Two of the most-recent pages in Montgomery’s Inn’s 184year history have just been written.

Last Friday, inn officials joined by about 40 supporters celebrated the dedication of the Robert A. Given Library and the release of If Walls Could Speak — The History of the Volunteers of Montgomery’s Inn and Their Stories.

The library of hundreds of historic volumes is named after Given, a renowned Etobicoke historian.

In 2007, Given authored and released Etobicoke Remembered, his last comprehensive volume of Etobicoke dating from 25,000 years ago to 2007. His research became an all-consuming hobby that spanned 15 years.

Given was one of five men who guaranteed the Etobicoke Historical Society’s (ESH) mortgage on the inn before Etobicoke council signed an agreement in 1964 to pay EHS $38,800 for the property and to lease the inn back to EHS for $1 a year for 21 years.

Departing Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Trustee John Hastings was honoured last week for his integral role in bringing a popular and highly successful arts program to thousands of disadvantaged students in north Etobicoke.

The DAREarts organization – a national charity that uses the arts to empower thousands of at-risk kids with “the ability to ignite positive change in themselves and others” through “Discipline, Action, Responsibility and Excellence” (DARE) – recognized the two-term Etobicoke North trustee at a special luncheon event last Thursday at Merlot Restaurant. “( John is) always focusing on what’s best for the children with passion and energy,” DAREarts Founder and President, Marilyn Field said in a statement of Hastings, who lost his TDSB seat to Michael Ford (nephew of Mayor Rob Ford and Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford) during the Oct. 27 municipal elections.

“He is always looking towards the future and dreaming big for the kids, including ideas on job training, international cooperation and a virtual arts school.”

A longtime advocate for DAREarts, Field said Hastings “powerfully and persuasively” lobbied to have the arts program brought to his students in north Etobicoke after he was introduced to its wide-ranging benefits at the 2007 DAREarts showcase in the spring of 2007, just months after he was first elected as Ward 1 trustee in December 2006.

Outgoing Toronto District School Board trustee John Hastings gets into character with students at a DAREarts educational activity.

In the eight years since, Hastings estimates the DAREarts program has reached as many as 2,400 students aged nine to 15 from 16 different schools in marginalized communities across his ward.

“I think DAREarts creates a spark in our kids. Their tagline is ‘igniting change’ and it’s absolutely true – I’ve seen it for myself,” he said, noting that he’s accompanied north Etobicoke DAREarts students on arts and theatre field trips everywhere from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, to many of downtown Toronto’s art galleries and other cultural institutions.

“It opens up their minds and I think it’s a big mental health builder, because we have I-don’t-knowhow-many kids who live in public housing; who live in a distressing physical situation, in my estimation.

With DAREarts, they get out of their neighbourhood, and then they get out of themselves.”

Lauding him as “an inspiration”, DAREarts commended Hastings for his dedication to the program and its students. Not only is he known for sitting with children during field trips – both on the bus

and throughout the activities – to ensure the students are enjoying their time, he has also attended every DAREarts annual showcase at North Albion Collegiate Institute (NACI) “to proudly support the children’s achievements and interact with their parents”, and he is also a regular guest at the annual DAREarts Leadership Awards, “where students from his area have consistently won one of DAREarts’ six Leadership Awards since the inception of the program in Etobicoke.”

DAREarts will continue to benefit from Hastings’ ‘contagious enthusiasm’ and ‘sterling leadership’ in future, thanks to a continuing partnership that will extend far beyond Dec. 2, when Ford will officially swear in as Hastings’ replacement at the TDSB. For his part, Hastings said he’s looking forward to continuing on with DAREarts as a volunteer. “...anybody who diminishes the arts can’t appreciate what they can do for young kids who don’t have very much.”

Policies in need of consistency I

t’s been 16 years since six municipalities were formed into the City of Toronto.

And yet, more than a decade and a half after amalgamation, Toronto is still dealing with numerous policy discrepancies, bylaw inconsistencies and service disparities in its various neighbourhoods.

