Zacharia Omar returned to his roots Tuesday where as a youth living in north Etobicoke, his

confidence and skills grew.

As a teen, Omar had attended the MicroSkills Youth Centre tucked away at the far end of Westown strip plaza at Dixon Road and Islington Avenue.

Then it was tight, cramped quarters. The retail space had previously been a bakery.

“A space like this is needed for kids. I’m telling you kids, ‘Believe in yourself. There

are a number of people here today who believe in you, who invested a lot of money,’” the newly married young man told a group of MicroSkills youth clients at the official opening of the

expanded and fully renovated 1,900-square-foot MicroSkills Rotary Youth Centre.

Theatre company brings performances to the streets of Etobicoke’s lakeshore The My Lakeshore, My Home performance art festival is set to literally hit the streets of Etobicoke’s Lakeshore community this week.

Described by festival coordinator Heather Dick as a “multi-generational, multicultural, interactive performance festival”, My Lakeshore, My Home will be presented by Sirius Theatrical Company from Oct. 1 to 4.

All six 90-minute performances – scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. – will begin outside of the Mimico Centennial Library, 47 Station Rd. “That’s where the first piece will take place, and then the audience will follow characters from that first piece along the streets, where some pieces will be performed on the front lawns and porches of neighbours,” Dick said of the festival, which is billed as a signature partnership

Changing face of community reflected among Fairfield Park improvements City, resident’s group rallied to save land from development TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Fairfield Park’s massive redevelopment is a testament to a south Etobicoke community’s commitment to preserve its greenspace bolstered by a former city councillor’s support to make it happen.

Dozens of area children, families and older residents flocked to the expanded Islington Avenue and Bloor Street West park Saturday for its official opening.

“The park is now incredible,” said Monique D’Sa, soon to be past-president of West Kingsway Ratepayers’ Association (WKRA), which spearheaded the project.

“Pathways allow people with walkers and wheelchairs to enjoy them, children to ride their bikes, and still have space to walk. We really wanted a park with not just a new play structure. We really wanted a park for everyone — seniors, adults and kids.”

A Live Green Toronto grant funded 50 new trees to line the paths.

For decades, the small neighbourhood park had only open green space, a splash pad, slide and a dome play structure.

Former area councillor Peter Milczyn, now the area’s Liberal MPP, shared D’Sa’s enthusiasm for the vastly upgraded park.

School Board (TDSB)-owned lands it was selling to enable the park’s expansion.

“It’s a good news story,” Milczyn said this week.

“The greenspace is preserved and protected, coupled with the investment to upgrade the park with new playground facilities, benches and a really great trail system, which is something the community really wanted.”

“The demographics in the area are changing,” he said.

“A lot of young families are moving into the area. The community is really enjoying the park.”

A confluence of events in 2009 and 2010 provided the opportunity to expand the Lothian and Leland avenues park.

In 2009, TDSB declared Fairfield Seniors’ Centre parking lot and L-shaped adjacent lands surplus to its needs, and put the lands on offer to eight public agencies, including the city.

The city owns the seniors’ centre. In the late 1970s, the former city of Etobicoke purchased the centre from the former Etobicoke Board of Education, but only the build-

ing, not the parking lot and surrounding lands.

In March 2010, Milczyn told residents at a packed meeting the city needed to retain the seniors’ centre parking lot “at a minimum” to enable the centre to function effectively.

That’s when WKRA got involved.

“We asked what can we do to get the city to purchase the land,” D’Sa recalled.

West Kingsway and other area residents feared the community use of the greenspace could be lost to development.

Residents had learned, D’Sa said, of one developer’s pro-

posal to build single-family or townhouses on the public school board-owned land if public agencies, including school boards and the city, passed on it.

Residents circulated a petition and rallied.The city’s appetite for the property had been whet.

D’Sa and other residents advocated for the city to buy the lands before Toronto’s government management committee in June 2010.

“Every single day, you will find residents from early morning to late evening using this park for a variety of reasons,” D’Sa said. “It’s an outdoor exercise area. It’s used for recreation. Because of its great size and open space, there are at least four soccer clubs with players ranging from four to 84.

