The 40 Etobicoke residents who make up the core of Our Place Initiative’s (OPI) Community Action Group haven’t wasted any time getting down to business since forming in late February.

Rotary Club of Toronto West president Patti Wright carried the flame down Montgomery Road early last Thursday from Montgomery’s Inn to Etobicoke Collegiate Institute (ECI).

Etobicoke Collegiate student members of the new ECI Interact Club, sponsored by the local Rotary club, joined more than a dozen Rotarians on the short trek.

“We’re here to celebrate the progress against polio; that it has been driven out of India, something many experts thought would never happen,” Rotary District 7070 governor Brian Thompson said outside Etobicoke Collegiate.

“If we keep pushing, we can rid the world of polio by the end of this decade in my opinion.”

Wright handed over the torch to Paul Ferri, past vicepresident of the Rotary Club of Toronto-Forest Hill.

Critics had charged polio could never be eradicated from India “with its low standards of sanitation and hygiene,” reported a May 2013 article by T. Jacob John and Vipin M. Vashishtha in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.

Until the early 1990s, India was “hyperendemic” for polio, “with an average 500 to 1,000 children getting paralysed (sic) daily,” the article reported.

A Rotarian in Madras, India conceived the idea of the flame two years ago to commemorate India’s poliofree status.

Five years ago, India had been home to nearly half the global polio cases. Last year, the World Health Organization certified India polio-free after three years without a case of the life-threatening and crippling viral disease.

In February, Wright, a lawyer, and Thompson joined Rotarians from Canada, the U.S., Switzerland and Australia on an immunization team for India’s five-day National Immunization Days.

lion vaccination administrators.

Etobicoke Collegiate’s Interact Club encourages students to think and act on global concerns. The Rotary club chartered it earlier this year. Currently, it has 12 members.

“We’re looking to get more students involved in the international community,” said Interact president Liam Hancock, who plans to study policy analysis and public management at Carleton University this fall.

Paige Reid, 15, joined the club after hearing her teachers talk about it. She has been involved with the charity, Free the Children.

“Just knowing I have the power to make a difference in the world, to do something to make someone’s day or to make a difference in someone’s life is crazy to me,” she said. The torch continues through Canada, then Nigeria, on its way to the 2015 Rotary Convention in Sao Paolo, Brazil next month.

Golf tourney honours fallen firefighters Close to 200 firefighters from across Ontario gathered at Etobicoke’s Markland Wood Golf Club to honour colleagues who have given their lives in the line of duty.

The tribute, held Monday, raised nearly $25,000 to support affected families.

“Every year this event raises

funds for the families of firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives in the line of duty,” Kevin Connolly, president and chief executive officer of the Fire Services Credit Union and chair of this year’s golf tournament, said in a statement.

“This is the first time that we have invited firefighters from across the province to add their voice to this special day,” Connolly said.

Pan Am Torch comes to town G

et ready Toronto, the Pan Am Games Torch Relay is coming to town starting this Saturday.

The flame was lit Monday in Mexico and is now on its way to Toronto. It splashes down with a special arrival ceremony celebration at Harbourfront featuring a float plane, canoe and a ‘mystery’ first torch runner.

For more details on this weekend’s plans for the torch, see our feature story on page 32.

The torch relay goes from May 30 to July 10, and will touch Canadian communities from the Atlantic to the Pacific. More than 130 communities will be visited during the 41-day torch relay, with some 3,000 runners taking part.

For local residents, most of the excitement will begin July 4 in the final days leadour view ing up to the opening ceremonies on July 10 of the Toronto 2015 Pan Games.

by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield for a community celebration before heading out across Canada.

During its journey, the torch will visit Richmond, B.C.; Calgary, Alberta, during the Stampede; Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Canada last hosted the Pan Am Games in 1999; and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

It’s in Ontario, though, where the torch relay will have the biggest impact. Virtually every corner of the province will be visited, with community celebrations planned at numerous locations.

As host city, Toronto will have a number of celebrations – with events planned specifically for Scarborough, North York, and Etobicoke in early July.

