repair renovations that will see the profit-making half of its building closed down until at least December.

Laura Latham, FHCC’s executive director, said the phased, $5.4-million renovation project currently underway will ultimately see some much-needed

upgrades completed at its historical school building site on Horner Avenue – including asbestos abatement, window replacement, and the installation of an elevator.

In the meantime, however, Latham said the popular seniors’ gathering place is

struggling to continue to run its programming in only a third of the space, with the temporary closure of the three-storey portion of the FHCC building slated to last until the end of the year. That side of the centre, she added, houses FHCC’s popular >>>centre, page 17

Kipling Grove softball league marks 60 years

League welcomes all abilities, builds relationships and leaders CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When a handful of local fathers first assembled a group of neighbourhood boys together for some pickup softball games at the Kipling Grove schoolgrounds back in the spring of 1955, it’s doubtful they ever dreamt the league would still be going strong 60 years later.

However, the tradition endures as Kipling Grove Softball continues to operate in full swing every spring, offering softball programming for nearly 100 local kids of all abilities.

“This whole organization was designed to meet local needs when this subdivision was originally built in the 1950s,” said Doug Lawrie, Kipling Grove Softball’s cocommissioner and head umpire. “The kids living here at the time had nowhere to

go that wasn’t too far to go by themselves. So, that’s what drove the original four or five guys that started it up back then, and the kids are what continue to drive us today. It’s been the spirit of this whole community from square one.”

These days, Lawrie said the volunteer-run league continues to grow in both size and scope – now offering cottage league spring programming to both boys and girls aged seven to 16 every April through June.

This year, Kipling Grove Softball is once again striving to field four full teams in each of its junior (players roughly aged seven to 11) and senior (ages 12 to 16) divisions.

“The trick is for the kids to come out and have fun, and to learn the game and pick up some skills at the same time. We’re gonna teach them a game that they can

Kipling Grove Softball’s community-oriented focus has proven a “fantastic” fit for their 13-year-old son William.

“My son has special needs, so it was very important for us to have somewhere where he could participate fully,”

Paul Martin said of his son William, who’s played on the Tigers junior team for the last three years. “They have been over-the-top welcoming and accommodating, so it’s been very exciting for us.”

In addition to softball skills, Lawrie said the league also acts as leadership training for many of its young charges – and by the time the players have cycled through the program by age 16, many are primed and ready to come back as volunteer umpires and assistant coaches.

“I end up with them coming back to do their community service hours for us, and that’s great because we’re all volunteer-run here,” Lawrie said, noting he first began volunteering with Kipling Grove Softball back in the early ’90s

Registration for Kipling Grove Softball’s 2015 season – which runs from April 20 to June 22 – is now open.

Junior teams play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, while senior teams take to the field Mondays and Wednesdays.

All games are played on the two baseball diamonds located at the former Kipling Grove Public School, 19 Glen Agar Dr. (north of Rathburn Road, between Kipling Avenue and Martin Grove Road).

Warmups begin at 6:30 p.m., while games start at 6:45 and wrap up around 8 p.m.

Registration is $65 and includes a team photo and trophies. Participants must purchase a team hat ($12), jersey ($23) and provide their own baseball glove.

All other equipment is provided by the league.

Toronto was recently ranked the best place to live, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, a unit of The Economist magazine. There were 50 global cities included. Granted, Toronto has ranked high in similar studies before, so it’s no surprise the city welcomes more than 25 million visitors annually, spending more than $5 billion and more than $1.5 billion on food and entertainment.

However, what many tourists understand we Torontonians sometimes overour view look, even take for granted.

What we discovered is there are so many amazing stories about Torontonians starting a band that suddenly becomes huge (Broken Social Scene comes to mind), or a filmmaker who grew up in the city and is now world-renowned (David Cronenberg for one), or an award-winning author who started filling pages in Hogtown (Margaret Atwood for instance). We took all those great stories and put them under one roof: Enjoy Toronto.

Big Data monitoring of Toronto traffic comes with a price

O

ne of the big problems Mayor John Tory came into office promising to solve was also one of the most ubiquitous: traffic.

