MANILA -- President

Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday reported a fruitful outcome of his participation in the 43rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he advanced the country’s interest in the regional gathering.

In a press statement, the President said he participated in 12 Leaders’-Level Meetings, including with Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United States, and the United Nations.

“In these meetings, I promoted and highlighted key interests in ASEAN, such as food and energy security, migrant workers protection, climate change, and digital transformation, issues that are of strategic importance to the Philippines,” the President said before going back to the Philippines Thursday night.

“Fellow ASEAN Member States and some external partners highlighted the importance of a rules-based international order. They also maintain that ASEAN is a competitive and integrated regional economy, underpinned by the principle of Centrality.”

The President also joined the ASEAN Plus Three Summit with ASEAN Member States, China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, in discussing areas of cooperation such as food security, climate

change, and digital economy, among others.

In the East Asia Summit that Marcos attended, broad strategic, political and economic issues of

common interest and concern were tackled.

“We discussed regional and international issues, during which I emphasized the importance of

a rules-based international order, especially in the disputes in the South China Sea, inasmuch as they affect not only our nation but also the entire region,” he said.

“I reaffirmed that the Philippines is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes and called on all countries to continue upholding freedom of

navigation and overflight in the South China Sea in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS.”

The President urged all parties during the meeting to exercise self-restraint and refrain from unilateral and assertive activities that could increase tensions, and lead to misunderstandings and miscalculations in the South China Sea.

Other significant regional and global issues including the situation in Myanmar, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and the conflict in Ukraine were also discussed.

On the sidelines of the summit, the President held informal talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and US Vice President Kamala Harris on strengthening cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.

President Marcos also had bilateral meetings with the Leaders of Cambodia, Canada, Cook Islands, India, Republic of Korea, and Viet Nam, as well as with the President of the World Bank Group (WB) where they had robust and candid productive discussions.

On the economic side, the President reported witnessing the signing of the Philippines-Republic

THE PAMPERED PINAY: Back to School

‘Tis the season of rushing in and out of overflowing parking lots… stuffing everything from lunchboxes and backpacks to brains and schedules…pumping out projects & papers…pulling early mornings and all-nighters…Yup. It’s back to school season.

For all the initial grief that goes into getting back in the habit… the beginning of every school year delivers a fresh note of hope and infinite possibility. The raw energy that buzzes around campuses as another year in academia commences is something I hope I never tire of. That’s why I’ve decided to go back to school, too. University of Cambridge, here I come!

I know what you’re thinking.

“Francine reallllllly likes school. She won’t stop until she has another degree.” And I do. And I won’t. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a bit of a nerd…a fashionable one… but, yes, a bit of a nerd. I embrace opportunities to get educated like they’ll never come again. I read case studies…for fun. I attend classes in a wide range of areas just because I want to learn…about everything. You know those kids that always ask why? I was (read: still am) one of those kids.

But I know I’m not alone. My friends, how many of you have considered pursuing a(nother)

degree? How many of you think that taking a class to enhance or refresh your skill set may prove to be a critical step in pursuing your dream career or desired promotion? How many of you need a hobby that you can pour yourself into, one that you can challenge yourself with?

As busy as I am, I am allowing myself to pamper my brain with fresh perspectives. Don’t waste all your brain power playing games on your cell and social media stalking. It’s never too late to prove to yourself that your mind can continue to evolve.

Rejoice in the opportunity to take a class online or attend workshops and seminars in your field of interest/ profession. You can even check out courses at your local community college or learning annex. When we learn, we grow…and you don’t want to plateau. Enjoy!

Taiwan to open 800,000 jobs to foreign workers, OFWs among top picks -- MECO

MANILA -- At least 800,000 employment opportunities for foreign workers will be opening up in Taiwan—and Filipinos will be favored for jobs in some sectors, according to the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, Taiwan.

Taiwan Labor Representative

Cesar Chavez, Jr. said Taiwan aims to hire more Filipino employees, particularly in the service and hospitality sector, which will be expanded in the coming months.