On June 28, the torch will be in the city for the annual Pride Parade.

Also, a unique event is set for July 4 at the Prince Edward Viaduct (also known as the Bloor Viaduct).

The viaduct will be lit up to create a multicoloured effect on the Luminous Veil, which encases the famous bridge.

Community groups including the Danforth BIA, which has incorporated its annual Thrill of the Grill event into the celebration, will be on the bridge to welcome the torch and the relay runners. Metroland Media Toronto will also be a big part of that celebration as we are hosting games and events for kids on the viaduct.

The status of symbolism at city hall

S

ymbolism counts for a lot in Toronto politics: certainly for more than it should.

The Gardiner Expressway, which is really just a strip of elevated concrete and asphalt used by a few of Toronto’s many commuters, is also a symbolic battleground for suburban motorists and downtown pedestrians.

Next month at council, that potent symbolism will go up against measly facts and mere expert opinion and more than likely end in council spending an extra $500 million to build new elevated ramps from the Gardiner to the Don Valley Parkway.

Such is how it goes when councillors play to their home crowd: from a cynically political perspective, everyone on council will be a winner no matter the outcome.

Of course, not all political symbolism at city hall is a slam dunk.

david nickle the city Some of these debates can be treacherous ones indeed – and some of them are very small.

On Tuesday, Mayor John Tory’s generally right-ofcentre executive committee spent a good portion of a short meeting dancing around a symbolic leghold trap set by generally left-of-centre councillors Mike Layton and Glenn De Baeremaeker.

The two had put forward a member’s motion to have council establish an “environmental bill of rights.”

The motion contains many “rights” that very few voters would want to pass up: a right to breathe and drink clean air and water and eat safe food; access to nature, to know about pollutants and the right to take part in decisionmaking.

It also lays responsibility on council to promote these rights, and by the by, points to matters of policy that also have great symbolic value for political brands.

Council would have to get behind cycling, walking and transit as a preferred way to get around.

No fools, the committee members were not having any of it.

Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong made it clear that his constituents weren’t fond of pedestrian scrambles and other things they believed promoted congestion.

Councillor David Shiner suggested his elderly constituents wouldn’t take kindly to being encouraged to walk and bicycle.

But they weren’t about to vote it down - because oh, the symbolism of that would have been an embarrassment. Other municipalities – more than 50 of them according to

Layton – had passed a similar bill of rights already.

So the committee did the sensible thing, and sent it off to the interim city manager for a report to come back late in the fall.

Layton was disappointed at that prospect and, laying cards on the table, expressed hope it could come before the federal election.

Because after all, it would be really something if Canada’s largest city could make it clear that its policies and practices were all aimed toward preserving the environment, just as Torontonians were set to join their fellow Canadians passing judgement on the environmentally dodgy Conservative government record. Now that would be what you would call symbolic.

Torch relay starts Saturday The Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games’ torch arrives in Toronto Saturday for the start of the 41-day Torch Relay.

A float plane carrying a lit flame inside a lantern will touch down in Lake Ontario near Toronto’s waterfront, where it will be handed to an Elder of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, who will then travel by canoe for a ceremony by Chief Bryan LaForme at Harbourfront Centre.

The flame for the torch was lit Monday, May 25 during a ceremony at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico.

The torch will then be passed to several bearers before Col. Chris Hadfield will run with it into The Distillery District.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario.

The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet.

The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.”

But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.”

Nonetheless, homeowners like Anita P. don’t see a prob-

lem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

Personal Support Worker shares in ‘the human experience’ at hospice

Hospice Palliative Care Ontario recently presented Logwiniuk with the Frances Mo n t g o m e r y Pe r s o n a l Support Worker Hospice Palliative Care Award.

“I feel like a midwife. I’m transitioning them from life to death. I’m easing the passage, which might be difficult and painful,” the Etobicoke woman said. “I’m learning. I’m being. I’m finding myself evolving.”

Logwiniuk received the award for her work as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) caring for the clients of Dorothy Ley Hospice’s 10 private-care suite residential hospice in south Etobicoke.