He started out strong and without even a council vote behind him, rallying city staff and law enforcement into a blitz against illegal parking during rush hour, and very quickly claimed at least anecdotal success: people were telling him their commutes were getting easier. It was harder to quantify, though, because as it turns out the city doesn’t really do much to reliably monitor the intensity of rush hour traffic.

It looks as though that’s about to change.

On April 7, Tory announced the city would be looking at high-tech ways to monitor traffic density, pedestrian congestion, bicycle efficiency, all of that. How? Two words: Big Data.

This, of course, is a

The idea is to use the smartphone networks that help us use our navigation functions to tell city traffic planners where exactly we are, and what it’s likely we’re doing.

So whether it’s a crowd of us trying to decipher the scramble intersection at Yonge and Dundas, or a line of us trying to manage a left turn at Yonge and Sheppard, city traffic planners will have a line on it.

For the purpose of traffic management, it’s a powerful tool. Unchecked, it is a privacy nightmare.

Snowdon, currently hiding in Russia, provided evidence of just how unchecked it is. Huge amounts of information about our private lives are neatly filed in NSA (National Security Agency) computers in the United States.

Almost as much is in the hands of Google and Facebook and even of the developers of games about angry birds, and those little flashlight apps on our smartphones.

We signed the end user agreement on that information a long time ago and

barely realized it.

Given that, maybe it’s worth it to allow a little more information about our whereabouts to be collected and collated, so the city can manage its traffic light energy grid more efficiently and keep streetcars running more effectively.

It is naïve, however, to expect Toronto will be able to access that kind of service without giving up quite a lot of the presumed privacy of its citizens and particularly as the city engages private sector data mining firms to do the work.

It’s unreasonable to think that the best ones will limit their measurements to the amount of time it takes to drive the Don Valley Parkway from Queen Street to Eglinton Avenue at 4 p.m. on a Tuesday.

Everything has a price.

Follow the footsteps of famous explorers

Etobicoke native speaks to The Guardian about his life passions: music and outdoor adventure CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Long before he became internationally known as Survivorman, Les Stroud was just your average suburban kid who spent his childhood in Mimico watching Jacques Cousteau movies on TV and dreaming of the day he, too, would lead a life of adventure and exploration.

“That original dream came from just being a kid in the ’70s watching television – that’s what put that love of wildlife and adventure and remote places in my brain, for sure,” the 53-year-old survival expert, filmmaker, musician and author said in a recent phone interview with The Guardian.

“Otherwise, it was a very, very typical suburban existence: boring; white bread and peanut butter; listening to Styx and Supertramp growing up.”

A south Etobicoke native, Stroud listed Marie Curtis Park, Sunnyside Beach and High Park as a few of this favourite childhood haunts, but it was while exploring at his family’s cottage north of the city that he got his first taste of his future exploits.

“I used to actually play at shelter-making and little survivor stuff out in the woods behind the cottage in Bracebridge,” he laughed.

“But, at that point, it was all just for fun.”

As with classic episodes of Survivorman, in Legends the traditional rules apply: no food, no shelter, no fresh water, no tools, no camera crew.

“It’s probably much more of a challenge and a struggle than people are aware of, although some of it is evident on screen. There are all of the inherent challenges of survival: the loneliness, the

struggle for food and energy, and cold and hot, and wet and dry,” Stroud said of his 14 years of Survivorman experience enduring solo survival treks into the wilds of the Kalahari Desert, the Canadian Arctic, the Grenada Jungle, the swamps of Georgia and the African Plains, among many other deserted and sometimes desolate locales.

“But it’s also a struggle as an artist to know that, within the scope of five days spent completely alone, I have to film and tell a story worthy of being a 45-minute television

show...not to mention having to survive on top of that.”

The twist with the newest incarnation of Stroud’s hit Discovery Channel and Outdoor Life Network show – for which he acts as writer, host, cameraman and producer – is with Legends he’s actually following in the footsteps of real-life explorers, both historical and modernday, over the course of each episode.

