by Etobicoke Catholic high school students to depict the struggle for democracy and the power of global citizenship, recently exhibited at Metro Hall, the same week the Ontario government included the Ukrainian famine-genocide, the Holodomor, in the Ontario curriculum.

Nadia Guerrera, 37, found herself teaching about the Holodomor in spring 2015 to her Grade 12 Canadian and world issues students at Michael Power/St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School during classroom discussions about current affairs in Ukraine, the pro-democracy Euromaiden, the Putin-directed Russian invasion, and the history of Ukrainian-Russian relations.

“The main message of my course had been, ‘You matter and the world needs you, You’re the one per cent of the world with access to postsecondary education. Speak for people who have been silenced or who have difficulty being heard,’” she said Friday in her classroom.

The Holodomor is a genocidal famine engineered by the Soviet Union led by Joseph Stalin that killed an estimated 10 million Ukrainians in 1932-33.

A cascade of events aligned and Guerrera, a 15-year educator, experienced what some may call flow.

Guerrera urged her students to connect on social media with people in the news, and with journalists reporting on it.

She took her own advice.

Guerrera tweeted Andrea Chalupa, author of Orwell and the Refugees: The Untold Story of Animal Farm, to share that she was talking about Chalupa’s book in class. The two had met through Ukrainian Canadian Congress connections.

Animal Farm is George Orwell’s 1945 allegorical novel that uses farm animals to reflect on events of the Russian Revolution in 1917, and the Stalinist era of Soviet Russia, of which Orwell was a critic.

Grade 12 world issues teacher Nadia Guerrera is developing the next study unit for the national touring education bus.

“I told her that her book would help students understand the historical backdrop (of current affairs in Ukraine),” Guerrera recalled.

“I said, ‘You’re going to lecture my class through Skype. They’re going to create public art. We’ll have an art monument show about the fragility of democracy and safeguarding it around the world that will tie into the larger lesson on civic engagement and the role it plays in a healthy democracy.’”

Chalupa was thrilled. “She said, ‘I love it. It’s exactly what Orwell would do,’” Guerrera said of Chalupa’s reaction.

That first year Guerrera’s class produced Orwell Art, found at #OrwellArt on social media.

This year, her class joined four other Toronto Catholic classrooms – and five classrooms in Ukraine – who took Guerrera’s Orwell Art class simultaneously.

“We have the same rights as you have. We just don’t get to exercise

them,” Guerrera recalled one Ukrainian student saying. “It was such profound learning.”

Chalupa conducted a lecture over Skype with Toronto and Ukrainian students simultaneously.

Dr. Teresa Kramarz, director of Munk One, a program for first-year undergrads at the Munk School of Global Affairs in Toronto, also did a lecture for students.

“We’re architects of the possible, I teach my students,” Guerrera said. “If I need it to happen for the greater good, there is no reason why it can’t.”

by Guerrera’s students ran May 31 to June 4 at Metro Hall, the same week the Ontario government announced the Holodomor

would become part of the Ontario curriculum.

“That had a lot to do with Premier (Kathleen) Wynne and (Etobicoke C e n t r e M P P ) Yv a n B a k e r,” Guerrera said of the inclusion of the Holodomor in the province’s education curriculum.

Earlier this month, Wynne and Baker came to Michael Power/St. Joseph to meet Guerrera and the Orwell Art students, and to experience the 60-minute lesson in the Holodomor National Awareness Tour’s state-of-the-art, 40-footlong Holodomor Mobile Classroom bus.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation conceived the bus project to raise awareness of the Holodomor. It is supported by the Ontario, Manitoba, and federal governments.

Wynne surprised students by speaking on their morning announcements.

The premier said the Holodomor Mobile Classroom allows students to “reflect on the importance of multiculturalism, tolerance and diversity in Canada and around

the world.

“We have a responsibility to remember the horrible acts inflicted on the Ukrainian people, as we vow to never let atrocities like these happen again,” she said. “ Together, we must remain vigilant in our fight against hate and violence, as we build an Ontario free from discrimination.”

Baker worked with the Ontario government to secure $750,000 last year to support the creation of the Holodomor Mobile Classroom.

“Premier Wynne and the provincial contribution to the Holodomor Mobile Classroom has been instrumental in raising cultural awareness, spreading diversity and tolerance, and increasing access to information about the Holodomor,” Baker said in a statement.

