The rooftop at Norseman Junior Middle School is in for a much sunnier future, thanks to recent repairs facilitated by the installation of 616 solar panels. The circa-1953 EtobicokeLakeshore school is just one of 311 Toronto District School Board schools that have undergone or are slated to undergo roof replacement and repairs as part of the Solar Schools Projects, said Trustee Pamela Gough. “One of the things that really excited trustees when we heard about (the Solar Schools Project) was that it was such a win-win from so many points of view,” >>>power, page 14

Zacharia Omar returned to his roots Tuesday where as a youth living in north Etobicoke, his

confidence and skills grew. As a teen, Omar had attended the MicroSkills Youth Centre tucked away at the far end of Westown strip plaza at Dixon Road and Islington Avenue.

Then it was tight, cramped quarters. The retail space had previously been a bakery. “A space like this is needed for kids. I’m telling you kids, ‘Believe in yourself. There

are a number of people here today who believe in you, who invested a lot of money,’” the newly married young man told a group of MicroSkills youth clients at the official opening of the