“The idea is to take a look at an existing famous or unknown survival story and say, ‘You know what?

Using my skill sets, I will go and relive their ordeal, or a portion of it, and dissect what they did right, what they did wrong, what they coulda-shoulda done, what I would’ve done, and walk through it,’” he explained.

“It gives an interesting twist and focus to the otherwise set formula of Survivorman.”

In Chile, Stroud spent the first week of February retracing the steps of Argentinian hiker Laureano Emanuel Santos, who died in a blizzard in 2013 after getting lost in the expansive, nearly 250,000-hectare Torres del Paine National Park, which encompasses mountains, glaciers, lakes and rivers in the southern Chilean Patagonia.

While Stroud’s acclaimed survival skills are known far

and wide, some Survivorman fans may be surprised to hear that he’s also an accomplished musician who’s not only responsible for writing and performing his show’s theme song, but has also shared the stage with the likes of Chicago, Alice Cooper, Slash, Randy Bachman and Lynyrd Skynyrd, among many others.

His recently released fifth album, Barn Sessions III - Off the Grid, was live-recorded on his solar-powered property deep in the woods near Huntsville in order to keep the sound as “organic” as possible.

“Rather than going into the studio and doing endless overdubs and retakes and fixing the pitch of voices and stuff, this was a gathering together of a goodsized group of very talented musicians of predominantly acoustic instrumentation, all in one room,” Stroud said of recording Barn Sessions III, which he describes as having a “strictly roots/acoustic/ singer-songwriter” sound.

“We were all together, we went at a song, we gave it four or five shots at it, and then we were done and moving on to the next song. It was really a fun, wonderful way to record an album.”

Now that the album is complete – and available for purchase online at www. lesstroud.ca – Les Stroud and the Campfire Kings are set to take Barn Sessions III on the road this coming fall on a “serious” tour of Canada and the U.S., Stroud said.

Stroud takes care to allow room for both his life passions.

“Like my love for nature, music is a compulsion: I can’t escape it, I can’t avoid it. I can depart from it for a time, but I’m always driven back to it, because it’s just something that I can’t live without,” he said.

Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied.

What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.

What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions.

What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.

Wadsworth milling empire ruled Weston area for 87 years

he community of Weston exists because of a fluke of geography that created a vertical drop in the Humber River of six metres for just over 32 kilometres.

The water power that this drop could produce quickly led to the development of Weston as a major early milling centre in Upper Canada.

Milling began in Weston in 1792 when John Countryman built a saw mill on the west bank of the Humber in Etobicoke.

His mill burned down in 1794, but Joseph Holley rebuilt it and added a grist mill in 1800. In 1814, Holley sold his mills to James Farr, who then sold them to Charles and William Wadsworth, brothers from England, in 1828.

The Wadsworth family would operate mills on that site for the next 87 years.

In 1830 the Wadsworths enlarged their grist mill

history corner and constructed a saw mill north of it. They also built a 14-room house on the north side of St. Phillips Road, overlooking the Humber River. They named their home Pine Hills and surrounded it with beautiful gardens.

A whiskey distillery was opened, and the leftover mash fed 100 head of cattle and several hundred pigs on the Wadsworths’ 200-acre Etobicoke farm.

In 1856 they built the new modern grist mill that you see in the photo. It was sixstoreys tall, with eight run of stones imported from France. This mill operated 24 hours a day, year round, producing 150 barrels of flour daily.

Charles died in 1867, but William lived until 1890.

However, Charles may have extended himself too far because in 1916, his entire estate was being offered for sale at public auction under a power of sale. Charles moved to Barrie and lived with one of his sons until his death in 1933.

In 1918 the flour mill was demolished and the lumber was used to build houses in Toronto. In 1920, Weston Golf Club bought 300 acres of the Wadsworth land to lay out a new golf course and they turned the house into their clubhouse.

When the golf club demolished the house in 1967 and replaced it with a new clubhouse, the last trace of the Wadsworth milling empire in Weston disappeared.

