Ukrainians ‘stand in solidarity’ President of Ukraine says he’ll begin negotiations with opposition leaders TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Canadian-Ukrainians joined the chorus of western democracies speaking out this week against the vicious crackdown in Kyiv that has left at least 25 dead and hundreds injured. At Gu a rd i a n d e a d l i n e Wednesday, media reports said the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, issued a statement calling a truce and said he would enter negotiations with the opposition to end the bloodshed of earlier this week. It was that violence that
saw hundreds of CanadianUkrainians rally in the dark on Tuesday night chanting “sanctions” outside the Ukrainian Consulate on Lake Shore Boulevard West. Thousands of their pro-European Union brethren in Ukraine were pitted against riot police in the tent city they have occupied in Kyiv’s Independence Square since the political crisis began last November. Relations with Somali community improving: police report 23 Division hosts virtual town hall CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com In the 14 months since 23 Division’s Somali Liaison Unit (SLU) was first initiated, the six-officer unit has taken giant strides towards achieving its goal of enhancing police relations with Etobicoke’s Somali community. Gun violence in the Dixon Road community has ceased, officer-initiated programs for Somali youth are on the rise, and enhanced police relations with the community have helped open the lines of communication, Supt. Scott Baptist told the hundreds of Dixon Road residents who participated in the SLU’s second ever virtual town hall Tuesday night. “The Somali community outreach project strives to achieve meaningful dialogue and build trusting relationships with Toronto’s Somali-Canadian community through the provision of highly visible, proven and community-supportive policing services.