Rules governing anything from snow removal to mechanical leaf collection to rooming house bylaws can be markedly different depending on what area of the city you live in.

It’s completely understandable why York SouthWeston Councillor Frances Nunziata wants to approach the budget committee to explore extending mechanical leaf collection to all parts of the city – including her ward. Currently, the service is only available in certain pockets of Etobicoke, Scarborough and a small part of York. How is it fair that residences mere blocks away in the same city can our view receive disproportionate levels service?

Time to tidy up of It’s reasonable to expect there to be a transition period from discrepancies, such a complicated process as disparities the megacity amalgamation was. But now, in 2014, we’re into the sixth term of Toronto council in its current format. It’s past time to tidy this up.

In the coming term, Toronto’s new council must make a sincere effort to build more consistent policy throughout the city – one that reflects a more unified entity that is Toronto. Councillors must understand there will be differences between putting forth their priorities from their constituents and looking at those priorities through a city-wide lens.

Governing a city with the size, complexity and diversity of Toronto is a challenging task. But a city that has more consistency in its policies can take pride in a more equitable distribution of services and still respect the unique characteristics of its 140 neighbourhoods. Providing equal access to the benefits that come with being a resident of this city does nothing to change those valuable characteristics.

The effects of amalgamation were felt strongly when it happened in 1998. The effects of amalgamation are still a hurdle today in this city. They will continue to be a hurdle as long as we fail to view Toronto as one unified entity.

A more unified Toronto is a stronger Toronto.

The sooner the city unshackles itself from a hodgepodge of policies the sooner it will be prepared to deal with present challenges.

Polite revolution against Ford turns one

A

year ago this week Toronto council did a very bold, and also quite fearful thing. In a meeting specially called for the purpose, council voted to dethrone the mayor of the day, and select a new leader from among their own.

It is the closest a government in this city has come to open revolt – and one might hope, the closest it will ever come to happening again.

Looking back over the past year, it’s fair to say Toronto’s experiment with revolution has been at least a measured success.

Part of that may be that the roots of this particular revolution dovetailed so well with our national identity.

Not so much a Quiet Revolution, it was a Polite Revolution against a Fordian tyranny of Bad Behaviour.

david nickle the city unwittingly stoked that revolution during the meeting where council cut the mayor’s budget and stripped him of his powers, hollering at audience members, telling sex jokes and at one point knocking councillor Pam McConnell to the ground without so much as an excuse-me-ma’am.

Norm Kelly was a true Father of the Revolution as he embraced his enhanced role as deputy (and defacto) mayor. He visited his shell-shocked council colleagues one by one, said his please-and-thank-yous, and even as the Mayorin-Exile’s spiralling drama continued in the public corridors outside their offices and during parts of the monthly council meetings.

Things got boisterous on the campaign trail, but things do, and Torontonians clearly were only willing to have so

much of it.

While some may have hankered for the old, hootand-holler approach to municipal governance, most turned away from Rob’s brother Doug Ford and cast their votes with the one candidate on the planet who could give even Norm Kelly a few lessons in table manners, the forcefully pleasant John Tory.

This more than anything is evidence that the Polite Revolution has taken hold on at least a semi-permanent basis.

As it turns out, Torontonians are not only fond of the traditional Canadian values of Peace, Order and Good Government: after a year of exposure to it, we’re also fond of just a little peace and quiet.

Timothy Eaton became a dairy farmer to supply his own soda fountain A bout 1891, Timothy Eaton had a problem: he needed a plentiful supply of fresh cream for the highly successful soda fountain that operated all summer in his downtown store, but city dairies were not meeting his requirements.

So Timothy went shopping for land where he could raise his own dairy cows and meet his own demand. bought shaver land First he bought 100 acres of land from Peter Shaver’s estate on the west side of Hwy. 27 between Bloor Street and Burnhamthorpe Road, and then he bought another 100 acres from Thomas Montgomer y’s estate on the east side of the highway. Soon he was also using the milk and cream in his grocery department and restaurants.