Drop-in mental, sexual health clinic supports west-end youth LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A new kids’ health clinic in Davenport Village designed by youth for youth is the first of its kind to open in the area.

Davenport MPP Cristina Martins shared those words during the official grand opening of EdgeWest Healthcare for Youth this month.

Situated on Davenport Road, just west of Symington Avenue, the clinic was made possible through a collaboration among the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Community Health Centre (DPNCH), Planned Parenthood Toronto and LOFT Community Services.

Opened since December, the clinic provides free and confidential medical, sexual and mental-health services in one drop-in centre.

“Research shows that young people in the west end have poor health outcomes,” DPNCH chair Wade Hillier told those who had gathered for the

clinic’s launch event March 31.

“In response to that research, we reached out to more than 300 youth.”

Young people in Davenport have reported a lack of access to services prevents them from receiving the health care they need. That’s why teens and young adults played an integral role in developing the new clinic. EdgeWest serves 13 to 29 year olds and offers free and confidential medical,

mental, and sexual health-care services in a youth-positive environment.

“We put together a letter for the seniors and mailed it out on a Friday, and by Monday, the cheques started flooding into the office,” she said. “One local gentleman who isn’t even a member donated $1,000, and our seniors raised about $14,000 in $50-$100 cheques – that’s a lot of cheques.”

AquiCon Construction, the company hired by the city to undertake the renovations, also kicked in an additional $5,000 to the cause, an appreciative Latham noted.

FHCC’s seniors’ programs also include art, yoga, line and ballroom dancing, jazzercise, cards, shuffle board, bingo, fitness and computer programming, among many others.

Latham credits EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes with ensuring the building’s year-and-a-halflong renovation project was phased so that FHCC could remain on site throughout the process. When construction is complete on the three-storey portion of the building in December 2015, she added, all centre operations will relocate there, as work continues on the other side.

The entire project is expected to be complete by June 2016, but until then, Latham said FHCC is looking to the community for support.

Residents believe company is ignoring the rules for truck traffic >>>from page 1 29 Judson St. is on the south side of a residential street near the Mimico GO Train station, across from a park, seniors’ residence and adjacent houses.

Wilkins is presiding over a tribunal hearing that began Tuesday of an appeal by ML Ready Mix of provisions of its amended Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) related to permitted truck traffic, record keeping and hours of operation.

John Alati, the company’s lawyer, argues in a notice of appeal to the tribunal that a 2013 acoustic assessment report permits five aggregate trucks per hour not the three restricted by the ECA. ML’s notice of appeal further submits the number of trucks restricted by a rolling 60-minute period, rather than per hour, is “untenable, logistically impossible to implement and appears to unfairly target the Appellant.”

Alati requested the tribunal revoke an ECA provision that requires the company to keep

records for two years of the arrival and departure times of each truck, and each truck type.

The approval limits the number of trucks, which includes ready-mix trucks, aggregate trucks and cement powder tanker trucks, to the company’s hours of operation: Mondays to Fridays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Neighbours have long complained of tractor-trailers and dump trucks rolling by mere metres from their homes, and expressed concerns about “fugitive dust” from the facility and its health impact.

“It’s non-stop,” JoAnne McKeown, who lives three doors down from the plant, said of the truck traffic.

“When there are trucks after 7 p.m., I email the company. They either don’t acknowledge it, or say it never happened. They don’t believe they’re in violation.”

Alati declined to respond to specific questions regarding the appeal and neighbours’ concerns.

The pitched battle between company officials and neighbouring residents began in 2007 when the concrete facility began operating.

ML Ready Mix operated without ministry environmental approvals until 2013, which further exacerbated tensions between it and adjacent residents.

Rene Silva, the company’s technical controller, said the company applied in

2008 to the Ministry of the Environment for a certificate of approval for noise and dust emissions — “It’s a long process; it goes back and forth,” he said.

“We’re willing to work things out, to be a good corporate citizen,” Silva said in a 2013 interview. “But if people just don’t want us here, unfortunately we are here.”

