Sinks that serve a double purpose............................. 4

A

couple of years ago, after I convinced my boyfriend to turn his backyard baseball field into a 100by-100 foot garden, I found that gourds will grow and multiply faster than they can be harvested. Since we have downsized the gardening space, gourds are no longer on the menu, but they are one of my favorite ways to decorate for the fall months. With each one being unique and colorful they are a great way to bring the outdoors in, whether they are growing in your own yard or you buy them at the grocery store. Read Mary Garrity’s decorating tips for fall on page 6. It’s been 25 years since I was in the market for buying things for a baby nursery. My niece, who is due any day, opened my eyes to a whole new world of baby equipment and decor. Things have really changed since the days of cloth diapers! Not only do they have warming units for wipes but a diaper genie helps the disposable diapers disappear and keep the room

smelling fresh. Nursery decor has come a long way as well and the sky’s the limit. Colors are no longer limited to just blue and pink, in fact, her colors are black, white and green. Read more about nursery decor on page 7. It seems as though everyone’s allergies have been worse than usual this year and I imagine it could be a result from so much rain and lots of heat which makes for a lot of mold. Even our dog has suffered from allergies. As we wait for a hard freeze to rid the outdoor allergy attack culprits it’s time to begin thinking about ways to make our indoor space allergy free. Read more on page 5. Fashion trends seem to come and go and then come back again and it’s no different with products and appliances. Vent-free gas appliances are making their way back on the scene as energy savers. From gas stoves to fireplaces they will save energy assumption as well as provide you and your family with guaranteed heat

if you should lose electricity from downed power lines. Read more on page 14. Our feature story this week is on two sisters who have not only teamed up together but have recruited some top-notch agents to be part of The Clemons Home Team. The Clemons Home Team, with two offices in Liberty and Independence bring a positive attitude, knowledge and expertise to the table when dealing with real estate transactions. Read their story on pages 10 and 11. A very special event is taking place in Blue Springs September 30 through October 3. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial - a replica of The Wall That Heals, will be in Pink Hill Park for four days. All Vietnam veterans visiting The Wall will receive a medal and there will be exhibits on the history of the Vietnam War. Thanks for stopping by,

Cool ‘entertainment’ sinks

Q

My husband and I both enjoy talking about plumbing since we have become regular readers of your column. The other night we were at a private event in a very nice clubhouse and we noticed a beautiful round sink that appeared to have a custom thick block of ice completely filling the sink. Incorporated in the custom ice block were three large holes with a wine bottle in each hole. It was a very functional and beautiful display, and my husband and I both fell

in love with the sink. What type of sink is this and where do you get the ice blocks, and how much do these sinks cost? -- Carol and John, Tennessee You and your husband have good taste. You fell in love with one of my favorite sinks. The type of sink you describe is called an “entertainment” sink. Entertainment sinks are usually specially shaped sinks that come with plenty of accessories like cutting boards, draining racks and custom ice molds.

A

The type I’m most familiar with is referred to as a “Cordial.” It’s a 22-inch round cast-iron sink, with a thick rim that mounts on top of the counter. These sinks are allin-one entertainment centers perfect for washing wine and beer glasses and staging drinks with the pouring trays, preparing garnishes with the cutting board and creating custom ice blocks with the factory-made ice molds specific for each sink. All you do is fill the ice mold with water, put it in the freezer overnight, then pop out the ice block and put it in the sink. It’s as easy as that to impress your guests with a chilled-wine-bottle display that everyone

will talk about. So that takes care of two of your three questions (type and ice-block information); now for the price question. The good news is that entertainment sinks usually come in a complete package with all the sink accessories. However, in most cases the faucet is not included. The bad news is that they are high-end items when it comes to sinks, and prices can start at just under $600. You do have an advantage in that your husband wants the sink as well. Maybe this can make a special anniversary gift? What says “I love you” more than a sink you both love?

Tips for winterizing your home against indoor allergies

S

pring and fall are the most notorious allergy seasons, but as any of the estimated 50 million Americans who suffer from allergies know, winter can be just as uncomfortable. To make sure that your home is a healthy one throughout the season, start taking action against allergens as you winterize your house. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), some of the most common indoor allergens are mold spores, dust mites and pet dander - so pay special attention to preventing those. As the weeks pass, keep to a schedule of cleaning that will maintain a lower level of allergens. Here are some tips to help make your allergy sufferers more comfortable: • Don’t let towels pile up. Whether in the kitchen or the bathroom, it’s important that damp towels aren’t left to sit in a pile. The moisture they retain can create perfect conditions for growing mold or provide an ideal home for mites. Hang towels so that they can dry fully and launder them in your washing machine at least once a week to get rid of mold spores. • Stop the fur from flying. AAFA notes that cat dander is the most common pet allergy. But whether you have a dog, cat or