Standing up to hate with pride and love

T

he city is on edge. Sunday’s mass murder at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida, has put Toronto on high alert.

That’s evident by Monday’s quick response by Toronto police to reports of a masked man walking around the University of Toronto’s St. George campus that the safety of the city and its citizens is of paramount importance.

Dozens of Emergency Task Force officers descended on the campus, cordoning off roads searching each building, weapons drawn, in hopes of preventing a tragedy.

Was there proof something as heinous as what happened in Orlando could our view happen here, in broad daylight?

No. But the potential threat and that was enough.

Toronto stands existed The attack that killed 49 in solidarity people out enjoying a night of dancing and drinks at the gay with all club reminds us – once again – that hate hangs over us and lives can be tragically altered, and ended, in an instant.

While Toronto police came up empty in their search for the ‘suspicious person’, reporting such suspicious activity to the authorities is something each and every one of us can do to ensure the safety of ourselves and our fellow Torontonians.

We don’t want to live in fear, but we need to be vigilant to continue to live in peace.

As Toronto continues celebrating its first-ever Pride Month, Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the wake of Sunday’s shootings.

“Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said.

“Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.”

This year’s Pride parade will be dedicated to the memory of the Pulse victims.

The parade, which kicks off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in the deadly attack.

Pride is working with Toronto police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout Pride Month.

The city is on edge, but it’s full of pride; for its citizens, its acceptance and its sense of freedom.

Need to go further in eradicating homophobia It was to be a nice little holiday in California: joining my wife at the end of a west-coast business junket to stay with dear old friends in Burbank, meet some of her Los Angeles-area family that hadn’t made it up for the wedding, enjoy some sun-drenched Southern California chill after not having seen each other for a couple of weeks.

A good holiday: the kind that celebrates loving relationships – reaffirming old ties, cementing new ones, along the mad freeway system that seems to be the spine of Los Angeles County.

On Sunday, early, we watched a bigger spine crack. In Orlando, Florida, more than 100 people were gunned down in a gay nightclub on Saturday night by Omar Mateen in what first seemed an act of terrible hate but now it seems was an act of deliberate terror.

And just down the

david nickle the city highway from us, in Santa Monica, police arrested an Indiana man with a truck full of guns and the stated intention of using them at Los Angeles’ Gay Pride parade. At this point, no word whether the planned attack was one of terror or hate.

Details. The suspect, who’d driven in from Indiana, meant to do harm to gay and lesbian and transsexual people. Armed like that, he likely meant to kill them.

That was very close – I’ll be honest, close enough that it rattled us.

But we didn’t have to be here in Burbank to feel that way. It’s close all around.

When we get back to Toronto later this week, that same threat – the low, cretinous bigotry that casts itself against the light of

unsanctified love (forgive me, today, that florid metaphor) – will be pervasive.

We’re in a city where a sizeable portion of the city has objected strongly enough to a curriculum promoting understanding of gay and lesbian sex that they would consider withdrawing their children from classes. Just a few years ago, we elected a mayor whose homophobia prevented him from attending Pride events and inspired him to fight when the Rainbow Flag flew over City Hall during the Sochi Olympics.

We’re getting better in some ways. At the top levels, we’re no longer burdened with hateful leadership: the new Mayor John Tory, the new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau don’t pander to that vile id.

Kathleen Wynne has spent a career, in part, defending against it.

We’re a good place.

But really, so is the United States. Same-sex

marriage is lawful. There is nothing wrong and very much right with a boy meeting a boy at the Pulse nightclub and exchanging a deep and hopeful kiss.

It ought not bring a death sentence.

U.S. President Barack Obama laid it out very clearly. The shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando were an act of hate. They were an act of terror.

Homophobia, that bromide that has kept many scowling bigots in dinner-table conversation for decades, has inspired the worst mass-shooting in American history.

It is something that can no longer be tolerated, even in those quiet and awful conversations. If we are to take Daesh seriously, we must also take homophobes seriously. Omar Mateen has shown us.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com In addition to serving up hearty helpings of pasta, salad and garlic bread at Dixon Grove Junior Middle School last week, Sgt. Brian Beadman also dished out plenty of high fives, selfies and smiles.