She has worked there for six years.

The Dorothy Ley Hospice serves people and families living with a life-limiting illness or loss with community and residential programs that meet their physical, emotional, spiritual and support needs “to help them live life to the fullest,” the hospice said.

Its residential hospice is designed to feel like a home, complete with comfortable furniture, high ceilings, art on the walls and large windows to the outdoors flooding every space, particularly each care suite, with light.

The hospice receives some government funding, but relies on donations. Its annual Hike for Hospice recently raised more than $80,000 to benefit its programs.

Her relationship with each client is unique based on their individual needs. It is about “sharing the human experience,” she said.

“You have to see yourself as either the family or the person suffering. You have to understand it,” she said.

“You can’t say you know what they’re going through because you don’t. But you have to be conscious of it. It’s important not to judge.”

Some people want to be partner in every decision of their care, she said. Others are simply happy to receive care.

“Some tell you what they want to wear, to eat, how long they want to lay or to sit. Other people love being attended to. Everybody is so different,” she said.

known to be a jokester kept insisting Logwiniuk was putting on her Polish accent.

“People die as they lived,” she said, simply.

Reading Viktor Frankl’s iconic 1946 volume, Man’s Search for Meaning, which chronicled his experiences in an Auschwitz concentration camp during the Second World War, changed her perspective on death and dying, she said.

approach with clients: “People feel safe with me.

“We cross this intimacy barrier. We develop deep yet very quick relationships,” she said.

“They have to trust you right away as soon as they’re admitted. They have to believe we’re in it together; that they’re in safe hands.”

Registered Practical Nurse Wanda Cook said Logwiniuk communicates well with colleagues about individuals’ needs.

“She interacts with individuals, their families and with her colleagues in a compassionate, caring and professional manner,” she said.

Mo s t o f L o g w i n i u k’s clients are elderly. Her youngest client was 21. On average, people stay at the residential hospice 18 days until their death. Some die within hours or days of being admitted. Others are released to go to a hospital, long-term care facility or the home of a loved one.

“Love is an action; it’s not just a feeling,” she said.

“Personal Support Workers’ work is important.

I’m proud of what I do. I have a sense of being summoned.

It gives you strength.”

The 13-kilometre ride east, accompanied by Toronto police’s bicycle unit, will commence at Six Points intersection at 11 a.m. and will conclude at the parkette across from Castle Frank station.

Wilson and Lewis, who take time from their very full-time jobs at Penguin Random House to organize the event, are encouraging Torontonians to ditch their cars and see and hear the city on two wheels.

“I have a car, but I choose to ride my bike. I appreciate my city so much more that way. I don’t drive through the city. I drive in it,” Wilson said.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore MP Bernard Trottier, who will be attending the ride, said he supports the initiative based on its two-fold objective.

in central Etobicoke, and said there is a lack of connectivity for cyclists needing to go downtown or to the waterfront safely.

“We have all of these great things, but we don’t have protected bikes lanes to get to them,” Wilson said.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn, who will be speaking at Six Points Saturday, said new cycling infrastructure will be part of the re-development.

“Part of the road reconfiguration was to eliminate all of the on-ramps and off-ramps in order to create ‘normal’ roads accessible to pedestrians,” he said of the Bloor-Dundas-Kipling interchange.

“Separated from traffic and pedestrian sidewalks, you’ll have approximately 10 foot wide raised bike lanes for cyclists,” Milczyn said.

These new lanes will help Wilson’s dream of having a fully connected city come to fruition.

“Let’s make it so all of the signs that say ‘bike lane ends’ are removed. That’s my goal and my hope,” Wilson said.

People with or without bikes are encouraged to attend Saturday’s book ride, as the stops are accessible via the Bloor subway line.

To keep that ‘buzz’ going, the Community Action Group’s Environment subcommittee is set to host the Etobicoke Butterfly Festival this Sunday (May 31) from 10 a.m. to noon on the grounds of the Lush Cosmetics factory at 35 Jutland Rd. All are invited to the morning event, which will feature kids arts activities, a honey tasting, face painting, seed bombs, tours of the sustainable plants on the Lush grounds, and, perhaps most importantly, a milkweed planting and giveaway.