other furry critter, they can cause discomfort for any members of your household with allergies, as well for any guests who come to town for holiday celebrations. To cut down on allergens from both dander and saliva, be sure to wash your pets’ toys and beds regularly. • Make your bed and sleep in it. If your sleep is being disrupted by allergy symptoms, you need to make sure that your bedding isn’t part of the problem. Miteproof bedding and mattress or pillow cases can help cut allergens, but you should also remember that washing, cleaning and replacement are important. Pillows should be replaced every two years and it’s suggested that mattresses be replaced every 10 years. • Don’t forget decor. Vacuuming your floors is a given, but to really make an impact on the allergens in your home, you need to pay attention the rest of your decor as well. Area rugs in the living room or bedrooms, as well as kitchen and bath floor mats need to be vacuumed often and, if possible, laundered regularly. Cleaning the upholstery on your couches and chairs is another essential step - pet hair and dust mites can settle there and irritate people with allergies.

Gourds for your fall decor

T

o bring a subdued but sophisticated fall touch to a side table, start with a weathered white capital riser. Blanket it with moss and place a pumpkinshaped white gourd on top. Then finish off the look with a glass cloche. If you’re having guests over for dinner this fall, make it a “white pumpkin” affair. Start with a black-and-white damask or plaid tablecloth. Use silver trays as chargers below gold- or silver-rimmed china. Place a black iron urn at the table’s center filled with twigs, gold-misted grape leaves and clusters, and white gourds. Then create an interesting multilevel tableau with mercury glass candlesticks, clear glass cake

plates and silver trophy cups, all topped with white gourds. I admire the way Mother Nature mixes colors willy-nilly. You can do the same in fall tableaus by tossing together a variety of gourds. Create a memorable display on a side table by filling a decorative wheelbarrow with a harvest of green, white, yellow, orange and red pumpkins. Or place a large pumpkin, garden statue or gazing ball in the center of a mini concrete birdbath and surround it with assorted gourds. To add grace to your dining-room buffet or a console table in your entry, put matching blue-and-white Asian ginger jars on each end. Fill them with a bouquet of fall fo-

liage and gourds, resting additional gourds and pumpkins randomly at the base of each jar. Freshen up your mantel with an undulating phalanx of pumpkins and gourds of different sizes, shapes and colors. Give a few gourds added height atop candlesticks or votive cups. Gourds are so much fun that they just scream to be used in quirky, unexpected ways in home decor. Once I hollowed out gourds to use as soup bowls at a fall fete in my garden. To keep the soup warm in the chilly autumn air, I served the gourd bowls on small concrete risers topped with glass cloches. Hollow out a tall pumpkin and fill it with fresh veggies like asparagus spears or carrot sticks. Try the same trick with a short pumpkin, filling it with dip. Shave off the top of a squat pumpkin to make it level, then use it to hold serving trays filled with seasonal fruits or cups of steaming cider. Place candles in small, hollowed-out gourds or use mini pumpkins as place-card holders. I also like to use faux pumpkins on my dining table to delight guests. How about resting a squat squash inside a soup tureen to be uncovered by an unsuspecting diner?

Creating a modern nursery

C

reating a vibrant and safe space for your offspring doesn’t have to be complicated. Get a load of these simple ways to welcome the newest addition to your family in style. 1. Strive for simplicity. Start with a pared-down look and use subdued colors for the walls, floor and major furniture pieces. 2. Add in pops of bright color. If you like, accent a neutral backdrop with surprising flashes of bold hues. 3. Keep it gender-neutral. Stereotypes (pink and blue) are quite old-fashioned, and the more neutral a nursery’s contents, the more likely you’ll be able to make use of it for a little brother or sister who shows up down the line. 4. Aim for adaptability. In the nursery, “modern” often means “multifunctional” and “multistage.” So look for pieces that serve more than one purpose, that will grow with your child or that can be put to use in another room later on. 5. Be space-savvy. Some of the most chic baby furniture comes from Europe, where manufacturers are well-versed in designing for small spaces. If square footage is at a premium in your home, look for

