Etobicoke Centennial Choir continues its choral tradition Community ensemble holds open rehearsal for prospective members

It’s fun getting into treble.

Just ask the members of the Etobicoke Centennial Choir (ECC).

The 50-person strong community ensemble is tuning up for it’s 49th season, and is looking for new members to join them in harmony.

The ECC is holding an open rehearsal on Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 7:15 to 10 p.m. at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd.

Prospective choristers can meet music director Henry Renglich, preview upcoming repertoire and sing songs with current members.

“It gives interested parties a free look-see into what’s involved, how a practice is conducted and what the levels of experience and expertise are like,” said baritone and ECC president Greg Pimento.

“In one fell swoop it can answer a lot of questions.”

Accompanist turned music director Renglich conducts the soprano, alto, tenor and

bass sections through classical and contemporary repertoire, both sacred and secular.

From Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s cantatas to Broadway favourites, the group is exposed to a wide variety of music and culture.

Renglich invites professional shower singers and closet crooners to come out and test-drive their vocal chords at the rehearsal. He said there is nothing like standing in a choir and singing.

“The final product is always more than the sum of its parts,” he said. musical ability Those who feel like the ECC may be a good fit are encouraged to audition. Prospective members should have some musical background and the ability to read music or learn quickly.

Renglich said there is a strong sense of community within the ECC. Members share a love of choral music and remain dedicated to the pursuit of choral excellence.

“There is a core of people in the choir who have been there for over 20 years. It’s a strong tradition,” he said.

“Ultimately, people come back because it’s an awful lot of fun. I’m hoping that people interested in that experience at least come out and try.”

president Shari Ellis said the music “gets into your blood.”

She enjoys heading to the local pub after practice.

“I love the singing as much as I love the social aspects of the choir,” she said. “I’ve developed great friendships there.”

Pimento, who works as an engineer, uses singing as an outlet.

“Working at something very different from what you work at every day helps you relax,” he said.

Renglich agrees music can

be therapeutic.

“It’s good for the soul, It’s good for the mind. It’s good for the heart,” he said.

This year’s performance season will begin with the annual Sacred Traditions concert on Saturday, Dec. 5, featuring holiday carols and lullabies, a children’s choir and an audience singa-long.

The ECC will usher in spring with “a fragrant bouquet of music” during When Daffodils Begin to Peer on Saturday, April 2.

The season will close on Saturday June 4, with Cherished Opera, a night showcasing selections from Puccini, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and more.

Individual concert tickets are $25, and a three-concert season subscription is available for $60. Group rates can also be arranged. To order tickets, call 416-769-9271.

abour Day is like the middle of the longest car trip you can remember: powering across the prairies, destination a little farther past the horizon than the trip’s beginning.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper got us started early – way back in August, packing up the federal election campaign bus in the dark and hauling us from our Sunday morning beds without so much as a bathroom break before hitting the highway.

And now here we are: in the midst of the longest federal election this century, that by the polls is anyone’s to win.

So far, for those of us paying attention and not distracted by our view the attack ads on the in-car DVD player, what we’ve had to occupy Serious us are strategic and tactical questions. questions The trial of suspended senator to consider Mike Duffy has laid bare some of the inner workings of Harper’s prime minister’s office (PMO), and we’ve puzzled over how the revelations might be used by the New Democrats or Liberals, or somehow minimized by the Conservatives.

We’ve watched Liberal leader Justin Trudeau dodge attack ads complimenting his hair, but questioning his readiness, then put in a good early debate performance, and wondered how that might affect the polls.

And we’ve tried to figure out what it is Tom Mulcair’s New Democratic Party is doing to edge into the lead in all those polls that keep dropping.

Well, it’s Labour Day coming up – not even halfway to the Oct. 19 election day – and it’s safe to say we’ve burned through all the simple driving games.

It’s time to start paying attention – and by that we don’t mean watching U.S. Republican leader hopeful Donald Trump on YouTube.

Voters in Toronto and across the country are facing some serious questions about the next five years. The three main parties are offering very different visions and plans to navigate this country down what could be some very rough roads.

