Dental clinic offers up free cleanings for a day Services offered for free as part of annual Gift From the Heart campaign CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Nine people who couldn’t have otherwise afforded dental care walked out of the Dental Hygiene Group clinic in Etobicoke last weekend with whiter smiles on their faces, thanks to the Gift From the Heart event.

Corinne Allain, the clinic’s owner and operator, said she felt compelled to participate for the second time in the national event – an annual, one-day affair that sees independent dental hygienists across Canada offer their services free-of-charge to those in need – out of a desire to give back to the community.

“I always like to reach out locally, to the community that I work in versus trying to find causes that are bigger, because I really like the local involvement that happens when you do this kind of

stuff,” she said of Saturday’s event, which drew eight volunteers – four of Allain’s dental hygienist colleagues, a dental hygiene student, and three others – over the course of the 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. event.

“We saw nine clients, all adults, and a couple of whom had never had a cleaning before, so it was nice to give them that experience. They all left smiling because their teeth looked better, so it was a good day.”

The Gift From the Heart event also acts as an awareness-raising opportunity to inform members of the community of the high-quality, lower-cost services offered at independent hygiene clinics such as Allain’s.

At the Dental Hygiene Group clinic, which Allain opened at 3391 Bloor St. W. Unit 5, two years ago this April, patients can access all the dental hygiene services they could at a regular dentist office – from cleanings and whitenings, to hygiene instruction, and laser treatments for cold sores and gum disease. But because there is no dentist in practice at such independent dental hygiene clinics, the charges for such treatments are reduced by 10 to 30 per cent, Allain

explained.

During this year’s Gift From the Heart event on Saturday, Feb. 7, Allain and the four other independent dental hygienists who volunteered their time, not only provided free teeth cleanings to nine patients who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford dental services, but also conducted free oral cancer and blood pressure screenings.

“It’s always nice to give back to people who are appreciative; who can’t afford to get the care they need for one reason or another,” Allain said. “This year, our list was filled with people who hadn’t had a cleaning in at least three years and who didn’t have insurance or any access to dental care. We were totally booked and we had a waiting list again this year, which I think is pretty telling to the need in the community.”

With the success of this year’s Gift From the Heart event, Allain said looking forward to participating once again next year.

Focus on legacy of Pan Am Games

H

ow can Toronto optimize the legacy of the upcoming Pan Am Games?

What opportunities are there to create lasting change in our communities as a result of hosting the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games this summer?

In this space last week, we wrote of how the Pan Am Path, an 84-kilometre trail being built to connect communities across the Toronto region, could create a living legacy for the city.

It’s not the only example.

Consider the facility construction and renovation that have taken place in Toronto because of the Games: The Aquatics Centre at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. The track and field facility at York University in North York. The renovated Etobicoke Olympium. The Pan Am / Parapan Am Fields at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus. Several sites in CIBC Pan Am Park located along the shores of Lake Ontario, including Exhibition Place, Ontario Place and the West Channel.

We can make use of those our view facilities in terms of promoting physical activity and Take advantage enabling community particiin local events. There of all the Games pation are significant opportunities offer to Toronto to impact the lives of many Torontonians.

Consider that there’s an entire neighbourhood – the Canary District – in the West Don Lands being constructed that will serve as temporary home for athletes this summer. Following the Games, that neighbourhood must integrate into the surrounding community and the city as a whole. How that transpires can serve as an example for other neighbourhoods when they experience a major development.

And it’s not just bricks and mortar examples. There are opportunities for local businesses. There’s the opportunity to learn more about another culture being represented at the Games. There’s the volunteer experience.

This isn’t about whether having the Games in Toronto is a good idea or not. We’re past that point.

This is about making use of what the city will have after the Games and building the best possible legacy.

There is potential to enable positive change on a grand scale.

Learn more about the Games. Learn more about the facilities and parks being built. Understand how you as a resident of Toronto can take full advantage of Games facilities to create a better lifestyle once the Games are done. Anything less would simply be a wasted opportunity.

Will residents sign a blank cheque for new subway?

P

redictably, Toronto council didn’t want to trouble itself this week with more questions about the Scarborough subway plan.

Councillor Josh Matlow dared them to do otherwise – submitting five fairly uncomfortable administrative inquiries poking holes in council’s plans to hike taxes and build an expensive three-stop subway along a route that had been slated for a fully funded seven stop light rail line.

