In many cases, the pediatric subspecialists who are on the medical staff at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics are the only specialists of their type in the metro area. And now some of the most-requested of those specialty services are available for outpatient clinic visits at Children’s Mercy East. Children’s Mercy East offers pediatric subspecialty clinics in: • Cardiology • ENT • Endocrinology/Diabetes

• Gastroenterology • Hearing and Speech • Neurology

• Orthopaedics • Rehabilitation • Sports Medicine

Additional clinics and services are planned for the future. In addition to these clinics, Children’s Mercy East offers radiology and laboratory services. Radiology services include X-ray from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, and ultrasound 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Plans call for full pediatric imaging services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to be added in the future. The laboratory provides services in support of the clinics and urgent care, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday noon to 10 p.m. Patients can also be referred for lab testing, including chemistry tests such as glucose, bilirubin, and liver function, CBC and other hematology tests, urinalysis, and rapid infectious disease testing for strep and mononucleosis. Samples may also be collected for additional testing at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Last year, nearly 23,000 children from the Eastern Jackson County corridor used Children’s Mercy services. Now, for those children and many other Eastern Jackson County families, the innovative, family-centered specialty care for which Children’s Mercy is nationally recognized is now available much closer to home.

Urgent care when you need it most The Edward G. and Kathryn E. Mader Urgent Care Center at Children’s Mercy East treats children who have minor injuries or illnesses that are not considered life threatening, but require prompt attention. Open from noon to 10 p.m. seven days a week it’s a smart alternative when your child’s primary care provider is unavailable. In fact, we work directly with many area pediatricians to keep them informed of any care their patients receive. We also offer X-ray on site as well as select lab testing, including rapid strep, mono, influenza, RSV, glucose, hemoglobin and urinalysis. Patients are seen on a walk-in basis. “The role of urgent care is to provide some services—such as X-rays, splinting, breathing treatments and lab testing— not offered through primary care, as well as to offer care when primary care offices are closed,” says Tom Tryon, MD, Urgent Care Associate Division Director. “Urgent care centers do not provide continuity of care for chronic diseases, wellchild checkups, sports physicals or routine immunizations. We encourage parents to develop a relationship with a primary care provider who can administer these services.”

When to choose urgent care The Edward G. and Kathryn E. Mader Urgent Care Center at Children’s Mercy East is open daily from noon to 10 p.m. for any child requiring prompt medical attention, including: • Stomach aches, vomiting or diarrhea • Mild allergic reactions

• Minor cuts and burns • Simple fractures • Strains and sprains

• Sinus problems and minor respiratory conditions • Seasonal illnesses

Our high level of care is based on more than the extensive pediatric training of our staff. Our doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals are at the forefront of improving how pediatric medicine is practiced here and around the world. For example, our Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine, recently announced a breakthrough in the use of genome testing that can help diagnose diseases in children in a few days instead of six weeks or more. Speed of diagnosis can be critical in situations such as those that happen in a neonatal intensive care unit where medical decision-making is made in hours not weeks. Our world renowned pediatric clinical pharmacology program is the largest in North America and is a leader in making medicine for children safer and more effective. Working with specialists throughout the hospital, our physicians and scientists are testing new treatments and

helping reformulate medicines to fight cancer, juvenile arthritis, kidney disease, asthma and other illnesses. And our nurses are not only highly skilled clinicians, but leaders in quality improvement and safety. Children’s Mercy was the first hospital in the country to have more than 500 pediatric certified nurses and we were recently honored by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for the third time with Magnet® recognition for excellence in nursing services. Of course, children’s medicine isn’t just about the hospital staff and programs.