Conservatives, Liberals and New Democrats sharing the driving up front will have strategies for us to consider. Although it may not seem like it here in the back seat, we, the voters, only have choices.

Olympic flame a temptation too great to resist

T

here are some temptations that are too much for a mayor to resist. Promising a tax freeze, or increases so low they may as well be?

That’s a tough one.

Devising a new transit plan that wasn’t on anybody else’s long-term infrastructure plan?

Good luck saying no.

But those are all easy when it comes to the tempting, flickering flame of the Olympics.

A mayor who says no to that would have to be made of sterner stuff than pretty well all of them.

So it is with Mayor John Tory, who appears to be following Oscar Wilde’s advice, which is to say, banishing temptation by yielding to it.

After a summer of feigning a wait-and-see attitude, Tory appears to be ready to go all in with a bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.

There is a lot to like, politically at least, in being out-front in a bid for an

It is, first and foremost, a fundamentally boosterish enterprise: mayors and business leaders and often popular sports figures spend lunch-hours before cameras speaking highly of their city and basking in the glow of it.

Infrastructure projects find themselves at least nominally on a fast-track for funding. The city and its leadership floats along on dreams.

Of course, dreams are what they are, and things can go nightmarishly wrong.

Former mayor Mel Lastman brought the city a pot-full of embarrassment when he made a cannibalism joke as he prepared to visit Africa to court International Olympic Committee (IOC) votes on Toronto’s 2008 bid. The only

thing that might have been worse would have been actually winning the bid over Beijing, and ending up with a suite of unusable facilities and terrible debt as Montreal did in 1976 – or just disappointing economic results as London did in 2012.

Tory might be headed for a more ignominious defeat than that.

There is serious question as to whether even his own council – even the portion of council that happily supports him – is at all supportive of going forward with the plan.

On Tuesday, members of the city’s budget committee had little time for launching a bid for 2024.

Budget chief Gary Crawford made it clear he was “cautiously” withdrawing from the idea – the cost of simply launching a bid being a major barrier.

Etobicoke Centre Councillor John Campbell opined that even if the private sector or some other

level of government were to front the $50 to $60 million it costs to launch a bid, the city would still be best to stay away.

Others, like York Centre Councillor James Pasternak suspected with Los Angeles entering the race, winning the Olympics would simply be impossible for 2024.

Perhaps, he thought, 2028 might work, but with a novel and so-far againstthe-rules strategy of teaming up with Buffalo, New York, for an international bid.

Based on all of that, it looks as though no matter how mightily Tory is tempted, the better judgement of his friends on council will prevail – and our mayor will find himself hauled back from the bright Olympic flame, before his wings get any more than a little singed.

OPI hosts its general meeting next week

Our Place Initiative (OPI) will hold its next general meeting on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the HUB room at Lush Cosmetics, 35 Jutland Rd. – and all Etobicoke residents are invited.

Founded in 2012, OPI is a grassroots organization that seeks to increase civic engagement in Etobicoke.

Now it’s time to make plans for the fall – including a federal election candidate’s

debate at Humber College and some get-out-the-vote canvassing to increase the political engagement of the people of Etobicoke.

Kingsway Humber Kiwanis is the recipient of Staples Sherway’s back to school supply drive.

Staples for Students is collecting cash donations from the public to purchase back to school supplies through Sept. 13. Kingsway Humber Kiwanis will then donate the supplies to children in need.

Many items are being purchased during the store’s back to school sale

to help stretch the donation dollars, said Julian Lum-Smith, Staples Sherway’s computer technician.

Staples Sherway’s goal: $5,000 in donations.

“To date, we’re at $3,500. So we’re close to beating that goal,” LumSmith said.

A recent silent auction of professional sports photos helped boost the fundraising, he added.

“Typically, parents are shopping with their families. They’ll donate once during the campaign,” LumSmith said.

Cruise nights have car enthusiasts coming back every week, every year >>>from page 1 children.

Every weekend, the parking lot is filled with up to 500 cars. What started as a hobby for Farrugia has transformed into a charity car show attracting ‘motor heads,’ as they’re affectionately known, from across southern Ontario.

Cars from every decade can be seen in the lot where large crowds gather in awe to see a diverse assembly of hot rods, convertibles, coupes and more.

