Elementary teachers go on one-day strike Cynthia Reason creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke elementary teachers walked off the job along with thousands of their colleagues from across Toronto, Durham and Peel for the “Super Tuesday” strike action this week.

In total, more than 20,000 public elementary teachers from GTA Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (EFTO) locals took to the picket lines on Tuesday – making it the largest day-long action to ever hit Ontario.

At Hilltop Middle School in central Etobicoke, more than a dozen teachers bearing signs reading “Respect Teachers, Respect Collective Bargaining” took the morning shift, picketing in front of the Trehorne Drive school and up and down Royal York Road.

“We absolutely feel good that we’re standing together, we’re strong and we’re not going to back down,” said the Hilltop protestors’ spokesperson, Mara, a teacher at the school who declined to give her last name. “What’s at stake? That’s a huge question.

What’s at stake is our collective bargaining rights.”

Particularly at issue for the protesting teachers is Bill 115, also known as the Putting Students First Act, which requires all school boards, teachers and support staff to negotiate local agreements “consistent with the government’s fiscal and policy priorities” by Dec. 31.

E F TO Pre s i d e n t Sa m Hammond said the protests are a result of Education Minister Laurel Broten’s inaction to deal with the collective bargaining concerns of the province’s teachers.

“To date, the education minister has yet to do anything to assist local school boards in pursuing fair and respectful negotiations with our members,” Hammond said in a statement.

In a statement on the Ministr y of Education’s website, however, Bill 115 was defended as a move that “put our students and our education system first and to put education on a more

sustainable pathway.”

“In these challenging economic times, the government had a choice to increase pay and benefits for teachers or to spend on other important investments like full-day kindergarten, small class sizes, and preserving 20,000 teaching and support staff positions,” the statement reads, referring to Ontario’s current $15 billion deficit.

Back at Hilltop, the teachers said they were nevertheless getting lots of support from both their students and the wider community.

“A lot of the kids have done their own research on the bill and they’ve come in and said that they support us.

They talked to their parents about what the bill consists of, why we’re striking and why the work-to-rule. So they understood and they told us ‘you need to do what you need to do” – that’s been the response,” said Mara.

Arms loaded with toys, six Toronto police officers from 22 Division station loaded two minivans to the brim with $2,200 worth of toys from Samko & Miko Toy Warehouse on Fima Crescent in the Horner and Kipling avenues area last Friday.

Officers played Santa and delivered the toys to LAMP Community Health Centre on Fifth Street in the Lakeshore, where families will make an appointment to choose toys for their children to open Christmas morning.

“I think it’s awesome,” said Const. Michael Burgess, 22 Division’s crime prevention officer.

A month ago, Dave Bolland called his dad Drew in Mimico to ask how his Dave Bolland Foundation could make a Christmas donation in the community where he grew up.

The senior Bolland then called his friend Sgt. Russ Clark at 22 Division station. Clark

suggested LAMP. A call to Samko & Miko later, the Christmas gift giving die was cast.

The player’s parents, Drew and Carol-Ann, presented officers with a $2,000 cheque from their son’s foundation.

“I’m really proud of Dave,” his dad said. “When I was down talking with people at LAMP on Friday, I learned they helped 500 children last year.

I have four boys, all grown up now. I can’t imagine them not waking up Christmas morning to a present.”

Bolland launched his foundation in Chicago two years ago after organizing two annual golf tournaments that each raised approximately $45,000 for LAMP-based Remix Project, which helps youth interested in working in a creative field or in furthering their formal education.

Derek Jancar, a recording artist, co-founded Remix’s precursor Inner City Visions with a focus on hip hop music in 2000 with friend Gavin Sheppard, a manager of recording artists.

In 2006, the pair expanded the focus and course offering and changed the program’s name to the Remix Project.

Bolland co-founded his

foundation with his wife, Julia Zalucki, and Jancar, who is the foundation’s secretary and acting voluntary executive director after he saw the success of the golf tournaments, Jancar said.

Last year, the Dave Bolland Foundation raised more than $250,000 for charity, Jancar reported.

The week before Christmas, LAMP registered their clients from programs in primary health care, the early years, ASK! info centre and street level teens and tweens to participate in the toy room.

LAMP staff dressed as elves to help parents shop for toys for their children.

