Assistant Professor Position in Veterinary Technology Systems

NEBRASKA COLLEGE of TECHNICAL AGRICULTURE - CURTIS, NE -

with DVM degree required for a Veterinary Technology faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor starting January 2, 2018.

Core Duties/Responsibilities: Develop and teach courses within the Veterinary

Technology Systems Division. Working as a member of a departmental team, educate and support students who will possess the skills necessary to pass the AVMA veterinary technician licensure exam upon graduation. Responsibilities include the development and updating of course syllabi, lesson plans, laboratory manuals, power point presentations, and course materials for both lecture and laboratory formats utilizing new technologies.

Plan, develop, teach, and follow-up with students and instructors of Vet Tech short courses, continuing education, dual credit enrollment, and on-line courses using Canvas LMS technology as applicable. Assist with student academic advising and student management within the division. Maintain student progress and evaluation records on the Canvas system. Assess instructional supply needs for own instructional areas. Assist in carrying out college policies as developed by the college administration. Assist with recruiting and publicity, including tours of the college for prospective students, parents and visitors. Assist with internship experience coordination and visitations. Assist with advising, supervision, guidance, and fund- raising for extra-curricular student activities and student organizations. Improve student learning outcomes by following this process: a) work with your advisory council, division chair, and other professionals to identify appropriate program and course level student learning outcomes, b) list appropriate learning outcomes in every course syllabus, c) assess student learning outcomes in every course, d) use the results of assessment of student learning outcomes to improve learning in subsequent semesters, and e) report the results of your engagement in this process.

Other duties as assigned, such as participating in shared governance by serving on college-wide committees.

Additional Specialized Position Duties: Oversee health care of Veterinary Technology animals including weekend, holiday and emergency care. Maintain Nebraska license in Veterinary Medicine by attending appropriate continuing education courses. Through in-service activities, maintain proficiency and develop new skills in veterinary medicine, animal health and care. Liaison with veterinarians and technicians through association meetings, advisory meetings and internship visits. Attend Veterinary Technology faculty and staff meetings.

Minimum Qualifications: Possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an AVMA accredited professional program in Veterinary Medicine; be a Nebraska licensed veterinarian or able to obtain licensure within six months of hire; three years of recent mixed animal, predominately large private practice experience in Veterinary Medicine.

Preferred Qualifications: Two years of recent teaching experience; membership in the Nebraska Veterinary Medicine Association and/or American Veterinary Medical Association; recruiting and fundraising experience; previous experience sponsoring student activities and/or clubs and organizations.

College Description: NCTA is a two-year, open admissions unit of the University of Nebraska with programs in agriculture and veterinary technology. The college has received significant national recognition for the quality of its academic programs and the success of its graduates, including recent selection by Forbes magazine as one of the top 30 trade schools in the United States.

The veterinary technology program has been accredited by the AVMA for more than 40 years and was one of the first accredited programs in the United States. Veterinary Technology facilities include a clinic, a surgery suite, four x-ray rooms, anesthesiology facilities, a necropsy laboratory, a clinical pathology laboratory, a teaching amphitheater, and associated facilities. Animal holding facilities include a kennel, a cat colony, an aviary, multiple facilities for exotics and small mammals, and facilities for horses and agricultural livestock.

As a college within the University of Nebraska system, NCTA faculty enjoy generous system benefits, including a tuition waiver for 15 credits per year for employees or dependents attending any system university. NCTA faculty are eligible for promotion, with appropriate raises, through traditional academic ranks. As an institution, NCTA does not award tenure. NCTA works closely with our system land grant university, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, located 3 1/2 hours to the east.

NCTA is located in rural western Nebraska, in the bucolic town of Curtis with a population of approximately 900. The town is 45 minutes south of North Platte, approximately 4 1/2 hours east of Denver and the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, and 4 1/2 hours west of Omaha. Characteristic of the rural Great Plains ecosystem, the area is largely composed of irrigated row crop farms, cattle ranches and wildlife habitat.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifestyle has changed drastically from that of just a few short years ago, and yet some things remain the same as they were generations ago. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure the biggest change factor today is the coming of the computer age. Not long ago, very few of us had a computer or even knew what they were, and now practically every home in American has at least one computer. Vehicles and farm equipment are controlled by computers and practically everything we deal with in the everyday operation of our homes or farms are at the mercy of computers and computer savvy repairmen.

Of course, the first experience most of us had with this modern invention was when the local implement dealer or feed store had computers installed that was supposed to speed up their service efficiency. We all recall the time when we told the parts man what we needed, he took it from the shelf, wrote out a ticket, collected payment and we were headed home in record time.

The first experiences with the computer was to wait while the salesman, with one finger, typed in numbers

and codes, then had to ask for our name, address, telephone number and all sorts of personal information, then as considerable time passed, we waited for a printer to eventually eject several large sheets of paper with holes on the perforated sides that the poor clerk had to attempt to remove before we were able to complete a transaction. Computer efficiency has come a long way in a short while and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure we would be hard pressed to live without them, especially in the field of medicine and other important aspects of our life.

The majority of Americans not only have computers in their homes, but have smart phones (which are basically a high-tech computer), and those phones have become a part of folks everyday lifestyle. Many cannot start their day without first checking their phones, and that is the last thing they put down when they go to bed at night. Some people cannot walk, eat, or unfortunately drive, without constantly checking their phones and interaction with others is almost nonexistent, except through texting on their phone. We recently had din-

ner at a local cafĂŠ and in the center of the dining room was a large table occupied by a dozen of what appeared to be construction workers. Everyone had their head bent looking at their phones and there was absolutely no conversation among them and they could barely eat their meal.

There are concerns among modern educators that our youth are not learning to verbally communicate, and cite the increased use of smart phones as the main reason. I recently saw a post (while checking Facebook on my smart phone) that read: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m having folks over to stare at their phones later if you want to come by.â&#x20AC;? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure this was just a tongue-in-cheek post intended to draw a few chuckles, but is almost too realistic to be funny.

By the way, I appreciate all the comments I receive about my articles, as it indicates that folks really do like to read something besides what is found on their smart phones or computers
