LETTER FROM THE CEO

2023 IMPACT REPORT

Shortly after I joined the Fleet Science Center, I was walking through the galleries and came across a bearded man in a Grateful Dead t-shirt reading a text panel on an exhibit. His daughter, no more than 10 years old, ran up to him and began breathlessly and insistently pulling at his hand. She led him across the gallery to a series of plastic pipes of different lengths.

She handed him a rubber mallet and instructed him to hit the opening of one of the pipes. “Do you hear how that sounds?” she asked, “Now hit this one and listen.”

He obliged and she asked, “Hear how it’s different, Daddy? Do you know why?” Then she launched into an animated explanation. While it was wonderful that she had learned something about the way that sound works, more important was how excited she was about her discovery. Her enthusiastic and passionate explanation of her new insight spoke volumes about her potential future.

This young girl had a transformational moment—a moment when suddenly a door opens, a pathway becomes apparent and a new future is possible. In these moments, kids like her get a glimpse of the doctor, the architect, the scientist they could one day become.

The Fleet sees transformational moments and the amazed excitement and joy they inspire every day. We recognize these moments as the essential spark, the first steps toward a STEM future.

With the support and partnership of our community— families, educators, volunteers, donors and public and private organizations—the Fleet Science Center works to create a lifetime of inspirational moments for San Diegans of all ages across the county, both in Balboa Park and where they live, work and play.

I am excited to share with you some of those moments from the past year to illustrate the lasting impact of the Fleet’s work and show gratitude to all of you who support the Fleet Science Center’s mission to realize a San Diego where everyone is connected to the power of science.

Through dialogues that strengthen relationships with neighborhoods, the Fleet Science Center works with communities to identify how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) can support their goals and aspirations. For 10 years the Fleet has focused efforts on six neighborhoods—San Ysidro, National City, the communities of Southeastern San Diego, Barrio Logan, Clairemont and Escondido.

We build mutual respect and trust while establishing relationships with community members, leaders, and organizations, prioritizing each neighborhood’s unique values and assets. Together with community partners, we co-create programs, projects and initiatives that leverage STEM learning.

As a result, in the past year the Fleet and its community partners have added three unique new neighborhood initiatives.

NEW INITIATIVES

Full STEAM Ahead / Adelante STEAM in National City Supported by a grant from the Department of Navy’s STEM Education and Workforce Program, the Fleet and its partners* in National City launched Full STEAM Ahead/Adelante STEAM to advance science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) learning as well as diversity, equity and inclusion practices.

Connecting in-school programs to out-ofschool and after-school activities tied to parent workshops and family engagement, Full STEAM Ahead/Adelante STEAM serves three groups simultaneously—families, students, and educators to leverage community expertise and increase program impact. This inaugural year, the program served 1,562 children and adults with two parent workshops, 25 educator Internships and 30 student workshops.

NEW INITIATIVES

San Ysidro STEM Fair In 2022, the Fleet was privileged to help bring to life the first San Ysidro STEM Fair, which exceeded expectations. In 2023, we were excited to join with our partners again to cocreate a larger event at Smythe Elementary School, which welcomed 1,400 children and adults, more than four times the previous year’s attendance.

Among the more than 30 exhibitors at the 2023 San Ysidro STEM Fair were several locally created booths highlighting existing STEM programming, including six San Ysidro School District Sci Phy Demonstrations of Learning and the San Ysidro High School Cougarbots Robotics Team.

NEW INITIATIVES

Fleet on the Go in Neighborhood Libraries This year the Fleet has partnered with the San Diego Public Library system to launch Fleet on the Go. This new effort brings a variety of Fleet exhibits and interactives to library branches across San Diego. Since piloting at the Valencia Park/Malcolm X Library, Fleet exhibits have visited 10 neighborhood libraries with hands-on interactives and the exhibition New Science. In addition, before the end of the 2023 calendar year, Fleet on the Go is scheduled to be in Rancho Peñasquitos Library and to return to the Valencia Park/Malcolm X Library.

For the launch of New Science at the Central Library, the Fleet led hands-on STEM activities during the library’s Rainbow Revolution community resource fair and hosted a panel discussion on LGBTQ+ Perspectives in STEM, featuring queer intersectional scientists from the New Science exhibition.

Supporting Schools During the past year our community’s strained education system continued to feel the effects of pandemic-era disruptions.

The Fleet is supporting students and teachers in their recovery from this educational setback by providing programs that improve students’ cognitive skills, build new understanding and increase science knowledge. Additionally, classroom teachers use these programs to improve motivation and interest in science.