Bill Nagribianko has owned his ’71 Oldsmobile 442 for 30 years. He’s maintained the sharp, immaculate look of the car by keeping it clean and dry while seldom driving it.

“I’ve been here every year since it started,” he said. “It’s a great way to meet people and talk about cars.”

“Nineteen-ninety-one was the only year they were made,” he said about the Figaro.

“It was limited edition,

designed for the ’89 Tokyo Auto Show as a concept car.

It was retro-designed with a modern drive-train.”

When asked whether he liked classic cars better than modern cars, Howard smiled and said he liked all cars noting, “there’s something cool about every car.”

Street Classics holds a yearly swap meet where car owners can trade old, used parts they don’t need anymore. Last year’s swap meet had 80 vendors.

The Swap Meet is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 7 at Canadian Tire lot, 1608 The Queensway.

Vendor tables cost $10 while admission is free for public.

Albion Sanitary Trunk Sewer Rehabilitation Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study Notice of Study Completion The City ofToronto has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study to identify long-term solutions to address corrosion problems and low flow conditions in the Albion SanitaryTrunk Sewer (STS), and to provide for long-term sanitary servicing needs within the study area.

The City has accepted the consultant’s recommendations to provide for long-term sanitary servicing needs within the study area, while addressing corrosion problems and low flow conditions in the Albion STS. The recommendations include: • Abandon a few sections of the Albion STS that are inaccessible and/or cannot be maintained due to low flow conditions.

• Rehabilitate a few sections of the Albion STS that will stay in operation due to local sanitary sewer connections.

• Abandon a few sections of the Albion STS by diverting sanitary flows to the adjacent Humber STS by constructing new interconnections and maintenance holes between the two sanitary trunk sewers.

Background The Albion STS is a 3 kilometre long, 750mm diameter, trunk sewer that was constructed in 1960s. The Albion STS runs adjacent to the Humber STS through the Humber River Valley and the two sewers cross one another at a number of locations (see study area map).

Opportunities for Review The study was carried out following the requirements of “Schedule B” projects under the Municipal Class EA. King Street to close for TIFF red carpet, festival The Toronto International Film Festival is fast approaching, and with it comes road closures.

Beyond the usual red carpet hysteria, for the first four days of TIFF from Sept.

10 to 13, King Street between Peter and University streets, will close to traffic and require the 504 King streetcar service to re-route. The result will be a Festival Street with safe and easy pedestrian access to theatres, as well street-side patios set up for the occasion, organizers said.

During the closure the 504 service will split into east and west routes between Broadview and Dundas West stations, and will not service any stops on King between York and Bathurst streets, which instead will have replacement buses.

Lack of public exposure, funding issues affecting continuance of silent film festival

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Screening most of its silent, one-minute offerings on subway platform video screens, the Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) has provided a vehicle for aspiring independent filmmakers from all over the world.

This year’s edition – which takes place at the same time as the headlines-grabbing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) – is the largest in its nine years of existence and will feature work from more than 40 countries, on a continuous loop every five minutes for nine days. And with 1.2 million people making use of Toronto’s subway system every day there’s a lot of potential eyeballs to take in original and striking compositions while waiting for the train.

While TUFF has managed to score accolades for its unique format since its inception in 2006, this could be the last year for the festival, admits Executive Director Sharon Switzer. Pattison Onestop, the company which has employed Switzer to organize TUFF as well as other artistic output appearing on advertising space it owns within the subway network, recently pulled the plug on its regular programme Art in Transit which spotlighted various artists and themes relevant to the commuter experience.

In an interview last week Switzer, who is leaving Pattison, said she was doing all she could to ensure TUFF lives on.

“At this time the only thing we’re going to do is to try and keep TUFF going,” Switzer said. “I would personally love to be able to celebrate our 10th anniversary next year, but at this point we’re still working on it.”

“There’s no guarantee (TUFF will continue), but we are working on it and we all want to continue.”

Part of the issue with TUFF according to Switzer is its relative anonymity in a city with as many film festivals as Toronto which is not helped by a lack of promotional resources.