Questions asked, questions answered, Toronto council decided, voting overwhelmingly to approve a motion from Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker to receive the inquiries and not send them along to Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee.

The questions were answered, by City Manager Joe Pennachetti as the rules require. Given those answers, one might have thought councillors would be interested in a little more talk.

Matlow wondered about the

david nickle the city sunk costs that the city will be responsible for paying on the cancellation of the light rail line. Pennachetti said he’d report later, although leaked documents indicate it sits at $75 million. In 2013, they were estimated at $10 million more.

What will the new subway cost to run, now? Pennachetti said $30 to $40 million a year for capital maintenance. It’s not known how much it will cost to run; it will depend on the service levels that council approves. How much help the city will get for operating is an open question.

What of SmartTrack and its impact on ridership of the subway? All of that will be factored in to further studies emerging as the Scarborough subway environmental assessment unfolds, and the SmartTrack preliminary work proceeds.

And what is that ridership?

In 2006, the city estimated 9,500 people per hour. In 2013, the ridership was estimated at 14,000. Pennachetti explained that the new results came in a rush based on other variables.

In the end, only six councillors thought those questions required more study.

De Baeremaeker, with the blessing of Mayor Tory, carried the day and the whole matter is shelved.

After the vote, De Baeremaeker pointed out that many of the questions Matlow posed had been answered in 2013 when council made the leap from light rail to subway. And he accused Matlow of simply using those questions as a back door to reopen the matter and build light rail rather than subways in Scarborough.

Well, of course he is.

Matlow opposed the subway for those reasons in 2013, and he’s opposing it again now.

Things change. Among other things, De Baeremaeker

is proposing another $150 million for a fourth station on the line. In a scrum after the vote, De Baeremaeker wouldn’t rule out supporting an even longer route, for billions more, if the environmental assessment said it was a good idea.

Matlow is not the only one uncomfortable with this. Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong voted against the subway in 2013 and still thinks there are problems.

But that’s not the same thing as wanting to reopen the matter. The public wants to get on with things is the mantra; no one wants more debate.

There is one more question though: are Torontonians tired enough of debate to sign a blank cheque for a transit plan that’s looking more and more like a bad fit?

Guess we’ll find out.

Bring a restaurant, Winners to Cloverdale Mall, says reader To the editor: Re: ‘Cloverdale working on Target closure transition,’ News, Jan. 22 I would like to see Winners move into a large store at Cloverdale. Not sure if they would be open to it but it would allow them to have more housewares and baby items.

Another idea is to have a store that also has a restaurant in it. We truly miss having a restaurant at Cloverdale. Or maybe splitting the Target store into two stores, with one being a restaurant.

I remember coming to Cloverdale when it was an open air mall. We shop at Metro every week. I find that a lot of stores in Sherway are catering to the much younger crowd; I prefer Cloverdale. Having a grocery, drug, liquor, book store is very convenient.

Having a restaurant would add to our enjoyment. We use to come to the restaurant every Sunday after hockey to have lunch.Thank you for asking for the public opinions.

Smaller boutiques, restaurant would improve Cloverdale upon Target’s departure: reader To the editor: Re: ‘Cloverdale working on Target closure transition,’ News, Jan. 22 I would prefer to see the store divided up into some smaller boutiques.

There are no big box stores that will be interested in moving into a large store such as the size of the Target store.

I hear a lot of people say they miss not having a proper restaurant there. We would like to actually be

able to have a sit-down dinner. Every place at the mall seems to be snack food only. Plus you had to sit where everyone else could see you eating as they passed by. I like some privacy when I eat.

We miss Zellers in many ways but one of them was the restaurant.

They served very nice dinners there and the mall has not replaced that facility.

The mall would do well with a restaurant. The one Zellers had was

busy most of the time.

I was not all that happy with Target at Cloverdale and many of my friends weren’t either.

They did not sell yarn for knitting and crocheting and none of the rest that goes with it. I was happier with Zellers.

SOAAR continues learning for young adults with developmental disabilities

Day program provides social outings, goal-directed teachings CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke is now home to a new day program for young adults with autism – offering a mix of community engagement-minded outings and independence-building life skills learning.

Launched just last month

by Behaviour Innovations at its longtime site on The Queensway, Successful Options for Adults with Autism Re-envisioned (SOAAR) is an alternative program for young adults with autism, developmental disabilities and other neurological disorders, said Behaviour Innovations Director Dr. Nicole WaltonAllen.