“We’re going to be planting two kinds of milkweed – one that’s necessary for Monarch butterflies to breed and another that’s necessary for them to feed,” said Foster,

noting that 40 milkweed plants will be sown on site at Lush during the Butterfly Festival, while another 100 plants will be given away to attendees to plant in their own gardens and yards.

“Monarch butterfly populations are down early 90 per cent here in North America, because people have been chopping down milkweed thinking it’s just a weed with no purpose, but it’s actually the main habitat for Monarchs.”

There will also be several information tables set up at the Butterfly Festival: one offering information about OPI’s Community Action Group and how residents can get involved, and another informing people of the dangers of neonicotinoids, a class of neuro-active insecticides that is believed to be one of the causes of the decimation of bee populations.

Meanwhile, the Community Outreach subcommittee of OPI’s Community Action Group hosted a park cleanup at James Gardens Park back in April and are already hard at work planning its next event – a community corn roast tentatively slated to take place in south Etobicoke in August.

“The plan is that we’ll have roasted corn, some art activities for the kids, and a fun event we made up called ‘Lob the Cob’,” Foster said.

“Again, we’re starting small with this one, too, but we’re hoping these events will draw lots of people out and bring in some new members.”

Last but not least, Foster said OPI’s Transit subcommittee has embarked on a petition in support of Motion 11 – a motion passed by city

council in March requesting that the TTC study two potential transit initiatives in south Etobicoke: the relocation of the Humber Loop and the creation of a dedicated streetcar right-of-way to Exhibition Place.

“We’re blasting that out right now, hoping it will pressure the TTC to recommend (Motion 11) and council to actually fund it in next year’s budget,” Foster said.

More victims sought in historic sex assault case Police in north Etobicoke’s 23 Division believe there may be more victims connected to a historic sexual assault investigation that saw a 45-year-old Toronto man arrested and charged on 15 counts in March 2013.

In a statement released on Tuesday , police state that “recent developments in the investigation have led police to believe there may be other victims” in the case, which

allegedly spanned 20 years from 1990 to 2010.

During that time, police allege the accused sexually assaulted multiple girls and women aged five to 35 in the Toronto area. It was also reported that drugs may have been used to carry out one of the sexual assaults.

Juan Moran, then-45, was arrested on March 30, 2013 and charged with: seven counts of sexual assault; five

counts of sexual interference; sexual exploitation; invitation to sexual Juan Moran touching; and forcible confinement.

Police have now re-released Moran’s photo and are asking any other possible victims to come forward.

Catch 22 seeks Kevin Williams

“A sexual assault is any form of unwanted sexual contact,” Tuesday’s police statement reads. “It includes, but is not limited to, kissing, grabbing, oral sex and penetration.”

Canoe Heads are back for charity paddle and portage Toronto is hardly known for its canoeing opportunities, but a group of some 130 hardy types will be seen portaging through the southern portion of the city and paddling through Lake Ontario this weekend to help kids in need.

The event, dubbed Canoe Heads for Kids, raises funds and awareness for Amici Camping Charity, an organization that helps send at-risk kids to summer camp.

“We’ve been around for eight years and in that time it’s grown from a small group of eight individuals who went out on a lengthy 12-hour portage and paddle and raised $10,000 to where we are now, expecting 130 participants to raise about $150,000,” said Canoe Heads for Kids founding chair Andrew Medland.

Medland noted Canoe Heads has become an easier trek for participants in the years since its inception.

Instead of portaging 20 kilometres before paddling back to the downtown core, participants now travel a far more manageable seven kilometres each way.

“Doing 20 and 20 (kilometres portaging and canoeing) was a bit more of an iron – it made for a half day,” he said. “This is a lot more accessible.”

To date, Canoe Heads for Kids has raised some $415,000 for Amici, ensuring 415 kids who might never otherwise experience camp life have a chance to do so.