Over the last five months, Beadman and a team of handpicked officers from 23 Division’s Somali Liaison Unit (SLU) have become weekly lunchtime fixtures at the Etobicoke elementary school – quickly becoming many students’ most popular lunchmates every Wednesday.

“This is what community-based policing is all about. Every time we come out, the kids all have big smiles on their faces – and that says a lot right there,” a uniformed Beadman said while sitting amongst of group of Grade 7 students in Dixon Grove’s lunch room Wednesday, June 8.

“The whole goal and objective of this program is to help foster and promote an open dialogue with not only the kids, but their parents, too.

It’s about building trust in the community.”

And so far, it seems to be working.

“It’s actually really fun having them here,” said 13-year-old Nhi Tran. “It’s interesting getting to talk them because I didn’t really know any police officers before this.”

“It also just feels safe,” added Rida Shahid, 13. “The school feels safer because now with the police officers here with us, they can make sure things are safe.”

Food, friendship & looking to the future Somali Liaison Unit’s lunch program aims to foster open dialogue police amongst Dixon Grove students and their parents wasn’t always the case, reported Principal Neil Quimby – it’s a relationship that took some fostering.

“Just a few years ago, our kids, our community, saw the officers as a one-off. They’d say, ‘You’re not part of our community,’” said Quimby, who’s made police relationship building one of his priorities in his eight years as principal at Dixon Grove.

“Now our kids see the officers as just another teacher in the building...

some poor choices, our community knows that these officers understand our kids, that they know our kids, and that they are well aware of where our kids come from – they’re not people that are new to what Dixon Grove is all about.”

Parent volunteer Cecilia Ahumada also had nothing but good things to say about the SLU officers’ participation in Dixon Grove’s hot lunch program.

“I think the relations between (the officers) and the kids is good.

Before, the kids were sometimes afraid of them, but now it’s kind of a friendship kind of thing,” she said.

The officers’ participation in Dixon Grove’s lunch program is, however, just one of the ways the SLU is making inroads with youth in the Dixon Road area – which, along with Islington and Queen’s Plate, is one the communities that falls under the three-year-old unit’s mandate.

Beadman and his officers also run a Monday night basketball program for youth in the Dixon Grove gym, helped run a bike rodeo for the kids at the school just last week, launched the Big Blue Door games

room at 340 Dixon Rd. in January, and are set to initiate a new summer rugby program alongside the Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation (TIRF) in Dixon Park in July, among other initiatives.

“My officers love it because it’s all about positive, community-based policing. And with that comes cooperation from the community, too – because we have community volunteers here at Dixon Grove and we have community leaders that help run the programs on Dixon Road, too,” Beadman said.

“That’s part of community mobilization – we start the program, but we also help train community volunteers so that we can then give ownership of the programs to the community to sustain them. All the volunteers are excellent roles models from the community for these kids.”

One such volunteer-in-training, Beadman said, is 13-year-old Dixon Grove student Ibrahim Haji – a regular at the Big Blue Door games room.

“A big part of our mandate is to mentor youth, so I’m going to get him to start volunteering and, when the time comes, refer him to the YIPI (Youth In Policing Initiative) program,” Beadman said.

“A guy like that, he can go to university, he can do this or do that, he can do whatever he sets his mind to.”

And what Ibrahim has his mind set on now, he said, is following in Beadman’s footsteps.

“I want to be a police officer like him,” Ibrahim said with a smile.

“He’s the best.”

At Montmorency Falls Park, 84-metre-high waterfalls crash into the St. Lawrence from the Montmorency River. All candidates should be invited to debates: Ford >>>from page 1 especially when ( Ward 2) might potentially be a deciding vote on some big issues like the Scarborough subway, like landlord licensing, and like Expo 2025,” Strain said of the campaign run up to the July 25 byelection in a phone interview with The Guardian Monday.

“We need to know what Michael Ford has to say on these big issues, and I think a one-on-one debate would really give us the time and the focus to really get into depth on a lot of the big issues.”

When reached by phone Tuesday, Ford told The Guardian he is more than willing to engage Strain in a debate – but only one to which the other 10 registered candidates have been invited, too.