The city rezoned the area in March 2012 to ban new

industry such as concrete mixing facilities. As ML Ready Mix operated its facility prior to the zoning change, it has ‘lawful non-conforming’ zoning status.

Dan Irwin lives directly across the street and has been leading the charge for years in filing complaints to various levels of government about the company’s operations.

Irwin says the company operates at least 384 trucks in

A Ministry of the Environment spokesperson confirmed the ministry’s environmental approval permits 384 trucks daily.

“The company is permitted 384 trucks a day. The ECA doesn’t regulate dump trucks and big fuel tankers and other trucks. It has got to be more than 400 trucks a day. Who at the MOE saw fit to permit this?” Irwin said.

“These trucks are idling 30 feet from my front windows.”

Irwin further stated: “This guy wants to operate 24 hours a day.”

Alati rejected Ir win’s charge in an email to The Guardian.

“The allegations...about the purpose of ML’s appeal are categorically incorrect and misleading,” Alati wrote. “ML is not seeking permission to operate 24 hours through this process, nor is the number of trucks presently permitted to access the site 384.”

I’ve dealt with situations where a client will come to me having sold his or her home and wonder what to do next. Where should the person go?

In general, the most common options available for senior home buyers are as follows: • Condominiums • Gated Communities •New Builds • Retirement Community Homes • Long-term Care Facilities CONDOMINIUM The condominium is a great choice for those looking to downsize, particularly if one doesn’t want the obligation of real estate maintenance, but still wishes to have control of his interior space (in other words, he wants to do the cooking and cleaning on his own). Also, for many, the condo offers a carefree environment, with access to high quality amenities, such as an exercise facility or pool.

GATED COMMUNITY A gated community tends to offer fewer amenities than the

condo option. The benefit of the gated community is that it eases the security risk of living in a single home, with a community advocate taking care of and overseeing the exterior maintenance (such as lawns, windows and roofs).

NEW BUILD In most cases, a new build is covered under the Ontario New Home Warranty Plan, which entitles the home buyer to certain protections under the law. An added benefit to the new build is that, while the space is under construction, it can be customized to suit one’s needs and lifestyle concerns (for example, the space can be altered to allow for greater wheelchair access).

RETIREMENT COMMUNITY This type of facility allows the individual to assign to another party the task of certain daily activities – such as meal preparation or house cleaning – while still maintaining control over other daily activities. The individual is able to choose the services as he needs them.

LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY The long-term care facility focuses on the medical, functional and physical needs of the individual, and attempts to address these needs by offering a higher level of personal service. When looking into this option, it’s important to assess the medical needs of the individual (i.e., mobility, mental capacity, etc.), and how to best meet these needs to maximize the individual’s quality of life.

As you can see, when selling your home, it’s absolutely essential to determine where to go next. The second, critical step in the process is to select the right housing option for the next stage of life. Luckily, there are many options available. It’s simply a matter of identifying your needs, and then finding the right fit for your life and your lifestyle.

Mimico resident looking to buy her brother’s statue JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Mimico resident Lois O’Neil is hoping the owner of a purple and gold statue, bought from her brother, Harold, before he died, will contact her.

Lois recently reached out on social media in the hopes of locating and purchasing the hand-painted statue, which her brother sold to someone in the Beach community where he lived before he died Dec. 14, 2012.

During a recent interview, Lois said she deeply misses her brother and feels the statue would be a great way to have a piece of him close by.

Lois and Harr y grew up in Grand Falls, New Brunswick.

“We were very close – him and I – close in age, too. We’re just 11 months apart,” Lois said.

Etobicoke resident Lois O’Neil is looking for the owner of this statue, which belonged to her brother. She wants to buy it back.

“Throughout our lives we always lived in the same city and we’ve always been near the water,” she said, adding she often thinks of her brother when looking out

to Lake Ontario.

“In his last few years, I wanted Harry to move closer to my place. He was always visiting.”

Lois said she has been thinking about the statue for the last two years and is looking to buy it from it’s current owner for as much as three times the original price – Harold sold it for $80.