That, Medland said, makes a far larger difference than many realize.

“For a lot of people, summer camp sounds like a fun two weeks, but for kids who wouldn’t normally be able to go to camp, it changes the framework of their lives, changes their perspective on what is possible for them,” he said.

Amici Camping Charity Executive Director Kate Horton said the event ensures kids aged seven

to 17 have a chance to attend overnight camps accredited by the Ontario Camps Association.

The kids are recommended by social workers, teachers and community agencies across Ontario, with most of the campers coming from the GTA. “One thing that sets us apart is that we sponsor kids for as many summers as they wish to return to camp,” she said. “It’s about creating a long-term, sustainable relationship between kids and camp.”

Lifelong benefits The experiences they gain at camp will provide lifelong benefits.

“They develop leadership skills and creativity, and learn to innovate,” Horton said.

“They also learn how to appreciate the environment – how we impact the environment and how to preserve it.”

Those are skills many living in urban centres may not be able to learn without charities like Amici and events like Canoe Heads for Kids.

Toronto resident Max Campos, 12, will be returning to summer camp this year thanks to funds raised through Canoe Heads, and is looking forward to reliving the experience.

“My favourite part was ziplining into water, but there were a lot of fun activities there,” he said of his time at Camp Onandaga.

“It’s a unique experience and I think every child should be able to go to camp.”

His mother, Veronica, said the difference camp made in her son was nothing short of amazing. ‘ After she lost her job, Max was worried about her and began withdrawing socially and having bad dreams.

“He became much more active and sociable, like he used to be,” she said. “Camp was like a miracle for him. My son came back again.”

Canoe Heads for Kids will see participants gather

at the Harbourfront Canoe and Kayak Centre at 11 a.m. Saturday.

They will hear some brief remarks from current and former campers before embarking on a portage west along Queen’s Quay and onto the Martin Goodman Trail.

They will take a break at Sir Casimir Gzowski Park before launching their canoes into the water and paddling back to the downtown core.

he Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will be off to a splashing start when the torch touches down in the city Saturday for the start of the 41-day Torch Relay.

The Pan Am flame was lit Monday during a traditional ceremony in Teotihuacan, Mexico at the Pyramid of the Sun, which was organized and hosted by the Mexican Olympic Committee (MOC).

A float plane carrying a flame lit inside a lantern will touch down in Lake Ontario Saturday, where it will be handed to Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, who will then travel with the lantern by canoe to shore for a ceremony conducted

by Chief Bryan LaForme at Harbourfront Centre.

The first torchbearer – whose identity is being kept under wraps – will then leave Canada Square at Harbourfront Centre, where the torch will be passed to several bearers before Col. Chris Hadfield will run with it into The Distillery District.

Family oriented celebrations will be held at both Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay, and The Distillery District, 55 Mill St. Festivities will begin at Canada Square at 2:30 p.m., featuring a soundtrack produced by local musical

Celebrations will continue in The Distillery District at 4 p.m., and will include performances by Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra, The Chimera Project, Dance Migration and Jasmine Denham, who will perform the official song of the Games live for the first time. Hadfield is expected to arrive with the torch around 5 p.m.

The torch will then head to communities around Thunder Bay before making its way back to Toronto to take part in Pride Parade events June 28. It will leave Toronto once again and return July 4, where it will

remain in the city Canadians.”

Many events are being planned around the Torch Relay, including The Thrill of the Grill Saturday, July 4 on the Prince Edward Viaduct.

The Danforth BIA will host the sixth annual event fundraiser from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the east end of the viaduct, where the Luminous Veil – the suicide barrier rods – will be lit for the first time.

“We usually hold this event at Broadview and Chester, but because the bridge will be lit, we moved it to there,” said Jennifer Jones, vice-chair of the BIA, adding the top half of the bridge will remain permanently lit.

The Thrill of the Grill, co-hosted by The Food Ne t w o r k’s c h e f Ly n n Crawford and Tommy Smyth of HGTV’s Sarah 101, will feature a handful of chefs serving up edibles including ribs, corn, and beer.