Toy room registrations are still coming in the week before Christmas. “ We’ve never tur ned anyone away. The community has always been very generous,” said Therese Stewart, an administrative assistant with LAMP’s occupational health department who has overseen the toy room program for the past five years.

“Donors migrate to us because we’re trusted, because people know if they get the toys to us, we’ll get them to people who need them.”

t may be green. It may even be warm. But warm weather won’t change the true spirit of the Christmas season.

Council has never seen a year like 2012

T

here has never been a more interesting year in the history of amalgamated Toronto council than 2012, and that’s saying something.

Toronto, after all, has had some interesting times in its short history since megacity amalgamation took effect at the start of 1998. We’ve lived through epic corruption scandals, high comedy from goofball mayors, endless battles with the provincial and federal governments, riots and mass arrests, and stinky, stinky garbage strikes.

But 2012? You have outdone yourself, o waning year.

The one interesting thing that didn’t happen this year was a garbage strike, and that’s something. But over the past 12 months, it has been a wild, realityshow-worthy ride: Toronto has seen nothing less than a seismic shift of power and influence away from a mayor who was just two years ago elected with a very powerful mandate.

Mayor Rob Ford’s fall from grace, such as it was, was a constant narrative through the year – and not just because we scribes

made it so.

The year began on an optimistic note, as the mayor and his brother, Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, started on what seemed like an easy, humanizing and healthful project, to drop a few pounds (well, 50) over six months. The mayor’s faltering diet and exercise regime would become an all-to-apt metaphor for his faltering control of council.

In the early months of 2012, councillors took matters into their own hands. The 2012 budget was re-made on the floor of council, to the mayor’s chagrin. And council didn’t stop there, voting to kill Ford’s dream of a subway to Scarborough and restore the light rail transit plan that he’d campaigned against.

One could go on all column about the indignities that council heaped

on the mayor’s office.

But at least half of the fun of this reality show of a year comes from the mayor himself. As early as February, Ford sowed the seeds of what might be his political downfall, when he spoke and voted on an integrity commissioner report demanding he repay $3,150 in donations to his football charity.

As a result, Ford finishes the year awaiting an appeal of a judge’s ruling that will see him removed from office if it’s upheld.

In between February and today, the mayor’s been called to the carpet for reading while driving, chasing a reporter, and skipping council meetings to coach high school football.

In 2013, all of this could culminate in something even more interesting: a mid-term mayoral byelection, in which Toronto voters are asked to come in and pronounce judgement on the wild, precipitous year that’s just now passing. n D a v i d Ni c k l e i s T h e Guardian’s city hall columnist. To the editor: Re: ‘Lindsay Luby interested in serving as interim mayor,’ News, Dec. 6 I almost choked on my apple when I read in David Nickle’s article that Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby wants to be appointed Mayor of Toronto, should the elected Mayor Rob Ford be eliminated in the new year.

Speaking of embarrassment, didn’t half of Etobicoke Centre Ward 4 voters (11,082) reject her in 2010 even as a councillor? Only a razor-thin majority of 309 votes brought her back into office.

It looks like her efforts in the past to extend councillor and mayoral terms from three to four years are bearing fruit for her now.

Finding consensus among like-minded politicians in this divided council is exactly what keeps this city in the doldrums.

If things got really hot in council, like the 2009 garbage strike vote and the more recent transit vote, Gloria Lindsay Luby was known to go on vacation, out of the country. Gloria Lindsay Luby as appointed mayor? Only if voters are slow to remember and quick to forget. As for me, I would rather choke on the $7 million and vote, if my vote ever counts for anything again.

Toronto police investigating thefts of high-end vehicles Toronto police are urging high-end vehicle owners to park in their garages after a rash of thefts from residential driveways.

Investigators released security camera images of suspects.

Suspects broke into a home in the Royal York Road and Dundas Street West area on Saturday, Nov. 10, having gained access through the rear yard and forced open a second-storey window, police said.

Once inside, the suspects ransacked the home and grabbed keys to the Escalade parked in the driveway. They were unable to take the Escalade because another vehicle was parked in the driveway.

Suspects stole a large amount of jewelry, including a yellow diamond ring valued at more than $100,000.

