EXTENDED DAY The Fay School is proud to offer families a variety of before and after school options.

These programs are designed to provide enriching experiences for children outside of the school day. All of our programs (Early Day at Fay, Stay at Fay, and After School Activities) are held on Fay’s pristine eight-and-a-half acre sanctuary, ensuring that students are in the most familiar and comfortable environment.

FAY

Early Day at Fay is our mixed-age early morning care program, allowing Fay students to arrive on campus early. Early Day at Fay is designed to allow for flexibility in your family’s morning routine. Students will be given a light snack in the dining hall and the opportunity to play in the gym, read books, and catch up on homework.

GENERAL REMINDERS Early Day at Fay registration is held online through the Extended Day Registration Module which can be accessed through My Portal at www.thefayschool.org/my-portal or directly through our Extended Day Registration Module at https://thefayschool.campbrainregistration.com/.

REGISTRATION Registration for the spring semester (January through May) begins November 26, 2018. When registering for Early Day at Fay, parents must choose which day(s) of the week their child will attend before the semester begins. For the spring semester, registration for Monday would include every Monday from January 7 until we dismiss for the summer on May 24, and this cost would be $143 for the semester. You may also register for multiple days. As an example, if you wanted to register for all five days of the week, you would multiply $143 by five, giving you a total of $715 for the spring semester. Broken down by day (with 89 school days in the spring semester), the cost is about $8 a day. We will accept drop-ins with 24-hours’ notice for a fee of $25 per morning.

REGISTRATION FEE A $25 registration fee will be waived from November 26, 2018 through December 21, 2018. All registrations received after December 21, 2018 will be charged a $25 registration fee.

FAY

Stay at Fay is our aftercare program, allowing Fay students to stay on campus after school. Stay at Fay is designed to be a play date every day of the week. Our day is filled with a variety of activities including arts and crafts, games, books, music, outdoor activities, and much more! We schedule our day with a routine of active and quiet periods of play, both indoors and outdoors. The program is open for students from the end of the school day until 6:00pm.

Pricing for the program varies and is designed to allow siblings to be picked up from school at the same time, even when they are dismissed from school or activities at different times. Parents must choose which day(s) of the week their child will attend Stay at Fay before the semester begins. You can register for as many as five days a week or as few as one day a week. We also offer childcare for parents who need care on an occasional basis, through our drop-in component of Stay at Fay. Parents must register at least twenty-four hours in advance to use the drop-in component of the program, and drop-in care is billed monthly.

The prices listed on the following page are for one semester. The prices are for one day of every week for the spring semester. For example, for the spring semester, registration for Monday would include every Monday from January 7 until we dismiss for the summer on May 24.

If a family is in need of childcare for five days each week, these prices would be multiplied by five and that total would be their semester cost. For example, childcare Monday–Friday (five days a week) for one child from 12:00–3:15 pm would cost $2,690 ($538 multiplied by five days) for the semester, and $5,380 for the full school year ($2,690 multiplied by two semesters).

2019 SPRING SEMESTER CARPOOL PICK-UP Carpool will run every day as follows: 2:30pm carpool will be at the Fondren building.

3:15pm, 3:45pm, and 4:30pm carpools will be at the Elementary drop-off area.

WALK-UP PICK-UP Walk-up pickup is available by signing out your child with an Extended Day Counselor.

For assistance finding the group, please visit the Fay House office or the Extended Day office.

LATE PICK-UP FEE A late fee is incurred when a child is not picked up from Stay at Fay at their registered pickup time.

The late pickup fee is $1.00 per minute per child.

After School Activities are a variety of enrichment classes offered through The Fay School’s partnership with local teaching professionals. The cost of these classes varies; currently, the cost of each class ranges from $300 - $700, depending on the subject matter, the length of class, and the number of sessions offered per semester. Most classes are offered once a week for an hour.

Some classes meet twice a week, and some classes meet for two hours once a week.

T H E FAY S C H O O L P I A N O S T U D I O The Fay School Piano Studio offers private piano lessons after school to students in Primary II through Fifth Grade. Lessons are offered once a week, and the cost is $45/30-min lesson.

Students must have a piano at home and are expected to practice at least three days a week. Primary II students will be tested prior to enrollment in order to determine readiness.

The program covers a wide variety of musical aspects, such as music reading, basic piano technique, musicianship, and performance. Students perform in two recitals a year. In addition, advantages of taking piano lessons include discipline, ability to focus, fine motor skills, ear training, and hand-eye coordination. While lessons are provided on campus, registration occurs with the piano teachers. To inquire about lesson availability, email: pianoatfay@gmail.com

Dr. Karina Praxedes, a native of Brazil, has been a piano instructor at The Fay School since 2005. She loves teaching the little ones the fun of reading music at the piano. Her teaching approach emphasizes sight-reading skills, basic piano technique, and recital preparation.