Etobicoke’s Murray Foster brings his 20-year dream to the big screen

LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Murray Foster’s fictitious band 20 years in the making is now leading a British invasion in Canada – but it took more than a hard day’s night.

The former member of Moxy Fruvous, current bass player for Great Big Sea and field director for Etobicoke’s Our Place Initiative can add writer and director to his hefty biography after bringing The Cocksure Lads Movie to life.

His musical comedy follows four English blokes – The Cocksure Lads – who come to Toronto to kick off their first North American tour and end up breaking up 10 minutes after they arrive.

Through the course of one drama-filled day and a series of misadventures, the lads learn what it truly means to be a band.

Foster said the whole idea of Lads came from a single parody of an early 1960s Brit-pop song he wrote with former Fruvous bandmate Mike Ford two decades ago.

Foster and Ford would leave quirky Beatles-esque song renditions on each other’s answering machines, and eventually began performing them live.

“The idea to shoot a video for one of the songs turned into ‘let’s shoot a short film,’ which turned into ‘let’s make a feature film,’” Foster said.

“Four years ago, I sat down to write the screenplay for it.”

On-the-job training With only a few short films under his belt, Foster had to teach himself the daunting craft of screenwriting from scratch.

“I hit my head on a door frame and it just happened,” he laughed. “I learned as I went along. I would literally Google “how to write a screenplay.” I read Syd Field’s book The Foundations of Screenwriting, which is like the Bible.”

Once the words were on the page, Foster had to find the right actors to bring them to life. It took more than two years to lock down the nonunion cast.

people with British accents, which made the process a little more painful,” he said. “I had to sit through innumerable terrible British accents.

It was cringeworthy. There were a few times I wanted to fall into a trap door out of embarrassment on behalf of the person.”

Foster ended up flying two of the leads, Lyndon Ogbour ne (Dusty) and Adam McNab (Reg), in from the U.K. The other Cocksure Lads, Luke Marty (Derek) and Edward Hillier (Blakey), are English ex-pats who have been in Canada since they were teens.

Dragon’s Den The film was financed through private investors, a Kickstarter campaign and Telefilm Canada. Foster also made a successful pitch on Dragon’s Den and shook on a $100,000 deal with two of the hosts.

“It was way scarier waking up the morning of Dragon’s Den than it was waking up the first day being a director for a feature film,” he said.

Murray said he quickly realized being the director required him to be the last line of defence in about 30 different categories.

“You’re basically responsible for everything,” he said.

“As of Week 2, I went in super focused and had my antennae up making sure everything was going as it was supposed to be going.”

Producer Darren Portelli made the movie work with

a limited budget. The crew filmed in 16 locations over 15 days.

He said it takes an army to put together a feature, and credits his team for the film’s success.

“You want people who are going to give 110 per cent, but they have to have just the right amount of experience,” he said. “That’s how I think we got the magic that we got. We found the right people at the right time.”

Both Portelli and Foster said they are proud of the end result.

On Aug. 5, The Cocksure Lads Movie was the No. 1 English-Canadian film at the box office.

“When Murray and I left the final colour correction session we were sitting there going ‘this is the movie that we wanted to make,’” Portelli said.

The Cocksure Lads Movie is currently screening at repertory cinemas across Canada.

Foster hopes to invade TV sets next with a Cocksure Lads dramatic-comedy series that will document the entire rise and fall of the band.

When he’s not creating music or movie magic, Foster continues to promote civic engagement in Etobicoke through the Our Place Initiative.

Distracted driving just got pricey Changes to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, intended to crack down on distracted driving and provide more protections for cyclists, went into effect this week.

As of Sept. 1, drivers caught on their phones will face an increased fine of $490, as well as three demerit points, representing a much harsher penalty for distracted driving which has overtaken drinking and driving when it comes to causes for traffic fatalities.

The new rules, which were initially approved before last year’s provincial election, will also officially raise the fine for “dooring” a cyclist to $365, plus three demerit points.

Cyclists riding without the proper lights or reflectors will also see an increase in fines, from $20 to $110.

DANGLING ANTENNAE SHUTs DOWN ROADS An unstable antenna resulted in lengthy road closures and frayed nerves for downtown commuters this week.

