Townhouses approved in Islington, Norseman area West-end councillors gave the green light to zoning bylaw amendments that will pave the way for a mixed-use development on the site of the old Sunbeam building in Ward 5 this week.

The application unanimously approved by Etobicoke York Community Council on Tuesday, Feb. 23 proposes the development of 176 townhouse units and a 4,024-square-metre, 25-unit industrial building on the site at 1030 and 1040 Islington Ave. at Norseman Street.

Also approved was a draft plan of a subdivision that will create five blocks and three new public streets through the residential

area on the easterly portion of the site, one of which will provide a connection between Islington and Norseman.

In exchange, the owner of the site will be required to enter into a Section 37 agreement with the city worth $325,000: $315,000 allocated to streetscape improvements along The Queensway between Islington and Royal York Road, and $10,000 toward capital improvements to Fairfield Park.

FEAT peer mentorship program gets $50k boost When was

There, they excitedly share the high and low points of their day, their feelings, and sometimes, their stress.

One boy spontaneously upturns himself into a backward bend. Moments later, another boy shares how his mom broke her wrist the day before.

For some, it’s a rare safe place to open up with other kids who understand and to mentors they trust.

Tuesday afternoon was a typical day in the peer mentorship program for kids ages six to 13 run by FEAT (Fostering, Empowering, Advocating, Together) for Children of Incarcerated Parents at Franklin Horner Community Centre during the simultaneously rarest of days.

Aviva Canada representatives presented FEAT cofounders Derek Reid and his daughter, Jessica, an oversized Aviva yellow cheque for $50,000, the grand prize in the 2015 Aviva Community Fund national competition.

Aviva Canada has awarded $6.5 million to more than 222 Canadian charities and community groups in the past seven years.

“We’re very excited to win,” Derek Reid said. “The program was kind of on life support. It couldn’t have happened at a better time.”

If Aviva is a lifeline for FEAT’s program, the program is a lifeline for the kids.

FEAT runs the same program Wednesday nights at Ephraim’s Place Community Centre in North York, which serves kids in the Jane-Finch and Jane-Sheppard neighbourhoods.

has been. It makes me feel at home.”

by FEAT every Saturday and Sunday.

FEAT charges $30 for return bus trips to Warkworth Prison in Campbellford, Ont., and $40 for trips to Kingston prisons.

Otherwise, the run would cost well more than $100, well out of reach of many families, Derek Reid said.

The Reids offer riders support, information and a listening ear.

“It helps me in school,” Rayshawn said of the peer mentorship program. “Before, I couldn’t really talk to anyone about (my dad being in prison). It made me feel stressed. This has helped me feel less stressed and to be more open.”

model, which can result in compromised self-esteem, trust and sense of security in family relationships, school truancy, a decline in academic achievement, as well as antisocial attitudes and behaviours, the Reids said. peer connection “It connects kids with one another and with a positive role model, so important with the loss particularly of a loved one, a parent, on the inside,” said Jessica Reid, who has a background in teaching and psychology.

“That absence from the child’s life can lead to low self-esteem. A lot are bullied at school, doing poor academically, there can be mental health challenges. All these can be antecedents to a potential lifetime of crime.”

Five years ago, Jessica taught in Alberta. She had three children in her class with dads in prison.

She connected particularly with one, a young girl.

“She had light eyes and

dark hair, longing for a relationship with her dad,” Jessica said. “She’d tell me how much she missed him, how much she wanted to hug him.”

Jessica could relate. Her dad, Derek, didn’t know of her existence until she was 24.

Once they met, Jessica asked Derek to help her research whether any organizations existed in Canada to support kids of incarcerated parents. They found none.

“It’s unbelievable that in 2011, at-risk kids were totally forgotten about in Canada, which is such a progressive country,” Jessica said, recalling her shock, adding programs do exist in the U.S. and the U.K. Devin Murphy-Eagleson, 19, a program mentor, is a Centennial College social service work student.

“Some of the kids are angry, some are aggressive,” he said of the kids. “Others are very quiet and keep to themselves.

They’re very closed off. They don’t really open up.

“Some have a parent in for a few years, some more than

20 years, some have parents who were deported.”

Murphy-Eagleson empathizes with the kids. His own parents had been incarcerated when he was young.

