Ice by Night ‘Cosmic Lure’

‘Cosmic Lure’ attempts to capture a nighttime ski experience on a frozen expanse of ice on Georgian Bay. The formation was a beautiful, supernatural phenomenon that suggested more than an earthbound experience according to artist Nancy Newton. She’s lived in Etobicoke for most of her life and has been painting since she was seven years old. Newton became a teacher, the Head of Visual Arts at the former Vincent Massey Collegiate and was the Assistant Head of Art of Kipling Collegiate. For the last 10 years, Newton has been on the board of Arts Etobicoke and sits on the executive committee of Exploring Creativity in Depth, which offers arts enrichment programs at Neilson Park Creative Centre for elementary school children in Etobicoke. Nativity scene comes to life Those looking to discover that miraculous night when Jesus was born need not look any further than Richview Baptist Church, which will once again transform into the little town of Bethlehem this week for the A Night in Bethlehem event.

The annual living nativity boasts a congregational cast of angels, shepherds, Roman guards and census takers, and

Mary and Joseph to recreate the first Christmas.

And, of course, joining them once again in the Nativity will be live stable animals, including goats, llamas, donkeys and sheep.

The popular drop-in event, which has been a huge success in past years, will also feature an interactive craft marketplace for the kids and coffee house for the adults.

A Night in Bethlehem takes place on Friday, Dec. 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Richview Baptist Church, 1548 Kipling Ave. (at Kipling and Eglinton avenues).

STUDENTS GET REVENGE WHIPPED UP: Bloorlea Middle School students have been busy collecting canned goods and fundraising for the Daily Bread Food Bank with a variety of activities including a pie-in-the-face fundraiser on Wednesday. 2014 must usher in transit decisions

L

et 2014 be the year of definition for Toronto’s transit future.

Circular discussion about transit options doesn’t ease gridlock. Insecure funding doesn’t build transit. Poor transportation doesn’t help us realize economic stability, let alone economic potential.

And every day without a bona fide master plan agreed to by funders, builders and users is another day to fall behind an eager and competitive global marketplace. For the decisions made or not made today affect us for years to come – and hurt us as traffic gets increasingly problematic.

You can’t build what you can’t fund. And nobody seems willing to accept responsibility for funding regional transportation plans. Frankly, no government has the kind of money sitting around to do so anyway.

Back in May, Metrolinx, the provincial agency planning and building transit improvements in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton our view Area (GTHA), estimated a $34 billion cost for priority projects.

Let’s not dither Funding methods suggested included a gas tax hike; increasing on a long-term the HST in the GTHA by one per cent; hiking development charges transit plan to 15 per cent; and requiring commercial parking lot operators to pay a fee of 25 cents per space.

Ann Golden, who chaired a provincial task force examining Metrolinx’s funding suggestions, has recommended to Premier Kathleen Wynne to either fund transit with a gas tax hike or a combination of a raised gas tax and HST hike.

The thought of any tax hike is tough for many drivers – and politicians – to accept.

Politicians who say they won’t support this tax, however, must offer their own credible solution for funding.

We’ll repeat our great wish: Let’s see an ongoing and public meeting of representatives from all levels of government to meet and hash out a complete transit system and a complementary funding formula every level of government can live with.

For this isn’t simply a Toronto problem.

Canada does not succeed with a Golden Horseshoe weakened by transit woes.

Ontario does not succeed when the manufacturing and population hub is staggered by lengthy commute and transport times.

And Toronto does not reach full potential on a local or world stage if it develops a reputation as municipally dithering and indecisive in future planning.

To the editor: I am disturbed by what some politicians seem to be doing in this city.

They cut taxes and services that generally help “the little guy” and then use their wealth to give handouts to a select few.

They make questionable decisions that are based on what voters want to hear, ignoring evidence and the likelihood of success. They value loyalty over competence and expertise in their staff and advisers.