Hundreds of thousands of workers from other countries are said to be the target, and Filipinos are among the favored groups.

“The target is mga December daw mag a-announce na and something like 800,000 workers,” said Chavez.

The demand for Pinoy English teachers is also high, according to MECO. Since Taiwan holds a bilingual program, the country is looking for more English teachers.

“‘Yung LET passer na teacher ay averaging 72,000 NT$, so that’s around P130,000 a month. Yung mga non-let passer, 40,000 NT$ so mga P70,000,” Chavez said.

Taiwan might be a small country, but more than 150,000 OFWs are deployed there, most as factory workers.

One of the successful OFWs in Taiwan is Jeffrey Opriasa, who was recently honored as one of the country's "model migrant workers."

Opriasa started as an operator in a semiconductor factory, until he was promoted to line reader. He is now a head troubleshooter who trains not only fellow Filipinos but also other nationalities.

“Nakita nila bakit yung mga Pilipino sobrang flexible, ang bibilis kumilos, sobrang liliksi,” he said.

“From Presidential Palace daw sabi niya, Jeff napili ka ng Presidential, mame-meet ng personal yung President ng Taiwan ,bibigyan ka ng award for the best employee ng Taiwan, sabi ko, wow!” Opriasa said.

PBBM secures $22M

investments from Indonesia’s top companies President Ferdinand R. Marcos

Jr. secured on Tuesday $22 million in investments following his meetings with Indonesia’s leading companies for increased partnerships on animal health, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital connectivity.

The President met the top executives of those companies in Jakarta at the sidelines of his participation in the 43rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits.

Among those who met the President were top executives of PT Vaksindo Satwa Nusantara, PT WIR Asia Tbk, and Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (PSN).

PT Vaksindo Satwa Nusantara intends to cooperate with its local partner, Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Company (UNAHCO Inc.) Philippines, on veterinary vaccines kand will pursue an infusion of US$2 million in investments this year. They will soon provide the Philippines with an avian influenza vaccine.

Another company that met the President was PT WIR Asia Tbk., which its subsidiaries, namely PT Mata Nilai Republik plan to invest US$20 million in the next 5 years. WIR is an Indonesian publicly listed company that develops augmented reality (AR) technology integrated with virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI).

It is considered the first Metaverse company Indonesia.

President Marcos also met with Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (PSN) who provided an update on the fruition of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last year which involved the launching of a satellite in December 2023 that could help improve digital connectivity in the Philippines.

PSN signed the MOU with WIT Philippines Inc. in September last year during the President’s State Visit to Indonesia.

The allocation of 13.5 Gbps of

bandwidth for the Philippines from a new satellite that PSN is scheduled to be launched within the year, allowing WIT to fulfill its intentions to develop a bigger market for both government and consumer markets in the Philippines.

Philippine Orthopedic Center gets P200-M funding boost

The Office of the President (OP) has extended a PHP200 million financial assistance to the Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC), which will sustain the country’s top orthopedic facility’s operations and its capacity to acquire state-of-theart equipment.

Citing the letter of acceptance and gratitude of POC Medical Center Chief Dr. Jose Pujalte Jr. to the OP, the Presidential Communications Office said the financial aid will strengthen the 78-year-old tertiary hospital’s operations as it faces an increasing number of patients.

“To achieve true universal health care, we need the confluence of a leader’s vision, the dedication and expertise of the health workers, and wherewithal,” Pujalte said.

“For the Filipino orthopedic sick, injured, and crippled: this moment has arrived," Pujalte said, noting that the financial assistance will allow the hospital to accommodate more than 600 patients daily.

He said the additional funding would allow hospital executives to purchase state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

The funding boost is proof of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s commitment in his second State of the Nation Address to uphold the well-being of orthopedic patients, among others, he said.