Both are now out, and part of his life.

“I try to relate to them.

Sometimes, I relate my own experiences. I do what the kids want to do. It’s really about getting the kids to help themselves, helping them to open up to people.”

Peer support and mentorship programs have been shown to reduce problem behaviours and to improve academic performance among participants, the Reids said, noting FEAT shares those outcomes in its program.

“It’s so important we really get in there at a young age.

Obviously, early intervention is key to changing how kids think,” Derek Reid said.

“Growth among younger kids tends to be bigger than the changes we see in 14, 15 or 16 year olds because the younger kids are willing to learn and to change.”

Wondering when the snow plow went through a street or sidewalk you intend to use?

Well, the City of Toronto has taken out the guesswork out of it with a new web page.

The web page enables residents to see the location of plows, sidewalk plows and salt trucks and when individual streets were serviced by the City’s winter operations crews.

The new web page uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) installed on plows and salt trucks to determine when a road was serviced by using a colour coded system. If a road was serviced within the last four hours, the road will be shown with a green line. If a road was serviced within the last four to 12 hours, the road will be shown with a blue line and if serviced between 12 to 24 hours earlier, the road will be coloured red. The web page is available at http:// www.toronto.ca/plowTO At this time, information on exactly when plows or salt trucks will service specific streets is not available.

Varying amounts of snow received during any snow episode and potential route changes make it difficult to predict exactly when vehicles will attend to certain roads, the city said.

Some winter operations equipment including bus stop plows, hand crews and supervisory and support vehicles is not displayed on the web page.

Tory’s L.A. trip will boost Toronto’s film and TV industry

onsidering that film and television production work is worth $1-billion a year to Toronto, we think it’s a good idea Mayor John Tory is heading out to Los Angeles for a business mission in support of the industry. The mayor of one of the world’s largest centres for film, television and digital media production should be making annual visits to help promote and protect what is an important business to our city. And he goes at an especially good time as the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar makes shooting movies and television shows in Toronto even more attractive for American production companies.

“Toronto’s film and television sector is a growing source of jobs and economic growth,” said Tory in a city press release.

Along with the dollars the industry pumps into Toronto’s economy, it’s also helping grow an valuable source of local our view extremely talent, which benefits our city on so many levels. Being a centre of Trip helps film and television production makes Toronto a cultural hub promote T.O.’s also in Canada for those industries. It builds a strong community of not economy only people in the creative arts, but also in the many technical sides of the industry from high-tech digital imaging, to sound systems, to set building, special effects, catering, transportation, hotels and more. It’s an industry that also builds Toronto a profile beyond the film industry as it also helps increase tourism. While in Los Angeles, Tory has meetings planned with 11 major studios including CBS, Paramount, Warner and Sony. According to the city, those studios alone have more than $800-million worth of projects planned for Toronto in 2016 alone. Tory is not going by himself on this trip either, as he is bringing a delegation of both film and tourism professionals from the city with him.

They represent Canadian companies and the local hospitality industry, and are making the trip with the mayor on their own dime. There are nine partners as part of the mayor’s delegation and they are paying $5,000 each to sponsor An Evening With Canada’s Stars that will showcase Canadian excellence in the industry as part of the visit. Tory will also meet with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. While some may see this as a nice excuse for the mayor to get out to California at the end of February, we view it as an important part of the job, promoting local industry and looking after the economic health of Toronto.

‘Crazy’ gondola scheme might be stretching it If you’re going to pitch a crazy transit scheme like gondolas across the Don Valley to service a fancy artisanal market, probably it’s best to make sure that nobody’s planning an extravagant mea-culpa about their crazy transit scheme within the same week.

Such is the unhappy circumstance that the entrepreneurial gondola-iers at Bullwheel International Cable Car Corp., who pitched their plan to stretch cable across the Don Valley just days before Metrolinx moved to slash prices on the Union-Pearson Express train to boost its gossamerthin ridership.

The train was at one time touted as a major economic development boost, providing a quick link between Union Station and Pearson airport. The investment – $465 million – was deemed worthwhile, even as the private sector consortium initially interested in the project lost interest, and in

david nickle the city 2010 Metrolinx took the whole thing over.