Timothy Eaton died in 1907, but the Eaton family continued what he had started here.

cattle and hogs, and they pickled pork in huge vats on the farm. Finally fresh vegetables were added to the farming mix.

They purchased more land and by 1944, the farm had grown to 369 acres.

W h e n Ti m o t h y f i r s t b o u g h t Pe t e r S h a v e r’s land, School Section No. 2, known affectionately as the “Swamp School”, was located in the southeast corner of the lot. Eaton gave the school’s trustees title to a generous piece of land, making an entire corner school property.

At that time, there was a movement to rename the school “Eatonia”, but the old name survived.

In 1909, the Eaton Family offered to pay $10,000 to macadamize Dundas Street from the CPR crossing at Royal York Road to Etobicoke Creek. Hwy. 27 was sometimes referred to as “Eaton Road”, and the Toronto Suburban Railway,

which operated along Dundas Street from 1917 to 1931, had a stop at Hwy. 27 called “Eaton Farm.” In 1918 the school trustees officially renamed the school “Eatonville”, a name that has stuck, and indeed the whole area became known as Eatonville.

Sherway goes green with new roof Sherway Gardens is going green in more ways than one. The current expansion project includes the installation of a green roof, which will be the largest vegetated roof on a single, free standing commercial structure in the Greater Toronto Area.

“Our new 102,000 square foot green roof will help slow stormwater runoff from the roof, benefitting both the city and the environment,” said Andy Traynor, general manager of Sherway in a statement.

Once all the gifts are collected, a wrapping party will

be held on Dec. 15 to prepare all the packages for delivery

by Santa’s helpers at ESS and Trillium Health Partners.

Lindsay King, ESS’s supervisor of client services, said not only does her staff then deliver the gifts to seniors at three local assisted-

living seniors buildings in Etobicoke, but they also make sure to take the time to have a little visit with each senior. “(The seniors) are usually really excited when they see our staff coming around with the gifts, and there’s a nice companionship component to the delivery, too. They’ll sit down and open the gift with the seniors and have a visit,” she said, noting that ESS has been a partner with the Be a Santa to a Senior program since 2010.

“It’s a great way of thanking those seniors in the community, and it’s just a really nice gesture for them. Many are isolated and have very limited family, so it’s a nice dose of holiday cheer for them.”

To those who make the Be a Santa to a Senior program possible – those members of the public who generously purchase gifts for local seniors in need – both Enright and King are thankful.

“During this season of giving, we encourage shoppers to buy a little extra for a local senior,” said Enright.

“Your gift – and more importantly the visit that comes with the delivery – could make their holiday season.”

“Robert Given Library is the best small reference collection in Etobicoke,” Avigdor wrote.

INNovators past president and member-at-large Wendy Gamble agreed.

“I think that library is the best-kept secret in Etobicoke,” Gamble said. “It’s just a wealth of information; a treasure. It’s preserving our history.”

The citizen-led, membership-based INNovators formed in 2011 in response to the city’s dissolution of city-appointed museum advisory boards. It is incorporated through the Ontario Historical Society.

If Walls Could Speak gathers the mostly handwritten personal stories of 40 volunteers and two staff Sue Pye and Liz Driver, who is now the director and curator of Campbell House Museum.

Catherine Campbell, the inn’s program officer, headed the book project, two years in the making. The late Joyce Barkhouse, typed all the entries for publication.

Campbell interviewed Randall Reid, the inn’s recently retired program officer, who had worked at the inn his entire adult life, for the book’s first entry.

Reid recalled starting and cataloguing the library, then one shelf.

“Randall had this wealth of information,” Campbell recalled. “I grew up in a small town in Nova Scotia around

people telling me stories. I’d sit with the inn volunteers and drink tea and they’d tell me stories.”

The die was cast. Inn volunteers’ recollections became a book.

Montgomery’s Inn has a dedicated corps of approximately 80 volunteers, many who have served for decades.

Gordon Sykes remembered his late wife, Catherine, in an entry.