streamlined pieces with compact footprints and clever built-in storage. 6. Make it mobile. Whenever possible, opt for furniture on casters for easy rearranging, pieces that can be reconfigured as your and your child’s needs evolve (changing tables that morph into media stands, for instance), interactive art (such as “wallies” that can be moved from spot to spot) and reversible textiles that can be flipped on a whim. 7. Keep it child-centered. Easyto-grasp door cutouts on cabinets instead of hard-to-clasp knobs, for instance, or cubbies rather than heavy drawers, will make your child feel at home. 8. Avoid themes. Better to wait for your child’s own passions to develop on their own. 9. Leave room for imagination. A lighted globe becomes a charming nightlight (and later, a virtual launching point for imaginary expeditions). A grid pattern on an area rug becomes a busy thoroughfare for toy vehicles to transverse. 10. Don’t blow the budget. Invest in one or two to-die-for items that will grow with your child, and furnish the rest of the room with simple basics that can work with

a variety of schemes. 11. Create a room you adore. The nursery should reflect your lifestyle

and your home. So make a statement and have fun.

Hanging art like the pros By Tamara Browning

GateHouse News Service

I

f you want to display artwork in your home like the pros, they have a suggestion for you: Do what you want aesthetically. “Let’s not be so serious about it,” says Deea Meek, who with her husband, Sean, owns Eclectic Artists Co-op & Gallery in Jacksonville, Ill. “Do what you love.” And it’s probably a good idea to do something - meaning, having art in your home. “I am more struck by walking into people’s houses who have no art on their walls at all,” says Betsy Dollar, executive director for the Springfield (Ill.) Art Association. “I’m always like, how can you live like this?’ It’s amazing to me how many people have bare walls.’” If you can’t fight the uneasy feeling about having artistic freedom when it comes to displaying artwork, Dollar, Deea and her mother-in-law, Trina Meek (who helps out at the Eclectic), offer guidelines. LOOK NOW, BUY LATER: Newbies to

buying artwork should begin looking in art galleries. “A large number of people are scared to death to walk into a gallery because it’s just something that’s so unfamiliar to them. Just walk in. Look around. See what catches your eye,” Dollar says. BUY WHAT YOU LOVE: Some people are terrified to buy art because they think they don’t know what to buy, Dollar says. “So they just kind of ignore it. My answer to that is you can’t really make a mistake if you like the piece,” Dollar says. Deea suggests that people don’t shop for art based on what will “match their curtains.” FRAME IN A COMPLEMENTARY WAY: “Sometimes, people get really carried away with decoratively cut mats and many different colors of mats and then a really ornate frame, and it’s like, is there a work of art in there?’ “ Dollar says. Find molding that complements the piece. Don’t get carried away with a variety of colors. “There’s that sort of home decor concept that you have to get real elaborate with your framing. You don’t have to,” Dollar says. You can “go crazy” with color matting and interesting cuts in mats for art in kids’ rooms, “where we’re not talking important works of art. We’re talking something fun that complements the decor,” Dollar says.

Vent-free gas products can help save money, energy

A

s winter approaches and you reach for the thermostat, you might be thinking of ways to save money and energy. Installing an environmentally friendly vent-free gas product could do both. Vent-free gas appliances - such as wall heaters, logs, stoves, inserts, and fireplaces - are modern, cost-effective, and easy to install. Because they require no chimney or vent, vent-free gas systems are less expensive, and quicker and easier to install than other types of gas zone heating systems. These products provide supplemental heat to complement your home’s existing central furnace or heat pump, improving energy efficiency and providing tremendous comfort and ambiance. A great way to use a vent-free gas product is for zone heating, which allows you to turn down your home’s central heat system and focus the heat from a vent-free gas unit in the rooms your family uses most often. This can save precious energy dollars - more than 20 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy - compared to maximizing the heat in both occupied and vacant rooms in your home. In addition to zone heating to reduce

energy costs, vent-free gas appliances are very economical. They operate at 99 per-

cent efficiency - delivering 99 cents worth of heat for every dollar of energy cost.

Environmentally friendly vent-free appliances are fueled with natural gas or propane, among the cleanest of all fossil fuels, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Both gases are domestically abundant and are secure sources of energy. In addition to a clean, green output, vent-free gas products don’t generate hazardous waste when they’re manufactured. When winter weather hits your neighborhood and puts your power supply at risk, you can be assured of having a reliable, efficient heat source with a vent-free gas product. That’s because these systems require no electricity, so they will continue to provide reliable heat even when the electricity is interrupted. In addition to saving money and energy, vent-free gas products have a remarkable safety record. These products have been available to consumers for more than 30 years, with more than 20 million units sold. As with any gas appliance, proper installation, basic care and regular maintenance are required. You can learn more about vent-free gas appliances at www.ventfree.org.