“It is used by families and friends for picnics and fireworks displays and to sit quietly on the grass. Our neighbourhood is growing with more and more homes, but not with more and more park space.”

That June, Toronto’s budget committee approved a $6.3-million purchase of the

land without debate.

Toronto City Council approved the purchase almost unanimously that August. A creative financing solution enabled the city’s purchase of the lands. Council approved a proposal that all community benefits and cash-in-lieu or parkland monies above five per cent collected from all Ward 5 developments would pay toward the nearly $5 million repayment of funds the city used to buy the lands.

WKRA began to fundraise to upgrade the park, although D’Sa acknowledged Milczyn secured most of the considerable development funding through developers’ financial contributions to the city.

“We’re very proud of it,” D’Sa said of the park. “It was a real community effort. The group of us on WKRA believed it could happen. But Live Green, Peter Milczyn and residents who signed the petition made it happen. The park is used by so many people.”

t was reassuring this week to hear work-to-rule job actions in public elementary schools across the province will not impact Remembrance Day ceremonies in the schools or the chance for local students to take part in literary and poster contests sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion.

John Smith, president of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto, told Metroland Media Toronto the ceremonies will go ahead. “We’re making an exception for Remembrance Day. All Remembrance Day activities will continue... We’re recognizing that and honouring that,” he said.

Smith added the annual Remembrance Day poster and literary contests sponsored by the legion for more than 50 years, will also continue in the schools.

The contests are divided in age groups ranging from grades 1 to 12 for the posters, and grades 4 to 12 for essays and poems. There’s also video and public speaking categories. The theme for all categories is remembrance.

While teachers certainly have a role to play in these contests, parents should also be encouraging their children to understand and honour the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives to keep our country free. If your child has an interest in art, poetry or writing essays, suggest they enter.

Along with being a positive experience for children, they also have the chance to win prizes and attend awards ceremonies at the legion. If they are national winners, their works will be displayed at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Filion book seeks to explain Ford phenomena Councillor pens his take on the Rob Ford story Rob Ford is a gift to storytellers, no doubt about it.

From the time he stumbled into the light as a rookie city councillor from Ward 2, Ford had a knack for presenting a narrative, or at least a hook for one.

First, he was the guy who famously spent $2 a year in his City Hall office budget. How’d he do that?

Then he would say awful things about all sorts of people. How’d he get away with that?

One day, against all odds, he got himself elected mayor and went on a toxic, drug-andalcohol-fuelled bender unrivalled in the history of municipal government, somehow maintaining an unimaginable level of popularity in the process.

The story is irresistible.

Former Toronto Star reporter Robyn Doolittle set it down in book form in the aptly titled Crazy Town, a book-length account of the Fords and her and the Star’s investigation into the now-infamous “crack video,” with some biographical talk.

Ford’s former chief of staff, Mark Towhey, is getting set to come out with a book describing his attempts to help Ford through his substance abuse issues.

And in a month, Willowdale Councillor John Filion will be presenting his own story of the story, The Only Average Guy: Inside the Uncommon World of Rob Ford.

As a point of full disclosure, Filion interviewed

me for the book he was researching last year as the municipal election was getting into full swing.

At the time, he told me it wouldn’t be a lurid tellall, but rather something more thoughtful – aiming for the ‘why’ rather than the ‘what.’ I wasn’t sure what to make of that then.

But based on some promotional copy sent around Tuesday, I think I see what he’s getting at.

The book takes, at its starting point, the football pool that Filion and Ford took part in and the uneasy water-cooler male bonding that reminded Filion nothing so much as the time at 10 years old when he invited an ungainly classmate home for lunch after church.

Rob Ford, theorizes Filion, is that lumpen boy grown large.

More intriguing, I suspect, will be the other ungainly 10-year-old men that Filion seems to argue

make up Ford Nation – that 30 per cent rump of voters who will support Rob and his brother Doug no matter what.