The private sector clearly knew something that the public sector leadership didn’t, because the rail line opened up with tepid ridership.

It wasn’t hard to see why.

With few stations, and those that existed difficult to access, the only way that the 25-minute airport ride could be a convenience would be for those travellers who were staying or holding meetings within a short walk of Union Station.

And with the price point of $27 one way, really only executives with an expense account would have any reason to ride it.

But for that class of traveller, an airport limo ride with door-to-terminal service would only cost a few dollars more.

What a terrible idea that

airport express train was.

What a terrible, seductive idea.

It was so seductive, of course, because it played to that aspirational myth that is so damaging to Toronto’s more necessary priorities: namely, that we need to dress ourselves up in the manner of much larger cities in Europe and America in order to remain competitive.

So if there are trains from Stockholm’s downtown to its airport, and an express train between Victoria Station and Gatwick Airport in London, what fun it would be for us to be like that too.

So many of our major transit initiatives have sprung from that ethos.

In the 1990s, then North York mayor Mel Lastman fought tooth and nail to make sure there was money for the Sheppard subway, because he knew that building it would validate the Yonge-Sheppard hub that was to be his old city’s

downtown.

Scarborough is getting an absurd, one-stop subway extension to the Scarborough Town Centre, because residents there have been convinced that a subway is the path to civic legitimacy.

The gondolas as described sound like a lot of fun – soaring over the leafy glories of the Don Valley, carrying passengers from the million-dollar-homes of prime Riverdale to the boutiques and paths of the Evergreen Brick Works in the Don Valley and back.

It sounds almost enough fun to subsidize with tax dollars when the logistics prove too costly and the revenues too slim for the private sector.

The worst that can happen is you might have to cut your fares.

A Ravenscrest Drive home that once housed a man credited with hiding Anne Frank’s family during the Holocaust is one step closer to being designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Etobicoke York Community Council unanimously supported an application to designate Coulter House, at 112 Ravenscrest Dr., as a heritage property at its Tuesday, Feb. 23 meeting.

“Located in the area southeast of Eglinton Avenue West and Martin Grove Road, where it is historically linked to the Richview community, the Coulter House is a rare surviving example in Etobicoke of a late 19th century Ontario house with gothic revival styling that retains its architectural integrity and its original orientation in its historical setting,” city planning staff wrote in a report recommending that city council state its intention to designate the building.

The circa-1874 property is historically associated with Victor Kugler, an internationally recognized member of the Dutch Resistance during the Second World War, who,

with others, helped hide Anne Frank, author of The Diary of a Young Girl, and her family from the Nazis during the German occupation of the Netherlands.

At Otto Frank’s request, the State of Israel honoured Kugler with the Vad Vashem Medal as a “Righteous among the Nations” in 1972.

In Canada, Kugler, who was a tenant of Coulter House from 1955 to 1965, also received awards from the Canadian Congress of Christians and Jews, and the Canadian Anti-Defamation League, as well as a key to the former city of North York.

In addition to its ties to Kugler, Coulter House is also historically linked to the development of Etobicoke, in particular the historical hamlet of Richview, which emerged in the mid-19th century near present-day Eglinton Avenue West and Hwy. 427, according to the city planning division’s report.

“With his farm located southwest of Richview’s crossroads, Robert Coulter participated in the community as the co-founder of the non-denominational Union Chapel...and as a public school trustee for over 30 years,” the report reads.

Planning staff also notes that Coulter House is distinguished by its “pattern brick detailing” identified with the gothic revival style, its “crossgable roof ”, its “unusual moulded keystones”, and the application of “contrasting buff on red brick.”

Toronto police launch cold case website to generate tips Oldest case is 1959 murder of 12-year-old Patricia Lupton in Scarborough ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police have unveiled a new homicide cold case website in an effort to generate tips on more than 500 cases, some dating back six decades.

“We would encourage members of the public to go onto the website and use social media to spread the word on the individual cases and persons that are wanted for outstanding murders,” police chief Mark Saunders told reporters at a news conference earlier this month.

“We can use the technology and advance investigations and hold those that are (responsible) accountable for these offences.”

A murder case is usually taken over by the cold case section if it remains unsolved after three years.

The new website allows people to search more than

500 cold cases.