In 1974, Catherine spent weekdays and weekends traveling around Toronto and across Ontario taking detailed notes of how other museums operated. She and another residents proposed the inn include a tearoom.

Catherine volunteered for more than 15 years, as the inn’s sole cookie supplier from 1975 to 1988. In 1990, her husband estimated she made more than 4,000 cookies by hand.

In 1974, Joyce Hack joined other volunteers working one day a week, then two days a week the following year, stripping, refinishing, cleaning and cataloguing furniture in the former Fifth Street courthouse, now the home of LAMP Community Health Centre.

The inn restored to 1836 opened as a museum in 1975.

Hack recalled volunteers borrowed costumes from Black Creek Pioneer Village for the inn’s opening. Later, Hack would research styles and fabrics appropriate to the

mid-19th century and make curtains and garments, as well as costumes for volunteers to wear.

“When I walk through the Inn today, it pleases me to see the tables Mary and Barbara refinished and that beautiful bed that I stripped of four coats of paint (grey, pink, green and white)...”

Hack wrote.

“I enjoyed the companionship of these interesting, eager, generous, talented people who were so successful in honing skills that put Montgomery’s Inn on the map of Ontario Museums’ must-see list.”

D u r i n g i t s h i s t o r y, Montgomery’s Inn has been a 161-hectare family farm, a tavern, an inn, a family home, a rental farm, a church and a museum.

The inn continues to innovate to maintain its financial health.

Its community room, tearoom and Briarly Room are available to rent for meetings and social gatherings.

Thirsty Thursday is held the last Thursday of each month 7 to 10 p.m. in the restored 1847 tavern serving Irish stew, fresh baked bread, live traditional music and a cash bar.

“Our aim is to preserve the inn as an active museum and also as a gathering place for the community,” said Gamble.

“With the food, and the farmers’ market, we certainly do that.”

Etobicoke-born mom and author Jennifer Tyler Lee has just released a book, The 52 New Foods Challenge.

The 316-page book published by Penguin Random House is a week-by-week guide to lead families on a cooking adventure and “to help families end battles over broccoli and boost variety by making it a game,” Tyler Lee said.

Families are challenged to introduce 52 new foods in 52 weeks. Kids choose the new food and help cook it one night a week with mom and dad.

The book also contains 150 recipes. It is available at Indigo, Loblaws and WilliamsSonoma.

Parents across Canada and the U.S. are struggling with the same issue, Tyler Lee said.

But there is an even-greater problem at work — a massive health epidemic, she said.

“At the heart of it is nutrition. Home cooking is at an all-time low. Processed foods at an all-time high. The result equals obesity,” Tyler Lee said.

“This is of great concern because researchers have seen diets of children being related to risks of cancer and other conditions later in life.”

But parents can take action to protect their children’s health, the San Franciscobased author said.

“We need to get kids to eat real food, and set them up for a lifetime of healthy eating habits. The conventional wisdom is not working. We need a fresh, new

approach.”

That’s where Tyler Lee’s book can be a valuable resource. “ T h e 5 2 Ne w Fo o d s Challenge is a simple stepby-step guide to help busy parents change the way their families eat—one new food at a time,” she said. “It is designed to get you and your children involved in a transformative process to change what you eat. Elevator mishap at Union Station causes headaches for commuters The TTC has closed an elevator at Union Station earlier than anticipated following a freak construction mistake.

The University line lift was expected to close early next month to allow for the construction of a new elevator and escalator but crews working on the station’s renovation “inadvertently” cut through the elevator’s hydraulic cables rendering it inoperable.

Muslim leaders advise their own community to report suspicious activity to the police >>>from page 1 that includes basketball workshops and tournaments.

Farouk said the dinner raised funds to match a $500,000 grant that the mosque received last year from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for the gymnasium.

He said the 8,000-squarefoot state-of-the-art facility is slated for completion by the end of December.

Area youths are expected to be dribbling down the courts early next year.

Farouk said the gym will contain two professional basketball courts, electronic scoreboard, retractable seating, weight and fitness area, sauna, two washrooms and change rooms.