“Our hospital was designated as a national specialty center in orthopedics. That means that it’s an apex center. It’s an apex hospital, and for us to qualify, our equipment have – they have to become modern and ‘yung medyo (a bit) state-ofthe-art. So that’s where we’re going, in that direction because right now the Universal Healthcare is being implemented,” he added. (MNS)

in NCR to get aid amid rice price cap

MANILA -- Around 25,000 retailers in Metro Manila alone can receive assistance from the government amid the implementation of rice price ceilings, a trade official on Wednesday said.

During the Laging Handa public briefing, Department of Trade and Industry Assistant Secretary Agaton Teodoro Uvero said that aside from market monitoring, the DTI and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will focus on rolling out financial aid for retailers that will be affected by price limits on regular- and well-milled rice.

“(What is being) discussed is PHP15,000 (in financial aid) per retailer, and we will try to give it to all legitimate retailers who were affected by the (rice) price (cap) of PHP45 (for well-milled) and PHP41 (for regularmilled),” he said in Filipino.

Uvero said the government agencies target to start the distribution of financial assistance within this week.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed Executive Order (EO) No. 39 that sets price ceilings for regular- and well-milled rice at PHP41 and PHP45, respectively, amid the surge in rice prices despite the ample supply of the commodity in the domestic market.

“Historically, when July or August

comes, the price of rice really increases. It's just that the increase this season is strange compared to previous years so it was necessary to have a price cap,”

Uvero added.

DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual, who is in Jakarta for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting, told trade reporters Tuesday evening that he and the President closely monitor the situation in the country.

“There has been a notable level of compliance observed among the retailers monitored thus far. The initial rounds of inspections were conducted at various markets and supermarkets in the National Capital Region by a composite team comprised of members from DTI and DA (Department of Agriculture). I’m still in Jakarta participating in the ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings but I maintain continuing two-way communication with my team in DTI,” Pascual said.

Sustainable Livelihood Program

On Wednesday, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian met with the DTI executives at the DSWD Central Office to discuss the finer points in the implementation of the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) for small rice retailers affected by the imposition of price controls.

Gatchalian and DTI representatives led by Undersecretary Carol P. Sanchez discussed how the DSWD’s SLP cash payout will be smoothly implemented in line with Executive Order No. 39 that set a price cap on regular milled and well milled rice effective Sept. 5.

“We are going to use the program [SLP] to make sure that our (rice) retailers are taken care of during this unforeseen time,” Gatchalian said during the meeting, which was also attended by the DSWD Operations Group led by Undersecretary Josefina Romualdez.

He also reminded the DTI to coordinate with the rice retailers’ group following the instruction of President Marcos to ensure that all stakeholders are on board during the implementation of the cash aid from DSWD.

“In this case, the DTI was tasked to work with the rice retailers’ association to identify who the small rice retailers are. They'll pass on the list to us and, on the ground, we do payouts,” Gatchalian pointed out.

The meeting, according to Assistant Secretary for Strategic Communications Romel Lopez, was held to expedite the completion of the list of qualified small rice retailers

WORLD-CLASS FILIPINO POP MUSIC, OR PINOY-POP, HAS A MORE SUBVERSIVE HISTORY THAN YOU MIGHT EXPECT

SAN DIEGO, CA -- P-pop or Pinoy pop, may not have achieved the same global status as its Pacific cousins K-pop and J-pop, at least not yet, but of the adoring crowd that packed Expo 2020 Dubai’s DEC Arena for Filipino boy band SB19’s show last year is any indication, it may be not too far behind.

For much of the 1990s and early 2000s, the Filipino music scene was largely dominated at one end of the spectrum by gnarly, in-you-face rock outfits, as any frequent visitor to sadly missed Music Room venues could confirm, and at the other by schmaltzy love songs performed by the latest “love team” sensation from the movies.

Over the past decade or so, however, as K-pop and J-pop have become increasingly popular across our beloved old homeland – the Philippines – and rapid economic growth has allowed for better production of glossier stars, Pinoy pop has undergone something of a metamorphosis, shaking off many of the western influences that had underpinned its musical output for so long in place of something distinctly Asian but also unmistakably Filipino – and if I may please add - an occurrence that we may come to looked back upon by our “kababayans” as something of a golden era for Pinoy pop.