In an interview with former Ford Svengali Nick Kouvalis, Filion draws a picture of “partisan brains” contained mainly in the crania of heavy-set men with hard fathers. No one, he seems to suggest, will sway those brains from the Ford brand.

Those of us outside Ford Nation shouldn’t be smug, though: for pretty much every brain, the Ford narrative is impossible to look away from.

When it was in full swing, it was enough to transform the political face of our city.

And everybody – citizens, journalists and even city councillors – has a great stake in figuring out what shape that face has finally taken.

Crafting a future for aboriginal youth Furniture Bank wraps up its first apprenticeship program in carpentry, finishing and upholstery TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Hopes, dreams and future careers are being crafted in wood.

“I just want to do it all,” Shawna Montour said. “I found something I really like. I want to have my own business.”

This week, Montour, 24, is one of five Aboriginal youth who will complete an eightweek carpentry, finishing and upholstery apprenticeship at south Etobicoke-based Furniture Bank’s new furniture workshop.

The registered Canadian charity’s mission is to transfer gently used furniture and household goods donated by people and corporations to people who have recently transitioned out of homelessness, women and children escaping abusive situations, newcomer families and refugees.

The apprenticed youth are clients of Miziwebiik Aboriginal Employment and Training.

The apprenticeship is part of Miziwebiik’s 27-week carpentry pre-apprenticeship Aboriginal training program in partnership with George Brown College and the Mill Centre.

Jordan Yesno, 28, trained as a welder. He recently returned to his first love — wood.

“I grew up, up north. I was always around wood. I think I always knew I’d get into it,” he said.

The furniture workshop is another social enterprise for Furniture Bank, which has a long history of training and employing people with barriers to employment, said Dan Kershaw, Furniture Bank’s executive director.

While “the best Toronto can give us is on the (showroom) floor, including leather sofas and Ethan Allen furniture... a lot of what we receive doesn’t pass the dignity test,” Kershaw said. “We either

Si n c e t h e w o r k s h o p opened in April, participants repaired, refinished or repurposed 1,000 pieces of furniture soon to furnish the home of a person or family in need.

Currently, Furniture Bank serves 20 clients a day, but could help as many as 60.

Its clients have increased 30 per cent to date this year.

Tens of thousands of Canadians live without furniture.

Furniture Bank aims to change that.

“If you live without furniture, you can’t get on with your life,” Kershaw said. “You don’t have dinner with your family. Kids don’t have a desk to do homework. You can’t sleep rested for a job

interview.”

In the workshop, Montour and her colleagues repurposed and refinished a rustic, hand-hewn chair made of logs. It got a new burgundy leather seat salvaged from an

old doctor’s office lounger.

An Aboriginal dream catcher crafted out of thin layers of wood glued together and shaped into a circular form replaced some spindles on the chair’s back.

Wood-burned feathers on the chair’s front legs is the final touch.

“I’ve learned a lot,” Yesno said. “It’s fun, creative and rewarding.”

Veteran furniture- and cabinet-maker and finisher Peter Bray instructed the youth in furniture repair, types of hand finishings, even colour theory knowledge to apply stains.

Jackie Bray, his sister, is a professional upholsterer who taught students her trade.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. TTC stations to offer bike repair SmartTrack update to bypass Cyclists who need to quickly attend to a bike repair will now have the ability to do so right on TTC property.

The TTC announced this week it is adding space for small repairs to 10 stations, which will also offer tools such as Allen keys, screwdrivers, bike pumps and wheel chocks.

Ba t h u r s t , Da v i s v i l l e, Downsview, Dupont, Finch, Keele, Kennedy, Kipling, Pape and Spadina stations will be the first stations to have the repair stops.

The former head of the TTC’s largest union is going national.

Bob Kinnear was elected president of newly formed A m a l g a m a t e d Tr a n s i t Union (ATU) Canada last week during a convention held in Toronto. Kinnear, who stepped down over the summer from running ATU 113, the largest union representing TTC employees, captured 77 per cent of the

ATU Canada said its core mandate will be lobbying all three levels of government for better transit funding as well as participation in a national transit strategy.

