GETTING STIRRED UP

Because I am not an expert on the economy and have my hands full trying to keep up with the bookkeeping and tax work here on our little ranch in South Dakota, perhaps my knowledge about spending habits could be improved.

Just yesterday I received a phone call that still angers me.

I have tried to eliminate telemarketers from calling, but I suppose this call was not expressly in that category. As I was in the process of preparing a meal for four extras, I did not appreciate being interrupted, but hate to not answer the telephone when it rings for fear it might be important, so with one hand stirring gravy, I reached for the phone with the other, only to hear a ladies voice on the other end saying, “Hello Mrs. Hollenbeck, how are you today?” I answered, “Busy!” She then said, “This will only take a minute and is regarding your Humana drug policy.” Thinking that she would ask if I wanted to continue with Humana or not and a simple “yes” or “no” would end the conversation, I continued stirring the gravy and listening to her southern sounding voice as she started telling me which eye drops and pills I had received in the last year and then went on to tell me how much I could save if I would get them from one

of several on-line mega pharmaceutical companies. I was starting to get a bit disgusted with this lady and informed her that I was happy with the little hometown drug store where I get my prescriptions filled. She began telling me how I could save four dollars on one and 6 cents a pill on another and I continued to tell her that I was not interested in changing and planned to stay with my local druggist.

The potatoes were beginning to boil over and so was my temperament, especially when she sarcastically said, “Why don’t you want to save some money?” I’m certain that I beat a land-speed record stirring that gravy as I loudly replied, “BECAUSE I’M HAPPY WITH MY PHARMACY!” I hung up on the ol’ gal and went back to preparing dinner, but here I am the following day, still in a stew and writing about that call.

Yes, I could probably save a few dollars by shopping online, but looking at the big picture, am I really saving anything other than her job? I believe in supporting our local economy by shopping in our hometown stores as much as possible. Because of online shopping and big box stores,

many small communities have lost their local pharmacies and other essential businesses, which is sad. That local pharmacy where I get my prescriptions filled hires a number of friendly and helpful employees, has been extremely helpful in answering my questions and in providing excellent service, and they pay a good amount of taxes that supports our county road department, schools and other entities that is beneficial to all of us.

In my opinion (and everyone is entitled to one), if everyone shopped online for their essential products, our small towns would become smaller and more stores would be vacated. This would not only cause a hardship on many, but local tax revenues would diminish and those of us remaining would have to make up the deficit. Jobs would be lost with more folks moving out of the rural areas to seek employment. And the next time someone I don’t know calls me on the telephone to explain how he or she can save me some money by changing my shopping habits, I will be faster at hanging up and the gravy will be the only thing that gets stirred up.
