IMO raises $400k for area youth Funds to build new gym at mosque to keep kids actively engaged TOM GODFREY tgodfrey@rogers.com More than 800 members of the Muslim community packed an Etobicoke hall for a dinner that raised $400,000 to add a gymnasium with two basketball
courts to their Rexdale mosque to keep area kids out of trouble and busy with sports. The Woodbine Convention Centre was filled with families last Saturday night for a gala fundraiser by the International Muslims Organization (IMO)
that was called “Reclaiming our Islam from the Misguided.” Some members of the community said they have been ‘targeted’ by irate residents following the recent deaths of Canadian Armed Forces Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant
Officer Patrice Vincent. Their killers were men who may have been recent coverts to Islam. IMO president Omar Farouk said the gym will attract young people from the Rexdale area who are interested in sports, >>>muslim, page 18
Two of the most-recent pages in Montgomery’s Inn’s 184year history have just been written. Last Friday, inn officials joined by about 40 supporters celebrated the dedication of the Robert A. Given Library and the release of If Walls Could Speak — The History of the Volunteers of Montgomery’s Inn and Their Stories. The library of hundreds of historic volumes is named after Given, a renowned Etobicoke historian. In 2007, Given authored and released Etobicoke Remembered, his last comprehensive volume of Etobicoke dating from 25,000 years ago to 2007. His research became an all-consuming hobby that spanned 15 years. Given was one of five men who guaranteed the Etobicoke Historical Society’s (ESH) mortgage on the inn before Etobicoke council signed an agreement in 1964 to pay EHS $38,800 for the property and to lease the inn back to EHS for $1 a year for 21 years.