“I hope this is the start of many events on the bridge,” said Jones, adding the BIA was instrumental with the initial funding and advocating for the Luminous Veil and lighting.

As for being part of Pan Am Games celebrations, she said residents might be slow to warm to the sporting event, but once it arrives it will be fully embraced.

“Any city that is hosting an event like this has a chance to really turn the dial on the city up a notch,” Jones said.

exdale’s Andrea Basta has been selected as one of 3,000 torchbearers slated to carry the Pan Am flame on its 41-day journey leading up to the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

The 31-year-old executive assistant, who is set to carry the torch on June 24 during the Richmond Hill leg of its 20,000-km route, called it a “huge honour” to be chosen as a torchbearer.

“So, when I got the email saying that I was selected to represent my company, it was wonderful. I’m really excited.”

Basta, who plays on her office softball team, said while both she and her “super-athletic” fiancee are looking forward to getting out to root on Team Canada this summer, she’s also excited to see Toronto’s transformation

as it takes on the role of hosting a world-class sporting event.

“I’m excited to see how we can all come together – all the volunteers, and all the different large companies in the city, and everybody who’s taking time out of their day and their lives to support this event, to have everything run smoothly, and to just show our pride,” she said.

“It’s quite amazing with all the different cultures and everyone coming from all over to compete in these Games. I don’t remember Toronto hosting a big event

like this before...it’s super exciting.”

With Basta’s torch run just a few weeks away, the proud Etobian said she’s hoping to get in a little practice before the big day.

“It’s coming up fast, and with the pressure on, I hope I don’t fall down or take a dive and hit my head,” she laughed.

City councillor wants TTC to help music fans get to shows A Toronto city councillor wants the TTC to do a better job of providing transportation to major music festivals.

In a letter to the TTC board, Mike Layton notes major music events such as the Field Trip and the Toronto Jazz Festival, generate hundreds of millions of dollars to the country and local economy.

But when a concert venue is located away from major transit, it’s a logistical “nightmare” for those without access to a car.

And those with a car fight for limited parking. The board was to consider the request at its meeting yesterday.

Beyond costs, he said TTC workers use the three extra hours of downtime on Sundays before the subway opens at 9 a.m. for needed maintenance work.

Smile Theatre brings cheer to The Caregiver Show angeline mair amair@insidetoronto.com Great theatre can happen anywhere and bring big smiles to almost anyone - this is Smile Theatre’s mission, which brings musical performances to special audiences such as seniors who are isolated.

“Imagine taking a big musical and squishing it down into a really small compact space: that’s what we do,” said Tom Carson, general manager of Smile Theatre.

The company hires professional actors who star in 55-minute shows and travel to retirement residences, nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The shows are rehearsed and created locally then taken on the road throughout the Greater Toronto Area and sometimes further.

Smile Theatre will be performing at The Caregiver Show, which takes place May 30 at Centennial College’s Progress Campus in Scarborough.

The Caregiver Show is presented by Saint Elizabeth Health Care, which offers at-home services for family caregivers. The show is brought to Toronto residents by Metroland Media Toronto and Downsizing

Carson said the performances have a direct positive impact on seniors because the shows include music that is familiar with their history. “So that triggers memories for them and engages them on a level that’s different than just talking to them.”

As a theatre artist, he said he finds the work difficult because performing in a small activity room, cafeteria or a hallway may not offer the space a traditional theatre does. But the reward is greater. reach “The reason you are doing this is to reach those folks, who are there, who are just not going to see anything like this if you don’t go there.”

And the quality of actors is at par with who is performing on the big stages across Ontario, Carson said.

however, recently a woman told him after a show that her mom, who is 98 years old, hadn’t said a word in three weeks, was seen tapping her foot and smiling and humming along during the performance.

Tears filled the eyes of dozens of frontline settlement professionals at Rexdale Women’s Centre last week, as Kirsty Duncan relayed the story of Linda – a terminally ill woman who once sought refuge from her abusive partner in the Etobicoke North MP’s office.