I can see that, if it succeeds, this behaviour will gain votes and increase the power of these politicians.

But where does it leave the rest of us and our city?

TTC should put coin counters on buses

Take the time to indulge in old-fashioned letter writing, says reader To the editor: My three-year-old daughter Caitlin was determined that Santa was going to be writing to her this year, but she finally conceded and marched off to this mailbox at the corner.

Her Christmas wishes for herself and her baby brother were thoughtfully dictated to me so I could jot them down on her behalf.

The envelope was sealed and adequately decorated with the shiniest stickers she owns, then off to the mailbox.

This photo was taken a week before Canada Post announced that door-to-door mail delivery will be phased out. It is moments like this that will become a distant memory for the upcoming generation, and this photo may well become a family heirloom in the years ahead.

To the editor: The TTC always seems to be burdening taxpayers because of their mismanagement of the system. The New York Transit buses are equipped with coin counters for exact fare passengers. This is not so in TTC buses and streetcars.

I happened to travel on TTC buses to and from a hospital where my sister was a

patient. I used the system because of the high cost of parking at the hospital.

One day while travelling on a bus, I stood at the front near the driver throughout my journey.

I did so because I was chatting with the driver. I observed, on several occasions, persons entering the bus who did not put the exact change in the fare box.

There was no way the driver could have known how much money went in the box because it is not equipped with a counter.

I questioned the driver about passengers shortchanging the system and he said that he wouldn’t be bothered because he would be behind schedule if he had to check how much money was going into the box.

He further stated that it was the TTC’s problem and they should put coin counters in the buses. He also said that the TTC knew about it and yet they do nothing.

Unless something is being done to remedy this situation by the top brass who think they know too much, taxpayers will continue to pay for this.

At first-ever Youth Innovators Conference this month, more than 200 high school students from across the city were inspired to think bigger, given the skills to act bigger, and connected with a community of people who creates bigger – and it’s all thanks to 17-year-old Bishop Allen Academy student William Lawrence and his team.

by Lawrence, the Youth Innovators were created to “unlock the innovative potential of high school students.”

“We believe that, through entrepreneurship, there is a lot of opportunities for students to expose themselves to interesting things and get a lot of experience in their own fields and whatever it is they’re interested in,” said the Grade 12 student, who serves as a student trustee on the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

“So Youth Innovators was created not only to inspire people to think bigger, but also to give them some resources and skills to pursue their dreams and to connect them with a network of people who share some of the same ideas.”

Thinking big helped Lawrence and the Youth Innovators team – consisting of fellow Bishop Allen students Victoria Wojciechowska, Anastasia Martynovitch, Sara Karma, Joseph Fantauzzi, and Gonzalo Falcon, alongside Michael Power/St. Joseph’s Kanak Nagee, and Lorina Hoxha from Etobicoke School of the Arts – make their inaugural conference a huge success.

more than 200 local high school students to their very first event, but they also secured $13,000 in sponsorships and in-kind donations from the likes of the DECA Ontario, Shad Valley, HootSuite, the Rotary Club of Etobicoke and MaRS Discovery District, which served as the conference venue. ‘huge numbers’ “It was amazing. We were surprised by the huge numbers we were able to get – especially since it was our very first event, other than a few small meetings at city hall,” Lawrence said. “This event was really big not just because of the amount of people, but the sponsors we were able to get and the quality of presenters we were able to draw.”

Those presenters included keynote speaker John Baker, CEO of educational technology company Desire to Learn, and workshop leaders including Two-Bite Brownie founder Mike Tevlin, former Commodore Computers CEO Robert H. Lane, and successful businesswoman Claudia Harvey, who beat the odds by

striking a deal in the Dragon’s Den for her Dig It gardening gloves.

“It was great to see people coming up to our team afterwards and saying ‘you guys really inspired me. I’m so excited, I really want to create something now.’ That made my day,” Lawrence said of the inspiration gleaned by Youth Innovators conference attendees.