“I know somebody in the neighbourhood bought the statue but I never knew the person’s name,” said Lois, who said she’d love to place the piece near the small pond in the back of her Mimico home.“Somebody, somewhere either has it or knows somebody who has it.” It’s only been a few days since she posted about the statue and she said the response has been “overwhelming.”

Students match studies with stories from genocide survivor

Rwanda’s Emery Rutagonya recounts experiences to Silverthorn Collegiate students Simone Abrahamsohn etg@insidetoronto.com Students at Silverthorn C.I. took a break from their classes to learn about the Rwandan genocide from a survivor’s perspective.

Emery Rutagonya is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide and co-founder of Rwanda Survivors Foundation (a Toronto-based non-profit organization that aims to raise awareness and support survivors).

He spoke to an audience of 150 students on Tuesday, March 31 about his first-hand experiences during the 1994 genocide, which he described as “hell on earth.”

According to the United Nations, as many as one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were massacred by the Hutu majority that year, and an estimated 150,000 to 250,000 women were also raped.

Rutagonya spoke of maintaining hope and faith throughout his ordeal – which included hiding in a family friend’s attic for over two months with no food or water for days at a time – and told the students he lives his life to honour those who lost theirs, and that he survived day-by-day.

“I didn’t know how long it would continue for,” he said.

“After seeing my friends and family members shot dead in front of me, I became numb, like a zombie. But through the despair, there was also hope. A voice in the back of my head kept saying I would survive. I would live my life for the ones who lost theirs.”

The soft-spoken and engaging speaker, who now makes his home in Toronto’s High Park neighbourhood with his wife and daughter, shared his harrowing story with the enraptured students, all of whom were familiar with the

Seated according to which course they were in, the grades 10 and 11 students had either taken the geno-

cide course – introduced to the Toronto District School Board curriculum in 2008, and taught by Silverthorn teacher, Shelley Kyte, who organized the event – or had learned

about the genocide in Kyte’s history class.

“My students have always been empathetic to survivors’ experiences when being taught about the genocide, and when I heard Emery speak at an event I attended, I thought it would be invaluable for them to hear his story,” said Kyte.

Grade 10 history students, Emilia Dzoranovic and Izzy Vaccarino presented Rutagonya with a card and thanked him for coming to talk to their school.

“Although we had a good understanding and overview of the Rwandan genocide from what we were taught in class, hearing Emery’s story was so moving, and it helped me to visualize details I hadn’t known about, such as road blocks and physical obstacles,” Vaccarino said.

Rutagonya told the students he was just a bit older than them, when life as he knew it

changed overnight. He went from being an 18-year-old student who enjoyed watching movies and hanging out with his friends, to being a refugee in his own country, resourcefully seeking out hiding places.

“We’ve learned about three different genocides in class (the Rwandan genocide, Armenian genocide and the Holocaust), but to hear someone’s personal story, someone who lived through the horror, is incredible,” said Sameea Hussain, a Grade 11 student at Silverthorn.

Rutagonya is currently touring North America to speak to high school and university students on his “Tour of Hope 2015”, which began in March and continues until May, in an effort to inspire and educate students about the genocide.

Olympian MacLean to swim at Pan Am Olympians Brittany MacLean and Martha McCabe lead a handful of Toronto swimmers who will be returning to their hometown later this summer for the Pan Am Games.

Also earning the honour of competing on their own home turf are Michelle Williams and Alex Loginov.

In addition, McCabe and Williams have also been named to Canada’s team that will compete at the FINA

World Championships in Kazan, Russia this summer.

Swimming Canada announced the Canadian teams on Saturday, immediately after the conclusion of its national team trials event held at the new Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough which will also host the Pan Am swimming event.

McCabe and Williams were both winners at the trials,

McCabe in Wednesday’s 200m breast stroke and Williams in Thursday’s 100m freestyle.

Williams, who graduated Vaughan Road Academy, learned to swim in the North York Aquatic Club where she is still a member.

McCabe, who now competes out of the Toronto Swim Club, grew up in East York’s Bennington Heights neighbourhood, attending Leaside High School.

