Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Saudi Bin Laden Group Mixed use Concept to schematic design (at present) through to full detail design 60 000m2 Site 3.09 (as part of the greater KAFD urban plan) represents a mixed-use development including retail, office and residential portions, linked to other sites by way of a skywalk network. The tower to the residential offer reaches 132m. The client insisted on an extremely short timescale with many of the 100 sites being designed and delivered concurrently.

Design leader on residential and general building envelope. This entailed designing and modeling the envelope, cores and leading a team to deliver the residential component.

The tower to the residential building reaches to 182m.

Mall of Egypt Cairo, Egypt Majid Al Futtaim Group - MAF Retail and Leisure Concept to schematic design 180 000m2 A large MAF 5 star rated mall with high-end international brand representation situated in an area of fast track development 10km due west of the great pyramids. This high end mall is aimed at being the most luxurious in Egypt and includes such offers as a 180m indoor ski slope and snow play area, a 16 cinema complex, a 5000m2 family entertainment centre and some of the top world fashion lables represented.

Working closely with the director in charge I was the design lead on developing the overall concept design for the entire scheme. I was also responsible for the concept and early schematic design of the Leisure and Entertainment section and external retail architecture.

1.2 million m2 of built area A 133 Hectare site located in the Musaimeer area in Doha, Qatar. The new city proposal is the commercial and administrative second phase of a development strategically located about 10 Km from the airport and 8 Km from the CBD to the north east. The scheme accommodates a substantial Power Centre and Lifestyle Mall, iconic central tower, office, residential and community developments including a regional hospital.

Design leader - this entailed the site analysis and concept design and development of three schemes. Later a single scheme as selected, and I was then responsible for taking the masterplan further by modeling neighbourhoods and public spaces in order to develop an animation of the selected scheme.

The scheme looked at the development of High end retail, residential and 5 star hotel accommodation on Clyde Quay (a listed Brunel quay).

Project Architect – As a team leader I was responsible for the design of the scheme whilst leading a team to deliver the all presentation materials and ancillary studies and visuals.

Varthur Park Varthur, Bangalore, India Mantri Developments and Elbit India Urban Design Feasibility to early scheme development 440 acres The 440 acre site in Bangalore adjacent to Lake Varthur is set to accommodate 870 villas surrounding an executive golf course. The scheme also includes an Information Technologies city and campus of circa 7 million square feet. Also accommodated on site is a regional retail centre. The scheme creates an activity zone bringing life to the area, which is fast becoming an IT and call centre hub for India.

Design leader – together with the director in charge I prepared and worked up concepts to full masterplans including all presentation and analysis whilst leading junior staff to assist on presentation material.

Abyaar Tower Jumeira, Dubai Abyaar Residential Scheme design 38 residential units The 38-unit, coastal Jumeirah-based tower was originally intended to incorporate a Christian Lacroix-designed facade, expansive lobby and luxury interiors.
Although Lacroix had worked on several Paris-based boutique hotel interiors, this was the first residential offering to which the designer’s trademark blend of past and future was to make its mark.

However in May 2009, Lacroix filed for bankruptcy.

I was acting as a residential consultant to the Dallas Office of RTKL, providing proposals and reviews for the floor plans and the flat layouts.

Creating a series of public spaces and associated offers with enhanced day and night life for Aquaba and its permanent inhabitants.

Architectural design to retail and residential buildings as part of the scheme design development of the masterplan. This included the design of layouts and typologies to the residential offer as well as design and modeling of various other buildings within the scheme.

The project represents Swire Properties’ first venture into the UK market. The property was subjected to a fierce bidding process and sold ultimately in the region of £120m.

Project Architect – Working closely with the practice chairman, I was responsible for all concept feasibility, design and presentation materials and running a small team to deliver complementary information.

Guangdong Province ± 60 – 70km from the capital - Guangzhou City, China Eurogreen Industrial Feasibility through to early scheme design £1.75m - 5500m2 The scheme involved the concept design of a highly energy efficient sustainable prototype of a salad factory, which will become a model for future developments in the area. In order to reduce the power consumption and provide a more sustainable building many passive energy saving devices have been employed. The main aim to naturally maintain lower temperatures in the building has been achieved by using the ancillary spaces as insulators to the cooled spaces as well as thermal banking to the North and East sides. A green roof was included, to provide excellent insulation to the main processing floor. This project was shortlisted for the MIPIM world innovation awards.

79-81 Brompton Road / 50 Hans Crescent Knightsbridge, London, United Kingdom Ropemaker Properties Mixed use - Offices & retail RIBA stages E to completion – duration 3-4 years £13m The Building which is next to Harrods and above the old Knightsbridge tube station entrance, is a mixed used scheme, which required façade retention in order to construct a new building comprising retail at basement to second floors with offices from the 3rd to 6th floors. The building is grade II listed.