There is no doubt about it that the past decade has been indeed a golden era for Filipino pop music, aka Pinoy-pop or P-pop. The past couple of years alone have marked some landmark moments for the genre, which is rapidly gaining an international presence to rival that of its J-pop and K-pop forebears that have so heavily influenced the music in its current form.

SB 19 are perhaps the most obvious K-pop influenced of the current crop of Pinoy stars. The boy band was created by the newly formed Philippines branch of Korean entertainment agency “ShowBT” after an extensive talent search in 2016 – their name comes from the “SB” of their agency and subtracting the Philippine’s international calling code, +63, from Korea’s, +82.

In finest K-pop fashion, once selected – Josh, Pablo, Stell, Ken and Justin – were then put through almost three years of rigorous training in how to be the perfect pop stars by their mentor agency and were connected with Korean writers and producers before being unleashed on the world with their debut single “Tilaluha” at the end of 2018.

It was with the 2019 follow-up, “Go Up” that they really took off though. A K-pop fan account using the handle @BAE_Sodu tweeted a video of the group practicing their dance to the single in September of 2019 and the clip picked up about 4.5 million views. The official music video has also amassed more than 11 million views on YouTube.

In 2021, the Filipino boy band SB19 picked up a nomination for an MTV Europe Music Award and became the first South-East Asian act to be nominated for a Billboard Top Social Artist Award. They kept this success going into 2022 with their new single “Bazinga” spending seven weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot Trending Songs chart, breaking K-pop superstars BTS’s record for “Butter” in the process.

“Bazinga” may have set the Billboard charts on fire, but SB19 can only dream of their fellow “kababayan” Zack Tabudlo’s numbers on Spotify. When the streaming platform released its annual “Wrapped” report for 2021, Tabudlo’s single “Binibini” was revealed to be the most streamed song of the year in the Philippines.

It has amassed about 84 million streams, dwarfing the 6.4 million by SB19’s Billboard-topping effort. The track’s video, with more than 35 million views on YouTube made SB19 look like indie underdog, too and his canny recent technique of releasing collaborations with stars such as Thailand’s Billkin and Filipino heavy weights’ James Reid and Moira Dela Torre, suggests his fan base is only going to grow.

Interestingly, it’s not entirely unusual for Filipino artists to make the list, but it’s more commonly dominated by international names such as Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. With Olivia Rodriguez and Bruno Mars – both artists of Filipino descent – joining him in the top 5, and 84 million streams in a single year for “Binibini,” it was a particularly strong performance.

Unsurprisingly, it’s not only polished boy bands and perfect pop princesses who are riding the current wave of Filipino musical success.

Fairly pop-heavy, nine-piece folk rockers “Ben&Ben” (who also dropped by Expo 2022 in Dubai) topped that same 2021 Spotify wrap as the most streamed artist in the Philippines for the second year in a row. Their single “Kathang Isip” alone has achieved 181 million streams, while their total stream as a band has already soared past the one billion marks, making them the most streamed Filipino act of all time on the platform.

Sarah Geronimo, 33 seems like something of a wizened veteran next to some of the young upstarts on our list, but there is no denying that the star of screen, stage and catwalk is one of the Philippines’ biggest exports ever. She even shared a stage with Pope Francis on his historic 2019 visit to Abu Dhabi. She certainly has the respect of her P-pop peers, too. At a 2019 press conference in Quezon City – the SB19 boys unanimously identified her not only as the artist they’d most like to collaborate with but also as their biggest showbiz crush.

Meanwhile, and if you – my dear folks – thought the S Club 7/S

Club Juniors transformation was a cynical exercise in “popsploitation” you might need to sit down. The girl

Jesse T. Reyes Filipino Potpourri

Fresh Filipino blood Zack Tabudlo continues to invade people's playlists with his hit new single "Binibini" and conquers Spotify viral global charts.

