EXTENDED DAY The Fay School is proud to offer families a variety of before and after school options.

These programs provide enriching experiences for children outside of the school day.

All of our programs (Early Day at Fay, Stay at Fay, and After School Activities) are held on Fay’s pristine eight-and-a-half acre sanctuary, ensuring that students are in the most familiar and comfortable environment.

FAY Early Day at Fay is our mixed-age early morning care program, allowing Fay students to arrive on campus early. Early Day at Fay is designed to allow for flexibility in your family’s morning routine.

Students will be given a light snack in the dining hall and the opportunity to play in the gym, read books, and catch up on homework.

GENERAL REMINDERS Early Day at Fay registration is held online through the Extended Day Registration Module which can be accessed through My Portal at www.thefayschool.org/my-portal or directly through our Extended Day Registration Module at https://thefayschool.campbrainregistration.com.

REGISTRATION Registration for the Spring semester (January through May) begins November 18, 2019.

When registering for Early Day at Fay, parents must choose which day(s) of the week their child will attend before the semester begins. For the Spring semester, registration for Monday would include every Monday from January 13, 2020 until we dismiss for the Summer on May 29, 2020 and this cost would be $150 for the semester.

You may also register for multiple days. As an example, if you wanted to register for all five days of the week, you would multiply $150 by five, giving you a total of $750 for the Spring semester.

Broken down by day (with 91 school days in the Spring semester), the cost is about $8 a day.

We will accept drop-ins with 24-hours’ notice for a fee of $30 per morning.

REGISTRATION FEE A $25 registration fee will be waived from November 18, 2019 through December 20, 2019.

All registrations received after December 20, 2019 will be charged a $25 registration fee.

FAY

Stay at Fay is our aftercare program, allowing Fay students to stay on campus after school. Stay at Fay is designed to be a play date every day of the week. Our day is filled with a variety of activities including arts and crafts, games, books, music, outdoor activities, and more! We schedule our day with a routine of active and quiet periods of play, both indoors and outdoors. The program is open for students from the end of the school day until 6:00pm.

Pricing for the program varies and is designed to allow siblings to be picked up from school at the same time, even when they are dismissed from school or activities at different times. Parents must choose which day(s) of the week their child will attend Stay at Fay before the semester begins. You can register for as many as five days a week or as few as one day a week. We also offer childcare for parents who need care on an occasional basis, through our drop-in component of Stay at Fay. Parents must register at least twenty-four hours in advance to use the drop-in component of the program, and drop-in care is billed monthly.

The prices listed on the following page are for one semester. The prices are for one day of every week for the Spring semester. For example, for the Spring semester, registration for Monday would include every Monday from January 13, 2020 until we dismiss for Summer.

If a family is in need of childcare for five days each week, these prices would be multiplied by five and that total would be their semester cost. For example, childcare Monday–Friday (five days a week) for one child from 12:00–3:15pm would cost $2,825 ($565 multiplied by five days) for the semester.

After School Activities are a variety of enrichment classes offered through The Fay School’s partnership with faculty and local teaching professionals. The cost of these classes varies; ranging from $300 - $700, depending on the subject matter, the length of class, and the number of sessions offered per semester. Most classes are offered once a week for an hour, and some classes meet for two hours.

T H E FAY S C H O O L P I A N O S T U D I O The Fay School Piano Studio offers private piano lessons after school to students in Primary II through Fifth Grade. The program covers a wide variety of musical aspects, such as music reading, basic piano technique, musicianship, and performance. Students perform in two recitals a year. Advantages of taking piano lessons include improved concentration, discipline, patience, counting and math skills.

Piano encourages creativity, boosts self-esteem, develops fine motor skills, rhythm, and hand-eye coordination. The best part of all is that it offers students a fun and engaging “unplugged” activity!

While lessons are provided on campus, registration occurs with the piano teachers. Students must have a piano (acoustic or digital) so they can practice at home. Lessons are offered once a week, and the cost is $55/30-min lesson. To inquire about lesson availability, email: pianoatfay@gmail.com.

Learn more about our instructors Dr. Karina Praxedes Barnett and Dr. Beatriz Montoya, below.

Dr. Karina Praxedes Barnett, a native of Natal, Brazil, has been a piano instructor at The Fay School since 2005. She loves teaching the little ones the fun of reading music at the piano. Her teaching approach emphasizes sight-reading skills, basic piano technique, and recital preparation. Dr. Karina holds a position at Westbury United Methodist Church as Music Associate. Her past experiences include positions as piano faculty at UFRN in Brazil and as staff accompanist at University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. In 2003 she participated in an exchange program sponsored

by Rotary International in which she did a series of five recitals throughout England, which originated her album entitled Ciclo Brasileiro.

