Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival kicks off Sept. 14 By Examiner staff

With all of the planning completed, this year’s organizers of the Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival are hoping that once again, the community will love what there is to see and do. “This is my first year with the Fall Fun Festival. I have been to it many times in the past and have directed Santa-CaliGon Days, but this is my first year directing this festival,” said Sue McMilian, special events coordinator for the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce. “I think Blue Springs really supports its businesses. It’s all about getting neighbors involved and supporting community events like the festival.” The Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival kicks off Sept. 14 in downtown Blue Springs and runs through Sept. 16. Malena Marcase, winner of the 2012

Sing! Blue Springs Competition will perform at 7 p.m. Friday followed by the Wing Eating Contest, sponsored by Wing Stop in Blue Springs. The karaoke finals will be from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, also on the Mavericks community stage. This competition will include the finalists that have moved on from previous rounds held over the last few months. Also coming back is the Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament sponsored by Side Pockets. The event is from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16 in the County Beverage Beer Garden. Individuals can register online at the festival’s website, www.bluespringsfallfestival.com or by 12:30 p.m. the day of the tournament. Player acceptance is based on what space is available. Players must be at least 21-years-old and $35 per player is required at registration. There will also be $10 buy-ins the first hour.

The fee includes entry into the tournament, a beverage and snack. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three places per session, including a $500 Grand Prize. A portion of all fees or sponsorships will be donated to the Blue Springs Community Services League. The County Beverage Beer Garden, co-sponsored by St. Mary’s Medical Center, is open from 4 p.m. to midnight Sept. 14, 4 p.m. to midnight Sept. 15 and noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 16. Happy Hour is from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday as well. During Happy Hour, there is no entrance fee and all Budweiser Beer and Lime-a-Ritas and soft drinks are on sale. For families, a children’s play area will be located at 8th and Main Street, along the east side of the festival. The area will include inflatables, a petting zoo, exotic animal display, camel and pony

rides and games. On the west side of the festival, the traditional carnival will be operating. The carnival, at the corner of 12th and Main Streets, will be open from noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 14, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 15 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 16. For those who do not want to find a parking spot or pay to park in one of the commercial lots, the festival will once again be offering a free shuttle service throughout the festival weekend. There are two pick-up locations - White Oak Shopping Center and the parking lot south of Office Depot. Drop-off will be around the Missouri 7 and Main St. intersection. Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest 2012

The Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival parade is one of the highlights every year and 2012 seems to be no different. The parade is at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 and winds through the streets of central Blue Springs. Eastern Jackson County’s largest parade, it attracts approximately 20,000 people each year. “I think it’s the parade’s reputation that draws a lot of attention and helps it continue to be the huge attraction it is,” said Sue McMilian, special events coordinator for the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce. “The variety of floats, bands and costumes attracts the community to the parade. The fact that we have such great high school bands draws a lot of families to the parade route.” The theme of this year’s parade is “Peace, Love and Rock n’ Roll.” It coincides with the chamber celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. There are more than 100 entries this year

include the Blue Springs and Blue Springs South high school marching bands, a variety of community organizations and dance groups. The parade begins at 15th and Vesper Streets, ending at St. John LaLande Catholic Church. Parents should take Missouri 7 and turn west on Hearnes Street. Turn south on Range Street to enter the church’s parking lot where they can pick up their children who were in the parade. Those watching the parade can line up and sit anywhere along the parade route. As in the past, many groups will be handing out candy to the children. Blue Springs residents should be aware that roads will be closed throughout much of Saturday morning for the parade and should plan accordingly. Awards will be given out to several categories. These include commercial vehicle or float, noncommercial vehicle or float, float pulled by a vehicle and walking units. First and second place will be given in each category.

From Alaska to Hawaii… and everywhere in between.

Each year, the Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival draws thousands of individuals who come to eat good food, hear music or shop the variety of vendors. This year, attendees will be able to take a small part of the festival home with them for the first time - a Blue Springs Fall Fun festival T-shirt. In the festival’s history, T-shirts have never been offered said Sue McMilian, special events coordinator for the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce. “We thought that with the chamber celebrating its 50th anniversary, we wanted to incorporate the parade theme as ‘Peace, Love and Rock n’

Roll,’” she said. “Then the orange tie-dye T-shirt developed from there. We haven’t done one before here, so it was a great opportunity.” The T-shirts are $15 for S to XL and $17 for XXL and XXXL. They can be purchased at either the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce Office, 1000 W. Main St. in Blue Springs or on the festival’s website at www.bluespringsfallfestival.com. “I think it’s a groovy T-shirt and the orange tie dye really makes it pop,” McMilian said. “We have had a good response so far. People have come into the chamber on other business and many leave with a T-shirt. I think its a great addition to the festival.”

Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest 2012

Jenifer Witzke, CommunityAmerica Credit Union As an employee in Blue Springs and a fellow chamber member, I have truly enjoyed my experience with the Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival. I joined the committee in April 2007, after opening my first CommunityAmerica Credit Union branch at the Blue Springs Hy-Vee. My plan going into the first meeting was to mingle with a few chamber members and volunteer a couple of hours of service. Well, it’s now been five years, and I am currently vice co-chair of the committee. Needless to say, after one meeting with this committee I was ecstatic about getting more involved. The festival is an extraordinary event that showcases amazing talent and people in the city of Blue Springs. All festivities are supported by non-paid volunteers who live and work in the community, many spending countless hours working to make the festival, chamber and city a success. I am grateful to be part of such a great event and look forward to actively participating in years to come. Rachel Hummel, MCPower Company Rachel Hummel with MCPower Company is the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce secretary/treasurer as well as one of the festival’s chairmen. Hummel has been involved with the chamber since 2008. Hummel said she welcomes everyone to the annual Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival and gives a big thank you to sponsors and volunteers both past and present. She said organizers could not make it such a success without their support. A special thanks, she said, goes to Blue Springs Christian Church for keeping the festival free from trash and debris. This is an incredible service that they provide for the festival, she said. The festival celebrates the growth and community spirit in Blue Springs. This year, the chamber is recognizing 50 years of the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce with