Filipino star of screen, stage and catwalk Sarah Geronimo surprises fans with new "charm overload" look and with song release "Cuore" which incidentally was also co-written by her husband Matteo Guidicelli.

not in English as had been the norm in the former US colony but in Tagalog or “Taglish,” and with a frequent undercurrent of opposition to the authoritarian regime of then president Ferdinand Marcos. Heber Bartlome’s 1977 song “Nena,” for example told the story of a young girl forced into prostitution owing to an uncaring government, while Florante De Leon’s “Digoman” (War) flatly states: “I am ready to do battle for the cause of our freedom.”

Greg Lockard’s “Dance of Life,” a 1998 study of South-East Asian pop music, explained: “The rise of politicized pop music is linked to the development in the early ‘70s of the musical style known as “Pinoy.” Singing not in English but in Tagalog (or) slang-filled Tagalog that appealed to urban youth, Pinoy music was a conscious attempt to create a Filipino national and popular culture.”

The term Pinoy-pop really hit the mainstream in 1978 when Freddie Aguilar’s single “Anak” (Child) sold 100,000 copies in the Philippines in its first two weeks of release –something that was unheard of at the time. The song was released in more than 50 countries and translated into nearly 30 languages, according to local media.

“Anak” wasn’t an overly political song. It was a touching tale of a father-son relationship. Aguilar’s 1979 follow-up “Bayan Ko” (My Country) pulled no such punches, with lyrics that translates as, “The Philippines, nest of tears and poverty, my aspiration, see you perfectly free.” His song would go on to become the anthem of the 1986 uprising against Marcos, with Aguilar himself leading the crowds in singing on occasions.

much attention to the lyrics. Instead, impressed by proudly nationalistic song titles such as “My Country” and “I am Filipino,” performed in the native language. Marcos decided it was exactly the sort of movement he should co-opt for political purpose, mandating under a 1978 update to Order 75-31 of the Broadcast Media Council that all Filipino radio stations should play at least three Pinoy songs an hour as part of his campaign to boost the profile of Filipino culture and reduce outside influence.

It wasn’t the first, or last time a populist leader had misappropriated pop music for his own ends. Early in October of 2022, British pop group ‘M-People’ were furious when Liz Truss used then hit “Movin’ on Up” while she walked on stage for her Conservative Party Conference speech as UK Prime Minister, though they were also happy to note the irony of Truss using a song about breaking up with a deadbeat partner, including the line “pack your bags and get out” to highlight the bright future ahead under her leadership.

It’s a world away from shiny P-pop product of 2022, but pop music and politics alike tend to move in circles. Filipino politics has already done so last year, with the Marcos family back in power following the election of Marcos’ son Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. known as “BongBong,” as President of the Philippines.

Last October of 2022, meanwhile, Filipino Senator Jinggoy Estrada suggested banning K-dramas and other foreign-made content for Filipino screens in a familiarsounding call for the advancement of domestic culture.

annual basis. The Filipina brand of the “reality pop” 48 phenomena have picked up awards at the MYX Awards, P-Pop Awards and TikTok Awards and even has their very own theater to hold performances at Manila’s Eton Centris Mall.

A recurring theme in these success stories have been the heavy influence of K-pop and J-pop but it wasn’t always thus. While modern P-pop is more feed by meticulous dance routines, polished productions and squeaky-clean teen pin-ups, the early history of the genre is one of subversion.

The term “Pinoy” began to be widely used as a prefix to domestic pop music in the late 1970s and applied initially to a largely folk rock-inspired movement, singing

As the 1970s became the 1980s, the growing influence of US hip-hop began to show. Musically, P-pop retained a strong folks influence, in part owning to the lack of easy access to hip-hop standards such as cheap samples of record decks in the contemporary Philippines. The lyrical poetry of the genre began to emerge in P-pop, however. A trend even emerged among street theaters/musical collectives called for adapting the poems of Amado Hernandez – a Marxist Filipino poet who died in 1970 – to music.