The oldest is the murder of 12-year-old Patricia Lupton.

She was found suffering from trauma off McCowan Road south of Ellesmere Road at about 7:05 p.m. March 9, 1959 and later pronounced dead on scene. Patricia was last seen alive about 90 minutes earlier, leaving her home en route to Kennedy Park Plaza.

“Each case is important to us, despite its age,” Saunders stressed.

“When information about any of these cases surface, investigators review and assess to see if anything can be done to advance the investigation. Homicide investigations have always been, no matter how long ago, given top priority as there is no greater responsibility than investigating the death of another human being.”

In order to lay charges,

police need physical evidence and/or witness testimony.

Police hope that as time passes, some witnesses will have a change of heart and come forward.

“This webpage is an additional tool that we can use to communicate with the public and seek out information,” Saunders said.

The “most wanted” section of the website highlights cases where an offender is identified.

“From time to time over the years, the trail of a person wanted for homicide goes stale. Some slip out of the country, move to another province, take up an alias, c h a n g e a p p e a r a n c e s ,” Saunders said. “In all, we have 30 outstanding arrest warrants for homicide cases, the oldest dating back to 1983.”

There are also a number of cases where police have the offenders’ DNA.

“All we require to solve these cases is a name,” Saunders said. “There are people out there who know who these offenders are in each of these cases, and all we require from them is to bring that name forward to us.”

But food accessibility, one of the health centre’s functions, still hasn’t been served as no grocer could be secured for the development.

“The idea of the supermarket was exhausted,” Bev Leaver, the Stonegate Community Health Centre’s executive director said. “All of the major grocers were appealed to and were not able.”

But a food coop could take a grocer’s place. Selling locally sourced produce and providing work-to-eat programs, the coop option could be a suitable substitute for a grocery story in the largely low-income Stonegate community.

But the identity of that non-profit is hush-hush.

“Because the Stonegate health centre is part of our development and they are

connected to the Parkdale Community Health Centre, we researched the kind of partnership they have in Parkdale and we want to replicate the same thing,” Chan said when asked how a food coop came into the equation. “We found the two communities have similarities.”

Leaver suggested the ambivalence toward full disclosure is because the deal hasn’t been finalized.

“It’s not confirmed, they’re not ready to commit to that,” Leaver said. “We’re very excited about working with an organization like the West End Food Coop.”

Leaver wants both inexpensive and organic options from whatever food coop VANDYK brings into the fold, the kind of affordability she said isn’t available in Parkdale’s location.

The current lack of a supermarket along the west side of the Humber River between Bloor Street and The Queensway has been described as a food desert.

“Understanding that 30 per cent of youth in this area live in poverty, understanding that the seniors can’t get to grocery stores, how do we create a community hub?” asked Councillor Justin Di Ciano during Tuesday’s meeting.

The Stonegate Community Health Centre is running nutrition programs during the redevelopment with Food Share, a non-profit organization, for locals unable to pay bus fare or walk elsewhere.

“I was pleased the developer (VANDYK) allowed us to stay on site so we didn’t have to disrupt our services during construction,” Leaver said.

“We’ve been working very closely with them on shaping what the other services will be like the pharmacy, a food store.”

The three condos’ heights will include one 10-storey, one seven-storey and one six to eight-storey building, collectively containing 505 apartments.

Councillors argued the

need for a proposed private roadway in the development.

VANDYK convinced councillors to adopt a private multi-use roadway called a “Woonerf” throughout the site where bikes, pedestrians and cars could share the street.

“We wanted to create a hub, a gathering space that was the focal point of the Stonegate community,” Chan said. “We wanted to make the aesthetics of even the road feel like pedestrians dominated as opposed to vehicles.”

Neil Cresswell, Toronto’s director of City Planning, said he did not share Chan’s optimism, saying the site needs regular city streets to support increased density.

Di Ciano said he is excited about the private street.

“The Woonerf-style streets is something the more I research, the more excited I am to see,” Di Ciano said.

“I think we’ve been able to achieve most of our objectives.

Victoria Industrial School for Boys helps care, train and improve boys The Victoria Industrial School for Boys officially opened to great fanfare on May 16, 1887 when a six-car train arrived at Mimico, festooned with flags and flowers, and carrying the governor general, Lord Lansdowne, and 350 other dignitaries and citizens.