Project Architect / contract administrator – all associated responsibilities e.g. chair site and client meetings, document control, issuing of all instructions RFI, COI etc, drawing package release and control, site visits and on site instructions, responsible for production information and the control of sub-contractor drawing information control. I started out as an assistant to the project architect but due to a contractual situation with regard to a large extension of time, I assumed the role of project Architect mid construction through to completion.

Sestroretsk (Near St. Petersburg), Russia Sestra River Developments Urban Design Feasibility to local authority planning submission Circa $150m – 14 hectares The project involved the regeneration and insertion of new urban fabric into a 14 hectare site comprising an existing redundant weapons factory. The factory has strong historical connections with Lenin who assumed the identity of “worker X” there in the lead up to the Russian revolution of 1917. The site contains a number of listed factory buildings, which required various levels of restoration and preservation, interspersed with new build insertions.

Project Architect / Design leader working directly with the partner-in-charge, Pedro Roos, a multiple award winning architect. During this project I was responsible for site analysis, concept design and all production materials. I also led a small team of staff to prepare a full and very detailed schematic package.

Tufnell Park, London, United Kingdom House on The Rock Faith – New build extension and restoration of exiting church RIBA stages A-E £4m This scheme proposes to return St. George’s Church, Tufnell Park, from a redundant theatre, to its original use as a place of worship, whilst accommodating the needs of the wider community. It comprises the refurbishment of the Grade II Listed building, including the reinstatement of ornamental leaded lights, and the construction of a new extension housing ancillary and community uses. Close consultation was undertaken with the community, local and statutory authorities.

Project Architect – I was responsible for the concept design and design development of the project through planning and the section 106 agreement.

Following this I was responsible for leading a team at the early part of stage E, until the building was occupied by squatters and the project put on hold.

Chelsea, London, United Kingdom Delta Land Residential - High value lateral flats and a terraced affordable housing component RIBA stages A-C (planning approval attained) £20m The project, located on the site of the former Chelsea College of Art and Design in the heart of Chelsea, provides 25 new residential units including 14 market value flats, 3 general needs houses, 6 affordable houses and 2 affordable flats. The design aims to reinstate the fabric of both Manresa Road and Dovehouse Street, which has been missing from the Kings Road end of these roads for many years. The flats were to achieve values in line with the 21 Manresa development by Candy and Candy opposite – circa £3500/sqf.

Project Architect – I was responsible for all client liaison design and leading a team to design and deliver the project to planning in a very short time scale, this was achieved and planning approved.

Wapping, London, United Kingdom Initially Deutsche Bank Property Development, later Ballymore Mixed use, predominantly Residential (flats) RIBA stages B to C Planning submission £50m+ - 31 400m2 The 0.75ha site fronts Wapping Lane and what remains of London’s Eastern Dock, adjacent to Tobacco Wharf Dock. The development proposes the demolition of an existing warehouse, and the construction of 311 new homes, together with commercial, community and retail space at ground floor. The sinuous building aligning the waterside to the North culminates in a dramatic, twisting twenty three storey tower, sheathed in transparent winter garden glass. The scheme is mixed in use with smallscale office and workshop units, community spaces and a local convenience store, as well as an integration of private and affordable housing with its associated parking.

Richmond Road, Kingston, United Kingdom Tide End Developments Residential (flats) RIBA stages A to C (Planning submission) – Consultation on stages E to completion £3m The scheme is located on a small site abutting a listed bingo hall near Kingston Town centre. The scheme demonstrates an innovative approach to restricted site conditions and accommodates 24 innovative ‘microflats’ in a car free scheme with ground floor retail unit. A major challenge was to provide family sized units as requested by the registered social landlord (RSL) as the affordable housing component.

Project Architect – I was responsible for all work on this scheme from feasibility to planning approval, including all client, planning authority and RSL liaison.

Salem Road, Queensway London, United Kingdom Meyer Bergman Residential Feasibility proposal N/A The site of Bonham Auctioneers in Queensway is a landlocked site neatly tucked away in the back areas of Queensway. The scheme proposal sets out ideas for the demolition of the Bonhams Warehouse and to make way for a clever insertion of series of town houses piggy-backed with duplex apartments.

These new town houses are proposed behind an early CZWG scheme, which will be retained and converted into studio apartments with mezzanine floors.

The site is highly restricted by setbacks, height restrictions, Rights of Light issues and is surrounded on all sides by mansion blocks and the backs of terraced houses. The scheme proposal cunningly creates privacy despite the issues of immediate adjacencies and without compromising light.

