Well, you’re about to learn a whole lot more about your timber flooring choices. Yes, there is a whole more to wooden floorboards than just different the different types of wood available! So let’s discuss just what Scotia is, shall we?

So just what is Scotia? Have a look (or just a think) about the floorboards in a house where they meet the wall. At the wall, you will have the skirting boards going around the length of the room. There are two different ways of affixing the skirting boards. With the first way, you affix your skirting before you lay your floorboards, so that it will end up with the bottom of it below the level of your floorboards. With the second way, you add your skirting after you’ve laid your floors, so that the bottom of the skirting is in fact sitting on top of the floorboards.

When do we need Scotia? Now, with this first case of the skirting, due to the nature of timber flooring, when your timber floorboards are laid down to butt up against the skirting boards, you will require a small gap. This little gap is necessary to account for the swelling of the wood - which can happen in many circumstances, especially when there is moisture in the air. You use Scotia to effectively cover up this small gap between the flooring and the skirting, which will help to create an extra barrier between the underneath of your house and the top of the floors – which can be a moderately effective measure to discourage against insects crawling in.