Richview Baptist Church continues annual tradition Richview Baptist Church will once again transform into the little town of Bethlehem next week for A Night in Bethlehem – an annual living nativity complete with live stable animals.

The drop-in event will feature a congregational cast of angels, shepherds, Roman guards and census takers, and, of course, Mary and Joseph to recreate the first Christmas. Joining them in the Nativity will be live goats, llamas, donkeys and sheep.

The event, which was a huge success last year, will also feature a number of interactive marketplace

activities for kids, including a free leather working hut, a brick chipping hut, a wood working hut, and free photos taken in the straw bails. Kids will also be able to feed and pet the animals in the Nativity.

A Night in Bethlehem takes place on Friday, Dec. 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Richview Baptist Church, 1548 Kipling Ave. (at Kipling and Eglinton avenues).

Admission and all crafts are free, but donations will be accepted. All are welcome to come celebrate the birth of Jesus.

The Kingsway-Lambton United Church Christmas Pageant continues to be a church and community tradition in The Kingsway, with more than 100 young people involved in the pageant each year.

It is their talents, brought out by the pageant’s producers and assistants, that have earned “A Child is Born” the very high regard of the Kingsway-Lambton congregation.

That tradition continued with this year’s 76th annual pageant, which took place during the first week of December.

Honda delivers an

athletic Accord The Honda Accord sedan was due for a makeover. Enter the 2013 model.

With its more aggressive grille, contoured sides and wide shoulders, the new exterior looks purposeful and athletic, in particular with the optional 18-inch alloys on the V6 Touring model, as tested.

Honda engineers have carved out more interior space from a smaller car. Length has been cut by more than 68mm, and the n AT A GLANCE: BODY STYLE: four-door, five-passenger mid-size sedan.

wheelbase by 25mm, yet there’s 33mm more rear legroom in back along with more shoulder room and a larger trunk that is up 50 litres to 439.

The result is a rear passenger area that has limo-like spaciousness, and the optional seat heaters (available mid-trim and up) are a nice touch. Front seats are heated on all models.

Throughout, the new model gets more soft-touch materials. I found the interior, at least in top trim, a little closer to Acura standards with a nice mix of tones and textures, faux woodgrain in the dash and door inserts, accented by tasteful metallic trim. The perforated leather seating with dual stitching is both eye-catching and comfortable. The main instruments are an attractive three-gauge layout, with the three-dimensional speedo in the centre (housing a multi-info display), tach on the left and fuel/temperature gauges on the right.

The Accord’s standard list of tech includes an eight-inch display that until recently would have been unheard of in a model range that starts at $23,990 for the four-cylinder LX. This bright, full-colour “intelligent� multi-info unit allows the driver

not only to make phone calls using handsfree Bluetooth, but also receive emails and SMS text messaging. The same eight-inch monitor provides such info as fuel-efficiency, distance to empty and – if you opt for higher trim – shows navigation, rearview camera and Lanewatch blind-spot display.

HondaLink is another cool feature, connecting you to thousands of cloud-based news, music and entertainment feeds using a compatible smartphone.

My $35,290 V6 Touring model came with additional features such as lane departure warning, and forward departure warning that lets you know when you’re closing in too quickly on the vehicle ahead.

In between the base LX and my top-

tier tester are three four-cylinder models: Sport $25,490, EX-L $29,090 and Touring $30,390.

Honda’s 24-valve i-VTEC V6 delivers significant punch. Its potent 278 hp and 252 lb/ft of torque finds its way to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Stomp on the pedal – particularly in Sport mode – and the Accord takes off like a shot. Your efforts are even rewarded by a nice, throaty exhaust note, which thankfully gets by the standardequipped active noise cancellation.

Econ mode tones down the throttle response and delivers earlier shift points for better fuel economy. It even allows for more variance in the cruise control and cli-

mate control, so that the throttle and A/C kick in less frequently.

And with the Eco Assist feature (another eco nanny), green bars on either side of the speedo light up to let you know whether you’re being naughty or nice.

Lastly, the 3.5-litre V6 gets variable cylinder management. This will shut down three of the six cylinders under low-demand conditions, such as highway cruising.

With the 2013’s slick styling, abundance of tech, and roomy, comfortable interior, this Accord delivers a value proposition that can easily go head-to-head with the best in its class.