DOCK WINS annual NXT CITY PRIZE wURBAN

The winner of the city’s annual NXT City Pr ize competition for innovative infrastructure design was announced last week during an awards gala.

Urban Dock, designed

by Clint Langevin and Ya’el Santopinto, was this year’s NXT winner. The project is a temporary dock that can be easily transported to city shorelines to create connections to the water and spaces for fishing, swimming and skating.

The creation beat out six other designs and the pair

received $5,000 plus an opportunity to see if their idea can become a reality through the assistance of city staff and other stakeholders.

Inside Out by the artist JR will be made up of faces of people who’ve gotten their picture taken this week at a special photo booth truck at Nathan Phillips Square.

With the assistance of volunteers, JR has assembled the portraits to create one collective work on the station wall surrounding Coxwell, which will be unveiled for Nuit Blanche, running from dusk to dawn starting Saturday, Oct. 3.

FAREWELLS REWELLS DONE WELL!

TTC board review this month RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The chair of the TTC’s board of commissioners was highly critical of a decision to release an update on SmartTrack before the board has a chance to see it.

Josh Colle said it was “crazy” the update, which is scheduled to be released to the city’s Executive Committee on Oct. 20, will not be seen by the TTC board.

According to the TTC, SmartTrack is considered such an integral addition to its network that transit commission planners have already identified 75 potential bus and streetcar connections to 21 of the future line’s potential stations.

“I think it’s crazy there are transit conversations which go on and don’t come in front of this board,” said Colle, who invited city staff to make a presentation during

Monday’s monthly TTC board meeting on rapid transit projects under study, a list that includes the SmartTrack plan.

“There’s been a SmartTrack conversation going on in these halls, but never once in this chamber in front of this board and I think that’s wrong,” he said.

During the meeting the board heard from city staff including deputy city manager John Livey who was accompanied by Toronto’s chief planner Jen Keesmaat.

As part of its approval of a study for SmartTrack, Toronto City Council instructed staff to provide an update to the mayor’s Executive Committee.

The report will not reflect ridership data currently under study by the city and the University of Toronto, which won’t be available until 2016.

When it’s released, the

data will show 100 per cent of transportation trips taken in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, some 12 million trips across 6.5 million households, and is intended to provide a baseline for existing ridership and allow for more reliable assumptions on the level of demand SmartTrack could attract when it opens.

“The ridership data is going to be very informative and we’ll see if people’s minds change,” Colle said. “Having information can’t be a bad thing, and hopefully it sets a baseline for all of our discussions around any expansion project.”

The board meeting also approved staff recommendations for informing future discussions on the TTC’s fare structure after it adopts the Presto card.

Power generated from roof project to go back into grid >>>from page 1 which sees the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) allow project partner School Top Solar Limited Partnership (STSLP) to install solar arrays on school roofs, in exchange for an estimated total of 4.3 million square feet of roof repair work – all at no cost to the board, which is already facing a $3.5-billion capital backlog.

“The rooftops are being repaired and replaced, which was direly needed, and hand-in-hand with that is the fact that with this partner, we have the chance to put these solar arrays on school roofs and make use of these large, flat surfaces that otherwise would not be used at all.”

In fact, according to the TDSB, the installed solar panels are expected to generate enough renewable energy to power upward of 4,250 households annually in Toronto by the time they’re fully installed on all 311 participating school roofs. That energy will then be fed into the local power grid as part of the provincial government’s Feed-In-Tariff program.

At Norseman, 3,071 square feet of the roof was replaced this spring to allow for the installation of a 144 kW rooftop solar array system. The

system consists of 616 solar panels (of 255 watts each), which was commissioned at the end of June, and is presently connected to the Toronto Hydro grid, where Gough estimates it has the capacity to power about 20

to 25 households.

Soon to follow in Norseman’s sustainable-energy-generating footsteps in her ward, Gough added, are Lanor Junior Middle School, Lakeshore Collegiate Institute, Etobicoke School

of the Arts and Lambton-Kingsway JMS – providing students with an “exciting demonstration of the TDSB’s commitment to sustainability on its campuses,” while simultaneously saving the public hundreds of thou-

sands of dollars in roofing costs.