Yeoman’s Row Yeoman’s Row, Knightsbridge, London, United Kingdom James Cobbe Property development Residential (large terraced houses) RIBA stages A to C Planning submission £8m The row of 6 large terrace houses on a quiet street near the Brompton Road adjacent to some fine examples of art nouveau terraces, presented a contentious challenge with regard to neighbours and planning restrictions. The approved scheme represents a successful contemporary interpretation of the adjacent art nouveau properties. The value of the existing property more than quadrupled following approval with the result that it was the subject of a precedent setting court case for the exchange of property (see Yeoman’s Row Management Ltd vs. Jim Cobbe).

Assistant architect – working with the associate-in-charge I was responsible for all of the design work and planning drawings on the planning winning scheme.

Santa Chiara Hospital Site, Pisa Italy Comune Di Pisa Urban design Shortlisted selection competition 10 Hectares The international competition for the urban redevelopment of the University Hospital of Santa Chiara, The site of the project is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is located in the center of Pisa’s old town. The project covers the development of a consistent plan for the urban redevelopment, and the urban, landscaping and architectural enhancement of the area.

Role during project

Project Architect /Designer (representing PDP) - together with the partner-in-charge Pedro Roos, I was responsible for all concept and design exploration and leading a small team of architects at PDP in the development of the scheme. What gave this project extra interest, was the collaboration with Italian, French and German architects of note namely, Jean Pierre Buffi, Hans Kolhoff, Beniamino Cristofani.

The site required a fairly dense design to release value commensurate with the predicted offer on the property. The proposal includes residential hotel, office and retail offer in a new quarter, which would bring much needed uplift to this area of London.

Victoria Gardens, Notting Hill, London, United Kingdom Mount Street Property Development Residential Feasibility Study 0.173 Ha site This project involved the redevelopment of a portion of the former EDF site to the east side of Victoria Gardens. The project represents a feasibility study to facilitate the bid process for the purchase of the site for development. The site is a left over piece of land in the middle of a block, thus being under pressure from overlooking issues in particular the close proximity to adjacent neighbouring properties in Ladbroke Grove and Bulmer Mews. Together with restricted access and required setbacks as well as a maintained EDF demise made the scheme very tricky to work financially and in massing terms. The scheme proposes a small block of lateral flats as well as high quality 3 storey houses on a full site underground parking garage.

536 Kings Road, Chelsea, London, United Kingdom Axa Reim Residential with retail component Feasibility Study 2960m2 of existing office space listed as a major development site in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, these former headquarters of a book publishing company built in the 1970’s have been vacant for some time. PDP were asked to provide a feasibility study for the potential use of the site for the purposes of a bid to purchase the property. Our proposal included the demolition of the existing building and the construction of new high end residential units and a retail plinth. The site is now owned and being developed by CPC.

Ware, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom Ware Town Council Commercial, Leisure and entertainment Invited Competition N/A Set alongside the River Lea, Ware Priory was built in the 14th century as a Franciscan friary. In the 20th century it became a public building when gifted to Ware Town. The Priory is a grade I listed building and, with its parkland, is also a scheduled monument. The grounds are open to the public and include a playground, tennis courts and a lido. The site is situated within a conservation area and an area of archaeological signiďŹ cance. The competition consisted of 3 separate phases, which involved the creation of additional conference amenities to the priory, the redevelopment of the priory grounds into a new park and the redevelopment of the Priory Lido providing additional retail and F&B offers.

Project Architect / designer- I was responsible for the client liaison, assessment of brief, all discussions with planning authorities and all concept design and presentation materials. As part of the redevelopment of the park I attended a training course specifically aimed at applying for grants from the heritage Lottery fund for the renewal and creation of public parks.

The brief was for a new observatory to be located in the hills surrounding Kielder Village.

The new observatory is to take advantage of Kielder’s dark skies and lack of light pollution - users will include specialist and amateur astronomers, researchers, and small educational groups.

Core team member and designer - as a part of a bigger team I was responsible for the visualisations and graphic realization of the submission as well as being a mentor to the designer at the concept phase

I was also responsible for leading a small team to develop the early concept design package.

London, United Kingdom Retreat Development Mixed Use Feasibility 0.6 acre site 23 000m2 of development potential The property comprises Chiltern Street Car Park and the retail units at 22/28 Paddington Street occupying a total site area of 0.6 of an acre. The project involved the investigation of the development potential, in order to make a reasonable bid on the property. One of the conditions of the sale is that the public car park is rebuilt and the a council depot is constructed and leased back to the borough. Our proposal was to take advantage of the views to the adjacent parks whilst creating an exclusive address.