It was also around this time that Marcos became interested in the burgeoning Pinoy-pop scene. One might have expected him to want to shut down the growing subculture but it seems he wasn’t paying to

In March of last year, during the national election campaigns, Filipino songstress Nica del Rosario, who has previously written songs for the likes of Sarah Geronimo and Barbie Almalbis, hit the No. 1 and 2 spots on the “Filipino iTunes” downloaded charts simultaneously with “Rosas” and “Kay Leni Tayo.” Both were protest songs urging listeners to reject a return for the Marcos clan and vote for rival Leni Robredo.

Could P-pop be going full circles, too?

What say you?

Anyway, with SB19 currently rocking the world’s stage, Pinoy pop artists are truly on the hunt for world domination, so check them out, “kababayans”! Mabuhay!

“The completion of the master list of the intended beneficiaries is the meeting's top agenda in order to carry out the actual payouts as soon as possible,” Lopez said.

He emphasized, however, that while the DSWD is mandated to facilitate the distribution of the cash aid, the DTI will be in charge of the grievance and complaints component of the program.

“The DTI will use their current grievance mechanism to address complaints from the ground,” Lopez said.

Palace vows monitoring of rice prices following latest inflation rate

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin vowed that the Philippine government would intensify its monitoring of rice prices following the acceleration of inflation at 5.3%.

"Ang aming opisina ay magbabantay upang maisakatuparan ang layunin na mapababa ang presyo ng bigas sa ating mga palengke at supermarkets,” Bersamin said in a press release on Wednesday.

“Ang datos na ito ay isa sa malaking dahilan sa pagpasya ng ating Pangulo sa pagtatakda ng price ceiling (sa bigas) at ito ay isang pansamantalang patakaran upang tugunan ang inflation,” Bersamin added.

Quezon Province 1st District Rep. Mark Enverga, chairperson of the House Committee on Agriculture, also attended the meeting to discuss the House initiative to raise PHP2 billion from unprogrammed funds to be used as augmentation for the DSWD’s SLP.

Gatchalian had earlier said that the SLP currently has a PHP5.5-billion budget which can immediately be used to help cushion the impact of EO 39 on small rice retailers.

“But I also welcome the additional budget as this would mean more Filipinos will be given assistance under the SLP,” he said.

Lopez said the collaborative effort between DSWD and DTI “underscores the government's commitment to

On Tuesday, National Statistician and Philippine Statistics Authority chief Claire Dennis Mapa said inflation — or the rate of increase in the prices of consumer goods and services — stood at 5.3% in August 2023, faster than the 4.7% rate seen in July but slower than the 6.3% in August 2022.

Mapa said that the main contributor to the faster inflation rate in August 2023 compared to July 2023 was the faster increase in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages.

In a separate statement, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan noted that the rice inflation rate accelerated to 8.7% from 4.2% in July.

Recently, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. approved the joint recommendation of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade of Industry (DTI) to set price ceilings on rice in the country.

Under Executive Order No. 39, the mandated price ceiling is at P41 per kilo for regular milled rice and P45 per kilo for well-milled rice.

Marcos, who sits as the concurrent Agriculture secretary, approved the price ceiling amid the surge in retail prices of rice in local markets.

Before the price ceiling that took effect on September 5, the prices of rice per kilo usually ranged from P45 to P70.

Bersamin said that Marcos had issued the EO to shield the vulnerable population against the "unjustified and artificial increases in rice prices," that was, according to him, caused by hoarding and price manipulation.

(MNS)

Spiritual Life

Valuable Lessons on Waiting

I’ve recently read the article on “Life’s Most Difficult Lesson – Learning to confidently wait for the Lord”. Waiting , whether it is 30 minutes or more is a big chunk of my time to wait for . However, I’ve used it in such a creative way, and instead of complaining, I was thanking the Lord for the long wait because I’ve learned invaluable insights on waiting – an internal stillness of spirit – trusting in God and His timing.