She is proficient in a wide variety of musical styles and has extensive training in chamber music and accompanying. Her past experiences include a piano faculty position at the Music School at UFRN, accompanist for Madrigal da UFRN, and also for Concert Chorale at U of H. In addition, she did a series of recitals throughout Brazil and England with an entirely Brazilian program in 2003, which originated her album entitled Ciclo Brasileiro. Dr. Praxedes earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at Federal University of Paraíba, Brazil, where she studied with Myriam Ciarlini.

She finished her Master of Arts degree at Campinas State University, in São Paulo, and completed her Doctorate in Piano Performance/ Collaborative Arts at the University of Houston.

Dr. Beatriz Pimentel was born in Brasília, Brazil, where she received her early musical education.

She obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Brasília, a Master of Music degree from the University of Wyoming, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance, Chamber Music and Collaborative Arts from the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, where she was a student of Nancy Weems and Tim Hester.

Dr. Pimentel has held a private piano studio at The Fay School since 2001, where she helped develop an after-school piano program focused on music reading, technique, and performance skills. Her main goal is to instill the love of music in young children through a fun yet disciplined private lesson program, and to offer this opportunity to children of all levels and abilities.

BALLET & JAZZ Your child will dance with delight all semester. Their ballet and jazz moves are sure to impress in The Fay School’s annual recital. Students are taught fundamental Ballet and Jazz skills in this class. For class, students need to have: a leotard (any color), pink leather ballet shoes for girls/ black leather ballet shoes for boys, and tights (optional).

Students must be registered in the spring semester to participate in the recital at the end of the year. Each registered student will receive a tutu for the spring recital.

YO U N G P I C A S S O S Our mission is to promote compassion, empathy, self-esteem, trust, authenticity, and confidence through engaging and fun art projects. Young Picassos creates an environment that fosters personal growth and self-image for children ages three and older. We believe the creative process in artistic self-expression can help children learn to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, and increase self-esteem. Young Picassos inspires true creativity and gives children their first “brushes” with imagination and self-confidence.

C R E AT I V E C H E F S Are your children asking to help cook or bake in the kitchen?

Then, Creative Chefs is perfect for your child. Every chef will learn skills such as kitchen hygiene, kitchen safety, and utensil skills. Throughout the semester, chefs will create appetizers, main entrees, side dishes, salads, and desserts. Throughout the semester, Creative Chefs will also explore different cultures by creating foods from various parts of the world.

H I T S M U S I C A L T H E AT R E : K I D S O N B R OA D WAY Students will discover the world of Broadway as they perform beloved songs for kids from musicals. Featuring music from Matilda, Snoopy, and The Sound of Music, students will build skills in dance, music and acting, and learn to be a Broadway storyteller! HITS has been a theatre in the Heights for over 25 years, helping students achieve life skills. By providing a nurturing and affirming environment, HITS teaches young people to learn and grow as performers and individuals. HITS instructors coach students to sing, dance, and act, while also emphasizing the importance of being team players, creative thinkers, and emotionally intelligent and confident communicators.

ELEMENTARY Musical Theatre classes are offered on Thursday.

SEWING This class is designed for creators! Learn to sew your own clothes, pillows, and accessories. In this class, your child will learn how to use the sewing machine, how to hand stitch, sew on buttons, and cut and baste fabric. Sewing will teach them hand-eye coordination, as well as hand dexterity. The projects are all fun and simple, and sewing machines will be provided by the instructor during the class.

CERAMICS This class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay and gives students experiences in making functional sculptural pieces using a variety of techniques. Thoughtful forms, designs, and functional uses, along with good craftsmanship, are emphasized.

Development of technical skills and artistic vocabulary will include scoring, slipping, hand building (slab, coil, and pinch techniques), bisque firing, painting, and glazing, plus the endless alternative possibilities involved with clay.

T E N N I S : TG A P R E M I E R YO U T H T E N N I S P R O G R A M Come serve it up with TGA Premier Youth Tennis! TGA has partnered with the United States Tennis Association to create a fun and innovative tennis program for your child.

TGA’s five-level elementary school curriculum includes games, drills, and physical fitness activities. Every TGA class focuses on academic concepts developed by educational experts along with the rules and etiquette of tennis. TGA brings all of the equipment, training materials, and a 10:1 student-to-instructor ratio to allow for plenty of individual attention. Our goal is to not only develop our students’ tennis skills, but to give children the building blocks for future achievement on the tennis court and in life.

TGA Premier Junior Golf brings the golf course to you! Our national, award-winning, five-level program is specially designed for children and builds upon the educational concepts, specifically math and science, they are learning about in the classroom. Fun comes first in every TGA class, but our curriculum also focuses on improving motor skills and physical fitness as well as instilling self-confidence and life values through professional golf instruction.

Students learn fundamentals and the etiquette and rules of the game. Best of all, we provide all the equipment and training materials so children of all skill levels have the chance to come out and tee it up with TGA!

CHESS Our program offers chess lessons to students of all levels and encourages fair and friendly play. On day one, overall skill will be assessed, and we set the curriculum for the year.