“The TDSB has a very strong focus on sustainability. We’re one of the greenest – if not the greenest – school boards in Canada, and part of being sustainable is having a sustainable campus,” she said. “With this (Solar Schools) project, when the students look around them, they will see firsthand evidence of the board’s commitment to sustainability.”

That opportunity to educate students about renewable energy sources through the Solar Schools Project is also one that excites Gough, especially at schools like Norseman that are EcoSchools certified.

“It will be something they can study when they’re learning about electricity and when they’re learning about how their school is part of the EcoSchools Program,” she said, lauding Norseman as a “high-level” EcoSchool with a comprehensive recycling and composting program, as well as a commitment to Walk and Wheel Wednesdays.

“To educate the students that there are alternative energy sources that can be put into play, and for them to be able to see that their school is part of that – that’s very exciting, I think.

It’s a fantastic good news story.”

A bright, modern kitchen for making healthy snacks has a full-sized refrigerator, a cooktop and six saddle stools.

Staffers’ desks line the outer northern perimeter of the space. Black painted doors and door frames ground all the bright colours.

Youth chose the paint colours and the furniture – even the durable grey, faux-wood tile flooring, said Michelle Tinker, associate director of youth services with the centre.

“We love it. The kids love it.

Parents love it,” Tinker said of the youth centre’s transforma-

tion. “Every time someone comes in they say, ‘Wow.’” Where staff once served 50 young people daily, the bigger space is drawing 80 a day.

A joint $250,000 investment by the Rotary Club of Etobicoke and The Rotary Club of Toronto West created the new, renovated centre.

In 2013, the Rotary clubs initiated a youth legacy project. Some 25 organizations responded to the clubs’ request for proposals for funding. MicroSkills’ plan to expand, renovate and upgrade its youth centre got the nod.

“Your extreme generosity and leadership to make this amazing transformation happen is not just in the space,” MicroSkills’ Karen Webb told Rotarians. “But also in our youth to build a better future for themselves, their families and our community.”

Michael Bell explained Rotary is a group of professional business men and women “from all walks of life” who work with the humanitarian service organization “dedicated to giving a hand up to those in need in our community and around the world.”

The Rotary clubs fundraise primarily through two annual events: Toronto Ribfest is The Rotary Club of Etobicoke’s primary fundraising event; Its Youth Impact Awards is the primary fundraiser of The Rotary Club of Toronto West.

MicroSkills is a non-profit, multicultural, communitybased organization and United Way member agency providing settlement, training, employment and selfemployment services. It has empowered women, youth and newcomers to build better lives and careers for three decades.

Humber’s food truck teaches students about newest food trend Truck to operate at North Campus College students in Etobicoke will be treated to healthy lunch options on wheels, thanks to the recent roll-out of the Humber College Food Truck.

The first – and only – student/faculty-operated food truck of its kind in Toronto, Humber’s portable kitchen will give students enrolled in the college’s School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism hands-on experience

selecting menu options, preparing meals and participating in community events.

“The Food Truck provides experiential learning unlike any other postsecondary institute in Ontario,” associate dean Rudi Fischbacher said in a statement.

“For students who are interested in the latest ontrend food service, there is no better learning opportunity.”

The Humber Food Truck is slated to serve a variety of healthy options – salads, smoothies, entrees and des-

serts – and will operate at the B entrance of the college’s North Campus, located at 205 Humber College Blvd.

(Hwy. 27 and Finch Avenue West).

“This is a new venture for us...and I’m thrilled about the opportunities that this will provide for our culinary, nutrition, hospitality and event management students,” dean Susan Somerville said in a statement.

Humber College opens doors to new learning resource commons Humber College opened the new “front door” of its North Campus last Friday with the grand opening of the Humber Learning Resource Commons (LRC).

The 264,000-square-foot student learning and services hub is Humber’s new main entrance and a gateway to the college’s industry-standard labs and classrooms.