The facility will be staffed with coaches and trainers and is accessible to local schools and the community.

“We want to keep the youths away from gangs and from trouble,” he admitted.

The popular Rexdale Boulevard mosque is now undergoing a massive expansion. It is one of the larger mosques in Toronto with a congregation of 10,000 worshippers.

Shaikh Imran Ally, Imam of the Taric Islamic Centre, told attendees to remain on alert and call police if they see young people from the community acting suspiciously.

“We have to be more vigilant as a community,” Ally

warned. “We have to contact the authorities when we see something and not remain silent.”

Dr. Munir El Kassem, Imam of the London Islamic Centre of Ontario, accused a few “trouble makers” of making it difficult for everyone in the community.

He said Muslims in Canada suffered another setback as a result of the senseless deaths.

“The community is suffering because there are those who believe that these young foolish boys represent Islam,” El Kassem told attendees.

“How do you stop this foolishness?”

He said more sports facilities and activities for young people are needed.

“There are individuals who are buying into this lifestyle and are travelling overseas,” El Kassem said.

“It has gotten to the point that we have to do something for the protection of our own children.”

CPLCs looking to rebrand, change the way they work MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Volunteer committees that work with Toronto’s police know you probably haven’t heard of them, and they want to change that.

“We could be more than what we’re doing,” Bruce Erskine told a meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board recently.

Erskine is a member of a Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), a civilian group attached to each police division in the city.

The CPLCs, as well as Community Consultative Committees, which deal with cultural or religious minority groups, all meet monthly, or at least four times a year.

A report CPLC representatives including Erskine presented to the board a year ago said the committees “are not well known,”

adding many “are missing out on the opportunity of reaching out to the larger population,” and have “lackluster relationships” with the police force and each other.

Erskine, who works with the CPLC for 22 Division in Etobicoke, said members of different committees decided a few years ago “to get over the apathy that we were feeling at the time” and help each of the committees do a better job of helping police do theirs.

After writing the report, the volunteers want to produce a guidebook for the committees that identifies best ways to work and makes them more visible in their communities, he said.

A draft of the guidebook should be ready for each group by February, said Tim Kocur, a volunteer for the CPLC 52 Division, south of

Bloor Street downtown.

Kocur and Erskine said volunteers want to consult with leaders and rank and file members of the force in 2015, and want to launch a rebranding of CPLCs, one which Kocur said will probably include a new name.

At the meeting, the board didn’t approve their request for $25,000 to help with the rebranding. Though he welcomed the idea, Scarborough Councillor Micheal Thompson said he could get a logo for CPLCs designed by volunteers.

Thompson noted the report doesn’t speak about young people, and said many CPLC members are seniors and professionals, but many matters they deal with involve local youths.

Erskine said the group is considering creating a “youth component” for all the committees.

Classic tale of A Christmas Carol begins its annual tour in Toronto Intimate performances presented by Humber River Shakespeare Company The Humber River Shakespeare Company presents its 6th Annual tour of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol this December, with stops at three unique venues in Toronto.

This year’s annual production of the classic holiday tale will make stops in Etobicoke at Montgomery’s Inn, in Bloor West Village at St. Paul’s Church Runnymede, and in North York at Black Creek Pioneer Village.

Armed with exquisite costumes, masks, puppets and a trunk full of story-telling treasures, Humber River Shakespeare’s five enormously talented actors will bring to life the timeless tale of greed, ghosts and salvation.

New this year, Humber River Shakespeare has added a few daytime performances especially for school groups.

Job-seeking men, women find windfall with charity Workshops teach job seekers etiquette, grooming and how to prepare for interviews TOM GODFREY etg@insidetoronto.com An Etobicoke non-profit agency is providing hundreds of marginalized men and women with new clothing, personal care products and even cell phones to help them with job interviews as they get back on their feet.

Up to 600 job seekers yearly are taught interviewing skills and how to groom and present themselves during day-long workshops that are held three times a month at Windfall Basics, on Connell Court.