“The most exciting part for me was seeing people have that ‘aha moment’. I think the youth participants connected with a lot of our presenters because they were all entrepreneurs when they were younger. So everyone was just, like, ‘woah! I could really do this if I put my mind to it and I apply myself like these people have.’ So that was the best part for me, and I learned that a lot of people aren’t actually aware of what they’re capable of doing.”

For Lawrence, pulling off such a successful Youth Innovators conference taught him that he’s capable of building off that success and organizing even more events in the future.

“That was just the first of many,” he said, noting that he hopes future Youth Innovators events will include more hands-on endeavors.

“The main philosophy behind Youth Innovators and what makes us different is that we don’t just want to inspire – we want to go beyond that and carry on with our youth innovators to the actualization of their ideas.”

Etobicoke-Centre Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby said she was equally content with the negotiated settlement: “I think what will come out of all of this is, it will be a better development for both FCR and for Humber Valley,” she said, likening her community’s long-standing battle against FCR’s plans for Humbertown to that of a David vs. Goliath showdown.

“I think finally what we have here is a really substantial improvement from what was originally proposed and something all sides will be happy with.”

By contrast, local reaction to FCR’s original proposal for the Humbertown site – which was submitted to the city last January and included plans for five residential towers ranging in height from 11 to 21 storeys – was swift, with many from the affluent village-within-a-city calling out the plan as “too big, too dense and too tall” for their predominantly lowrise community.

Even as FCR unveiled an ultimately scaled-back development proposal for the 270 The Kingsway plaza in reaction to neighbourhood concerns – ultimately decreasing

the scope of its plans to just three residential towers of eight, 10 and 12 storeys in height – community calls of dissent continued.

In response, the HVVRA invested “tens of thousands of dollars” in hiring Weiss Architecture and Urbanism to come up with an alternative design for Humbertown Plaza based on feedback from members of the residents’ association.

The result – an alternate design based on five principles: the maintaining of Humber Valley Village’s “majestic” tree canopy; maintaining the community’s lowrise nature; development compatible with the neighbourhood’s scale and texture; visual and physical connectivity; and the creation of a neighbourhood square for community gatherings.

When, in the eyes of local residents, FCR’s proposal came up short of those principles time and time again, the community came out in force to oppose the developer’s application – first at a special Etobicoke York Community Council session held in May at a 3,200-seat venue at Church on the Queensway, then again in June at Toronto City Council.

On both occasions, city councillors sided with the residents and refused FCR’s application – a decision the developer then appealed to the OMB. It was over five days of mediation at the OMB in October that the HVVRA, alongside representatives from Residents Against Irresponsible Development (RAID) and City of Toronto staff, were able to negotiate a settlement with FCR that Christensen said meets all five of the residents’ association’s design principles, and stave off what likely would have been a very lengthy and costly OMB hearing.

At the HVVRA meeting earlier this month, more than 200 residents threw their unanimous support behind the OMB-mediated proposal for Humbertown, in which property owners First Capital Realty (FCR) agreed to amend their redevelopment plans for the 50s-era strip mall to include: n the addition of terraced architecture to the proposed residential towers and a reduction of the angular plane of their buildings generally to 30 degrees; n an increase in setbacks between the buildings and roadways to three metres, allowing for a “legacy tree canopy” to grow along Royal York, Lambeth, and Ashley roads; n an increase in green spaces throughout the site; n the creation of an enhanced neighbourhood square to allow for public gatherings; n the establishment of a 160-unit seniors’ residence, which will facilitate senior residents remaining in the Humber Valley Village neighbourhood; n restrictions on retail space to ensure no “big box” stores are permitted in Humbertown Plaza; n and the contribution of $80,000 to HVVRA to retain professional design consultants and landscape architects for the site plan approval process.