Offering B 250 only in Canada, and not the U.S., was a brilliant move by Mercedes-Benz, because it hits at Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love of smaller more utilitarian vehicles with an increasing Canadian yearning for more luxury features with an added touch of exclusivity.

Where the B 250 may have a leg up is the price, starting at $29,900 with that coveted Three-Pointed Star on the hood.

The B 250 is not new to Canada.

An earlier version, the B 200 was sold here until the 2010 model year.

After a hiatus, the people mover is back with relatively the same shape but with some major changes.

Mercedes-Benz is a leader in safety and that is reflected in standard features on the B 250 such as 11 airbags, electronic stability control and even Attention Assist that monitors the driver and flashes an icon of a coffee cup and sounds an alert if the B 250 detects the driver becoming drowsy.

But also standard is the world debut of Collision Prevention Assist, a first on any Mercedes-Benz vehicle that will soon be found on every vehicle it makes. As soon as the brake is depressed, the Adaptive Brake Assist system integrated into Collision Prevention Assist can boost the brake pressure to prevent the accident thus ensuring the available braking distance between you and guy ahead is used

to maximum effect.

Also seen for the first time is a new 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder producing 208 hp and 258 lb/ft of torque driving the front wheels through a new sevenspeed dual clutch transmission.

The transmission is capable of double and triple downshifts with the driver being given the choice of three drive modes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; economy, sport and manual. In economy mode, fuel consumption is listed at 7.9/5.5/6.8L/100 km city/highway/ combined. Summing it up, the new engine produces 55 per cent more power and is 18 per cent more fuel efficient than the 2.0-litre engine it replaces.

The B 250 is a unibody with MacPherson strut system up front and an independent four-link system at the rear. There is an available sports package setup that also lowers the B 250 by 20 mm.

Even though it is a station wagon, the 2013 B 250 has a drag coefficient of 0.26, better than a lot of sports cars on the road.

But look closely and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll notice how the shape of the front fenders optimizes the airflow around the front wheels and there is a patent-pending serrated wheel arch spoiler that decreases drag and wind noise at the same time. Along with the outside mirrors mounted on the door, not the A pillar, little things like this can mean a lot

when it comes to lessening noise.

Claimed by Mercedes-Benz to be one of the most spacious vehicles in its class, an option is the Easy-Vario-Plus system that offers fore/aft adjustment of the rear seats by up to 140 millimetres (thereby increasing the luggage compartment volume from 488 to 666 litres) and a front passenger seat whose backrest can be folded forward onto the seat cushion.

With all seats flat cargo volume is 1,547 litres.

There are a host of options such as $1,200 for the memory power seats, $2,000 for the Sport Package that includes 17-inch wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights at $750 and $800 for the blind spot/lane departure system.

Standard is a 5.8-inch TFT colour display mounted on the centre of the dashboard looking very much like a small tablet. There is a larger 7-inch version with the navigation option but the 5.8-inch does just about everything you need.

When you add up all the added extras compared to the outgoing B-Class such as the new engine/ transmission and all the electronic driver aids like Collision Alert, it represents $7,000 in added value.

BMW has parachuted the 2013 ActiveHybrid 3 into the top of the lineup, taking the potent power of the 335iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s twin-scroll turbo-powered six-banger and adding some electric oomph for even more motive muscle.

A new BMW face stretches elongated headlamps to touch the trademark kidney grille and emphasize a new profile and sense of width.

Upholstered in Oyster Dakota leather, the ActiveHybrid 3 in Modern trim finds contrasts with satin finish metallic highlights, and comes with a full suite of equipment adding, among other options, a Premium Package with BMW On-Board Navigation, Rear View Camera and a Harman Kardon Sound System. A 6.5-inch free standing Control Display shows navigation maps and a variety of HVAC, audio and info readouts including hybrid performance data.

A 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that houses a 55 hp supplemental electric motor for a combined power rating of 335 hp @ 5800 rpm and 330 lb/ft of torque from 1300-5000 rpm.

The 2013 ActiveHybrid 3 separates itself from the rest of the 3 Series lineup with distinctive badging - ActiveHybrid 3 lettering on its C-pillars, doorsills and rear of the car.

The ActiveHybrid 3 was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit early this year and subsequent 2013 production models have been on sale since fall.

