs over a much longer timescale: long term worries about money, work, relationships and suchlike. Therefore, that readiness for fighting or running away is maintained for days and weeks rather than for minutes.

As a result, the tensing of the muscles in preparation of the fight or the run is held for hours, days, even weeks. Just imagine – if someone asked you to hold any position for several hours, you’d probably think they were mad. Yet, when we’re stressed we unconsciously raise our shoulders and tense our abdominal muscles all the time.

It’s not surprising then that stress can result in headaches resulting from muscle tension in the back of the neck, or tired and tense stomach muscles. With long-term stress these problems need massage therapy to release the knots that have developed.

At the same time, unless the person learns how to cope with the stress in their lives, these muscle problems (along with other stress-related problems) will recur.

By correcting the muscle problems which arise from stress and building emotional resilience to stress a person can become both physically and mentally healthier.

Have your say on environmental issues People in Hinckley & Bosworth are being invited to have their say on a suggested update to the Borough Council’s environmental and enforcement policy and procedures.

The council wants to hear people’s views on what is being done to keep neighbourhoods clean in the light of recent changes to legislation.

For example, the policy now includes a reference to Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO), which are new measures to deal with activities carried out in a public space that have a detrimental effect on the local community’s quality

Up Close & Personal What’s that old saying: “Manners maketh the man”?

As Susie B nearly always beats me at table tennis I need to grasp every opportunity to gain an advantage. So when she offered me the chance to replay a point on our recent holiday in Crete, I grasped it with both hands.

But what led up to that scenario? In my opinion, an ageing Italian’s total and utter disregard for anyone or anything other than himself, that’s what. What, other than sheer ignorance, leads this 70+ year-old Italian making a beeline for the outdoor bar by taking a shortcut between me and the table tennis table? Not only during a game, but in the middle of a friggin’ point.

Picture the scene: my style of play leads me to hit defensive shots from about six feet behind the table, then rush in to smash winners from close range. So, what the hell? I’m moving in for the kill when he wanders into my path, and is squarely between me and the table when my forehand smash would undoubtedly take Susie B out.

And he’s not even apologetic…just meandering on his way with barely a grunt. Unfortunately he isn’t alone in his thoughtlessness. So many others are equally devoid of basic manners. My Mum and Dad brought me up to think of others and to be courteous in my everyday activities.

For example, I’ll never block a pavement, or aisle in a shop. I’ll never suddenly stop while walking anywhere without looking behind me first. I’ll never talk to anyone without a “please” or “thank you.” And I’ll never do or say anything to deliberately hurt, offend or upset anyone. Basically, I always treat other people exactly how I’d like them to treat me. I’m sure you feel the same (in fact, I can see you nodding your head right now) – but do you think we’re in the minority? I should say we definitely are.

People say it’s the just the way of the world now, and people are what the world has made them. Yes, maybe so. But the world is what people have made IT.

The Chapel is also running three months, which started at the beginning of October, of fundraising events to donate to the worthwhile Community Heartbeat Trust.

These include Coffee Mornings on Saturdays 22nd October, 26th November and 17th December running from 10am to 12noon with Tours of the Historic Chapel also available on these days.

1.Preheat oven to 350° F/Gas Mark 4. Line a 12-cup standard muffin tin with paper liners and set aside.

2.In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.