Affluent doctor gives up wealth and dedicates life to helping the poor

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Back in the ‘70s, Etobicoke’s Dr. Andrew Simone seemingly had it all – a Harvard education, a thriving dermatology practice, a beautiful home in well-to-do The Kingsway, a couple of fancy cars in the driveway, and “more money than I knew what to do with.”

But something was always missing.

“When we became rich, we were a little disillusioned,” Simone said. “It wasn’t as good as we thought it was going to be.”

Despite all his success, Simone said he and his wife Joan quickly came to realize that the trappings of wealth were mere distractions from their true purpose in life. They had a higher calling: to dedicate their lives to serving the poor.

And so the now-75-yearold and his wife sold their cars and their televisions, gave up their vacations, and gave away their life savings. The only thing they kept, Simone said, was their grand home on King George’s Road – for the sake of their brood of 13 children, plus the dozens of foster kids they’ve taken in over the years.

“When we changed our lives, everything got better. All the money we earn now, we give to charity – except what we need for the basic essentials,” he said, noting that his life of philanthropy is deeply rooted in his Catholic faith.

“I’m not a humanitarian, I’m a Christian. I don’t ram my faith down anyone’s throat, I simply live it by helping everyone who needs help.”

These days, when Simone isn’t busy running his bustling dermatology walk-in clinic out of the back of his family home – most of the proceeds from which he donates to the poor – he’s at the Mississauga warehouse of Canadian Food for Children (CFFC), the charity he, wife Joan and friend Shari Fazekas founded at the urging of Mother Teresa.

wrote. “To send money is not good, as there is no food to buy – but in your country, there is plenty.”

In the years since, the Simones met with Mother Teresa on three separate occasions and exchanged dozens of letters, but it was that first request, Simone said, that formed the basis for what would in 1986 become CFFC – a now very active charity that sends nearly 340 shipping containers full of donated food, candles, clothing, shoes, and toys to children in need around the world each year.

In just the first seven months of this year, CFFC shipped nearly 5.66 million pounds of food to 17 different

developing nations around the world.

On a recent trip to CFFC’s warehouse, The Guardian looked on as Simone, donning his signature wooden crucifix around his neck, gleefully supervised students from Mississauga’s St. Paul and Brampton’s Cardinal Ambrozic Catholic secondary schools as they loaded a shipping container with sacks of beans and powdered milk, crates of cookies, cereals and canned fruit, as well as carefully wrapped, Christmasthemed shoe boxes full of toys and trinkets destined for the poor children of Jamaica.

For St. Paul’s chaplain Brian Finamore, who has been vol-

unteering at CFFC for the last 23 years, the opportunity to expose his students to the good work Simone is doing at CFFC is priceless.

“The most important lesson they learn here is that there’s more than enough food for everyone – we just need to share,” he said.

“What I find in young people is, the greatest sin they see in an adult is being a hypocrite, because then the message is lost. But if you really live your message, like Dr. Simone does, the kids sop it up like sponges because they’re starving for it.”

And the students, in turn, inspire Simone to carry on in his mission to serve the poor with the energy of a man much younger than himself.

Neither his age, nor a recent cancer diagnosis, has slowed him down one bit.

“I was in Zambia this summer, El Salvador three weeks ago, and I’m heading to Peru in February,” he said with a smile. “I like to go and meet the missionaries myself to make sure I’m satisfied that the food will get to the poor.”

When asked when he’ll retire, Simone doesn’t hesitate in his response: “When I can’t stand anymore.

“How can I retire when everything I do, everything I earn is helping the poor? It’s what I do, it’s who I am,” he added. “We have to remember the poor – that’s the bottom line.”

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Running a competitive small business can be a tricky. But for the past 15 years, Toronto business owners have been operating with a handicap.

Property taxes funding provincial education are higher in Toronto and while relief has been promised, it’s not coming quickly enough.

“The difference for Toronto could amount to thousands of dollars,” said Lionel Miskin, vice-president of the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas, which represents 74 BIAs across the city.