And I ‘ve learned to always carry a book or two, engage people in conversations to while away the time and gain valuable information insights about people.places, events and about myself.

To share on above article, it analyzes why we have become impatient, why we often go our own way instead of patiently wait for the unfolding of God’s will.

Three reasons came to light. First, we live hurried lifestyles. Our culture is action oriented. To be still and wait for direction from God seems counterproductive hence we jump in to get results. Our schedules are full and the prospect of spending uninterrupted, unhurried time seeking the mind of

My Personal Testimony

Christ seems impossible. But that is the only way to hear His voice and know His heart. Second, we have a short term perspective; Fast food restaurants, express check-outs, and drive through coffee shops are proof of the “have-it-now” mentality in our society. We want everything quickly, but there’s no fast track to spiritual maturity, and learning to wait on the Lord is a crucial element in the development of godly character. Our demand for immediate gratification has blinded us to the benefits of waiting for a greater reward. Third, we doubt that God will come through for us. When deadlines for decisions loom or unwanted situations remain unchanged, we begin to wonder if

the Lord will ever intervene. Never doubt. God strongly support those whose heart is completely His.(2 Chron. 16:9)

Waiting for God’s direction can yield positive results. He empowers us to endure the wait, and when He finally speaks, He gives us the strength ro do what He says. I believe that the Lord is faithful to those who seek Him and watch for His plans to unfold right on schedule. He never fails to come through.

“They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:31

Shine, Jesus shine

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us. (Psalm 67:1)

I remember one of my mother's favorite sayings: "How I love to see your shining face." When faces shine they are elated, full of joy, love and anticipation. "Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow" are the words in a familiar carol that describes children waiting for Christmas.

It is humbling and awesome at the same time to me that God wants to bless us and be gracious to us. But more than that, He wants to shine upon us. Why? So we can spread the light. When I have been in His presence, His light is reflected in me for others to see. The Old Testament talks of Moses' face shining so brightly after he communed with God that he had to veil it.

Jesus said He is the Light of the World, the one thing that can dispel the shadows in our souls. We, too, are called to "let our

Danny Hernaez From Whom All Blessings Flow

light so shine before mankind that people may see our good works and glorify our Father in Heaven." (Matthew 5:16) When God's light shines upon us, we are blessed double-fold. We receive the warmth of His loving presence and are also called to be His reflection to a dark, hurting world. Like the star over Bethlehem, we become a beacon for all seeking truth, love, and refuge. In anticipation, with our eyes all aglow, we point to our Savior. Shine, Jesus shine. Amen.

And now may the Lord bless you, and may the Lord keep you,

Two Sundays ago, Jesus spoke about the Church, and we heard how he gave Peter the “keys” to the Kingdom. On Sunday, Our Lord shows us how it works, given the various situations that are inevitably to arise within the community of his disciples. Today’s gospel reading from Matthew 18:15-20, Jesus teaches about reconciliation. What we in the Church now call the Sacrament of Reconciliation indicates how we are to live under God’s reign. Jesus knows the weaknesses of the human heart all too well. Knowing that his disciples, whom he calls his brothers, will sin against each other he teaches us the appropriate action to take in these instances and shows its ultimate purpose. The action commonly known as fraternal correction, addresses the wrongdoing by calling the attention of the one who has done wrong. The purpose here is not retribution nor the shaming of the offender, but rather, reconciliation - the return of the sinner to the community of disciples where love is the norm of living.

Jesus gives the steps of fraternal correction. The first is to speak directly to “him alone,” with the hope of quietly winning the offender back to fellowship among the disciples. This teaches us to be as concerned for the transgressor's welfare as we are for our own. If this does not work, the second step is to “take one or two others” along to speak with him. The witnesses are not meant to put him on trial but to persuade him to see

the wrong he has done as well as to communicate the desire to win him back to the fold. If he still “refuses to listen,” the whole matter must then be referred to the Church - the larger expression of the community - whose help is then sought to find ways for his return. If he “refuses to listen even to the Church,” then he has to take what it is he really wants given all of his refusals, and live outside of the community. Though the last remedy may seem severe and punitive, the object here is still reconciliation. The painful separation from the community may result in making the offender long for home; the faith-family of God.