The following lessons will ensure that every student has a solid grasp of the fundamentals of chess: piece movement, piece value, setting up the board, and basic algebraic notation. From there, we will learn basic checkmates, simple openings, and tactics. Chess is a timeless and endlessly beneficial game for all ages. Learning chess at a young age is proven to help enhance focus, strategy, and critical thinking. Students will also learn good sportsmanship while developing a love for a game that lasts a lifetime.

J U N I O R AT H L E T E S In Junior Athletes, your child’s physical needs are enhanced and developed through a variety of organized, fun, and safe recreational sports and games. In each class, the children are engaged in one of our many activities.

Some of the benefits of physical activity include strong muscles, healthy cardiovascular systems, confidence, and increased productivity! Scheduled activities include, but are not limited to, freeze tag, obstacle course, dodge ball elimination, tug of war, capture the flag, and much more.

SOCCER Our soccer coaches focus on developing a new skill each class. The program works on coordination with and without the ball. Every student has his or her own ball at all times which allows each child to practice and play at the appropriate level. Every child will decorate a soccer ball that will be theirs to take home at the end of the semester.

FENCING The elegant sport of fencing, popular in Europe, is now gain­ing popularity in the United States and in the Houston area. Many Americans are discovering the benefits of fencing! These include helping young people gain admission and scholarships to prestigious universities as well as providing a life-long sport in which physique and age are not limitations. The fencing coach will provide all fencing equipment to the students during class.

O LY M P I A TA E K WO N D O This year we welcome Master Bruce Alamdari! He is an 8th degree Black Belt who has been practicing Tae Kwon Do for over forty years. He has over thirty years of experience teaching children and adults and has produced over 2,000 black belt students. Master Bruce opened Olympia Tae Kwon Do in 1988 and has taught at private schools throughout the Houston area for almost twenty years. Master Bruce uses Tae Kwon Do to help students improve concentration, confidence, and focus while also emphasizing the importance of positivity and respect. Master Bruce teaches Tae Kwon Do techniques through a variety of drills to help improve students’ balance, attention span, and more. Classes are a combination of learning basic self-defense moves (blocks, kicks, and punches) as well as games and drills to improve coordination and focus.

SPORTS Coach Carter Ayers is sending his coaching team to The Fay School for our Sports class for boys and girls, and everyone is encouraged to come out for a great time! ARCHERY Archery is more popular today than ever! This program is a physical education curriculum designed to teach internationalstyle target archery. The core content covers archery, history, safety, techniques, equipment, mental concentration, and self-improvement. Archery is a lifetime sport that can improve focus, encourage patience, and instill self-confidence in your child. All equipment is provided by the coaches.

GYMNASTICS At Brown’s Gymnastics, our goal is to make healthy, happy, and confident kids. We specialize in great instruction from highly trained staff, thinking of ourselves as teachers, not just coaches. It is not enough to show a child a trick; we help them to understand it by guiding them through the experiences of failure and success. We also recognize that not every student is the same. S PA N I S H The progressive Let’s Learn Spanish! Curriculum will aid in immersion and increasing knowledge of the Spanish language. Students will be actively involved in experiences with the Spanish language through music, games, and hands-on activities. Learning about cultural customs and arts of Spanish speaking countries will be presented in a fun and positive way. Students take home and keep a Let’s Learn Spanish! CD, and the entire family can learn and review Spanish together. Younger students will build confidence while learning with puppets and interactive activities. All students will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a fiesta complete with musical instruments, dancing, and a piñata. Spanish classes are offered on Monday and Wednesday (students must attend both class days).

Comets, Asteroids, & Meteors Students will explore the patterns and movement of bodies in our sky. They will explore questions such as why the sun rises and sets, why the moon changes shape, why we have seasons and so much more! Students will discover what causes craters, how asteroids function, and the history of meteors.

Light, Heat & Magnetism Students will explore the properties of motion, light, and sound by engaging in an exploration of real-life mysteries such as gravity, magnetism, bridges, sound, and why we see in the dark.

LEGO ENGINEERING In Lego Engineering, children will learn to build simple machines using gears, levers, and pulleys and then motorize these machines using Lego and KNEX educational kits, and curriculum while building math and science skills.

Children will learn how to apply engineering principles to everything they build. In each class, students will build a new and exciting machine and watch it work! Children will understand why a machine works and will learn how to manipulate a machine to go faster or slower.

I M AG I N AT I O N S AT WO R K Improve your child’s literacy skills through Imaginations at Work. During this class, children are given the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities and learning experiences to build and improve vocabulary, phonological skills, word recognition, narrative skills, letter knowledge, and storytelling. This is a learning experience that not only improves literacy skills, but also builds self-confidence while empowering children to use their own creativity to stimulate their imaginations.

About the Instructor: Joan Katrib has designed our Imaginations at Work classes. She is currently a Primary I assistant teacher at The Fay School and has mentored with The Rice Literacy Project for over twenty years. Mrs. Katrib loves teaching because she enjoys inspiring children to use their imaginations while learning in a fun and meaningful way. Through creating and acting in stories, children retain the information learned during the class. She loves to share stories with children and listen to their own stories from their imaginations at work.