The reasons behind that disadvantage stretches back to former premier Mike Harris and continuing today.

Timeline • In 1998, then finance minister Ernie Eves promised to fix the Business Education

Tax (BET) imposed when the PC government took over the funding of education from local boards of education.

When boards levied property taxes for schools, they taxed according to local needs and that money went into local schools. But with the Ministry of Education allocating funding according to a specific formula, the money was spread across the province according to regional needs. The province equalized residential property tax rates for education. Because of that shift, Toronto and other large municipalities took on a larger portion of the property tax burden.

Eves committed to cutting business taxes so it eventually would equalize at 1.6 per cent. The initial target date was 2007. By the time they left office in 2003, the Conservatives were cutting the tax by $400 million a year.

• In 2003, the Liberals froze

the reductions until the 2007 budget, when it announced it would resume the cuts, targeting complete reduction of the rates by 2014.

• In the 2012 budget, the Liberals announced another freeze in the phase-out until 2017 to ’18, when the provincial budget is anticipated to be balanced For TABIA, that’s too late.

A July report commissioned

by TABIA and the Ontario Business Improvement Area Associations indicated the freeze would Toronto where business taxes remain higher than normal, and would not significantly speed up the rate at which the deficit is eliminated.

Officials at the Ontario Ministry of Finance would not comment on the report but pointed to the 2012 provincial budget documents, which indicate that high BET rates have been cut significantly, resulting in millions of dollars of savings.

Time-based transfers may be expanded by the TTC The TTC may expand the use of time-based transfers.

At its December meeting set for this week, the transit commission’s board is expected to approve a motion from chair Karen Stintz for a review of the TTC’s current transfer policy, which allows riders to take unlimited trips within a two-hour window – but only along the 512 St. Clair West streetcar line.

Time-based transfers were first introduced in 2005 as part of a TTC pilot program.

Independent research estimates the TTC would take a $15 million annual loss if the policy were expanded system-wide.

TTC transit enforcement officers will have the power

again to arrest unruly riders thanks to a new agreement with Toronto police.

The Toronto Police Services Board (TPSB) and the transit commission reached a deal late last week to designate some 40 officers part of the TTC’s transit enforcement unit (TEU) as special constables.

With the new status, the officers will be able to investigate incidents, conduct search and seizures and make arrests if need be.

Such powers were removed by the TPSB in 2011 following reports of special constables misusing their authority.

The police board agreed to return the expanded powers following an application by the TTC in the fall promising greater accountability.

Etobicoke nurse Sunleen Rathor honoured with leadership award An Etobicoke nurse has been named a recipient of this year’s fifth annual Ontario Long Term Care Association (OLTCA) Nursing Leadership Awards.

Sunleen Rathor, a registered practical nurse at Chartwell’s Westbury Long Term Care Residence in Etobicoke, was one of four nurses across Ontario to receive the award, which honours and celebrates nursing leaders in OLTCA’s 441 member homes providing care to more than 70,000 Ontario seniors.

She and the other three recipients will each receive a leadership development cash award of $2,500.

“These four individuals represent the best of the best – Ontario nursing professionals committed to proving the highest possible quality care to our province’s most fragile population, and at the same time, inspire their colleagues to provide exemplary care,” OLTCA CEO Candace Chartier said in a statement recognizing this year’s winners.

Listing availability spurs price growth GTA realtors reported 2,483 residential sales during the first two weeks of December. This represented an 18 per cent increase compared to 2,104 sales reported during the same period in 2012. The number of new listings entered into the TorontoMLS system was basically unchanged from a year ago.

“The key story in the GTA housing market continues to surround the availability of listings, or lack thereof. With the cost of homeownership remaining affordable, we have seen a resurgence in buying activity in the second half of 2013,” says Toronto Real Estate Board President Dianne Usher.

