TOLÙ ADẸKỌ

DESIGN AS STORYTELLING: A CONVERSATION WITH TOLÙ ADẸKỌ

Great design goes beyond aesthetics it tells a story and creates lasting impressions. At Adẹkó & Co, an independent, multi-disciplinary studio, storytelling is at the heart of every project, blending quality, longevity, and a people-first approach

In this exclusive interview, we sit down with the creative mind behind the studio to explore their inspirations, design philosophy, and how they craft spaces that feel as meaningful as they are beautiful

What inspired you to pursue a career in interor design, and what was your first big design project?

Growing up in Ijebu Ode, Nigeria, I was immersed in a world of textiles, fashion, and craftsmanship. My father, a fashion designer and stylist, and my mother, an entrepreneur, nurtured my appreciation for creativity from an early age I’ve always been fascinated with design and how it shapes the way we live My first encounter with this fascination was changing rooms I was captivated by how a room's transformation could completely change someone’s experience of a space It sparked a deep curiosity in me to explore the possibilities of design

Initially, I considered pursuing fine art, but I chose to study BA Interior Design at Bournemouth University because it still felt like an art form I thought it would be like being a curatorcombining and layering elements to create something cohesive and meaningful A defining moment in my journey was being mentored by Sir Terence Conran, founder of the Design Museum and the Conran Shop, through a two-year furniture design program at school That experience was transformative, deepening my understanding of the balance between function and aesthetics and shaping the way I approach design today

My first major project was contributing to the design of Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Grill restaurant While my role was small, it was incredibly rewarding to see an idea come to life Being part of such a high-profile project so early on was a significant milestone in my career

How has your design philosophy evolved since you started in the field?

Over the years, my philosophy has shifted from focusing solely on my personal design style to understanding the unique requirements of each space and its users I prefer not to have a ‘house style' but rather a standard of quality in every project A significant aspect of my approach is appreciating how individual pieces - furniture, lighting, and textures bring a space to life These elements may seem insignificant, but they have a profound impact on how people interact with and experience a space

I’ve also been deeply inspired by early 20th-century design, particularly from the 1920s to the 1940s European and French designers of that era created furniture and interiors with timeless elegance, which I often reference in my work today

Photography: WOW!house by Darren Chung

When starting a new project, what’s the first step you take to understand a client’s vision and lifestyle?

The first step for me is to really understand the space itself I often begin with hand sketches mapping out the essence of the environment Then, my team and I create vignettes, isometrics, or walkthroughs to refine our vision

I pay close attention to natural light, flow, and architectural features By analysing these details, I can identify what’s missing, what needs enhancement, and how to best align the design with the client’s vision It’s about more than just aesthetics - it’s about crafting an environment that feels purposeful, seamless, and truly reflective of the people who will inhabit it

Can you walk us through your creative process, from the initial concept to the final reveal?

My creative process always begins with narrative and storytelling Once I understand the space, the next challenge is uncovering a unique story to guide the design

Sometimes, these stories are hidden in history or the site itself, waiting to be rediscovered Other times, they require deep research and imagination. We take a journalistic approach to understanding the project, starting with a broad perspective and narrowing it down to the finer details

This research-driven method allows us to create multi-layered spaces, blending different visual references, periods, and styles The result is a cohesive design that is rich in texture, architecture, and narrative depth

Photography: WOW!house by Darren Chung

Where do you draw inspiration for your designs architecture, travel, art, or something unexpected?

My inspiration comes from a blend of sourceshistorical architecture, design periods, gallery visits, and even unexpected moments in everyday life Having worked in interior design for 17 years, each project has been a learning experience, shaping my understanding of the design journey and refining my approach

Growing up in Nigeria and later moving to London in 1995 exposed me to a rich cultural contrast that continues to influence my work Art plays a significant role in my design philosophy, and I frequently visit galleries and museums to explore new perspectives

I often find inspiration in unexpected places - a vintage textile, a piece of historic furniture, or the ambience of a particular city My goal is always to translate these inspirations into designs that feel both fresh and timeless

Finally, do you have any exciting projects that you are currently working on that you can share with us?

We’re currently working on a variety of exciting projects, including a range of high-profile luxury hotel designs and a historic residential development property in central London Each project offers a unique opportunity to tell a different story, and our work spans across both hospitality and luxury residential projects

A SPOTLIGHT

ON THE DESIGNS OF ONE OF LONDON’S BOLDEST RESTAURANTS

Architect India Mahdavi and renowned British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare make a notable impact on sketch’s already iconic Gallery restaurant on Conduit Street Mahdavi first transformed the Gallery in 2014, creating a recognisable pastel pink design destination adorned with 245 artworks by David Shrigley

Now, with the removal of the pink hues and rose gold accents, the restaurant showcases a warm colour palette of golden and copper tones Shonibare has contributed 14 new site-specific artworks, forming an installation called ‘Modern Magic ’ This series honours African culture and its legacy

Transforming an already recognisable space may seem challenging, but sketch continues to evolve It remains a venue that hosts rotating art and installations while becoming a work of art itself. The destination is renowned for embracing new directions, and we commend the restaurant for consistently advancing and delighting guests with fresh surprises on every visit

LET’S TALK - LOUISA TRATALOS, FOUNDER OF THE COLOURS OF ARLEY

Louisa Tratalos, founder of the Colours of Arley, has created a stunning collection of 'Bespoke stripes for distinctive spaces' A photographer with a love of storytelling and a passion for creating unique, meaningful objects.