At that point, Bike Share Toronto – the downtown bike rental service being managed by the Toronto Parking Authority – will have set up more than a dozen bike stands across his west-downtown ward.

“All of Ward 19 will have Bike Share, save maybe Dupont and Dovercourt,” Layton said.

“We’ve given our sign-off on at least a dozen new locations slowly moving west. It’s a very aggressive expansion they’re planning.”

The sharing program has been operating downtown since May 2011, with a stable network of about 800 bicycles and 80 stations. It had its growing pains in the early years. But over the next year

it will be embarking on a massive expansion to the north, east and west, and increasing its presence in the downtown core.

Robust demand According to Maria Castita, Toronto Parking Authority vice-president of real estate development and marketing, the expansion is responding to a robust demand for the service, which lets members take unlimited short-duration rides from station to station across the downtown.

“Our ridership is up dramatically – up 23 per cent over the past year – and riders per bike per day are close to five during the optimum utilization months (the spring, summer and fall),” Castita said.

“The demand for bike share is very strong. The demand is growing. The acceptance is huge now, far more so than even a few years ago. I think I

won’t say the existing system is stretched, but it’s probably nearing capacity.”

Castita and her staff are working to expand the bike network by the spring of 2016; Castita said they hope to grow to 5,000 bikes in the next five years.

That means a search for viable sites is taking place now. The project is buoyed by partnerships. The Toronto Dominion Bank is a sponsor and Metrolinx has contributed $4.9 million to fund expansion.

The authority has also until recently been limited by supply. The initial bike stand system had been a hybrid model built by two different firms and is no longer being manufactured. The authority is looking for another manufacturer, at the same time as it is scoping out new locations.

Castita said the existence of bike lanes and other cycling infrastructure isn’t a prerequisite for the new stations.

Royal LePage Porritt to celebrate 60th anniversary When Ridout Real Estate went bankrupt in the early 1950s, Hector Porritt lost his job and no one would have guessed his new start-up would become the huge success it is today. Hector was a hard worker who had saved up a $5,000 commission over his years with Ridout when the company went bankrupt. Because they couldn’t pay out on the cheque, Ridout allowed Hector to take all of the furniture in the office. In 1955, Hector used that furniture, gathered up a few agents and started Porritt Real Estate.

In February 1962, Hector’s nephew Carl Porritt joined the team of about five agents. The group created a reputation for being honest and trustworthy in a time before home inspections and Internet searches. Porritt Real Estate agents did their research and kept clients informed of any concerns with homes on the market. This was the secret to their success. Clients told their friends and those friends told their families. The word spread that the Porritt group was the one with which to work.

In 1975, Carl and his wife Liz bought out the business, which had grown to include about 13 or 14 agents. Years down the road, the group made a few changes. Shelley Porritt joined the team in 1997 and Porritt Real Estate joined the popular Royal LePage franchise and expanded in 2012.

In January 2014, a second office was opened at 1500 Royal York Rd. to accommodate the growing

number agents, now up to over 60. Those agents help sellers and buyers all over Toronto and the GTA while finding a way to give back, a strong Porritt Real Estate philosophy.

The group is one of the oldest sponsors of a local softball team and helps out with baseball, lacrosse and hockey teams, day care centres and various school events. One big project for the Porritts is the Lake Shore Santa Clause Parade. Liz has coordinated the event and Carl has put on a big, red suit and spent time as Santa’s special helper on the most anticipated float for 21 years.

Shelley chose to focus on creating Christmas gift baskets for local women’s shelters over the past 15 years, donating 2,500 to 3,000 baskets annually. Carl and Liz were awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for their community involvement while the whole team has received a number of community awards.

Royal LePage Porritt Real Estate wants to thank the community for its support over the past 60 years. Without its loyal clients and friends, the business wouldn’t be what it is today. To celebrate the milestone, the community will be invited to a party and open house from noon to 4 p.m. on September 19. Police are looking for a young man believed to be responsible for break-ins in North York, Etobicoke, and Scarborough. Tendai Nyembe-Mafohla, 20, of no fixed address, is wanted for break-and-enters, theft, and mischief in North York’s 31 Division.