“However, growth in listings has not matched

growth in sales. The result has been more buyers competing for fewer listings. This is why we continue to experience strong price growth.”

The average selling price for December mid-month transactions was up 10 per cent to $520,379, compared to $471,602 reported for the first 14 days of December 2012.

“Inventory levels will remain low in many parts of the GTA in 2014, especially where lowrise home types are concerned, including single-detached and semi-detached houses and townhomes,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. “Expect above-inflation price growth to continue next year.”

M a r i l y n Fr i e d m a n n , the newest member of the MicroSkills board of directors, said the youth centre has for the last 10 years been “one of the few supports for youth in this neighbourhood”, offering a range of programs, including after-school programs, life skills, employment services, education support and leadership development.

But after a decade of program expansion and increasing client numbers, she added, the youth centre has outgrown its home.

“This (Rotary) initiative will lead to more innovative programming and support that can address some of the most difficult challenges currently faced by youth in our community and propel them to their full potential.”

Hazel Webb, MicroSkills’ longtime director of community programs and services, said that since the youth centre opened in Etobicoke a decade ago, she’s seen more than 100 of the local youth who’ve walked through the centre’s doors move on to post-secondary education and a “clear path to a brighter future.”

Many of them, like Zacharia Omar, have since returned themselves to help mentor their younger peers.

Omar, now a 25-year-old aspiring police officer, said he was just a 16-year-old kid when he first started attending MicroSkills programs.

“I had a lot of people supporting me, but a lot of kids in this neighbourhood don’t have that same support.

MicroSkills offers them that opportunity.”

had hoped for where the community health centre is, and that confirmation is that the soil and ground water there is fine,” said Gerard Caverson, VP of finance for the Vandyk Group of Companies in an interview with The Guardian Monday.

“So now we can move forward with allowing (Stonegate Community Health Centre) to stay, which was always our hope and certainly a bestcase scenario.”

Vandyk bought the 55-yearold Berry Road plaza in August and have since announced plans to redevelop the 5.3acre site to include three condominium buildings ranging in height from four to eight storeys, a series of townhouses and a large, two-storey commercial/retail building to accommodate a ground-floor grocery store, plus a secondstorey replacement space for Stonegate CHC. But before any of that construction can take place, the lengthy process of remediating the contaminated soil detected elsewhere on the site

will have to take place – contamination that was traced back to chemicals used by a long-closed dry cleaning business that used to operate out of the plaza.

Health centre remains Bev Leaver, Stonegate CHC’s executive director, said news the soil surrounding the centre was deemed clean, therefore allowing the centre to remain operational onsite until their new home is built in late 2015, came as a relief to staff and their 4,000 clients.

“It’s quite a relief to have some certainty about our future so that we can communicate that to our community, who were quite anxious about whether we would be forced to move,” Leaver said.

The transition is not without its bumps, however.

While the location of Stonegate CHC’s main operations will remain intact throughout its redevelopment, its Annex site, which is just a few doors down and

houses the centre’s dental services and children’s programming, is slated to be demolished some time in the new year.

Despite that setback, Leaver said she is committed to maintaining those services.

Leaver said the the services will either be relocated into the CHC’s main location or to an adjoining empty building just to the east of the health centre.

Now that Stonegate CHC’s short-term future has been assured, Leaver is looking to secure its long-term sustainability as an integral part of Vandyk’s vision for Stonegate Plaza by requesting the capital funding necessary to make the move into their new location from the Ministry of Health.

“We’ll move forward with that as quickly as possible so that we’ll have the funds to be a part of this project,” she said.

BMW debuts brand new 4 Series Coupe Two years ago, the latest sixth generation BMW 3 Series sedan debuted, adding station wagon, hybrid and GT variants as well. And a new 3 Series coupe seemed inevitable; especially since the 3 Series itself was founded on the E21 coupe 40 years ago.