It is also Humber’s largest construction project to date, and a collaboration with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and Infrastructure Ontario.

“The Learning Resource Commons is a significant milestone for Humber because it exemplifies our commitment to put our students and their success at the heart of everything we do,” Chris Whitaker, Humber president and CEO, said in a statement.

“From the first day of planning to the last day of construction, student needs were of primary importance as this building came to fruition.”

The building features a “dramatic” six-storey staircase, ground-floor atrium, gallery and a new library and learning commons that provides study and social space.

Through the Learning Resource Commons, students will now also have a more streamlined access to centralized services, such as academic and career advising, registration, health, accessibility and counseling, student life and writing and math support.

Patient-centred care and earlier diagnosis a must for dementia strategy, says former nurse and neurologist

H

amilton resident Phyllis Fehr, 57, is a member of the Ontario Dementia Advisory Group, a group of people living with dementia that was formed last fall with the purpose of influencing policies, practices and people in dementia management.

A former ICU nurse who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s three years ago, Fehr offers a unique perspective on the challenges facing Ontario’s health-care system in providing quality care for the increasing number of people diagnosed with dementia.

Having experienced the healthcare system from both sides of the coin as a health-care professional and as a patient, she said she has some strong ideas about what the Ontario government needs to do to successfully tackle this significant challenge.

when she began noticing small changes in herself, notably forgetfulness.

She discussed her concerns with her doctor, but it wasn’t until two years later she received a working diagnosis of mixed dementia in the form of early onset Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia, a less prevalent form of dementia that occurs when abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein accumulate inside the brain’s nerve cells.

In the meantime, Fehr was having trouble multi-tasking and was drawing blanks on details and tasks that were once second nature. Doubting her abilities and concerned about providing the best care she could to her patients, she took a leave from her nursing career.

“It was affecting my work and I needed to figure this out,” said Fehr, who, despite being under the care of a neurologist and a gerontologist, had started to feel frustrated by the lack of an action plan.

With a diagnosis, she said she was eager to move forward on a course of treatment, but again was stuck in a waiting game.

“I’m a firm believer in treating something sooner than waiting.”

Fehr decided to take the matter into her own hands and started seeing renowned neurologist Dr. Sandra Black in early 2013.

“I’m very grateful for the intervention and understanding of Dr. Sandra Black. Once I started with her, she helped me understand what was going on, get on track and sort out what was happening.”

“We think of each of our patients and their families as having a unique and important story to tell,” explained Black.

“We try to partner with our families and share their load to ensure they know they are not alone in their difficult journey, as most dementias still lack definitive treatments.”

Fehr, who, as a health-care professional, said she appreciates the challenges doctors face to provide the best care they can while dealing with extremely limited resources.

“I realize there’s only so much time and money, and not enough staff and specialists. All of that needs to be improved,” she said, adding an earlier diagnosis would have changed the course of her life. >>>helping, page 37

PREVENTION

In Ontario, a lot of time, attention and money is being placed on getting an early handle on dementia, understanding how to better recognize its early signs and mitigate its symptoms.

Dr. Doug Munoz, a neuroscientist at Queen’s University, has focused his career on understanding how the brain controls eye movement and how brain damage or abnormalities, including those caused by dementia, can affect it.

“What we have is a toolbox for how the brain works,” he said.

Munoz is exploring the connection between eye movement and dementia. To do so, he’ll be measuring where the eyes go to study memory loss using videobased eye tracking.

“This study will be helpful in early detection. It will help us detect dementia earlier than we can now,” said

Munoz, who in his 20-plus year career has studied the correlation between eye movement and brain function for people of all ages.

EDUCATION

1 Keep to a simple daily and weekly routine. Get to know particular good times of the day and concentrate on getting things done during optimal hours.

2 Communication is key. Talk to family, friends and professionals about how they can help and accept offers of support.

3 Eat regularly. Make sure healthy snacks are on hand in case cooking is not an option. Be sure to get enough fluids.

4 Keep active. A walk every day will help with relaxation. Keep up with hobbies and visit friends. Stay connected to the community by joining local support groups and organizations.