This new residential school was built “to provide a place where vagrant boys can be taken care of, trained, and improved, instead of being sent to gaol to be hardened and made vicious among older criminals.”

Superintendent W.J. Hendrie made it clear the school differed from a reformatory in that there were no bars or cells like a prison.

The boys were not criminals, but needed help by “acquiring a home feeling and habits of industry and obedience in the kindly atmosphere of the School.”

It was the first institution of its kind in Canada. The students were aged 10 to 14, and came to the school through the Toronto School Board Truancy Department. The boys lived in three or four-storey “cottages” where a matron acted as “mother” and a guard as “father”. The guards also taught the boys trades, such as carpentry, printing, farming, baking

denise harris history corner and tailoring. Eventually, the school had six cottages, a farm with greenhouses, a hospital, a school with an assembly hall, a skating rink, a gym with a swimming pool, workshops and an administrative building.

Operated on a military model, the boys wore gray and red uniforms, and each day was highly structured, typically consisting of 9.5 hours of sleep, 4.5 hours of work, 3.5 hours of school, three hours of recreation/ play, two hours in the cottage and 1.5 hours for meals.

Teachers were provided by the Toronto School Board, and on Sundays the boys attended church.

However, attitudes and methods for dealing with problems change over time. The school gradually changed into a place that housed more hardened boys with criminal histories.

In 1928, Victoria Industrial School was renamed Mimico Reform School, with all of the criminal connotations that new name implied.

In October 1934, provincial minister of welfare, David Croll, announced the Mimico facility was being closed and all boys transferred to the Bowmanville Boys’ School, thereby removing “a largely artificial

distinction between types of youths who have been sent to one or the other institution.”

By December, the facility was vacant and the property turned over to the adult Ontario Reformatory, which had been located to the west

of the school since 1913, and which has its own story to tell one day.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.”

But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly!

It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.”

Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies.

And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

TCCF holds ValenTine’s eVenT To help Children in need on Feb. 13., The Caribbean Children Foundation (TCCF) held its Be My Valentine - roses & Chocolates event in support of children in need. Tickets were $45 with proceeds going to help children in the Caribbean in urgent need of medical care. Currently, TCCF is working with the international Children’s heart Foundation (iChF) to visit Guyana and care for children with congenital heart disease. The group made three two-week medical mission trips to Guyana in 2015 already. TCCF is a volunteer-run charity that puts all funds towards the care of children. It’s a snowy day in February and I thought I would take a moment and update you on the Rexdale Real Estate Market. What a difference a year makes! I have always felt that Rexdale was undervalued compared to the rest of Toronto and one day we would catch up. We’re doing that in leaps and bounds. While doing the research on this article I was amazed at how much prices had changed in a couple of years. There is no doubt in my mind that in the near future we will be named as one of the up and coming “hot spots” in Toronto. The fact that the Woodbine race track is expanding will only benefit the Rexdale Real Estate Market.

2015 was an incredible year! Let me give you the facts. In 2010 the Rexdale Real Estate market (W10) sold a total of 506 single family homes (detached/Semi’s or links) of which 81 were over $400,000. In 2012 out of 505 homes sold 309 were over $400,000. In 2015 out of 563 homes sold in Rexdale 559 sold over $400,000. Wow, that is quite a jump! At the present time there are a total 29 properties FOR SALE. To say that is very little is an under statement. This is an ideal Seller’s market very little competition and Buyer’s are looking for properties. Ontario’s Transportation Minister preached patience o n g row i n g t h e Un i o n Pearson’s moribund ridership while expressing confidence numbers will climb as a result of a fare cut.

Steven Del Duca confirmed fares for UP will be dropping significantly, to 50 per cent less for travel on the four-stop rail service between Union Station and Toronto Pearson Airport. For residents living along the rail corridor, the fare cuts mirror local GO service, with a price slash of nearly $7 for a one-stop trip between Bloor and Union.

The fare change takes effect Wednesday, March 9, right before the March Break holiday.

The UP Express has seen a steady reduction in the number of passengers since its launch last year.