But, despite the inherent cachet of the 3 Series name, BMW decided that its latest, newly designed and sporty midsize two-door coupe was deserving of its very own segment. Which is why the 2014 model year has now seen the debut of the new 4 Series Coupe.

The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupe is a little bigger than its 3 Series predecessor. It has a longer wheelbase and a wider track. Designers also lowered the roofline and ride height.

The lower platform brings the car’s centre of gravity down to below 500 mm, lower than any car in the current BMW line-up. And, as you’d expect, those new dimensions, along with steering and suspension tweaks, can only compliment BMW’s natural sport

handling traits.

The extra width is especially accentuated in the exterior design. Traditional BMW cues – the double kidney grille and four round headlights – have been stretched across a new front end with a large air intake and air curtains that channel airflow into the wheel wells, venting out again through new air breathers or “gill slits� behind the front wheels. The 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe comes in a four model selection based on two

engine choices, mated with either rearwheel drive or BMW’s xDrive system - a permanent four-wheel drive system with a normal 40/60 front/rear torque split that can adjust to send 100 per cent of power to either axle.

New RLX flagship ready to take on best in segment Acura rolled out the all-new RLX mid-luxury sedan in June, and it is outselling its predecessor by a factor of 5:1. The RLX is not only less stodgy than the car it replaces – with its sweeping profile, powerful shoulders, more pronounced wheel arches, and bolder front end – but is also wider and has a longer wheelbase.

This translates into a more powerful presence on the road and a more spacious passenger cabin.

Indeed, the extra 50 mm between the wheels helps give the RLX an added 64 mm of rear legroom, besting competitors like the BMW 535i, Lexus GS350 and Audi A6. You can really stretch out in back.

But it’s not simply being the largest and most expensive vehicle in the showroom that earns the RLX its flagship status. To be competitive with the European models, and now even the North Americans, performance must be up to scratch – technology even more so. And after a week behind the wheel of the 2014 RLX ‘Elite’ model (MSRP $62,190), it is apparent that Acura has checked all the right boxes.

The base package, at just a tick under $50K, has a long equipment list that won’t leave many buyers wanting. This includes tri-zone automatic climate control; heated front seats with 12-way power adjust; power tilt and telescoping steering that is leatherwrapped with audio, phone and cruise controls; smart key with push button start; power moonroof; seveninch infotainment display; multi-angle rearview camera; lane departure warning; 10-speaker AM/FM/XM/ CD/MP3 audio; Bluetooth and more.

The touchscreen display cuts the clutter. Many functions are available within its intuitive menu system, and it provides feedback in the form of a vibration under your fingertips.

Abundant soft-touch materials line the passenger cabin, and elements like the stitched leather instrument panel cover, woodgrain trim, chrome accents and ambient lighting, all combine for an upscale environment. I’ve always felt that Acura interiors are among the best in the business.

But my tester was the top of three trim levels that included all of the above, along with everything in the Tech model at $55,990, and much more.

Like the Tech, Elite includes such features as the AcuraLink Connectivity System, navigation on an additional eight-inch display, heated steering wheel, blind spot information system, rain-sensing wipers and Milano leather seating. But the extra $6K also adds parking sensors, auto-dimming side mirrors and other driver aids. You’re probably familiar with adaptive cruise control, which maintains a preset speed

and distance from the vehicle ahead. But ‘low-speed follow’, also part of the Elite package, extends this capability to stop-and-go traffic.

The Collision Mitigation Braking System uses radar to determine the distance and closing speed of objects ahead and if you don’t heed the warnings, it will tighten your seatbelt and apply the binders. This won’t necessarily prevent an accident, but should reduce the impact.

And lastly, the e-pretensioners automatically snug your seatbelts when sensors detect anything out of the ordinary. Say, for example, going a little hard into a corner. Elite also receives some less complex goodies, like power rear sunshade, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and manual sunshades in the rear side windows.

