Gold Buckle Futurity Grows with Ranch Horse Interest

The Gold Buckle Futurity continues to grow with the demand for performance and ranch horse prospects. For 50 years, the futurity has been an exciting and exclusive opportunity to showcase one’s prospects as they grow and mature.

The incentive keeps growing.

Crystal Andersen, who took the position of NILE Equine Programs Director this year, was intent on continuing to improve the Gold Buckle Futurity.

Andersen introduced the stallion service auction, in which stallion owners either donate a breeding or make a donation. The breedings are auctioned off to raise money for the futurity.

“This year, we were able to add an extra $10,000 right off the bat,” she said.

There are three ways for a horse to be eligible for the Gold Buckle Futurity. They must be either a horse sale graduate, accepted into the current year’s sale, or the offspring of enrolled stallions (a list of which can be found in this sale catalog).

“I think that [the futurities] have been a real asset to NILE. And I think what it has accomplished is breeders bring higher quality horses. They bring very good horses thinking that somebody will buy them and bring them back to the futurity and they will have a chance to win and be competitive. And I think it’s increased the quality of horses that are consign and particularly the conditioning of horses. It seems to be much better than it did 20 years ago,” said Ward Fenton.

Gold Buckle Futurity entrants can show horses ranging from a weanling to an aged horse, so there is something for everyone, regardless of the age of their prospect.

“It’s really neat, because the classes are split up by the horse’s age,” said Andersen. “A lot of shows like our AQHA show – a junior horse is three to five.

“But if you’re in [the Gold Buckle] two-yearold class, other horses are going to have a lot of those similar bobbles. I think that it really helps

level out the playing field when you are competing against horses that are the exact same age.”

Fenton’s colts have held their own for the past two decades.

“We have had tremendous success,” he said. “We’ve placed high and won a lot of futurities over the 20 years and it’s been a real addition to promote my horses. And I think our horses are very well known over a pretty wide area, partly because of participating in the NILE futurities and doing so well.

“We usually have people come to the sale who are there specifically to buy a futurity horse, he said.

Fenton’s breeding program fits the NILE sale and futurity like a glove.

“One thing that I am very particular about is conformation, body correctness and eye appeal. And as a result, we’ve always done very well in the halter classes.

Winners:

5 Yr Old Ranch Horse Futurity: Smooth Sixtys CD- Quin Larsen

4 Yr Old Ranch Horse Futurity: Paddys Hydrive- Crystal Andersen

3 Yr Old Ranch Horse Futurity: TDM Playboys Driften- Paul Van Dyke

“We have always bred for a horse that we think is very versatile at a lot of events, particularly in the cattle events,” he said.

The NILE continues to focus its equine programs on ranch and performance horse prospects, and the futurity offers the opportunity to compete with one’s prospect in a fun and rewarding atmosphere.

“It really invites a lot of local people, maybe people that are ranchers and don’t show a lot, it encourages them to come. I know several people that do show often and they still come and show there, but it is really just a fun outing,” said Andersen.

Andersen said she is excited for the lineup of old and new classes this year.

“We’re going to have a Ranch Horse class for weanlings through five-year olds; Trail classes for weanlings through riding horses; and Ranch Riding futurity for the three-, four-, and five-yearolds as well.”

Andersen was also able to ensure each class will have hardware to take home if they emerge victorious in their class.

“We will have buckles for winners. I think we’re giving out 15 buckles this year for the Gold Buckle futurity.”

ASHLEY QUARTER HORSES provides 2025 NILE Raffle Filly

Ashley Quarter Horses has been a part of the NILE for over a decade and felt it was time to give back. They proudly offer one of their homegrown fillies for the NILE Raffle Filly in 2025.

Royal Smart Delta, a two-year-old sorrel filly, represents the Ashley Quarter Horse program’s strength of pedigree. She is by Boons Royal Cat (Once in a Blu Boon and out of Freckles Dry Star (Smart Smoken Playboy by Freckles Playboy).

“I think a lot of people will be interested in her just because of the strength of her pedigree and what she could do,” said Lanell Ashley.

In 2022, a paternal brother to this year’s raffle filly topped not only the yearling category, but the entire NILE sale. Royal Dualin Pepto sold for $26,000.

Ashley Quarter Horses has a longstanding relationship with the NILE, having consigned horses to the sale for nearly 15 years.

Royal Smart Delta, the 2025 Raffle Filly, has depth of pedigree.

“[The NILE] has been good to us. We’ve done really well down at the NILE. They’ve treated us really well, most years our colts are right up there at the top. We’ve been in it a long time, so I thought it was something just nice to give back – a nice filly, right out of our program,” Ashley said.

Ashleys have profound history and knowledge of the Quarter Horse Breed. Last year marked their fiftieth in the breeding business. “Originally, we started out just needing good horses to use on the ranch,” said Ashley. But their prospects have been used in all

kinds of disciplines, including cutting, reining, working cow horse, trail, barrels, mounted shooting, and more. “Our main bloodlines are cow bred horses with a little bit of speed, and they excel,” said Ashley.