Police said he’s also wanted for additional break-ins in Etobicoke’s 22 Division and Scarborough’s 43 Division.

Nyembe-Mafohla is descr ibed as 5’10, 160 pounds, with black hair. He

has an Egyptian eye tattoo on his neck and upper chest.

Police are reminding the public to remain vigilant and to lock their doors and windows at night, noting there has been an increase in residential break-ins in the Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area and the Jane Street and Wilson Avenue area.

Bus driver faces luring, sexual assault charges A man known as “Bus Driver Al” faces charges after a 15-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on multiple occasions.

Police allege a TTC operator befriended the teen on social media in November.

They eventually met in July on a TTC streetcar he was driving.

The girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on three s e p a ra t e o c c a sions.

Allan Hrynkiw, 39, of Oshawa, was arrested Aug. 27 and was charged Allan Hrynkiw with three counts each of sexual assault,

Canada revenue fraud scam targets single female seniors Perpetrators threaten women with arrest if payment not made for erroneous unpaid taxes TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Toronto police are warning residents, particularly single female seniors, of a fraud scam where perpetrators posing as Canada Revenue Agency officials call and threaten jail time unless erroneous back taxes are paid — immediately.

Toronto police fraud Const. Cornelus Gutter said the fraudsters share personal information about their targeted victims in an attempt to appear legitimate. But that information is easily gained from victims’ social media accounts, like LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram, he said.

“They like to focus on elderly females,” said Gutter, who is with south Etobicoke’s 22 Division.

“They become quite aggressive trying to back you into forwarding them money.

They’ll say you owe Canada Revenue Agency money for unpaid taxes. They’ll threaten to send a car over to arrest

you. They tell you your credit history will be destroyed.”

A big tip off — perpetrators will demand victims

electronically transfer the funds or pay in prepaid credit cards — something Canada Revenue Agency would never

do, Gutter said.

“Canada Revenue Agency would never request your personal information over the phone,” the veteran officer said. “They would never ask you to get prepaid credit cards to pay overdue taxes.

They would never leave you voicemail messages with your personal information on it.”

Gutter urged anyone who receives the calls to ask the caller his or her name, office phone number and email address.

“Then say, ‘I’m going to call you back. First, I want to talk to the police or talk to my lawyer,’” he advised.

“Watch their reaction. They’ll get very angry, or they’ll just hang up.”

Most importantly, slow down on the phone and don’t commit to anything, Gutter advised.

“They’re relying on you acting in haste,” he said. “ Call somebody. Call the police.

Go to the front desk of any police station. Call your family lawyer. If you don’t want to call police or your lawyer, call a neighbour, a pastor, a friend, your son or daughter. Ask, ‘does this sound right?’

“If something seems out of place, there is a good chance, it is.”

Gutter said almost all complainants whose case he has investigated would not have fallen victim to the scam “if they had just asked questions or slowed down.”

The officer advised residents to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website at www.antifraudcentre.ca to learn more about known fraud scams.

“There are a hundred fraud scams. Visit the website.

Educate yourself about fraud,” he said.

It was all about having fun at The Hangar at Downsview Park where the full Toronto FC First Team came out to play soccer with more than 200 kids from 15 Toronto Community Housing communities across the city.

“This is a lot of fun to be able to spend time with the kids and to see smiles on their faces,” said Michael Bradley, captain of the Toronto FC. He was joined by his teammates to launch the fourth year of KickStart, a free eight-week soccer program for youth aged six to 12.

MLSE Foundation, in partnership with Toronto FC, Kia Canada Inc., and

Toronto Community Housing launched KickStart, which hires staff and trains youth mentors from under-served communities to deliver the program.

Bradley offered a couple of tips for the future soccer players as they went off into groups to practise basic skills of the game.

“To enjoy it and to have fun,” he said.

Greg Spearn, interim p re s i d e n t a n d C E O o f Toronto Community Housing Corporation, agreed, encouraging the kids to just have fun playing the beautiful game.

“This is the best part of my job,” said Spearn, who addressed the children at the launch event.

Toronto looking into hosting 2025 World Fair Lands would be an ideal site to host Expo 2025.