Family Science Nights

Held at schools, Family Science Nights bring together children, parents and teachers to experience hands-on standards-based science investigations that are both informative and enjoyable. Bilingual materials ensure that Spanish speakers can participate.

SUPPORTING SCHOOLS

Lemon Grove Thriving Students Community of Practice This past spring the Fleet Science Center, in partnership with the Lemon Grove School District, Arts Education Connection San Diego, RoboThink Chula Vista, and transcenDANCE launched the Lemon Grove Thriving Students Community of Practice (CoP).

Supported by the San Diego Foundation and the County Office of Education, the initiative provided for 10 expanded learning after-school workshop programs for 150 students in the Lemon Grove School District.

In addition to connecting students with enriching after-school programs, the CoP supports Lemon Grove teachers and expanded learning instructors, preparing them to actively engage students in connected learning experiences across the school day.

The program also works to streamline communication processes to ensure families receive clear, consistent and timely information regarding expanded learning opportunities. Learning from this pilot initiative will inform the district’s long-term expanded learning strategy and serve as a foundation for scaling collaboration across Lemon Grove’s expanded learning ecosystem.

In School Workshops and Assemblies School workshops for grades TK-8 offer inquiry-based, hands-on investigations on a wide variety of topics and can be customized at an educator’s request. The Fleet’s Don’t Try This at Home live stage shows use large demonstrations to engage students and build science interest among students.

The real impact of the Fleet Science Center is found in the stories of those whose lives we have touched, whose transformational moment made them reach for the stars.

Katya Echazarreta’ s experience at the Fleet in fifth grade “changed the course of my life.”

While on a school field trip to the Fleet, Katya participated in a program that simulated a mission to Mars.

Katya promised herself that one day she would journey to space. On June 4, 2022, she became the first Mexican-born woman to travel to space. All of us at the Fleet are thrilled to see Katya achieve her dreams and humbled to hear her gratitude for the Fleet Science Center.

That is when I realized that these careers existed for something I was so passionate about. I went to my mom, and I said to her, ‘You will not believe what I just saw! There are jobs out there where you can go to space, you can go to another planet, you can go to space stations, you can work on technology that is going to bring people outside of Earth, and on top of that?

They’re going to pay you money for that!”

Once an active Fleet volunteer, Katya now visits to share her story with the next generation.

Building STEM Identity

Young Women in STEM and Youth Development Programs

When a student has a transformational moment of inspiration, it is unlikely to make a difference unless she is supported.

Building STEM identity means building her understanding and belief that science is for her and something she does.

As a cultural organization, the Fleet Science Center is in a unique position to address this challenge and support narratives that are inclusive of the wide diversity of people and cultures of San Diego.

Societal narratives, the stories we tell about science, affect STEM identity. They define our understanding of what science is, who it is for and who is allowed to participate.

Research demonstrates that these deepseated stories work to keep the power of science exclusive and limit innovation.

By supporting and celebrating the STEM identities of all San Diegans we can foster new voices, ideas and insights.

YOUNG WOMEN IN STEM

Just one example of the Fleet’s work toward inclusion is its commitment to engaging young women and female-identifying people in STEM so they can pursue STEM careers. Research has shown that while girls have a high interest in STEM during their early years, their interest precipitously declines once they hit fifth grade, and this decline continues through high school. To address this drop-off, the Fleet offers a suite of programs designed to cultivate STEM identity in girls during this critical period.

SciTech

SciTech is an interactive after-school program for girls in grades 4–6, providing more than 40 hours of project-based STEM learning over the course of a year. The program is in high demand with 50 schools applying to be one of five SciTech schools for 2022–23 school year. In response, the Fleet is planning to double the number of program sites in the 2023–24 school year.

SciTech culminates in the schools coming together at the Fleet Science Center for the annual Tech Challenge. In 2023, the SciTech girls worked in teams to design, build and test an

These workshops focus on fields such as biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, physics and robotics. YOUNG WOMEN IN STEM

Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering (BE WiSE) For more than 20 years, BE WiSE has engaged young women to build STEM identity, offering STEM learning experiences in collaboration with the region’s research, industry and academic institutions.

This spring the Fleet welcomed its newest class of seventh and eighth grade girls who will be a part of the BE WiSE program until they graduate from high school. Many alums of the program stay involved as volunteers and mentors.