Etobicoke image consultant Cindy Roemer has helped to groom and coach about 2,000 of the men and women as they prepare for job interviews.

Roemer, who works as a program manager at Windfall, helps clients to improve their etiquette, grooming and

The agency, that has been around for 22 years, distributes more than 900,000 items of clothing and basic needs yearly that exceeds $28 million in value.

Windfall obtains new surplus clothing from major

retailers due to changing stock, seasons or style. That clothing is sorted and sent to a network of men and women shelters across Toronto, where they are distributed free to the homeless or those in need .

A large section of their 8,000-square-foot warehouse

contains racks of new clothing and other gear that are donated to job seekers.

“A lot of the people we work with do find jobs,” Roemer said. “I would say more than 50 per cent of them get jobs in their fields.”

One woman, who identified herself as Yvonne, was almost in tears to receive a gift bag that contained cosmetics and some costume jewelry after a recent workshop.

Program co-ordinator Julie Young said every client receives more than $700 in clothing and personal care items when they leave.

Members of the public are invited to visit Windfall to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the program on Nov. 28 from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

The charity also operates Windfall Brides Boutique, that sells new wedding dresses at reduced prices and provides training to women in running a small business.

Windfall has won awards from the Toronto Community Foundation and in 1996 was voted as one of the best business charity partnerships in Canada.

Annual Metro Toronto Rotary TV auction begins on Friday Mark A. Cadiz eym@insidetoronto.com The 34th annual Metro Toronto Rotary TV auction officially kicks off Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.

The two-day auction ends Saturday at midnight and will see rotary clubs of East York, North Scarborough, ParkdaleHigh Park, Scarborough Twilight and Toronto Humber come together to raise money for GTA communities.

North Scarborough Rotary Club member Kevin Manuel, chair of this year’s auction, is co-ordinating 260 volunteers for the event.

“Last year the event raised $95,000.

“This year we are hoping to make over $100,000 by the end of Saturday evening,” Manuel said.

There are a lot of deals to score during the televised auction.

Burglary victims can look for Honest Ed’s partners with Bad Boy Grand opening of new superstore set for Thursday, November 20 their stolen property online th

Photos posted of stolen goods in Project Yellowbird ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police have unveiled a web page in an effort to return thousands of valuables that were stolen during a string of residential break-ins in affluent areas of North York, midtown and south Etobicoke.

“We just can’t put it out on display, there’s just too much.

There are over 4,000 items,” Det. David Zajac said Tuesday.

“We felt the best way to do it is to catalogue, to photograph everything properly and then put it out onto a website.”

More than 50 break-ins have been linked to the investigation, dubbed Project Yellowbird.

The probe began Dec. 22 when police from North York’s 32 Division responded to a residential break-and-enter in which a yellow Porsche

Carrera and an Audi S4 were stolen.

“They were driven (away) during the ice storm,” said Zajac. “We started looking into this group and then finding out that 53 and 22 divisions had the same break-and-enters and high-end auto theft.”

The stolen Porsche was recovered in Lithuania. Police have recovered 22 other vehicles and returned them to their owners.

On Aug. 28, police executed a series of search warrants and recovered property believed to be worth more than $5 million.

Six men and three women were charged. Five suspects remain in custody while the others are now out on bail.

The break-ins took place in the Hoggs Hollow neighbourhood, the Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue area,

Rosedale and The Kingsway.

Stolen items that were recovered include a $400,000 watch, pearl necklaces worth more than $100,000 and First World War medals.

“We have a 150-year-old Bible, we have watches with engravings on them,” Zajac said. “It’s just a matter of finding the rightful owner.”

Police had said suspects would break into homes by forcing the front or back doors or by throwing bricks through windows.

Canada Border Services Agency and police from York Region, Niagara Region, Peel and Halton assisted in the investigation.

Two true Toronto originals are set to pair up in an Annex location already well-known to the city’s bargain hunters.

Lastman’s Bad Boy Superstore is set to move into a portion of Honest Ed’s left vacant with the departure of music store Sonic Boom Records.

