Honoured for six decades of volunteer work Jonas Andrulis recognized for commitment to Lithuanian church CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Within a year of moving to Toronto from Lithuania in 1949, Jonas Andrulis began to volunteer with the Lithuanian Martyrs Church – a commitment that has now spanned more than six decades. Andrulis was one of the longest serving volunteers among
the 257 people recognized on Tuesday night at a Ontario Volunteer Service Awards ceremony at the Old Mill. The award, bestowed by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, honours volunteers of all ages for continuous service of five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60 years to an organization. “I didn’t expect it,” said Andrulis, a Kipling Avenue and
Rathburn Road area resident, shortly after receiving his award for more than 60 years of service to the Lithuanian Martyrs Church in Mississauga. Andrulis’ son Gytis said in addition to his father’s longstanding role as president of the church committee, Andrulis also spent a lot of time volunteering with the greater Lithuanian community.
“From the time I was a little kid, he was always involved in the Lithuanian community – with the youth, with the church, and with the Lithuanian school,” he said, noting his dad served as principal of the Lithuanian school for 15 years. “All my life, I remember my dad was always volunteering and helping the community. But all the guys in my old neighbourhood – all the people love him.” Etobicoke’s Chuvalo is the second person to be granted a key to the city by Mayor Ford. Former McDonalds Canada President George Cohon was the first to receive the honor in 2012 – prompting Chuvalo to joke the key went to people named George. In introducing Chuvalo, Ford listed “the contributions that he’s made to Toronto. These are many, and range from his >>>BOXER, page 13
