The celebration in Freehold, New Jersey on June 27, 1903, was attended by New Jersey Governor Franklin Murphy and Indiana Senator Charles W. Fairbanks. Letters were read from President Theodore Roosevelt and former president Grover Cleveland. When Theodore Roosevelt ascended to the presidency upon the death of William McKinley, the Constitution provided no mechanism to appoint a new vice president, leaving the seat open during Roosevelt's first term. Senator Fairbanks (1852-1918) was selected as his Vice President for the 1904 election, a nod to conservative factions of the Republican Party Roosevelt and Fairbanks were not close, with Fairbanks actively working against his Square Deal agenda.

Presidential assassin Charles Guiteau had good reason to fear being poisoned while in jail. Three months prior to this letter, a prison guard named William Mason fired at Guiteau, but missed. The recipient of this letter, George Scoville, was Guiteau's brotherin-law and lead defense attorney. Guiteau, also an attorney, believed he could defend himself, but the judge disagreed and appointed council. Includes the bookplate of Chicago publisher Donald S. Friede, designed and illustrated by Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias

Hemingway, Ernest $175,000.00

New owner and editor of the Three Mountain Press Billy Bird wrote to Hemingway that "I am going to pull something really fancy with your book," which yielded the detailed copy seen here. To align with Hemingway's experimental writing, the covers were decorated with newspaper headlines and the title was written in lower case letters. The "lack of capital letters" was a challenge for Hemingway, who wrote "I thought he [Bird] could go ahead and be a damn fool in his own way if it pleased him. So long as he did not fool with the text." (Cohen 48-50) The Press originally set out to make 300 copies, but a printing error with the frontispiece reduced the total to 170, with faulty copies sent to reviewers (Baker 18) Multiple elements were changed for the 1925 New York publication, including the capitalization of the title and the contents of the volume itself.

Hemingway, Ernest in our time

Inscribed on the front endpaper: "To Lewy with love from the Author. Paris, March, 1924."

Lewis "Lewy" Clarahan was a close childhood friend of Ernest "Ernie" Hemingway. The two attended high school together in Oak Park, Illinois and explored Northern Michigan on holidays. They bonded over their love of hunting, which, on one occasion, almost cost Clarahan his life when Hemingway accidentally discharged his shotgun next to Clarahan's head. They often traveled to the Hemingway's family cottage (Windemere) on Walloon Lake, to spend the summer months fishing and hunting. Clarahan had the unique distinction of reading one of Hemingway's first stories, when "...he pulled the last sheet out of his typewriter and read the story he'd written. He was very sure he'd written a real good story. That might have been his very first." (The Pantagraph, June 1992)

After World War I, the two friends grew apart, with Clarahan believing that Hemingway "was always thinking of what to do next, and where the excitement was. That was his way " While Hemingway often featured people from his youth in his novels in unflattering ways, he never featured Clarahan, "which may have been his way of showing loyalty to his boyhood friend." (Pantagraph, 1992) Clarahan died in 1994 at the age of 96.

African-American Combat Nurses and Soldiers [World War II]

Series of thirteen photographs from World War II featuring photos of the first contingent of Black female combat nurses to arrive in the Southwest Pacific and prize fighter Toikey Thompson.

US Signal Corps, [c 1940s] First Edition Thus. Two silver gelatin photographs measuring 8"x10", one 5"x7", one 4"x6", and nine 3.5"x5"or smaller. All in very good to good condition, with a touch of wear along edges and some faint toning. One small image with loss to right edge, a thin crease, and tape repairs. A unique set, some with stamped dates and typed captions written by U.S. press, some with handwritten notes and signatures

Although the demand for nurses in World War II was consistently high, segregation and Jim Crow laws kept qualified African American nurses from serving. A quota was set in 1941 to enlist fifty-six Black nurses who were only permitted to aid German prisoners of war, or men in segregated spaces. That number remained in place until July 1944. The Allies' need for medical aid in the final year of the war did not change acceptance into service. By mid-1945, just 0.8% of the Army Nurse Corps were African American, out of almost 60,000.