According to Bad Boy CEO Blayne Lastman, the partnership between his company and the Mirvish family-owned Honest Ed’s was a natural fit. “(Honest Ed’s) approached me because the Mirvishes thought it was a great idea,” Lastman said.“I loved the idea as soon as I heard it. We met to discuss it the next day and had (an agreement) the day after.”

The 14,000 square foot location will feature furniture, appliances, electronics and mattresses. The new location

will cater to the residents living around the franchise’s latest location.

“We’ll have some urban Bad Boy in there – some condo and apartment-sized furniture,” he said.“It’s our first time in the downtown core.”

He noted, however, that the store would also feature goods designed to appeal to homeowners, pointing out that while many downtown residents are keen on spacesaving furniture, others want larger pieces to fill homes.

“It’s a great area, the Annex,” he said. “The average household income is over $100,000 and the average house is worth more than $1 million.”

The chain was founded by Mel Lastman, who built it up before entering into municipal politics. Blayne Lastman took

over the reins in the 1990s and has expanded the franchise across the GTA and beyond.

The Honest Ed’s site will be Bay Boy’s 11th location, though its stay at Bathurst and Bloor comes with a time limit. The Honest Ed’s store was sold last year to developer Westbank Properties and it is expected to shut its door for good perhaps as soon as the end of 2016.

“We believe it may take a little while longer for (Westbank) to start work on whatever they’re going to build there, so hopefully we can be there a little longer,” Lastman said.

The store will host a grand opening sale at its new location, 782 Bathurst Street, starting at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, with more than $50,000 in giveaways.

War Amps’ devices helps dancer excel in life CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Dance enthusiast Tiffany Stummer can do it all – be it jazz, ballet, tap, acro or lyrical, the 12-year-old Humber Valley Village JMS student doesn’t miss a step, thanks to a positive attitude and a little help from the War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) program.

Born with a left arm deficiency, Tiffany has benefitted from the CHAMP program practically since birth, said her mom Sue Stummer.

“As soon as she was born, the War Amps jumped right in and told us ‘we have a program, we have an organization, we’re here for support,’” she said, noting the national charitable organization picks up the extra costs of Tiffany’s artificial limbs that aren’t covered by her parents’ insurance.

“We got her first device when she was probably about six months old – just

when she was first starting to move around and crawl and that kind of stuff. Now she has devices for dance, for kayaking so she can hold a paddle, for golf when her dad takes her to the driving range, and for skipping. War Amps has been there 110 per cent for everything – it’s great.

It’s meant a whole new life for Tiffany.”

For dance, the CHAMP program has helped to equip Tiffany, who has been dancing since age five, with a special, flattened “palm” device, which helps her with everything from tumbling moves to doing a plié at the ballet bar.

“The palm has helped because it’s a flat surface to land on, so if I’m doing handstands, or ballet to hold onto the bar, it just helps me a lot,” said Tiffany, who dances out of Innovative Rhythm Dance Studios on Evans Avenue and hopes to attend Etobicoke School of the Arts to study dance in high school two

If the rave reviews from her

mom and other parents are any indication, Tiffany won’t have any trouble pursuing her ballet dreams.

“She gets up on that stage and it’s show-stopping, as far as I’m concerned. And afterwards, I always get so many parents coming up to me and saying ‘she’s so great!’” said Stummer, noting the high praise from other parents is a reminder of just how special her daughter’s achievements are.

Not only does War Amps provide financial support for Tiffany’s physical well-being, but its also hosts peer counseling and regular weekend conferences and seminars for families of children who, like Tiffany, live with the challenge of amputations.

Stummer said the gatherings “touch on everything you could possibly need” – from helping teens cope with their amputations, to teaching parents of child amputees how to deal with different issues and challenges that can come up.

And for Tiffany, the conferences allow her to meet and interact with kids her own

age dealing with the same challenges and triumphs she does every day.