In 2022-23, the girls met with women scientists and engineers at 36 companies/organizations that hosted BE WiSE workshops. The girls also engaged with many others at BE WiSE orientation events.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Research shows that hands-on, free-choice experiences play an important role in a child’s STEM development. From the rock hunting of the amateur geologist to the tide pool exploration of the future naturalist, these out-of-classroom experiences are critical to the development of children’s long-term relationship with and success in STEM. The Fleet Science Center looks to expand every child’s ability to connect with STEM through programs—clubs, camps, scouting badge workshops, career fairs—that reach across age, time and space.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Young Scientists In a landmark 2018 study, researchers at Harvard, MIT and the London School of Economics showed the striking impact that early exposure to science and invention has on children’s future opportunities. In fact, the researchers estimated that by increasing early exposure, the United States stands to quadruple the amount of innovation in our country.

Recognizing this need, the Fleet offers Young Scientists to help little ones discover a passion for science and ignite a desire to explore the world around them. Parents and their 3 to 5-year-old children engage in a series of four Saturday morning sessions that provide developmentally appropriate, informal learning experiences that support and enhance exploration, create excitement and facilitate scientific discoveries. The program is bilingual with sessions offered in both English and Spanish.

Spring STEAM Resource and Career Fair In April 2023, the Fleet collaborated with Black San Diego, Empowering our Community to host the Spring STEAM Resource and Career Fair. Black San Diego is a local non-profit which brings together Black-owned businesses to increase sustainability and promote growth.

With more than 42 exhibitors and STEAM education providers filling the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park, the event connected hundreds of families from Southeastern San Diego to resources, local experts and even astronauts.

The event also included special presentations by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and City Council President Pro Tem Monica Montgomery Steppe.

The Fleet’s STEM Camps always have been a popular choice for kids and parents looking to find a fun and meaningful way to spend a school holiday. This past summer, our camps’ popularity reached a new high with every one of our Balboa Park site camps sold-out and every available room in the building full.

Increased demand over the last few years has prompted the Fleet to offer off-site camps, as well. This past year, the Fleet offered camp experiences during the summer, fall, winter and spring break periods at Balboa Park and four sites across San Diego County.

A Place of Inspiration,

On March 10, 1973, the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater and Science Center opened the world’s first tilted dome planetarium and the first giant dome theater. This model, of a science center and large format theater coupled together, became the standard for hundreds of new facilities moving forward.

Fifty years later we have reached over 26,000,000 people and the Fleet Science Center’s flagship experience in Balboa Park has become a place of inspiration and connection, where scientists and engineers connect with the public and where families build community around science.

The Sky Tonight Our monthly planetarium show drew more than 3,600 visitors to the Fleet Science Center with its insights into the night sky from resident astronomer Lisa Will, Ph.D. A special morning addition was also offered that used the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater to present and explore the latest images from the James Webb Space Telescope across our 76-foot diameter domed screen.

Accessibility Mornings On the third Saturday of every month, the Fleet hosts visitors who benefit from lowsensory experiences. The program includes free admission for one guest and one chaperone, quieted exhibit galleries and a documentary screening with house lights on and a lower soundtrack volume. The Fleet also offers theater devices for the hearing-impaired.

The National Foundation for Autism Research (NFAR) held a family activity day at the Fleet Science Center.

NFAR is partnering with the Fleet to grow the Accessibility Mornings program in 2024-2025.

Science Demonstrations As the Fleet revitalized our volunteer program in January of 2023, volunteers began inspiring visitors with science demonstrations in our galleries. In just 6 months, volunteers were present in our galleries and doing demonstrations for 101 days.

DOCUMENTARY Serengeti is home to most of Africa’s iconic animals and hosts one of the world’s greatest natural events — the annual wildebeest migration.

The STEM Professional Next Door,

Connecting Scientists and the Community

With more than 20% of the jobs in our community based in STEM disciplines, San Diego has a remarkable population of scientists and engineers. Unfortunately, this resource is inaccessible to many San Diegans.

To leverage this vast reserve of STEM experts, the Fleet has developed a portfolio of initiatives to help scientists connect to the community and the community to connect to scientists. Here are some of these Fleet programs from this past year.

San Diego STEM Ecosystem The Fleet serves as the facilitator and Central Project Office for the San Diego STEM Ecosystem, a collaboration among 250 local nonprofit, businesses, schools and community groups focused on building a stronger STEM learning system for all San Diego County.

In 2022-2023 the STEM Ecosystem partners cocreated and collaborated on more than 10 joint projects.

The Fleet’s unique take on connecting scientists to the public turns 10 years old in 2024. This past year, the program continued to rebuild from its pandemic hiatus by hosting events across San Diego County.