Olympian Brittany MacLean wears her bronze medal from the 800m freestyle at last year’s 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. This summer she will get to swim in her own backyard in the Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Battling injury, Olympian MacLean, an Etobicoke native and longtime member of the Etobicoke Swim Club and Silverthorn Collegiate grad, had already taken herself out of consideration for the world championships but a third-place finish in the 400m freestyle earned her the opportunity to compete in the Pan Am Games in her hometown.

Several years ago, after finishing her high school days, she knew it would be time to pack up, shuffle off from her Pembroke home and find the perfect place for the next stage of academics and building a future.

Keeping physically fit, and finding time to play some competitive volleyball during a post-secondary education was also on the list of importance for Hanniman – gifted, exceptional and talented.

Now 21 years of age and taking time to reflect, Hanniman had no idea her path – a university degree and college diploma would also include an accumulation of sport accolades.

The latest award of achievement, chosen co-winner of the Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning Female Athlete of the Year award, is something the veteran will share with school rookie badminton player Olivia Lei. “There was a time when the spotlight never shined on me as an athlete and now, with so many talented people (at Humber), to have such an honor, it was a shock, just a huge surprise, when

Prior to that, she was picked as the top female volleyball player in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association and was on a team that finished the provincial campaign with a 21-0 record, gold medal and she was the scoring champ.

After dominating discussions of talented players across the country, for Humber not to pick her would have been remiss.

“Leaving home for school was part of experiencing life – being independent and seeing what’s out there,” said Hanniman, who has a strong interest in human kinetics, injury prevention and rehabilitation with plans to take the knowledge from her health diploma and kine-

siology degree to Ottawa to work in massage therapy.

There was also no underrating or under-estimating Lei, an international student from China.

She was named the 2015 CCAA women’s badminton Player of the Year and an all-Canadian. Helping her get to that level was the women’s singles gold medal and an undefeated provincial season. co-winners john sheridan (rugby) and wTyrone Dickson (hoops) Humber’s top male award was also shared between rugby player John Sheridan and basketball star Tyrone Dickson.

Dickson, a former OCAA Rookie of the Year and with a bit of adversity in his career because of academic ineligibility a few years ago, was a power forward on Humber’s Canadian championship basketball team, picked Player of the Game in the gold medal match and a first team allstar. He also has a silver medal from the OCAA season and set a Humber single-season record in rebounds with 217.

After a stunning season in basketball, Richview Collegiate grad Sofia Paska was chosen Ryerson’s top first year female athlete. Soccer player Raheem Rose, who had attended Newtonbrook Secondary, was the male rookie of the year.

And Durham College in Oshawa picked Silverthorn Collegiate grad Sasha Vukoje, a 6-foot-3 forward, as its Most Valuable Player in soccer.

Trevor Seraphine, 17, was shot and killed outside high rise A woman is the latest person to be arrested and charged in connection with the murder of 17-year-old Trevor Seraphine last month.

Samelia Dania Wiltshire, 24, was arrested Friday, April 3 and charged with accessory

after the fact to murder. She is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

On Friday, April 3, Toronto police also arrested Corey Murray, 29, in the case. He is charged with first-degree murder. He was scheduled

to appear in court Saturday, April 4.

Murray’s younger brother, Curtis Murray, 25, was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder earlier last week. The two brothers are the prime suspects in

Metrolinx hopes to keep city’s chief planner off public panel Metrolinx is set to reject an official request from the city to have Toronto’s chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat sit on an upcoming public panel studying options for improving the Davenport Diamond rail-crossing lands.

Before a council vote approving the request took place, Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said while city staff is providing “key” assistance for the project, the panel itself should be open only to local residents.

EXPRESS EXPECTED TO LAUNCH IN MAY wUP

With the Union Pearson (UP) Express getting set to make its debut, Metrolinx says it will announce an official launch date once safety and emergency testing for the four-stop rail connection between Union Station and Pearson International Airport is completed.

The testing is scheduled to take place Saturday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 28 and intended to evaluate UP’s readiness in case of emergency.