RIVERTON: Beautiful architecture, grand living

F

orward thinking design, stunning architecture and an open, inviting living space are all hallmarks of the Riverton plan. Designed for empty nesters and families alike, the Riverton is a reverse ranch plan with bedrooms and living areas on both the main floor and the lower level. The reverse ranch puts a new spin on the more traditional one and one half story plan, with a bedroom on the main floor and two or three more bedrooms on the upper level. Instead, the reverse ranch moves those extra bedrooms to the lower level creating a more open and dramatic main floor living area. The Riverton plan is a show stopper by any definition. The dramatic stucco front exterior tastefully joins gables together with hip roofs, large arched windows and a soaring covered entry to create an inviting and welcoming abode. The three-car garage with carriage style doors is perfect for homeowners that need a little extra space. Step inside the front entry and homeowners and guests alike are greeted with high vaulted ceilings and a great view of the open floor plan. A generously sized dining room lies to the left and straight ahead a spacious great room features built-ins on either side of the fireplace and large floor to ceiling windows that shower the room with natural light. The kitchen, with its fabulous work island, abundance of counter space and a convenient walk-in pantry, is a chef’s dream and the perfect place to host parties and family gatherings. The owner’s suite, also located on the main floor, has a row of windows along the back wall and a vaulted ceiling with light tray. A private spa bath serves the owner’s suite and boasts in demand features including a double sink vanity, whirlpool bathtub, copious walk-in tiled shower with dual shower heads and private water closet. The owner’s suite closet features an abundance of shelving and hanging space. Also located on the main level is a mud room off the garage with coat closet and a bench with coat hooks, as well as, another bedroom with bath and closet.

If you’re looking for a retreat; look no further then the lower level of the Riverton. The plan is complete with a substantial recreation room, perfect for a pool table and home theatre, complete with a nice bar to serve up guests with all of their favorite libations. In addition, the lower level offers homeowners two additional bedrooms with walk-in closets, a full bath and plenty of unfinished storage helping to keep clutter out of the living areas and put away where it belongs.

The Riverton is built in the Kansas City metro area by Jackson County’s number one single family home builder, Summit Custom Homes, LLC. For more information on building the Riverton either on your lot or in one of the communities Summit Custom Homes is currently building in, please contact them at 816-246-6700, or visit their website at www.summitcustomhomeskc.com.

Pretty Good Ideas Americans wising up about credit cards

Americans seem to be learning their lesson when it comes to using credit cards wisely, two new studies indicate. The average American has fewer credit cards, is relying on them less, and is trying to pay down their debt – which, in many metropolitan areas, still exceeds the national average. But while many urbanites may have more debt than average, they’re also making strides toward using their credit wisely. Here are some tips to help manage your credit: n Pay bills on time. If you have an overdue bill, an unpaid debt or a tax lien, pay it off. n Use your credit cards responsibly to demonstrate that you can manage credit well, but keep balances low on all your cards and revolving credit. n Review your credit report 60 to 90 days before making a major purchase. Do not open or close accounts, but concentrate on paying down balances. n Pay off debt rather than moving it around. Also, do not close unused cards as a short-term strategy to improve your credit score. Owing the same amount but having fewer open accounts may lower your utilization ratios and your credit scores. To learn more about managing credit, visit www.experian.com/crediteducation.

tips&tricks

Keep the garden growing

The vibrant colors and bountiful harvests of summer fade into fall, but incorporating a few simple ideas can ensure the beauty of your garden lasts well into the autumn. Begin by adding colorful plants like mums and ornamental kale that will grow through the coming months. Fall weather is ideal for planting trees and shrubs - insert long-lasting tree spikes into the soil now for winter feeding. It’s also a great time to plant edibles: lettuces, broccoli and other quick-growing, cold-tolerant vegetables can still thrive in the temperatures of the fall. Lastly, planting daffodil, hyacinth and tulip bulbs now will ensure a vibrant spring.

Create comfy ’school zone’ for studying With the arrival of the new school year, now is the perfect time to “zone out” – by creating a comfortable, yet functional study zone in your home. It’s important for your child’s study zone to be comfortable. Keep your study zone (and the rest of your home) comfy throughout the year with a Heritage Heat Pump from American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning. A heat pump does the job of an air conditioner and a furnace, and can be paired with indoor electric or gas heat, which means it will keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. However, if the zone is too cozy, your child may be tempted to snooze or get distracted instead of doing his schoolwork. This means no lounging on the bed to do homework. Equip your study zone with a table or desk and a chair to ensure your child is upright and focused.
