COMMUNITY SPIRIT

There have been many changes in the past forty plus years, when I moved to the Clearfield, South Dakota community. There were many more area residents, and the little town of Clearfield had a post office, bar and pool hall, repair shop, Lutheran Church, and a community hall. Although the other enterprises were active, the hall had fallen to disrepair and was no longer in use. In fact, it had become an eyesore with broken windows, deteriorating siding and sagging roof. There were several active country schools in the area, as well as several women’s clubs. It was at a meeting of the Goldenrod Extension Club at my house when I commented on how sad it was to see that old hall going the way of many barns and other old buildings and how it would be nice if somehow it could be restored and used. Immediately, Gen Fast, whose father, Leonard Storms (a homesteader) exclaimed, YES! Let’s do something! She further stated,“When I was a little girl, I used to go with my dad to the hall and watch him putting down that nice wooden dance floor and it would make him so sad if he saw what it looks like today.”

Indeed, Leonard Storms and many other early settlers would be ashamed of what their dream of a community center had become. One hundred years ago, many folks pooled everything from five to twenty dollars to raise money for the project, and construction was soon underway for what was to become a gathering place for the community.

And how do you argue with a sweet lady like Gen Fast?

Others joined her sentiments and the seed was planted to fix up the old hall. When I told my husband that evening about the discussion, his comment was, Are you nuts? That old hall can’t be fixed up…it’s in too bad of shape! In the following days, I learned that other husbands and residents in the community had the same mindset. But you never say “never” to a group of determined women. In no time, fund raising had begun. The Clearfield area ladies are known far and wide as being good cooks, so we soon found ourselves running food sales at area auctions, funeral and civic dinners and running the concession stand at the local rodeo. We made directional signs, quilts, ran craft shows, bake sales, and published a suc-

cessful cook book. It wasn’t long until not only my husband, but other nay-sayers were hard at work with renovation and helping with some of our fund-raising projects.

Not only was the hall renovated, but indoor plumbing, heating and air conditioning installed, a fully functional kitchen added, and an addition housing a stage area. Fund raising efforts are now underway for new windows and siding to be installed in time for a big 100th birthday party which will be held July 28, 2018. We recently packed the building for our annual fall pie/soup supper, and are planning our annual Community Christmas Program to be held December 2.

All of the original donors for the Clearfield Community Hall have been deceased for many years, and sadly, the majority of the ladies that joined Gen and our club ladies in our efforts have also passed on. There are no businesses, churches or country schools left, but one cannot drive past or enter that well-kept Clearfield Hall, without knowing that this hall is a perfect example of what “community spirit” is all about.