Her company was born during lockdown when Louisa rehomed Patch, a scruffy terrier, and set out to find the perfect stripe to make him a throne worthy of his new Hackney life. The search provided more challenges than expected, sparking the idea for a brand dedicated to help others bring their personal stories to life through bespoke stripes

Please briefly introduce yourself and what you create.

I’m the founder of Colours of Arley, where we craft bespoke fabric and wallpaper stripes for residential and commercial spaces worldwide At the heart of my work is storytelling, capturing the essence of the people and places we send stripes to Whether it’s a home in a converted butcher’s shop in the Catskill Mountains or a restaurant in the Sicilian hills, every stripe tells a unique story

What new products/collections/business news do you have for 2025?

We’re launching another of our sell-out vintage drops next month, alongside our first-ever pop-up in New York this spring And there’s an exciting collaboration we've been working on for a while, but I can’t spill the details just yet! Keep an eye on our socials to be the first to hear about it

What has been your biggest or most enduring inspiration in your creative career?

Photography has always been my greatest influence Before founding Colours of Arley, I worked as a photographer, and I remain endlessly inspired by seeing the world as a series of still images My favourite project to date was photographing women who live alone How each of their houses reflected their personal journey so far Now I encourage people to take inspiration for their stripes from around them, whether it's a memory of a holiday, or their favourite dish My partner runs a rare and out-of-print photography bookshop right next to our studio, so we’re constantly inspired by some of the best photography greats!

Can you tell us about a life-changing

travel experience?

I took the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing not long before lockdown, an amazing journey through shifting time zones, with Mongolia’s wild horses running alongside, watching landscapes, cultures, and cuisines evolve from Russia to China When travel came to a halt, my partner and I rehomed Patch, our terrier (who inspired my very first stripe), converted a Transit van, and set off for six months around the UK and Europe We taught him to swim in Lake Annecy and took him to a beach bar in Ibiza, and it turns out, he loved travelling as much as we do

What travel recommendations can you share with our readers for 2025?

You don’t need to fly to have an unforgettable adventure I once took the train through Scandinavia, and it's magical to watch a place unfold, and witness the nuances of everyday life, as you pass through different regions. The same goes for travelling in a van, the unexpected, unplanned stops are always the best part.

What’s your favourite cocktail bar, cocktail, or non-alcoholic drinks venue?

I’m more of a pub person than a cocktail bar girl I don’t drink much these days, but when I fancy a good catch-up with a friend, it’s got to be The Royal Oak, The Spurstowe, The Marksman, or my local in Forest Gate, The Holly Tree, which has three non-alcoholic pints on tap, a rare and very welcome offering!

What would you love to see more of in the design world?

Pieces chosen for a lifetime That’s why we encourage people to select their bespoke stripes based on something personal, something with meaning When a piece holds sentimental value, it transcends trends and fleeting fashions

What would you like to see less of in the design world?

Less waste, fewer trends Thoughtful, intentional design over disposable aesthetics Spaces should reflect the person who inhabits it, not what's hot right now

SALUTE

As the winter chill sets in, there’s something about a drink that transports you to sunnier days For me, it’s Ting a refreshing, citrusy beverage that brings the warmth of the Caribbean right into my glass While it’s often the perfect mixer for a Rum & Ting, it’s also my go-to for evoking memories of lazy days on the beach, paired with any aged rum I have on hand In this edition of Salute, we’re sharing some of our favourite drinks that not only delight the senses but also stir memories and emotions Cheers!

In the winter months, I enjoy a drink that reminds me of warmer times Ting While it’s often a mixer in a Rum & Ting, it's also the essential ingredient that evokes memories of Caribbean beaches, paired with any aged rum I have on hand

Made with Jamaican grapefruit and described as "a lightly sparkling, citrusy cocktail chameleon," I recommend grabbing a can next time you’re at Tesco, the only UK supermarket that carries Ting, for a taste of Jamaica

For a good Jamaican rum to pair with Ting, I suggest Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum, available for £26 50 at supermarkets

SCHMUCK HITS NYC: A DESIGNFORWARD BAR WITH A KILLER COCKTAIL LINEUP

The founders of Barcelona’s acclaimed five-star dive bar, Two Schmucks once a regular in The World’s 50 Best Bars have embarked on a bold new venture in Manhattan’s East Village. After a turbulent chapter that saw a mass staff departure due to professional differences among the partners, they set sail for the U S , channelling their energy into an entirely new concept