“I think, to be fair to everyone, (an all-candidates’ debate) is the appropriate thing to do,” he said. “I think everyone wants to make a difference in Etobicoke, everyone has their own ideas, and everyone should have a fair platform to express those ideas. I don’t think myself or any other individual running should have a leg up.”

One of the topics Strain said he would like to go toe-to-toe with Ford on is Thistletown Multi-Service Centre – the site at which he issued his debate challenge.

That particular community centre, he said, is currently at risk of being sold off by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), a predicament he noted has only been exacerbated by the fact that Ford, who was the TDSB trustee for Etobicoke North until recently, “abandoned” that post to run for city council.

“He resigned right as that decision was coming to the fore, so now Etobicoke (North) has nobody on the school board to champion Thistletown Multi-Service Centre,” Strain said.

“And a lot of local residents, like former councillor Suzan Hall, have been pointing that out – that he kind of walked away from his job in the middle of this big issue for the community.”

as Ward 1 councillor from 2000 to 2010 – was among more than 100 residents who gathered at a May 19 public consultation to discuss the potential sale of Thistletown.

“We are very concerned that our local school trustee, Michael Ford, has stepped down and, in stepping down, left us with no political voice at the TDSB, where this issue will be addressed,” she said at the time.

Ford, who resigned from the TDSB May 3 in order to pursue the Ward 2 seat on Toronto council, was also present at that May 19 community meeting and expressed misgivings that the Thistletown vote is still scheduled to proceed June 22.

“There is no trustee sitting at the boardroom table representing Etobicoke North – and that is the voice of the community,” Ford said at the meeting, urging his former TDSB colleagues to wait until after the July 25 byelection to make their decision about Thistletown.

This week, Ford reiterated those concerns, but assured residents he remains committed to ensuring Thistletown remains open.

“The timing of how the sequence of events have played out in the last few months definitely hasn’t been ideal. But I have been

watching the Thistletown file very closely for a number of months – and as a trustee, I made it very clear to staff at the board that I think it’s crucial that that community centre must stay a community centre,” he said Tuesday, noting he also planned to make a delegation on Thistletown’s behalf at the TDSB’s Planning and Priorities Committee meeting scheduled for yesterday.

“There’s no question that Etobicoke North faces some serious challenges, and community centres are very important to our ward and our community. I’m not too sure what other candidates are saying about my record on that issue, but I will fight right through and stand firmly in support of it.”

Added Ford’s campaign manager Chris Rougier: “If Mr. Strain would like to discuss (Thistletown) with Michael at an all-candidates’ debate, then we’re eager to attend one – we’re just waiting for an organization to send us an invite.”

In addition to Ford and Strain, the other registered candidates in the Ward 2 byelection are Stacey Agard, Chloe-Marie Brown, Jeff Canning, Kevin Clarke, Chai Kalevar, Annette Lubinski, Christopher Noor, Glen Smith, Ken Street and Jimmy Talpa.

In the face of Sunday’s mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Pride Toronto is stepping forward and honouring the 49 people who lost their lives to a rampaging gunman.

Pride is dedicating this year’s Pride Parade to the victims of the shooting after 29-year-old Omar Mateen opened fire in Pulse in the early hours on Sunday morning.

“We are shocked and saddened by this horrible act,”

said Aaron GlynWilliams, cochair of Pride Toronto’s Board of Directors, in a statement.

“By dedicating the pinnacle of Toronto’s Pride Month celebration to our brothers and sisters in Orlando, we are telling the world that we will not be silenced or intimidated.

We will not respond to hate with hate. We will mourn and hold these beautiful family members in our hearts, as we continue to fight violence and discrimination against our community.”

The parade, which will kick off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 3,

will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in Mateen’s deadly attack.

In the meantime, Pride is working with Toronto Police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout Pride Month.

Pride has been wary of adding a uniformed presence to the festivities given that many in the LGBTQ community have had strained relationships with the police and have felt marginalized by law enforcement.

Despite any such concerns, Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the face of hatred following Sunday’s shootings.

“Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said. “Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.”

The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in group situations, especially in restaurants. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that determine when you hear things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory centre of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet.

The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies.

And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

Robert H. Tier was known for his prized celery at a time when the vegetable was considered high class denise harris history corner In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the humble celery plant was considered a status food that only the wealthy could afford.

Tall, cut-glass “celery vases” were used to serve company an entire head of the vegetable vertically, with the leaves still attached.