its parade theme “Peace, Love and Rock n’ Roll.” New this year is a collectible-themed festival T-shirt, and in the beer garden, the festival can koozie. With limited quantities available, visitors won’t want to miss the opportunity to start a collection. Sizes will go fast. With a crowd of more than 100,000 in attendance, visitors are sure to see someone they know and meet new friends at the parade, in the carnival area, along the Main Street shopping vendor booths or with downtown merchants that are open during the festival weekend. The festival is great free, family fun for all ages. The Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival promotes and supports many local not-forprofit organizations. One in particular is the Community Services League. Each year a check is presented to the local group for tips collected at the beer garden, such a great way to give back to our community while having a good time. Another new addition is the “Chill Zone,” sponsored by Centerpoint Urgent Care of Blue Springs. It is being manned by Midwest Regional Core Volunteers to assist festival attendees with minor bumps and bruises. Did you know that September is National Emergency Preparedness Month? Stop by 10th and Main streets to check out the Blue Springs Central Jackson County Emergency Management Agency, Community Emergency Response Team booth and trailer. All residents should know what to do in case of an emergency in our area and these folks are ready to show and tell. Also nearby will be the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District crew to answer any questions and show the kids the fire equipment on the truck. In addition to the CERT group, the festival has the Blue Springs Police Department Citizens Police Academy and Volunteers in Police Services on the festival grounds, providing child identification kits at no charge. Make sure to stop by their booth on Main Street to get your kids fingerprinted and photographed. The chamber hopes everyone enjoys what the festival has to offer and thanks everyone for supporting the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce and the Blue Springs community.

Main Stage talent Friday and Saturday night

6 Degrees West Taken from 6 Degrees West’s website, www.6degreeswest.com/#/bionews/4565065890:

6 Degrees West is an explosive country music act with dueling guitars and four part harmonies. The band, deriving its name from “six degrees of separation” in the music business, was founded by lead singer Tim Pardee in late 2008. Tim had a vision to put together a group of talented musicians that would create an unique sound, along with an electrifying stage performance. Early on, Tim brought on lead guitar player, Bill Mears. Bill came from a background of great classic rock and roll. Hailing from Chicago, Bill brought a keen style of guitar playing along with a great voice made from creating rich harmonies. Bill’s sense of “cool” on-stage makes for a highly entertaining performance. Tim later met Ray Santo, a native of Boston, who has toured and recorded nationally and been recognized as one of the top drummers in the Midwest region. Tim quickly realized that the band needed Ray to bring a strong backbone and additional vocal to the group. With his professional background and experience in country music, Ray quickly took 6 Degrees West to another level of performance. The next piece is when the band turned on to a prodigy guitar player that was looking for a group with vision. Enter Clayton Delong. Clayton brings flavor to the group’s sound with his tasteful locks and guitar knowledge. Clayton is the definition of Nashville Picker and proves it each time he hits the stage.

Pieces of Jake

From Pieces of Jake’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/PiecesOfJake:

Pieces of Jake is Kansas City’s finest alternative/funk/rock party band for over 15 years. Although we are often “under” the influence, it’s hard to pin down who makes our musical juices flow. POJ is an eclectic bunch of guys with roots in R&B, Funk, Rock, Alternative, Party, Metal and Contemporary Country (yeah right). But mainly, we’re influenced by you. We still do this band thing because you all will still come hear us, that makes us all warm and fuzzy inside.

The latest addition to 6 Degrees West was when the band auditioned Shannon Pearce. This multi instrumentalist wowed the band with his ability to create that deep tone within the rhythm section. Shannon’s smooth bass playing and vocal persona stand out on stage with his extreme energy and infectious personality. Since putting this group of talented players in place, the band has seen a rise in success. Their single, “She Got Me There,” has been well received by country radio and continues to build interest. Their latest single and titled EP, “BOWCHICKAWOWOW,” has left radio DJs and audiences wanting more. 6 Degrees West has performed with some of country music’s hottest acts including Zac Brown Band, Eli Young Band, Gloriana, Blake Shelton, Kenney Chesney, Rodney Atkins, Justin Moore, Locash Cowboys and many more. The band has been invited to play some of the nation’s best stages. “We owe everything to our fans. Without country music fans, we would not have the opportunity to do what we do. Country music has the best fans in all of music. Our band has been blessed to meet so many great people on stage and off stage. We look forward to many more great times and meeting many new faces.” 6 Degrees West performs at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 14 on the Main Stage, 11th and Smith Streets. The stage is inside the County Beverage Beer Garden. However, limited free seating is available outside the gated Beer garden. Those who want to watch the concert from inside must be 21-years-old and pay a $4 cover charge after 6 p.m. “POJ plays the best set of cover tunes around, from Stevie Wonder, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pink Floyd, J. Geils and Joe Cocker to brand-new stuff from Seether, Theory of a Deadman, Weezer, Buck Cherry, Queensryche and Alice in Chains. “There is something for everybody. Nothing for anybody.” Pieces of Jake performs at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15 on the Main Stage, 11th and Smith Streets. The stage is inside the County Beverage Beer Garden. However, limited free seating is available outside the gated Beer garden. Those who want to watch the concert from inside must be 21-years-old and pay a $4 cover charge after 6 p.m.