5 Use visual aids such as to-do lists, a calendar or a reminder board to organize. Make a checklist of important things to do before going to bed.

6 Keep essential items such as glasses, keys and money in one place so that they can be easily found.

7 Write down memorable experiences and information in a journal or diary.

8 Keep a visitor’s book with names, contact details and short descriptions. Add photos next to important phone numbers and keep them by the phone.

9 Label cupboards, drawers and doors making use of colour and contrast.

“Initial engagement with the sector has begun,” she said via email.

“Ontario is gathering input from individuals with the disease, their families and caregivers, as well as health-care providers involved in treatment and support.”

Still in the early stages – and too early to speak to specifics as the provincial government wants to “get it right” – Woodward Fraser said the first step will be to develop a “co-ordinated, collaborative approach with input from patients and their care partners, all health-care providers, as well as organizations involved in supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia.”

Further, she said the provincial government has mandated Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris to champion the development of a provincial dementia strategy.

Fehr agrees a holistic and streamlined approach must be taken to treating patients with dementia to avoid unnecessary and often detrimental delays and frustrations.

“Currently, the process takes so long. It makes me worry about everybody else,” said Fehr, who is also a volunteer board member for the Dementia Network of the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network, which is working to find ways to work together with the government to understand gaps in the system and provide a better integrated system care for those with dementia.

“There has to be a way to streamline all the services under one umbrella to avoid reinventing the wheel every time. We need to be looking more at the big picture.”

Medical associations advocate geriatric dementia training D r. Petal Abdool, a staff psychiatrist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Geriatric Division, is confident she made the right career choice.

“This is an area I felt I could make a difference. It’s underserved and there’s no shortage of jobs,” said Abdool, who credits her sixmonth residency at CAMH for helping her choose a career in geriatric medicine.

Hired by CAMH shortly after completing her placement, Abdool serves as the head of outpatient geriatric mental health services.

She’s also a clinical lecturer and the undergraduate education co-ordinator, Geriatric Division Department of Psychiatry University of Toronto.

In this role, she’s charged with

impressing upon medical students the need for qualified health-care professionals to work with the aging population, as well as the personal benefits that come with it.

“Working with the elderly has been a great experience and very rewarding. It’s nice to look after other people’s parents,” said Abdool.

The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) is also doing its part to encourage doctors to consider working with the elderly, said its president Dr. Mike Toth.

“With an aging population, we know it is important to have enough physicians to care for seniors, including those with complex conditions such as dementia,” he said.

Association of Ontario (RNAO) is also helping its members provide better care for the elderly.

Michelle Acorn, the association’s co-chair, brings more than a decade of experience to the table working as a nurse practitioner caring for elderly patients.

With a special interest in geriatric care, Acorn – who serves as the lead nurse practitioner at Lakeridge Health in Durham Region – spends a fair amount of her time educating nursing professionals about caring for the elderly, making hospitals senior friendly and making geriatric care part of the core curriculum at post-secondary institutions.

She regularly speaks about her experiences offering her unique two-sided perspective, especially with newly diagnosed individuals and their families. One of her main messages is that “life isn’t over, but that it will change.”

“I really enjoy sharing my message and hopefully I’m making a positive impact,” she said.

WEG awards funds to two local charities Pathways to Education and Youth Without Shelter take the most votes in online contest Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) wrapped up its WEGcares Week celebrations by announcing two local charities as the winners of its 2015 Charity Challenge.

Pathways to Education and Youth Without Shelter were revealed to be the first- and second-place finishers in an online ballot Sunday, Sept.

20 during the 17th annual Woodbine Turf Races – a unique fundraising event at

Woodbine’s world-renowned E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

“We are very proud of what the Turf Races represent, a must-attend event that continually draws so many people together to support an outstanding cause,” said Bill Ford, WEG’s vice-president general counsel in a statement.

“Not only does it showcase Woodbine’s world-class racing facilities and acclaimed turf

course, it also provides participants with the chance to experience the excitement of horse racing while helping raise funds and awareness for valuable and valued charitable partners.”