Celery began to lose its aura of prestige by the 1920s when cheaper varieties became available.

This change was reflected in a new canoe-like shape for celery servers: long, narrow, low and made of less expensive pressed glass.

Robert H. Tier was a market gardener in Islington in exactly the right time period to capitalize on celery’s social prominence.

He arrived in Canada from Sussex, England, in 1861. In 1863 he married Sarah Ide at St. George’s on-the-Hill Anglican Church.

Behind the house, the land dropped down into the Mimico Creek valley where the dark soil was rich in nutrients and perfect for market gardening.

Robert also bought a former Temperance Hall sitting empty west of Burnhamthorpe Road and moved it to the west side of his house.

He used the main floor to sell his vegetables, and the second floor was available for use by community groups such as the Boy Scouts and Red Cross.

Tier grew many different types of vegetables, but his specialty was celery.

He would painstakingly cover each stalk with white paper, resulting in plants that produced less chlorophyll and had a sweeter taste.

Every summer, retailers would drive for miles to buy Tier’s highquality product.

In 1910, he was honoured when the Ontario Celery Growers Association held its annual meeting on his property.

Robert and Sarah Tier had six children: two boys and four girls.

Sarah Tier died in 1907 and Robert Sr. in 1913.

They are buried in St. George’s on-the-Hill Anglican Cemetery.

Their sons, Thomas and Robert Jr., married two sisters from Islington: Edith and Eva Johnston, respectively.

Thomas worked as a sales agent for the Massey Farm Implement Company.

He was an Etobicoke councillor from 1918 to 1924, and reeve from 1925 to 1926. Robert Jr. remained on the home farm and was a market gardener like his father.

The next time you’re munching on a celery stick, take a few minutes to remember Robert Tier and his family, and the high-class role this humble vegetable once played in our society.

The plan to create a network of public space right under a portion of the Gardiner Expressway was made possible thanks to a $25-million private donation that will go toward transforming reclaimed derelict space into what’s been promised as new gateway for the city, linking

some 70,000 people living in and around Fort York.

Lead designer Ken Greenberg said the project, to be completed by Waterfront Toronto, could receive monetary boosts thanks to federal grants and additional philanthropic sources for future phases of the plan.

“It’s too early to identify (funding sources) or specific projects, but there are indications other funding might be coming forward for

the second and third phase of the project,” said Greenberg following a public meeting late last month, for the Under Gardiner plan at the Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre on Queen’s Quay.

Additional funding could go toward expanding a planned skating trail to one kilometre or creating a hub for innovation in partnership with Exhibition Place on the east side of Strachan Avenue. It could also fund a pedestrian and cycling

bridge to span Spadina Avenue.

At the meeting, an update was also presented on design options under consideration for a pedestrian and cycling bridge crossing Fort York.

The bridge is undergoing an environmental assessment to determine the final look for the structure that would either be suspended from the Gardiner or placed at-grade at Fort York Boulevard, which is located with the heart of the plan.

Greenberg said the Under Gardiner project would allow for a different appreciation for the oftmaligned expressway.

“Something that was designed entirely for the movement of cars in middle of 20th century now becomes a something you look at with new eyes,” he said.

Additional uniformed officers appeared at eight troublesome city intersections this week, part of an initiative announced by Mayor John Tory earlier this month.

And while Tory insists road users equally play a role enabling traffic congestion and unsafe conditions, many Toronto police officers don’t agree. They point to those violators on foot for example with the temerity to cross even while the countdown timer is running, which interferes with cars’ ability to turn.

Pedestrian advocates counter that high speeds and roads designed purely for the benefit of one mode of transportation over all others are the main culprits for congestion.

City staff is proposing building a set of contra-flow lanes that allow cyclists to travel in both directions on a one-way street. You’ll often see them in quieter, residential areas as a way to minimize car traffic.

Now there’s a plan to build a set of connected contra-flow lanes on Woodbine, between O’Connor Drive and Queen Street East, as well as on stretches of Corley and Norway avenues. Two meetings are

PortsToronto bringing back Sail-in Cinema for the summer PortsToronto will bring back its floating cinema this summer.

Sail-in Cinema allows viewers at Sugar Beach to take in a flick projected from both sides of a floating barge anchored in Lake Ontario. This year’s program will be made up of films adapted from books. Three options are planned, to be selected via an online voting campaign scheduled to launch in mid-June.