“There’s a lot to do at the seminars, and there’s so many different kids that go there that you didn’t even think could have that deficiency,” Tiffany said. “So, it’s just nice meeting everyone and seeing how they deal with life.” your support To continue helping children like Tiffany thrive, the CHAMP program needs the support of the public, said Danita Chisholm, CHAMP’s executive director.

Board of Health to look into controlling sale of energy drinks to young people

Toronto’s Board of Health will be considering the possibility of banning the sale of energy drinks to children and youth over the objection of beverage industry and convenience store lobbyists who say the evidence in favour of a ban is too scant.

The board voted unanimously to have a study conducted on ways to police the sale of the highly caffeinated beverages on the advice of the Ontario Medical Association.

The beverages – Red Bull being one of them – contain a higher level of caffeine than regular colas but far less than brewed coffee.

Association, made that point as he addressed the Monday, Nov. 17, meeting of the Toronto Board of Health, and also attempted to argue that Health Canada had given energy drinks the OK when it came to children over the age of two.

“The problem is that this motion (to request a report) was based on ignoring Health Canada’s formal position,” Goetz said.

Health Canada has only given a Temporary Market Author ization, which acknowledges there are questions about the health impacts of the beverages on young people.

The board dismissed Goetz’ concerns, and sided with Scarborough Centre Councillor Glenn De Baereamaeker, who requested the report along with board of health chair and St. Paul’s Councillor Joe Mihevc earlier this year.

The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) will now be able to keep its shelter doors open through the winter, thanks in large part to a $50,000 donation from a local animal welfare organization.

The “huge” and “very, very generous” donation from the Eric S. Margolis Family Foundation was announced Tuesday night, said EHS spokesperson Krissy Petluch.

“This donation was a big, big step for us,” she said in an interview with The Guardian Wednesday morning.

“We’re very, very happy that we’ll be able to stay open throughout the winter now, but we’re still pushing and we’re still going to continue to fundraise, because it’s a constant effort for us, and our needs are continuing to grow as we take in more and more animals.”

EHS launched its Save Our Shelter (SOS) campaign late last month in the midst of a distressing funding crisis.

“If our financial situation does not improve immediately, we will be forced to close our doors after more than 25 years of serving our community, and saving thousands of animals from abuse,

neglect, and abandonment,” a letter written by EHS President Pia Lauretti and sent out to more than 1,500 shelter supporters in late October, read. “We want to have the opportunity to save even more animals.”

The Eric S. Margolis Family Foundation – a charity organization determined to preserve animal rights and animal welfare, whose scope is global, with an emphasis on Canadianbased charitable organizations – responded to EHS’ appeal after seeing the shelter featured on a local animal-focused TV show, Petluch said.

“What we’re focusing on now is our monthly donors and our one-time donations, just to keep us going long-term,” she said, noting that, so far, the SOS campaign is off to a great start, but more donations are needed.

“We have a lot of people calling in wanting to be monthly donors, which is great because we really rely on that steady income.

We are 100 per cent donation based and we are 100 per cent volunteers, so it’s great to have people sign up.”

MUNRO, Aubrey (Chic)

After a long and fulfilled life, Aubrey (Chic) Munro (age 97) passed away on November 13, 2014 and has now joined Edith, his wife of 62 years.

While we are sad at losing him, we are happy they are together again.

Chic was well known in the neighbourhood and leaves many friends in the dairy business, at Alderwood United Church, and 101 Legion.

Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, he grew up in Montreal and joined the Royal Montreal Regiment in September 1939. He met and married Edith Hicks while in England and brought her to Montreal. In 1960 they moved to Alderwood where they remained. He was a gentleman, and a humanitarian, and lived his life by example, treating other people the way he wanted to be treated.

He will be greatly missed by his son Bob (lla), daughter Cheryl Reid (Roger) and grandson Trevor (Melissa).

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Alderwood United Church, Christian Blind Mission or a charity of your choice.

Condolences can be left at www.RidleyFuneralHome.com.

Memorial Service will be held Nov. 29 at 3:00 at Alderwood United Church, 44 Delma Drive, Etobicoke.