The new 2013 3 Series sedans already offer a wide range of choice, but rather than futzing into the middle of that 3 Series model selection with some party-pooping, emasculated version of their legendary sports sedan, BMW parachuted the ActiveHybrid 3 into the top of the lineup, taking the potent power of the 335iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s twin-scroll turbo-powered six-banger and adding some electric oomph for even more motive muscle.

The ActiveHybrid 3 adds a synchronous electric motor that develops a maximum output of 55 hp. Like all electric motors, full torque â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in this case 155 lb/ft â&#x20AC;&#x201C; comes on in a virtually instantaneous rush from a standing start. The combined power rating of the gasoline engine/electric motor works out to 335 hp at 5800 rpm and 330 lb/ft of torque from 1300-5000 rpm, an increase of 13 per cent and 11 per cent respectively. 0-100 km/h times average 5.5 seconds.

The electric motor gets its juice from a 96-cell lithium-ion highvoltage battery pack positioned between the wheel arches under the trunk floor. Despite the added bulk, the ActiveHybrid 3 maintains BMWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trademark 50/50 fore/aft weight distribution.

Drivers can choose exactly how much emphasis they want to put on fuel efficiency with a Driving Experience Control switch that can select from four different modes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the thriftiest ECO PRO mode, the default COMFORT mode setting, and the more performance-oriented SPORT and SPORT + modes, designed solely for track competition or for scaring your mother on the way to the mall.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a long list of other dynamic technologies that contribute to the ActiveHybrid 3â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fuel efficiency and performance but I should at least mention the eight-speed Steptronic automatic.

This tranny shifts early and eagerly, lugging into top gear at only 70 km/h and loping along at an unheard-of 1500 rpm at highway speed. You have to venture up to 130 km/h just to crack 2000 rpm.

Over the course of the four-month investigation into bringing Rene and Shane back home to Toronto, Nevills said she experienced a few “hiccups” serious enough that she wasn’t sure if Muzabazi’s children would ever return to Canada.

Etobicoke Collegiate grad raises alopecia awareness CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Two years ago, when Victoria Currie was 18, she began to notice her hair was falling out – just a few strands at first, but quickly escalating to full handfuls.

In her second year at the University of Guelph at the time, the Etobicoke Collegiate grad had no idea what was wrong with her – and neither did the scores of doctors and dermatologists she went to seeking help.

“It was a really frustrating diagnosis because I went to doctor after doctor and dermatologist after dermatologist and there was never a clear diagnosis,” Currie, now 20, said of the experience.

“One of them said the word ‘alopecia’, but I’d never heard that word before.”

After a trip to consult with her allergist, Currie learned about a specialist at Sunnybrook Hospital named Dr. Jeff Donovan. It was he who finally gave Currie her diagnosis with alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system, for unknown reasons, to attack the hair root and cause hair loss.

A self-conscious teen, Currie had lost nearly threequarters of her hair at that point, and was using hats and wigs to cover up her hair loss.

cyclopropenone) treatment Donovan prescribed for her, and her hair grew back quickly.

At the same time Currie was going through her alopecia ordeal, her mother, too, was losing her hair – but for a different reason. In the same week Currie received her alopecia diagnosis, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, which quickly spread through the rest of her body.

Their paralleled experience helped Currie put her own condition into perspective and helped her look beyond her concerns about her appearance to the more important things in life.

“When I was first going through it, I was angry that I

was so caught up in losing my hair when my mom was going through something so much more serious and hard to face, so that really helped me put things in perspective,” she said. “It made me think about what I really value in life – is it really my hair? I think there’s something wrong in society if we care that much about what we look like. So I had a bit of a mind change.”

Now facing a recurrence of her alopecia, this time around Currie is trying to use that new perspective to put a positive spin on her condition.

Currie hosted an Alopecia Awareness Skate Tuesday, Dec. 18 at the Colonel Samuel Smith Park skating trail, where all were invited to come out and enjoy a winter night’s skate on the figure-eight shaped trail, and learn about alopecia and how to support the Canadian Alopecia Areata Foundation (CANAAF).

“Last time I didn’t tell anybody what I was going through, but this time I know it’s not something to be ashamed of. If anything, it’s something that people are going to benefit from if I share my story,” Currie said.
