I Placed 2nd At Leadville and I’m Not A Bike Racer SkiMo Athlete John Gaston Takes 2nd Place at the Legendary Leadville 100 Trail MTB. "You can really hurt yourself in that race with poor fueling and pacing strategies that you can't overcome with just pure fitness.

I don't have the legs on paper to beat most of the guys in the top 10 that I did. But, as a result, I probably focused even more on trying to dial in my hydration and fueling to the absolute n'th degree — and it worked."

Q: How did you fuel for the Leadville 100 Trail MTB? A: My fueling plan: I focused on getting 120g of carbs per hour through a combination of 60g of my drink per hour and 60g of carbs from gels. As I started sweating more later in the race when the temperatures heated up, I was diluting my bottles more to make them less thick and easier to drink dropping the carbs to 30g per bottle, then adding a gel to take it to three gels per hour.

Q: What changes did you make to your training before Leadville 100 Trail MTB? A: With Leadville as a focus for this year, I put most of that on the back burner. At least for that month before Leadville, I cut most of the cross-training to do a proper five-week build toward Leadville. I think cycling is a massive compliment to my SkiMo. I mean, to the point where I wouldn't be able to compete at the level I do in Skimo if it wasn't for all the hours I put on a bike.

HOTTEST TREND OF 2022: HIGH-CARB FUELING High-Carb Fueling is everywhere in endurance sports and if you aren't doing it, you are at a disadvantage.

Even if you aren't competing, you will enjoy your longer workouts more if you add a High-Carb Fueling strategy.

The science works like this. You have carbs and fat to fuel your training. Carbs are like 100 octane jet fuel, and fat is like diesel. Fat will keep you going but at a much slower speed than carbs.

Put another way, the longer you can keep fueling with carbs, the more energy, power, and speed you will have. Once you get over an hour of moderate to high-

intensity activity, you will burn through most of the glycogen (i.e., carbs) your body has stored. A reasonable estimate is that you are burning 180g of carbs per hour (or 3g of carbs per minute).

In the past, fueling with 80g or even 120g of carbs would have resulted in an upset stomach.

New technology and fueling sources have made this possible without GI distress.

The case study for this is the marathoner Eliud Kipchoge. It is rumored he was getting to 160g of carbs per hour, or the equivalent of one gel every two miles.