The three-day event according to

PortsToronto has attracted 11,000 people and 100 boats over the course of its six years of existence.

Audiences can watch on an inflatable two-sided screen that sits on a four-story frame and is considered one of the largest outdoor screens in North America.

The inflatable frame itself sits on a 90-foot long barge.

Centre marks second anniversary The Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women’s Empowerment will celebrate its second anniversary with a community event this Saturday.

The anniversary celebration, which will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at 101 Portland St. (near Royal York Road and Evans Avenue), is open to the community and will feature a free barbecue, family fun and games, and entertainment.

June 2014 opening First opened in June 2014, the centre is named after trailblazing former EtobicokeLakeshore MP Jean Augustine, who became the first ever African-Canadian woman elected to Parliament when she won the riding in 1993 and served until 2005.

Since opening two years ago, the community-based Jean Augustine Centre has been empowering young women by offering free programs to girls between the ages of seven and 17 years.

Storefront Humber will continue to operate in a cityowned, two-storey red brick building on the Etobicoke waterfront.

Etobicoke York Community Council voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt an Official Plan amendment to extend the non-profit organization’s 21-year lease, required since the 2445 Lake Shore Blvd. W. property is designated Parks and Open Space.

The non-profit organization provides myriad programs to more than 3,000 south Etobicoke seniors, including personal care, bathing, home help, transportation, lawn cutting and snow shoveling.

Storefront Humber had requested a five-year lease extension.

Lynda Ryder, Storefront Humber’s chair, told councillors the agency had invested $1 million in capital improvements to the building, citing a new furnace, creation of a seniors’ cooling centre, foundation and roof repairs, as well as additions.

Ryder reported Storefront Humber officials met in recent weeks with some residents groups with objections to a lease extension, who cited concerns over inadequate park parking and requested public access to rent the lakefront building at night and on weekends.

“We asked the community to talk with us,” Ryder said.

“The (Mimico-by-the-Lake) BIA people, Birds and Beans, residents’ groups. We’re trying to take all their concerns into consideration and create a big package to address them.”

around Amos Waites Park, including Storefront Humber, an area designated Mimico’s cultural and recreational hub in the Mimico Secondary Plan.

“If you approve (this) item without also requiring that the area undergo a proper, open and transparent community consultation to determine how best to use our waterfront assets for all community members, you will be perpetuating, entrenching and condoning the institutional deafness we have been experiencing on this issue,” Pritchard wrote in a June 13 email to community council.

Tim Dobson, Lakeshore Planning Council chair, said in a June 13 letter that Mimico residents have long wanted public access to the Storefront Humber building.

“The proposal to redesignate the property from Parkland to SASP (Site and Area Specific Policy) 265 specifically, and needlessly in law, frustrates residents’ objectives that, in the shorter and long term, this building and property at 2445 Lake Shore Blvd. W. will be open to the public/area residents to serve as a community centre or some similar purpose.”

Parking concerns, and whether residents groups could rent space in Storefront Humber’s building, consumed the majority of the two-hour meeting.

That is, until Neil Cresswell, director of community planning with Etobicoke York District, advised councillors

the singular issue before them was “to allow” Storefront Humber’s lease to extend beyond 21 years.

“The lease itself is not b e f o re Et o b i c o k e Yo r k C o m m u n i t y C o u n c i l ,” Cresswell told councillors.

“There has been a lot of conversations about the lease itself. The issue before you is to allow the lease to extend beyond 21 years. The lease agreement, and the parties involved, is not before you.”

Ward 11 ( York SouthWeston) Councillor Frances Nunziata made a sharp remark about the debate, taking aim at Code’s parking presentation.

“Storefront Humber has been there 20 years,” Nunziata said. “The use has been there for 20 years. The issue today is to allow the lease. To use parking as a way not to support the lease is inappropriate.”

Grimes said while the Mimico 20/20 visioning study spoke of a cultural hub at Amos Waites Park, adjacent to Storefront Humber, that is a future – not present – consideration.

“Through Mimico 20/20, we talked about maybe having a cultural hub. But that is in the future. We have no place else to put Storefront Humber,” Grimes said. “...