“Notwithstanding the efforts of Metrolinx (to grow ridership), we continue to be troubled by the fact numbers weren’t coming up as quickly as we like them to,” said Del Duca, who made the announcement at UP’s Union Station stop Tuesday. “So in advance of March Break we

want to put forth a more affordable option for commuters in the region.”

Del Duca said record ridership for UP over the Family Day weekend, when rides were free, saw nearly 43,000 people make use of the service, making a convincing case there is solid demand for the service if fares are reasonable.

“Our job now is to drive up awareness of the service,” he said.

Metrolinx had initially set a target of 5,000 daily riders for UP’s first year of operations.

With the fare reduction, Del Duca said he was optimistic the service will be able to hit that benchmark by June 2016.

A recent Metrolinx staff report indicated the cumulative daily UP ridership between November and December was 2,400.

Less clear is how the reduction will affect the province’s stated aim to have UP eventually recover its operating costs.

The fare cut is something UP’s critics have called for since pricing for the service was announced before last summer’s Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in Toronto. Despite praise for the quality of service, the trains since UP’s June

launch – beyond an initial boost during the Games – have remained largely empty, something Del Duca admitted at Tuesday afternoon’s announcement.

Even so, TTCriders, one of UP’s most strident critics, was disappointed fares weren’t reduced further.

“At double the cost of a token to ride from Dundas West to Union Station the train is still not a mass transit line for all of us,” said the group in a statement.

Metrolinx’s board of directors held a special meeting Tuesday evening to formally ratify the price change.

Academic All-Canadian is in a tough course - engineering NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke native Jennifer Thompson has again been honoured for successfully juggling varsity sports with her post-secondary studies in the tough engineering stream.

A member of the women’s hockey team at Dalhousie University in Halifax, she has been recognized for the second consecutive year as an Academic All Canadian.

The designation is annually bestowed upon post-secondary athletes on varsity teams who are also able to maintain an ‘A’ average (over 80 per cent) in the classroom.

Each year, less than 3,000 student-athletes from more than 50 post secondary institutions accomplish this feat.

Currently in her third season as a forward for the varsity hockey team, Thompson, who attended Ursula Franklin Academy in west Toronto, also landed in the spotlight for two other off-ice accomplishments.

She’s the recipient of an NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Award as well as the Bruce and Dorothy Rosetti Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship.

She modestly attributes her achievements to a team effort.

parents encouraged me to explore the field of engineering because it would open doors to many career paths,” Thompson said. “I volunteer as a math and science tutor because I want to encourage young women to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.”

Currently pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, she plans to pursue a career in the field of renewable energy upon graduation.

Etobicoke’s top two women’s hockey teams – both based out of the MasterCard Centre in south Etobicoke – have made the playoffs.

But both have their work cut out for them, having nabbed the last available spot, which carries with it a playoff date against the first-place team.

The Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins finished in 16th spot in the 20-team Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), featuring the top junior players in Ontario, with 34 points in 38 games. They’ll hook up with first-place Durham West Jr. Lightning in the league’s best-of-five opening round.

The schedule had yet to be released.

The Toronto Furies finished fourth in the five-team Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), the top women’s hockey league in Canada, with 14 points in 24 games. They’ll face firstplace Les Canadiennes de Montreal (42 points) for a best-of-three series that will be held Feb. 26-28, all in Montreal.

Saturday’s game is slated to be broadcast nationwide on Sportsnet 360 at 5 p.m.

The other league semifinal series features Brampton Thunder taking on host Calgary Inferno.

The Boston Blades, who saw a loss of players to a new U.S. league, finished last.

PWHL’s top scorer An Etobicoke native led the PWHL in scoring.

Daryl Watts, who suits up for the Mississauga Chiefs, led the league by a wide margin with 65 points (30 goals, 35 assists) in 34 games.

That put her ahead of her teammate Mikyla Grant-Mentis, a Brampton resident, with 49 points (21 goals, 28 assists) in 37 games.

Watts started her hockey career at one time playing in both the Humber Valley Sharks and the Etobicoke Dolphins organizations.

The Patriots have been eliminated from playoff contention for some time as they head into their final game of the season this Sunday, Feb. 28, 7:45 p.m. at Westwood Arena against Mississauga who have also been eliminated.

The Patriots head into the game with 42 points in 53 games while Mississauga currently has 23 points from 52 games.