Clearly ailing and in need of medical care, Linda showed up at Duncan’s constituency office out of the blue one day after fleeing her abusive common-law husband – but with no status here in Canada, could not afford a hospital stay.

With help from her staff and local social service agencies, Duncan got Linda a bed at Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter here in Etobicoke, and after her diagnosis with terminal cancer, successfully lobbied the Minister of Immigration to have her granted status so that she could live out the rest of her days as comfortably as possible here in her adopted home.

“Linda would tell you the last months of her life were her happiest – she loved being at Ernestine’s because she didn’t have to be afraid anymore, and she loved being with the other women and spending time with the children at the shelter,” said Duncan, noting that Linda, who passed a few months later, has since been memorialized at Ernestine’s with a yellow rose bush and a scholarship in her name.

“Linda changed all of us: my office will never be the same because we knew Linda; the police will never be the same because they knew Linda; Ernestine’s will never be the same.”

Friends and Families public education campaign aimed at raising awareness about violence against women – Duncan used the story of Linda to illustrate the importance of the “life-changing, and in many cases life-saving” work of those frontline settlement workers in attendance at the Thursday event.

“On those days when you think you cannot get anywhere – and there are those hard days in any women’s organization – know that you make a tremendous difference,” said Duncan, encouraging all to continue to fight against the “abhorrent human rights violation” that is violence against women and girls, and calling for a national action plan to end that violence.

“Thank you for always standing up and saying that violence against women and girls is not okay; for helping women and children escape violent situations; and for understanding that the time for action is now, so that no other woman like Linda ever faces violence at the hands of a man again.”

Funded by the Ontario Women’s Directorate, the Neighbours, Friends and Families project is a province-

wide campaign seeking to “improve the lives of women who are experiencing violence,” said Fatima Filippi, RWC’s executive director.

“Employing the bystander theory, the campaign’s principle theory is that neighbours, friends and family members all play a vital and an active role in helping to end violence against women, as well as preventing it from occurring,” she said of the project, which began last May. “Every woman experiences violence in a different way.

As such, in order to address and appreciate the diversity of Ontario’s communities, targeted and place-based responses independent of a one-size-fits-all approach are required.”

As of this past December, Filippi said RWC’s Neighbours, Friends and Families campaign has reached 156 participants through education sessions and e-workshops, and 388 different organizations across the province.

Last Thursday’s Opening Doors for Abused Women conference welcomed more than 75 frontline settlement professionals to the Rexdale Community Hub to participate in a full day of panel discussions and break-out sessions focused on the justice, mental health and legal systems.

Participants heard from guest speakers Deepa Mattoo of the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO), Silmi Abdullah of the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC), and Raelene Prieto of Women’s Health in Women’s Hands (WHIWH) about topics ranging from how to navigate the legal system, to how to access mental health services on behalf of their clients.

It is with great sadness, the family of Lillian Clark announces that she passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 25, 2015, in her 94th year.

She was the loving wife of the late (Robert) Bruce Clark, beloved mother to Rodney, Greg, Terry Hould, Caroline, David, Paul and Jan Davies-Cuksts.

Grandmother to Kelly, Gavin, Tamara, Jonathan, Mercedes, Porsche and Adrian, and Great Grandmother to Madison, Julian and Avery.

In 2004 Lillian was awarded the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award.

Lillian provided entertainment and nourishment to many senior citizens in her community. For 30 years, she has coordinated entertainment by and for senior citizens at retirement homes, seniors’ clubs and hospitals through an organization now known as Seniors Art Services. She served the organization as chair and coordinate talented musicians and performers for the enjoyment of the elderly. For 17 years, Mrs. Clark delivered and cooked meals through her local Meals on Wheels. She also devoted her time and energy to youth, helping to form the first Girl Guide group at St. Leo’s Parish in Mimico and volunteering at a local school to encourage students to participate in the arts.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 28, 2015 at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church, 2415 Rebecca Street, Oakville, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Lillian’s name may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or the Royal Canadian Legion - Bronte Branch 486.