In the city’s Official Plan, we cannot sell parkland.

I’d never sell any parkland.

City council will make a final decision on the matter at its July 12 meeting.

Controversy erupts over decision to funnel funds away from Sherway trail City planner Neil Cresswell terms decision ‘troubling’ TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Nearly $400,000 in community benefit funds intended to restore the Sherway Etobicoke Creek Trail could now be spent on other capital park projects in Ward 5.

Etobicoke York Community Council voted Tuesday, contrary to the opinion of the city’s Etobicoke York director of community planning, to reallocate the $358,000 to other parks in the south Etobicoke ward north of the QEW. “This section of Ward 5 is kilometres away from other parks,” said EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Justin Di Ciano, who represents the ward. “Section 37 (community benefits) money is scattered everywhere (in the ward). There are hundreds of thousands of dollars left over, and we don’t have access to it for parks residents want to see improved.”

Neil Cresswell, director of community planning with Etobicoke York District, called the motion councillors approved “troubling.”

The city’s Official Plan states Section 37 funds may be spent “as long as (the project) bears geographic relationship to the development that generated the funds,” Cresswell said, quoting the city’s Official Plan.

“It has to have geographic proximity to the development application,” Cresswell said. “By moving funds generally in this manner to use the money for parkland throughout Ward 5, it goes against the city’s Official Plan.”

The Sherway condominiums’ development at Sherway Gardens generated the Section 37 funds slated to be spent on Etobicoke Creek trail improvements at Sherway.

The project would build a new 0.7-kilometre section of trail between Sherway Drive and a connection immediately south of the QEW with habitat features and an educational kiosk, and create a trail gateway to connect Etobicoke to

Mississauga, a Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) brochure states.

Former Ward 5 councillor Peter Milczyn, Di Ciano’s predecessor, had written community council colleagues in 2012 calling for a Section 37 review to “provide increased flexibility” on Ward 5 funds for parks, streetscape, recreation, community facilities and public art.

“New, and more appropriate, community needs arise over time and it is critical that the funds received under these agreements are put to the best use for the community and neighbourhoods which they were intended to benefit,” Milczyn wrote, not referring specifically to the Sherway Etobicoke Creek Trail or any other project.

Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette said she couldn’t support Di Ciano’s motion: “I hesitate reallocating that money when the project hasn’t been completed.”

Ward 11 ( York SouthWeston) Councillor Frances Nunziata disagreed.

“Councillors should be able to allocate Section 37 money out of one area to another area of the ward that needs the funds,” she said.

Resident Irene Jones, former Ward 6 (Etobicoke-Lakeshore) Councillor, implored councillors to maintain the $358,000 in an account earmarked for the Etobicoke Creek Sherway Trail.

Jones said plans for the trail, 20 years in the making, had been “thwarted” because the Ministry of Transportation did an Environmental Assessment on its planned project to widen the QEW near the creek and because of permits necessary to do the trail work.

A recent Di Ciano newsletter reported the trail could be further delayed until 2021, Jones said.

“If it gets deferred to 2021, my suspicion is it will never happen,” Jones said of the long-planned Sherway Trail.

“The cost of the trail will grow

significantly. We’ll have to do the consultation process all over again. I’d like to be alive when this gets completed. It just needs to be restored and made safe for pedestrians and cyclists. Help!”

Jones’ pleas fell largely on deaf ears.

York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, who sits on the TRCA board, wanted to know TRCA’s financial contribution to the Sherway Trail. The answer wasn’t immediately available.

Councillors approved Mammoliti’s motion to have Cresswell consult with TRCA’s chief administrative officer to provide an update on the Sherway Etobicoke Creek Trail and the Mimico Creek Trail System and to report back to community council at its Sept.

7 meeting.

Ward 12 ( York SouthWeston) Councillor Frank Di Giorgio disagreed.

Di Giorgio argued moving community benefits money elsewhere in a ward requires an Official Plan amendment “but we don’t do it.” He further suggested doing so should require holding community consultation meetings.

“It’s like speaking to a wall,” Di Giorgio said when Di Ciano was speaking with his executive assistant during his remarks.

“That’s why they don’t know anything about Section 37.”

Etobicoke Centre Councillor Stephen Holyday said he is hopeful the trail gets built, calling it a “valuable addition to the cycling network.”

