The Story of Aland

Aland was a curious, quiet, shy robot. It didn’t always say exactly what it felt, and it often felt uncomfortable speaking in front of people. Sometimes, it found it hard to find the words; sometimes, it found it difficult to make certain sounds; sometimes, it stammered. One day, Aland was watching Robot TV and saw a robot just like it, so similar in many ways, standing up proudly at a podium and speaking out. The words and story were simple and clear and people were really listening. The TV robot spoke using words, facial expressions and hand gestures. People cared; the audience was clapping. Aland could imagine how wonderful that robot must feel, to be able to say what you want, when you want and how you want, in a way that makes people really hear you. Aland had a story to share, and feelings, thoughts and amazing ideas to share too. Aland wondered, “What can I do about this?” And so, a decision was made that day, a small decision that would make an enormous difference in Aland’s life.

4

E L P

M A S

The answer became clear ...

When we want to become a better musician, we learn the skills and practise. When we want to become a better dancer, we learn the skills and practise. Aland wanted to become a better speaker, so, BINGO! Aland decided to learn the skills and practise. Aland would go on a magical speaking journey and gather all the tools and techniques it could, put them in its tool box and take them out to use whenever it needed them. This would help Aland prepare for any and every speaking opportunity that would come its way. Aland has become better and better at speaking up and speaking out. Now it’s time for Aland to play around with all the skills it has already gained and add more to its skill set. Aland knew deep inside that it was Able. “LET’S GO, ALAND! LET’s Stand!”

SPEAKER’S STORY Start your journey by getting inspired by two amazing speakers and their life stories. Read each story, and at the end complete the activity. You can also share the stories with your friends and family to help get you into that public speaking mindset!

Greta Thunberg

E L P

A fighter for our planet

M A S

Greta Thunberg was born in January 2003; her mother is an opera singer and both her father and grandfather are actors. Greta started to learn about climate change when she was only 8 years old and she couldn’t understand why people weren’t doing more about it. So, instead of waiting for other people, she decided to do something about it herself!

In August 2018, instead of going to school,* Greta made a big sign that said ‘SCHOOL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE’, and sat down outside the government buildings in Sweden, where she lives. It was Greta’s way of getting noticed by politicians so that they would take action to stop global warming. Her plan worked and word spread about what she was doing, and soon many thousands of students from around the world were making their own signs and making their own voices heard. Greta has Asperger syndrome, which means that she sees the world a little differently. Greta sees this as a good thing, she calls it her “superpower”! Since a very young age, she has been giving speeches, appeared in documentaries and had lots of books and articles written about her. To be kinder to the planet, Greta does not fly, and in August 2019 she travelled all the way from England to New York in a boat that was powered by the sun and wind! 8

‘LET’s stand | Groundwork

* We don’t want you to do this! There are lots of ways to fight climate change both in and out of school.

Today, Greta is still using her voice to fight for a better and healthier planet for all of us.

ACTIVITY

Why do you think that flying is not good for our planet?

Can you name three things you can do that help the environment? 1.

SPEAKER’S STORY

Mattie Stepanek Poet and peacemaker

E L P

M A S

Mattie was a very special and brave boy. He was kind, funny and smart. He had two brothers, Stevie and Jamie, and one sister, Katie. When he was born, he was very sick, and the doctors said he wouldn’t walk, talk, or think like a typical child, but Mattie went on to prove them wrong. Although his body was weak, his spirit and mind were very strong. Mattie needed a machine to help him breathe and so it was always important to him to make every breath count.

He started to write poems at age 3, and his mother quickly noticed that this was one of Mattie’s many special gifts. Caring and kind, he was a brilliant poet. He named his first collection of poetry “Heartsongs”, a word he made up himself. Mattie knew that everybody has a “heartsong”. He said, “your heartsong can be your message; it’s what you feel you need to do.” Following the terrible events of 9/11 in New York, Mattie, then 10 years old, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary gift, travelled across America and used every breath he had to share his message of peace with millions. Mattie’s favourite colour was the sunset — “orange, purple, with a tinge of bright pink.” One of his favourite things to do was to wheel himself out onto the pier and watch a sunset.

10

‘LET’s stand | Groundwork

“A heartsong doesn’t have to be a song, it can be your message, your feeling.”

Mattie didn’t choose to be sick. HOWEVER! He did choose: • To be grateful and to make a list every day of the things that he could choose. • To travel around America when it was very hard for him, bringing his poems and messages of hope and peace to lots of people. • To speak up to the Government in America for the rights of children with special needs.

E L P

• To wheel himself out onto the pier and watch the sunrise every chance he got.

M A S

Although Mattie is no longer with us, he packed so much into his short life and his voice reached millions of people. Today, in a town called Rockville, where he grew up, there is a park named after Mattie; it has a playground and picnic areas and in the centre is a ‘Peace Garden’, where people can read and listen to messages of hope and inspiration from Mattie. There is even a life-size statue of Mattie with his dog, Micah the Peace Puppy.

ACTIVITY What was the title of Mattie’s first book of poems?

What did you learn from Mattie?

PUBLIC SPEAKING is NOT new to me. I already speak in public when:

I speak to my family and friends

I speak to people in the community

E L P

I speak during meals

I tell my classmates about things I love, what makes me special

I use technology to make video or phone calls

I share my ideas and learning in class

M A S

I can learn skills that will help me do this really well. I can become a really cool, clear and confident communicator! This is EXCITING! 12

I AM ABLE.

I make a difference. Visualise yourself standing up to speak in front of an audience that are looking forward to hearing you speak and want you to do well. Everybody in the audience wants the best for you!

E L P

M A S

To affirm is to to state something positively or with confidence. These affirmations are short statements that you can read whenever you want to remind yourself of just how amazing you are!

14

I have a unique voice.

I am kind.

My voice can inspire / entertain / inform / comfort.

I am perfect just the way I am.

I have something to say that only I can share.

I matter and what I have to offer the world matters.

I am strong.

I am forgiving.

I am unique.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn.

In a world where I can be anything, I will be myself.

I trust myself.

What is your key message?

Three reasons / points relating to your key message

“And that is why ....” Repeat key message

For example:

INSTANT SPEECH: The Coolest Job in the World

What is your key message? The coolest job in the world would be to be an ‘imagineer’.

Three reasons / points relating to your key message 1

I heard that it is ‘imagineers’ that create the structures in Disneyland and theme parks.

2

They get to combine their imaginations with their engineering skills.

3

“And that is why ....” Repeat key message For all of these reasons, I would love to become an ‘imagineer’ because it is, most definitely the coolest job in the world.

They also have the freedom to dream up new constructions that have never been created before.