Such is the power given by Jesus to His Church: “whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” This power does not give the Church license to make decisions on its own. According to several biblical commentaries, this empowers the Church to judge righteously according to God’s Law.

Paul tells us in the Second Reading

(Rom. 13:8-10) that love is the fulfillment of the Law. Thus, acting on love and teaching the people to do likewise form part of the “keys” to the kingdom! This power emphasizes the Reign of God, rather than the rule of men.

The story of Ezekiel in the First Reading (Ez. 33:7-9) helps us understand this power given to the Church. Appointed “watchman for the house of Israel,” Ezekiel was tasked to preach God’s Word, calling the Israelites to repentance: “When you hear me say anything, you shall warn them for me.” In the Church, the Pope and the bishops united to him are our prophets for they speak God’s Word, and not their own. Out of love for God, they urge us to do what we recite in our Psalm (Ps. 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9): “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” They, too, are the “watchmen” who remind us that God is the “Rock of our salvation” who never tires of forgiving us. The tasks of binding and loosing, forgiving sins and reconciling sinners are certainly extraordinary works of divine nature. Jesus reminds his apostles about the necessity of prayer, as they must be in communion with him in the exercise of such extraordinary power. Only then can we be assured that we will be heard and answered. As Ezekiel was dependent on God in addressing the people, the apostles must also be always in touch with Him in prayer, seeking His guidance in all things according to His Will.

“The Philippines remains resolute towards the peaceful resolution of disputes. We continue to support freedom of navigation and overflight and the rules-based international order in the South China Sea,” he said.

“There is a mistaken notion among some that to own a paper is to have a license to clobber one’s enemies and attack people we don’t like. A newspaper is an information tool to reach a large number of people at a given time. A newspaper should inform, educate, entertain and provide viewpoints that could give us the means to make intelligent decisions for ourselves and others.” — Ernie Flores Jr., founding editor and publisher

Physical

Therapists Help People of All Ages.

NATIONAL CITY, CA -- Physical therapists are experts in human movement who are trained to evaluate and treat all kinds of musculoskeletal issues. They are highly trained in prescribing and progressing exercise to help people move and feel better. Because everyone moves and everyone can benefit from exercise, physical therapists can help people through their entire lives. Some people see a physical therapist shortly after birth. The most common reasons a baby would need to see a PT would be something like torticollis or cerebral palsy. Torticollis is a postural issue that causes babies to hold their heads tipped to one side. Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that causes difficulty with movement and coordination.

As children continue to grow, some have trouble hitting their motor milestones - like rolling, crawling, or walking. Physical therapists can use their expertise to help encourage development of motor skills and coordination to get these children back on track. Sports injuries become more common in adolescents. Whether it's an ankle sprain, or an ACL surgery, a PT can help. Some adolescents have issues from the rapid growth their bodies go through. Things like growth plate fractures, growing pains, Osgood-Schlatter's disease, and Sever's disease are all common in adolescence. As adults, a lot of us will have

back pain - studies say up to 80% of us. Physical therapy is one of the first treatments recommended for back pain. Physical therapists also see injured adults. It could be from weekend warrior type sports injuries, overuse, or from an accident at work. Some adults also start to show symptoms of diseases like multiple sclerosis, or myositis which also benefit from physical therapy.

Later in life, people tend to accumulate more health issues that impact their ability to move. Issues like arthritis, joint replacements, strokes, and heart attacks are all things a PT can help with. Physical therapists also help people age better - keeping them moving with exercise programs that help reduce falls, or helping them make adaptations and modifications to keep them in their homes safely. Movement is a constant in life. As

movement experts, PTs can help people of any age. Some specialize in treating pediatric patients, and some specialize in treating geriatric patients, but all PTs have the expertise to help people move better.