Their latest project, a 100-seater “European-style” bar, is a testament to both creative ambition and resilience Left high and dry by their contractors, the team turned to YouTube tutorials and ChatGPT to complete the interior themselves The result? A space that exudes laid-back sophistication, blending terrazzo, concrete, and cherrywood with vintage furnishings, leather chairs, and an eclectic mix of artwork and artefacts The effortlessly cool, slouchy aesthetic makes it as much a destination for design lovers as it is for cocktail connoisseurs

Aljaff told The Post, “The cool thing about when you design it yourself and conceptualize it, then make it into a physical thing, is when it’s full of people and they’re enjoying it It’s like making an amazing cocktail times a million ”

And speaking of cocktails, Schmuck’s drinks menu is nothing short of impressive With 22 expertly crafted options 12 served in the main lounge and 10 in an intimate side space the menu reflects the team’s deeprooted culinary approach to mixology. Standouts include the Fika, a clever twist on the Swedish tradition of coffee and cinnamon buns, reimagined with Bacardi 8 and Mr Black coffee liqueur

To complement the drinks, the bar offers a selection of bites inspired by Persian and Western European flavours, developed in collaboration with Berlin pop-up chef Arash Ghassemi Dishes like the white bean cacio e pepe exemplify this fusion of influences.

As Aljaff puts it, “The beauty of the Schmuck brand is that it’s ever-evolving and truly cannot be contained to one thought, idea, drink, or mood but the constant is mine and Juliette’s lives and where we are at a certain point in time ”

SWAY CERAMICS

SCULPTING ELEGANCE: A CONVERSATION WITH DIMITRIS PAPAILIAS OF SWAY CERAMICS

We are thrilled to introduce our latest interview with Dimitris Papailias, the talented ceramicist behind Sway Ceramics Originally from Greece, Dimitris brings a deep connection to craftsmanship and materiality, creating pieces that balance form, texture, and movement In this conversation, we explore his journey into ceramics, the inspirations behind his work, and the meticulous process that shapes each unique creation

What first drew you to ceramics, and how did you discover your passion for working with clay?

Ceramics came into my life serendipitously when I was looking for a different medium to work with my hands I had no expectations at the time, and that’s when the magic happened I enrolled on an 8 week wheel-throwing course that granted me access to a ceramics studio as a member, and there I started hand building and exploring the possibilities that clay had to offer

Can you tell us about a moment or project early in your career that solidified your desire to pursue ceramics as a craft?

There was a pivotal moment in my life when I helped a good friend of mine set up a photography studio in East London from ground zero The entire experience had deeply inspired me to pursue ceramics as a craft and professional career There is something soulful in witnessing clay taking shape - from dirt to something precious which will stand the test of time

How do you approach designing a new piece—do you start with a clear vision, or does it evolve organically during the process?

Every time I start a new piece, I mostly have a clear vision of the final outcome at least in terms of form

As I progress the pieces, there’s always a moment where I venture on a different path completely. New forms are felt I also tend to keep half-finished pots in the studio so I can take time to study them until I feel inspired to do the final glazing

My work is based on textures that I create by layering different glazes and slips However, you can't say that everything is spontaneous it's an experiment that evolves

Other times, my work is more focused on form I may start with a sketch and work slowly because I know exactly what I am aiming for For more sculptural pieces, I normally use a single type of clay and leave the exterior raw and unglazed to draw emphasis to the form

What role does experimentation play in your work, and have you ever had a “happy accident” that turned into something beautiful?

The whole journey is a happy accident

I am always keen to explore alternative methods of firing, such as wood, gas and raku firing The outcome is always spontaneous, unexpected and mostly beautiful

One could never be bored experimenting with clay bodies and glazes Changing one ingredient in your glaze recipe could lead you to a whole different world

What does working with clay mean to you personally, and how does the material itself influence your creative expression?

The versatility of clay paves way for an endless exploration of the unknown, a space where creative vision resides There is an infinite possibility when it comes to working with clay

Do you have a favourite type of clay or glaze you work with, and why is it significant to your process?

I am drawn to groggy clay, a body which is rich in textures In terms of glazing, the process tends to be slow and intentional The final aesthetics is a combination of layered slips and reactive glazes.

Where do you find inspiration for your work—nature, culture, people, or something entirely different?

I believe that the culture of the place where you grew up and everything you have experienced so far will be reflected in everything you do in the future, especially when you create art that comes from you

It is important to understand your roots, embrace them and let them be involved

Are there any ceramicists, artists, or movements that have shaped your style or philosophy?

Alana Wilson, Nancy Fuller and Akiko Herai I’m inspired by their delicate works, the slow-making processes, and the connection to their roots and heritage