Their broodmare band consists of roughly 75 mares, to which they breed eight of their own stallions. With a focus on ability and disposition, Ashleys are consistently adding fresh bloodlines to their program. Their stallions closely derive from lineages such as Once in a Blue Boon, Shining Spark, Woody Be Tuff, Vintage Smoke, Dash Ta Fame, and Driftwood.

This year’s raffle filly’s half-brother was the high-selling horse of the 2022 NILE Horse Sale. Boons Royal Cat is their shared sire.

“We’re trying to use the best genetics out there,” he said.

Genetics, he said, are the reason his colts have easygoing dispositions, making it easy to bring them to the excitement of the NILE straight from the ranch. Aside from the work they put in handling their colts, Ashley said, “You’ve got to have a good-minded horse to do that. Genetics is 99% of it, and then what we do here is just 1%.”

The raffle filly is no different, having a “super disposition,” as Ashley put it.

Ashleys look forward to the 2025 NILE. “We love the people and what they’re doing down there. My wife and I, we call that our yearly vacation, going down to NILE for a day to get off the ranch. We’re very impressed with how they’re running it.”

This year, the raffle filly is unstarted so the winner may start her their own way.

StrongPromotion and Partnership

Stallion owners TEAM UP WITH NILE

genetics shape the Quarter Horse breed, and some of the nation’s best ranch and performance horse sires are on the NILE’s Gold Buckle Stallion list.

The NILE’s Gold Buckle Futurity and the list of corresponding enrolled stallions grows annually. As of 2025, over forty stallions have enrolled into the NILE’s incentive program.

Stallion owners are seeing the benefit of partnering with the NILE. The program offers promotion and exposure on various fronts, including the opportunity for progeny to be shown in future years in the Gold Buckle Futurity classes.

Jeri Slover has enrolled her stallion, Metallic Heaven, for two years. This year, she donated a breeding to the stallion service auction, which raised funds to put toward the Gold Buckle Futurity.

“I’m just a believer in the NILE, how it represents these wonderful horse breeders and buyers that come from all over the place. It is one of the only big shows you have that brings people together, where you can share these nice bloodlines that breeders have and be able to buy a nice horse. So basically, I’m just a believer in NILE and being able to donate a breeding is just a great way for me to help out.”

Equine Events Director, Crystal Andersen, appreciates how the NILE comes full circle, continuing to promote bloodlines for years to come through the futurity.

“We are promoting the local stallion owners; we’re promoting local breeding programs. We are giving local people an opportunity and a place to come show. It’s a neat, full-circle, NILE event,” she said.

One of the three ways for someone to be eligible to enter the Gold Buckle Futurity is to purchase a colt by an enrolled stallion. Many potential buyers seek out colts from enrolled stallions simply for the opportunity to show at the Gold Buckle Futurity.

Slover said her decision to enroll her stallion was to give him a bigger platform.

“I would love to give a place to showcase these nice foals that he’s throwing,” she said.

Because the NILE highlights the ranch and performance aspects of the Quarter Horse breed, enrolled stallions’ progenies are well-suited in the futurity events, which consist of ranch horse, ranch riding, and trail courses from weanlings to mature horses.

Slover believes her stallion’s colts do well in these disciplines. “He literally has world-class pedigree. You can go watch the horses go at your biggest shows, whether they be cutting or reined cow horse, the World’s Greatest Horseman... and his pedigree will look just like those horses being shown. And he’s here at a very reasonable price for people to be able to breed their horses to.”

Molly Losing, owner of Rojos Doc O Drift, has enrolled her stallion for the past three years.

Her program is tailored to ranch horse prospects, which remain in high demand. Showing her own colts at the NILE Gold Buckle Futurity has proven them capable in the show setting.

“Our colts, they really thrive on having a job, especially if that job is really relatable to them, like working cows,” she said. “The Nile Gold Buckle Futurities really fit them because it is practical work.”

Losing also brought her stud to Stallion Row in 2024, proving to be another opportunity for potential buyers to see her program.

“It’s just great publicity for them. I brought him and he was able to be down in the arena during the sale. And I actually had one couple that came to see him just because they have a full sister to him. They actually ended up buying the one colt I had there by him in the sale. So it worked out really well,” Losing said.

The NILE continues to lean into the complementarity of their equine events. The events perpetuate the promotion of quality breeding programs and provide a competitive platform for progeny to showcase their talent.

Nominations include eligibility for the stallion and all his offspring to compete in the NILE Gold Buckle Ranch Horse Futurity. To see complete list of nominated stallions go to www.thenile.org

Wilson Gooseneck Trailers

Riveted construction means Wilson aluminum gooseneck livestock trailers are more rugged for off-road use. They flex when they need to without breaking costly and time consuming welds. Once back out on the highway, you will hardly realize the trailer is back there. Stronger gates, the industry’s best floor and your lowest cost of ownership are even more reasons to buy Wilson. If you’ve got livestock to haul, make sure you’ve brought Wilson along for the ride.
