Showcasing the ‘mosaic’ of Rexdale Rexdale Women’s Centre celebrates its 35th anniversary this month CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Rexdale Women’s Centre (RWC) is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary this month with its annual Walk-4-Change, followed by a Multicultural Mosaic
of Rexdale celebration. Both events, which take place on Friday, Sept. 13, are designed to encourage cross-cultural understanding and to provide local residents with the opportunity to showcase their cultural heritage, said RWC project co-
ordinator Sonya Aslan. “In terms of the Walk-4Change, the reason we do it is it provides us with an opportunity to promote community awareness and connections, and it showcases the multicultural diversity of north Etobicoke.
It also allows residents to join forces with Rexdale Women’s Centre in our efforts to promote respect, understanding and awareness of the trials, tribulations and successes that residents encounter,” Aslan said, >>>EXPERIENCE, page 10
Toronto police spokesperson Const. Tony Vella is considering a run at the vacant Etobicoke Centre Ward 3 council seat. Vella confirmed in an interview Wednesday he is eyeing the possibility in what is fast becoming a crowded field of potential candidates for the central Etobicoke councillor’s job. “I’ve always had a keen interest in politics, particularly in the last several years. I have a passion for helping people,” said Vella, who has worked for Toronto police for 18 years, the past five in communications. “One thing I believe in is representing people. You have to be an active listener. Listen to people’s concerns and provide them with solutions. Make decisions for the entire community.” Vella has lived in Etobicoke in Ward 6 for the past 12 years. He said he would be interested in running in the 2014 municipal election. The Toronto City Council seat is vacant after veteran councillor and former deputy mayor Doug Holyday won the Aug. 1 provincial byelection to become Etobicoke-Lakeshore’s Conservative MPP.