Dr. Karina earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from UFPB, a Master of Arts from UNICAMP, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance/Collaborative Arts from U of H, where she was a student of Timothy Hester.

Dr. Beatriz Montoya was born in Brasília, Brazil, where she received her early musical education. She obtained a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Brasília, a Master of Music from the University of Wyoming, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance, Chamber Music and Collaborative Arts from the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, where she was a student of Nancy Weems and Timothy Hester. Dr. Beatriz Pimentel is the recipient of various awards in national and international piano competitions, and has performed extensively as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and professional accompanist.

Dr. Pimentel has held a private piano studio at The Fay School since 2001, where she helped develop an after-school piano program focused on music reading, technique, and performance skills. Her main goal is to instill the love of music in young children through a fun yet disciplined private lesson program, and to offer this opportunity to children of all levels and abilities.

BALLET & JAZZ Your child will dance with delight all semester. Students are taught fundamental Ballet and Jazz skills in this class.

For class, students need to have a leotard (any color), pink leather ballet shoes for girls/black leather ballet shoes for boys, and tights (optional). Students must be registered in the Spring semester to participate in the recital at the end of the year.

This class will have its final session on May 6, one week after all other After School Activities, to account for the date of the off-campus recital. The Fay School is excited to participate for the first time in the off-campus Spring Dance Recital on Saturday, May 16, 2020. Location to be announced. Recital Costumes will be delivered in April, along with invitations. Children will be measured for their costume size during class. Family & friends are all welcome to attend the event. Children will perform 2 choreographed routines on stage: 1 Ballet & 1 Jazz. Recital costumes & all other recital expenses are covered in the cost of tuition.

H I T S M U S I C A L T H E AT R E : R A I S E YO U R VO I C E Students develop and improve creative skills through a variety of theatrical activities on the theme of “Raise your voice.” Students receive “triple threat” training from a professional teaching artist in each of the musical theater disciplines: acting, singing, and dancing! Every week they build confidence, participate collaboratively, and enhance problem-solving abilities. This class is a wonderful introduction to the world of theater in a fun, nurturing environment. The semester culminates with a parent invited showcase of the activities, skills, and materials studied.

C R E AT I V E C H E F S Are your children asking to help cook or bake in the kitchen?

Then Creative Chefs is perfect for your child. Every chef will learn skills such as kitchen hygiene, kitchen safety, and utensil skills. Throughout the semester, chefs will create appetizers, main entrees, side dishes, salads, and desserts. Throughout the semester, Creative Chefs will also explore different cultures by creating foods from various parts of the world.

SEWING This class is designed for creators! Learn to sew your own clothes, pillows, and accessories. In this class, your child will learn how to use the sewing machine, how to hand stitch, sew on buttons, and cut and baste fabric. Sewing will teach them hand-eye coordination, as well as hand dexterity. The projects are all fun and simple, and sewing machines will be provided by the instructor during the class.

ELEMENTARY Sewing classes are offered on Friday.

CERAMICS This class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay and gives students experiences in making functional sculptural pieces using a variety of techniques. Thoughtful forms, designs, and functional uses, along with good craftsmanship, are emphasized.

Development of technical skills and artistic vocabulary will include scoring, slipping, hand building (slab, coil, and pinch techniques), bisque firing, painting, and glazing, plus the endless alternative possibilities involved with clay.

ARTS & CRAFTS In Arts and Crafts, students will explore their creativity with First-Grade Assistant Teacher, Ms. Black, using various techniques in both arts and craft-making. Arts and Crafts classes provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere where students will feel comfortable to both express themselves creatively and build friendships with their peers.

T E N N I S : TG A P R E M I E R YO U T H T E N N I S P R O G R A M Come serve it up with TGA Premier Youth Tennis!

TGA has partnered with the United States Tennis Association to create a fun and innovative tennis program for your child. TGA’s five-level elementary school curriculum includes games, drills, and physical fitness activities. Every TGA class focuses on academic concepts developed by educational experts along with the rules and etiquette of tennis.

TGA brings all of the equipment, training materials, and a 10:1 student-to-instructor ratio to allow for plenty of individual attention. Our goal is to develop our students’ tennis skills and give children the building blocks for future achievement on the tennis court and in life.

TGA Premier Junior Golf brings the golf course to you!

Our national, award-winning, five-level program is specially designed for children and builds upon the math and science educational concepts they are learning about in the classroom. Fun comes first in every TGA class, but our curriculum also focuses on improving motor skills and physical fitness as well as instilling self-confidence and life values through professional golf instruction. Students learn the fundamentals, etiquette, and rules of the game. Best of all, we provide all the equipment and training materials so children of all skill levels have the chance to come out and tee it up with TGA!