“There’s no event bigger in the world than an Expo, and the anticipated audience in terms of Expo visitors here in Toronto is 40 million.”

She pointed out that because Expo pavilions are increasingly modular, they could be moved from the Port Lands to other areas of the city and converted into new community centres, libraries, daycares and other muchneeded facilities.

Wong-Tam added that there would be plenty of additional impacts beyond the tourism dollars and the boost to infrastructure.

“We would get to define what Expo looks like, we would invite the international community to participate and enjoy our city and we would build trade and cultural connections,” she said.

Wong-Tam is part of a working group looking into the feasibility of Toronto making a bid for the 2025 World’s Fair (or Expo), pointing out that doing so would both showcase the city and serve as a catalyst for more infrastructure development, much as the Pan Am Games made infrastructure upgrades necessary.

“It can be a catalytic event that would help us revitalize the waterfront,” said the councillor, who noted the Port

would help speed up the naturalization of the Don River and could lead to additional housing – with associated transit benefits – in the Port Lands.

Toronto Board of Trade president and CEO Jan De Silva said businesses in the city would stand to benefit immensely should Toronto host Expo 2025. She noted the board of trade supports the idea of both a World’s Fair bid and an Olympic bid.

“When your focus is on a major world event, it’s an accelerator for getting major infrastructure projects going,” she said.

“The Olympics might have a bit of a higher profile, but the World’s Fair takes place over a much longer duration (lasting several months),” she said. “They would both let the city showcase itself and they would both bring a lot of people to Toronto.”

Toronto Hydro upgrades Cloverdale Mall’s electricity Hydro station and transformer built into the building dates back to 1956 TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Cloverdale Mall is the site of a multimillion dollar Toronto Hydro project to improve hydro reliability within the mall, and to approximately 800 homes in the surrounding residential area.

Toronto Hydro is replacing a hydro station and a transformer built into a room in the mall on The East Mall dating to when it first opened in 1956.

The mall’s transformer takes 27,000 volts from the Manby Transformer Station on Kipling Avenue, and converts it to 4,000 volts to feed the mall and about 800 homes in the area.

But the equipment is reaching its end-of-life, and technological advances means the station within the mall is no longer necessary to feed surrounding homes, Toronto Hydro said.

“The station has reached the end of its life,” said Steve Strugar, Toronto Hydro’s director of design and construction for west Toronto.

“The normal lifespan is about 50 years. The station is becoming less reliable and needs replaced.

“This project will convert the voltage and get rid of the station.”

The challenge – construction crews work on site during mall hours of operation.

“We’ve worked very hard with mall management to minimize disruption, ensure safety and not impact the business. We talk with mall management daily,” said Strugar, an electrical engineer.

Anne Vit, Cloverdale Mall’s general manager, concurred: “Normal operation continued for all stores and services during this entire process.”

The hydro infrastructure is buried below ground on the perimeter of the mall in its parking lot. That work, contracted out by Toronto Hydro, was expected to be complete by early September.

Cloverdale positions itself as “the hub of the community,” Vit said, and thanked customers and merchants for their patience.

“During this process, rest assured

that Cloverdale Mall is open regular business hours and that we have limited the disruption as much as possible to our valued customers,” Vit said.

“We thank our customers and merchants for their patience, as this project nears completion.”

The Cloverdale project is one of many Toronto Hydro mall upgrade projects, Strugar said.

“We worked with Sherway (Gardens) on their expansion, as well as Yorkdale and some other malls similar to Cloverdale in size,” he said.

“All these malls were built around the 1950s. Their (hydro) reliability has gone down a bit. But it’s not at the point that it’s all that severe.”

Next year, Toronto Hydro workers will install the electrical, both at the mall, and in the project’s surrounding residential neighbourhood, bounded by a triangular area between Dundas and Bloor streets west, The East Mall and Six Points.

receive hydro from about 300 overhead hydro poles. Underground hydro feeds only about 50 of the homes.

That residential hydro infrastructure is similarly about a half-century old, Strugar said.

Homes with underground hydro will see new trenches dug to enable new cable and wire installation next year. New poles and new transformers will also be installed.

“Residents will see brand new hydro infrastructure in the next two years,” Strugar said.