Holyday supported Di Ciano’s motion to reallocate the community benefits money elsewhere in his ward. But he cautioned constituents may call Di Ciano to account for it.

“I think the community should hold Councillor Di Ciano to account for the money if he opts to move the money out. Residents should speak up, and perhaps they will at the next election,” Holyday said.

Council will make a decision on the matter July 12.

New townhouse development could put transit expansion at risk Metrolinx, Toronto’s chief planner speak out against new project DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council has approved a townhouse development in Mimico that city planning staff and Metrolinx say could jeopardize Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack and GO Transit Regional Rail expansion.

Councillors voted to approve a plan to build residential homes right next to the Willowbrook Yard, a GO Transit maintenance facility that according to letters from the provincial transit agency Metrolinx is essential for the heavy rail expansion plans that would include both Regional Express Rail and the SmartTrack plan.

That’s because the lands on the south side of Judson Road, which are currently occupied by a cement plant reviled by neighbouring homes in southern Etobicoke, act as a buffer between those homes and the yard.

“There is going to be overnight noise because of testing of braking systems,” said Toronto’s chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat. “This includes the revving of engines, bells,

brakes. Unfortunately it is a noisy activity and the extent to which we keep residential homes away from it will allow these yards to function. It serves as a buffer today and needs to serve as a buffer in the future.”

In a letter to council, Metrolinx CEO Greg Percy made it clear that the Mimico-Judson Secondary Plan in its staff-recommended form supported the province’s proposed growth plan for the Greater Golden

Horseshoe. Residential development is at odds, and would “limit future expansion.”

The change in the plan came originally at the city’s Planning and Growth Management Committee, when the committee recommended against the advice of city staff that townhouses be developed on the land.

At the June council meeting, local councillor Mark Grimes urged council to keep the townhouses there.

The cement-mixing facility currently on the lands has created a “nightmare” for the community abutting them, and because the facility exists as-of-right, the city is powerless to remove it.

“I have a major nightmare across from the residents,” he said. “The neighbours are livid, to put it mildly.”

Grimes argued that the townhouses would be far enough away from the yard, and protected by a noise-abatement wall, to be spared the noise impacts that Metrolinx and city staff maintain would make the units unlivable.

Council finally approved the development, with a vote of 21-15.

Mayor Tory was among those who voted in favour.

Green-thumbed garden lovers in Etobicoke are invited to participate in the Long Branch by the Lake Garden Tour in support of LAMP Community Health Centre.

The brainchild of Long Branch neighbours Sheila Gregory and Nadia Stelmach, the tours will take place rain or shine on Saturday, June 18 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., bringing together 14 private gardens into full public view.

“After visiting many gardens in Ontario, Quebec and even down in the U.S. in recent years, I realized our community boasts fabulous gardens that rival anything I’ve seen,” Gregory said in a statement.

“Nadia and I started talking with local gardeners and learned there was plenty of interest in starting a garden tour in our community. This is a grassroots, neighbourly effort connecting Long Branch gardeners.”

Tickets are $10, and are required to enter each participating garden. Each ticket consists of a 20-page booklet including a map of the locations of the 14 participating gardens, short garden descriptions, and current photos of Long Branch, as well as archival photos of the area courtesy of Toronto Public Library.

All proceeds from ticket sales will go to support LAMP Community Health Centre, a multi-service, communitybased charitable organization that provides health programs and services in south Etobicoke.

Market set to kick off Tuesday Stonegate Farmers’ Market kicks off its 11th season this month.

Located in the Queensway/ Park Lawn neighbourhood, the Stonegate Farmers’ Market will set up shop in the parking lot at Christ Church St. James’ Anglican Church, 194 Park Lawn Rd. (just north of The Queensway), every Tuesday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. starting June 21 and running until Oct. 4.

It’s Stonegate market’s sense of community that is the “special ingredient” that sets it apart – especially since Stonegate Plaza was demolished to make way for redevelopment, said Bev Leaver, executive director of Stonegate Community Health Centre.

In addition to those features, Stonegate has also piloted and runs the successful Market Money Program, which now serves a model for markets across the city.

Funded through donations, last year’s Market Money Program saw nearly $6,000 in Market Money given out to ‘food insecure’ community members to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables they otherwise couldn’t afford.