GYMNASTICS At Brown’s Gymnastics, our goal is to make healthy, happy, and confident kids.

We specialize in great instruction from a highly trained staff, thinking of ourselves as teachers, not just coaches. It is not enough to just show a child a trick; we help them to understand it and then guide them through the experiences of failure and success. We recognize that not every student is the same.

In each class, the children are engaged in one of our many activities. Some of the benefits of physical activity include strong muscles, healthy cardiovascular systems, confidence, and increased productivity! Scheduled activities include, but are not limited to, freeze tag, obstacle course, dodge ball elimination, tug of war, capture the flag, and more.

FENCING The elegant sport of fencing, popular in Europe, is now gain­ing popularity in the United States and in the Houston area. Many Americans are discovering the benefits of fencing! These include helping young people gain admission and scholarships to prestigious universities as well as providing a life-long sport in which physique and age are not limitations. The fencing coach will provide all fencing equipment to the students during class.

O LY M P I A TA E K WO N D O Master Bruce and Olympia Tae Kwon Do is back!

Master Bruce is an 8th degree Black Belt who has been practicing Tae Kwon Do for over forty years.

He has over thirty years of experience teaching children and adults and has produced over 2,000 black belt students. Master Bruce opened Olympia Tae Kwon Do in 1988 and has taught at private schools throughout the Houston area for almost twenty years. Master Bruce uses Tae Kwon Do to help students improve concentration, confidence, and focus while also emphasizing the importance of positivity and respect. Master Bruce teaches Tae Kwon Do techniques through a variety of drills to help improve students’ balance, attention span, and more. Classes are a combination of learning basic self-defense moves (blocks, kicks, and punches) as well as games and drills to improve coordination and focus. Each registered student will receive a Tae Kwon Do uniform.

GARDEN CLUB Welcome to Spring! Mrs. Farrell, one of Fay’s Primary Assistant Teachers, will lead this season appropriate class!

We will emphasize the importance of gardening and its ability to restore, improve, and rejuvenate any outdoor space. Mrs. Farrell will lead lessons on the importance of our native trees, wildflowers, and birds. This class will engage in many gardening activities that are scientific and educational.

A M E R I C A N R O B OT I C S AC A D E M Y American Robotics Academy aims to excite, inspire and motivate students in grades K-5th about the importance of robotics technology. Each class offers hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of engineering design, helping students to understand “how things work”. Held in a friendly, sports-like atmosphere, students work in age appropriate teams and learn how to design, build, and test remote-controlled miniature robots. We use simple, motorized machines - all made from LEGO bricks! - to demonstrate mechanical movements and other effects.

Kindergarten Robotics - Imagineers: In the Imagineers program, students are tasked with structured building where they will learn how to put pieces together to create a structure, whether it be a car, house, bridge, etc.

Structural Integrity is an important part of the Imagineers curriculum. Emphasis is put on not just making “cool” creations but understanding what materials and designs will keep their builds safe and sound. This class will emphasize the importance of the fundamentals of building and set the groundwork to not only make their creations structurally sound, but also prepare them to make their creations move. Become the architect of your dreams in our Imagineers program. The possibilities are endless!

First -Third Grade Robotics - Brick Slayer: Join us on an adventure that requires creative thought, time management, and team communication as groups build a diverse range of off-road vehicles that battle other robots, race against the clock and play tug of war! This class will discuss drive and follower gears and the various ranges of gear ratios. Can a fast vehicle out-perform a robot with a lot of power? Here is your chance to learn which gear ratios are associated with speed or torque. Chaos and Havoc rule the day in this ruckus of Robots on the Rampage.

Fourth-Fifth Grade Robotics - Reverse Engineering 1: Rockin’ Robot (REV1): Want your robot to do the robot?

Ever seen a robot do the worm? In the “Rockin’ Robot” class, explore the different ways you can make your robot move, vibrate, and “dance”. No need for step by step instructions here. Find the pieces of the “puzzle” and put them together to recreate the robot shown in the picture.

I M AG I N AT I O N S AT WO R K Improve your child’s literacy skills through Imaginations at Work. During this two-hour class, children are given the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities and learning experiences to build and improve vocabulary, phonological skills, word recognition, narrative skills, letter knowledge, and storytelling. This is a learning experience that not only improves literacy skills, but builds self-confidence while empowering children to use their own creativity to stimulate their imaginations.

About the Instructor: Joan Katrib has designed our Imaginations at Work classes. She served as a Primary I Assistant Teacher at The Fay School for many years and has mentored with The Rice Literacy Project for over twenty years. Mrs. Katrib loves teaching because she enjoys inspiring children to use their imaginations while learning in a fun and meaningful way. Through creating and acting in stories, children retain the information learned during the class. She loves to share stories with children and listen to their own stories from their imaginations at work.