“It’s all about replacing the infrastructure to increase reliability to residential customers, and to the mall. They’ll get fewer outages, and outages will be shorter in duration.”

Construction in the residential area is not necessarily what residents might expect, Strugar added.

“People have this vision that we dig up the street like replacing sewer pipes and it’s this whole mess. But we dig only 20 to 30 feet at a time.”

Toronto Hydro has conducted similar infrastructure upgrade projects in Rexdale, Thorncrest and Markland Wood.

“We’ll be working in Etobicoke for the next 20 years renewing it.

We’re investing in Etobicoke in a big way,” Strugar said.

United Way launches $100-million fundraising campaign DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The newly formed United Way of Toronto and York Region has an ambitious goal in its inaugural fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $100 million.

This funding will help support 220 partner agencies in 10 municipalities from Toronto in the south to Georgina in the north.

That goal will be met by the communities working together, said the 2015 campaign cabinet chair Mark Wiseman, president and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, before hundreds of guests at the CNIB Ontario building on Bayview Avenue in Toronto Tuesday.

Guests included supporters and members of partner agencies from across York Region and Toronto.

“We truly are a united United Way across Toronto and York Region.

That’s the first time we’ve been able to say that, and that’s fantastic,” Wiseman said.

The work of the United Way will include more than 25,000 volunteers in more than 760 workplaces across the city and York Region.

The United Way expects 164,000 donors for the 2015 campaign. To help start this year’s fundraising campaign, Donald Guloien and Irene Boychuk, through the Guloien Family Challenge Grant, are contributing $1.2 million to match dollar-fordollar donations of $1,200 or more.

Toronto Mayor John Tory, a long-

time supporter of the United Way and a 2001 campaign cabinet chair, congratulated the two agencies for merging into one.

“This is an era in which collaboration is going to mean more than anything else in terms of our ability to collectively get things done,” he said. “This is how people live their

lives. They don’t care if they’re on the TTC or York Regional Transit, they just care that they can find a way to get to work.”

He said the same is true when it comes to helping people. Tory said Toronto relies greatly on the United Way to help make a stronger city and urges people to dig into their

pockets to contribute. He said this will help make an already good city, even better. “What makes us different here and what people noticed when they came here for the Pan Am Games, no matter how the city looks, even the sort of wobbly antennas and things like that, they noticed most importantly how we lived here, that we respect each other, we look after each other, we care about each other.

We don’t just say that. We actually do it,” Tory said. “The centre of that, the fulcrum of that is the United Way.” President and CEO of the United Way Susan McIsaac agreed with the need for unity.

“We’ve had this boundary for the last 60 years of our history, which was Steeles Avenue. We wouldn’t go north, they wouldn’t come south. But now, our donors and volunteers work across those borders, always with the mind, always with the thought we have to do what’s best for our region,” she said.

The United Way of Toronto and York Region is the largest privatesector supporter of social services in the Greater Toronto Area.

More than 200 young professionals will be taking aim at an ambitious fundraising goal – and at each other – when they take part in a charity dodgeball tournament at Steam Whistle Brewery next week.

The seventh annual Dodger Tournament will see teams squaring off against one another throughout an evening of fun and friendly competition, with proceeds going to the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation.

The event was started up

by St. Michael’s Young Leaders (SMYL), a group of young men and women who were looking to make a difference in the world.

“It was a good way for me to use the skills I earned in business to help a worthy organization,” said Tyler Howard, one of the founding members of SMYL. “We were all like that; we didn’t necessarily have a huge amount of money early in our careers to donate as much as

The group hosts three events a year – the Dodger, a charity golf tournament known as the Duffer and a yearly gala dubbed the Giver – but the dodgeball tournament is always the biggest of the three.

“Most of the teams are corporate-sponsored teams – banks, law firms – it’s kind of a Bay Street competition of sorts,” Howard said.

“Brad (Lawrence, another of SMYL’s co-founders) brought up the idea soon after the ‘Dodgeball’ movie came out, and I thought it was kind of hokey, but I’m glad I was wrong.”

The Dodger Tournament will take place at Steam Whistle, 255 Bremner Blvd., starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.