The RLX exterior hasn’t missed out on Acura’s high tech treatment. Case in point is the Jewel Eye headlamps that create a striking element with their dualstacked array of LEDs to illuminate the road. It works as well as any HID headlamps I’ve tested, while using less power – just 68 watts in total. There are LEDs in the taillights as well.

Sport mode delays shifts from the six-speed SportShift automatic (for better acceleration) and adds weight to the electric power steering. This function may see little use from those who’d buy the RLX, and won’t turn the car into an M5, but it does notch up the fun factor. Resist the urge to mash the pedal, and you’ll be rewarded with surprising fuel economy.

Maybe not equal to its 10.5/6.4/8.6L/100km (city/ hwy/comb) NRCan rating, but more than you would expect from a vehicle of this size and heft.

Also surprising for a large, mid-size sedan is this Acura’s agility. Thanks to precision all-wheel steering (P-AWS), it handles more like a sports sedan than a boulevard cruiser.

P-AWS senses the right amount of independent rear-wheel steering (toe angle) needed for the driving conditions and can apply up to 2.0 degrees of negative or positive toe angle. It’s subtle, but enough to deliver crisper lane changes (all wheels angled the same direction), sharper low-speed turns (wheels angled opposite), and more confident handling on twisty roads. In particular in snowy conditions is where PAWS counteracts understeer through the corners.

Joey Votto sets up foundation to help post-traumatic stress disorder victims NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke’s Joey Votto, who picked up his fourth straight Tip O’Neill Award as Canada’s baseball player of the year, is going to bat for military families affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Richview Collegiate Institute grad, who has gone on to become one of baseball’s biggest stars with the Cincinnati Reds, hosted his foundation’s inaugural event Dec. 5 near Cincinnati.

“Although neither I, nor anyone in my family, has served. I do know what it feels like to suffer from panic attacks, depression and emotional struggles after a lifechanging event,” Votto wrote in a column on Cincinnati. com, announcing the foundation.

“I received much-needed and very effective treatment.

Without it, I am not sure where I would be today.”

His decision to help military families, he said, was sparked by Sept. 11.

“I still remember the images of the burning buildings on 9-11. As my father and I sat in front of our television, he looked at me and said, ‘If we go to war, you may have to go.’ At 18 years old and one day, it was at that moment I

realized the personal impact of the sacrifices made by those who serve.

He said he hopes the foundation will help to bring “hope to those in Cincinnati and my native Toronto who sacrificed for us and now need our assistance.”

Meanwhile, in the midst of setting up his foundation he learned of his award, which was announced Dec. 13.

His win now puts him behind only Maple Ridge B.C. native Larry Walker who earned the award nine times.

“It is very flattering to be mentioned in any discussion that includes Larry Walker, who represented our country with such dedication and professionalism during his major league career,” Votto said. “I have to thank the Baseball Hall of Fame for its efforts in promoting our great game in Canada.”

Toronto council has approved a $53-million contract to take the stink out of the sewage at the Humber Bay Sewage Treatment Plant.

But Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug Ford drew the ire of their colleagues on council, for implying that the process in awarding the contract might have the stink of impropriety about it.

The war of words exploded after a lengthy in-camera session considering the bid by WCC Construction Canada (ULC) to install odour control and process upgrades at the west-end sewage treatment plant. Councillor Doug Ford asked Public Works Committee Chair Denzil Minnan-Wong whether any lobbying had occurred on the contract.

“It’s a very simple question – was there any registered lobbyist on this bid?” demanded Councillor Ford.

Speaker Frances Nunziata ruled the question out of order, at which point Mayor Rob Ford stood to defend his brother’s right to ask.

“I will definitely not be supporting this until we get the answers on whether councillors have been lobbied or not,” he said.

Meanwhile, other councillors pointed out that the information was available online at the city’s Lobbyist Registrar, and said that the line of questioning impugned both the process and Toronto council.
