After a recent trip to Arizona, I became more confused than ever about the meaning of the word, â&#x20AC;&#x153;ranch.â&#x20AC;? According to the dictionary, the word ranch means a farm consisting of a large tract of land, together with facilities needed to raise livestock, especially cattle. That description is what most of us that live in the Tri-State area have been accustomed to knowing.

I traveled to Arizona as a featured performer at the Arizona Cowboy Poetry Gathering, one of the largest gatherings in the United States, and was invited to a brunch (what we call â&#x20AC;&#x153;breakfastâ&#x20AC;?) at a ranch in the Prescott area, and I was excited to visit a ranch in the Southwest. Of course, I wondered how this ranch compared with the one I live on, what breed of cattle are raised on it, whether or not they use horses in the everyday operation, and other curiosities in my mind.

How surprised I was when the shuttle van I was being transported in pulled through a gate that probably cost most than my home. The ranch consisted of

approximately two acres, of which a good portion was consumed by a house with about the same amount of square feet as our indoor arena. I saw no cattle, however, there was an old horse in a pen behind the house.

Needless to say, I was quite amazed that this was called a â&#x20AC;&#x153;ranch,â&#x20AC;? but soon learned that there were hundreds of ranches of this type in the area.

The return flight, from Phoenix to Denver, also introduced me to more education on Arizona ranches.

A pretty lady was seated next to me and we two were soon visiting as the plane taxied away from the gate.

This lady asked where I was from. I told her that I lived on a ranch in South Dakota. She replied that she too lived on a ranch near Tucsonâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a cactus ranch. All sorts of thoughts raced through my mind as to what a â&#x20AC;&#x153;cactus ranchâ&#x20AC;? was. I wondered if they milked the cactus, or just what type of commodity is derived from them, but kept those thoughts to myself. She went on to ex-

plain that they only had a seven-acre ranch and that they had a caretaker who takes care of the cactus. I became more confused than ever.

After losing a few nights sleep befuddled over what the meaning of â&#x20AC;&#x153;ranchâ&#x20AC;? really is in this day and age, I went to the trusty internet in search of an explanation for a â&#x20AC;&#x153;cactus ranch.â&#x20AC;? I learned that in Arizona, many of the cactus are endangered plants and it is against the law to remove them or attempt to transplant them, however, if cactus are planted and raised on private property, they can be sold and used for landscaping purposes (I suppose on those two acre ranches such as the one near Prescott described above), and this can be quite a lucrative business.

I sure was glad to get back home to South Dakota to what I now call â&#x20AC;&#x153;a working cattle ranch.â&#x20AC;? Now we know.