“We have been serving children since 1998, when the Behaviour Institute (now Behaviour Innovations) first opened to provide intensive behavioural intervention to kids with autism and other neurological disorders. But many of those kids are now 18-plus, they’re out of high school and their families are now saying ‘what’s next for my kid?’” said Walton-Allen, a psychologist and certified behaviour analyst.

“You have a person who is now a young adult, with no place to go and no job skills, so families are having a really hard time.”

And that’s where SOAAR comes in.

Rather than keeping its participants cooped up inside, SOAAR encourages its young charges to go out and explore their community through twice-daily supervised outings – from activitybased trips to go swimming, trampolining, bowling and skating, to trips to the grocery store and local coffee shop, for example. “ We’re definitely not aggregating everybody in some large building where they hang out and do puzzles over and over again.

“Our mission is basically to provide community

integration – opportunities to develop social skills and opportunities to develop leisure skills in small mobile units, which we call pods,” Walton-Allen said, noting that SOAAR’s client-to-staff ratio is 5:1.

“With those pods, they go out twice a day, every day a week – and that’s very important to us.”

In its first few weeks running out of Etobicoke, SOAAR has seen its participants venture from High Park to skate and Sherway Gardens to shop, to a local bowling alley to throw some strikes and a garden centre to get a sneak peek at spring’s offerings.

They’ve also become regulars at the local Tim Hortons,

where each of the participants is encouraged to order their own food and drinks (and where one non-verbal participant has mastered the art of ordering using his iPad), and at the nearby No Frills, where they walk to buy their weekly snack supplies.

Not only do such outings help SOAAR’s participants improve upon their functional social skills, but it also helps foster in them and in all those they meet a better sense of their belonging in the community, Walton-Allen said.

“It’s a way for us to continue to provide a relatively novel way to approach this phase in our participants’ lives – to show them their world isn’t shrinking just because school is over; that we want them to be part of the community,” she said, noting she’s also seen a change in the reception to SOAAR’s participants in the community the more they get out and engage.

“Our neighbours get to know us when they see us

walking around the neighbourhood, whether if be to the park, up the street or to the grocery store or the coffee shop. People become more receptive the more they understand.”

While half the SOAAR day is spent out in the community, the other half, Walton-Allen said, is spent back at 618 The Queensway working on goal-directed teaching periods, such as conversational training, instructional sessions on how to use an iPad to communicate and how to prepare a meal.

“Learning doesn’t stop just because high school is over,” she said, noting all SOAAR staff are trained in Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA).

“Families were discouraged by the thought that there is nothing more that their child can be involved with that will influence their development after they leave high school, so what we do is focus on is functional teaching related to appropriate conversation, appropriate social skills and basic life skills development...

SOAAR is a program that really develops things like co-operation, waiting, communication – all the things a family needs when at home with these guys.”

While SOAAR runs five days a week, Walton-Allen said part-time opportunities are available to those families for whom the cost of the program might prove prohibitive.

The cost ranges from $80 to $100 a day.

“We’re flexible in terms of the number of days a participant is able to attend. The sad part is, that is often based on family’s ability to pay, because really there’s no funding out there for families in this situation, unless you get Passport funding,” she said, referring to Developmental Services Ontario’s funding program for community participation and caregiver respite supports.

Elderly man found in laneway dies of injuries CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Police continue to investigate the “suspicious” death of an 82-year-old man found bloodied and semiconscious in an Etobicoke laneway early on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 5.

Const. Victor Kwong said police received a call from a passerby who found the

man lying on the ground in a laneway south of Bloor Street West and west of Prince Edward Drive at around at 6:46 a.m.

When police arrived, paramedics were already on the scene, Kwong added, noting that the man appeared to have been drinking.

Kwong said while the man was still breathing on scene, police received a follow-up

call from paramedics at 7:22 a.m. informing them that the man became vital signs absent sometime either en route to or upon arrival at the hospital.

Toronto EMS spokesperson K im McK innon confirmed that the patient was taken to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.

The man was later pro-

nounced dead, police have now confirmed.

While officers continue to investigate, Kwong said foul play has been ruled out.

“It does not appear to be foul play, but it’s suspicious because we have a man who has been found in a laneway,” Kwong said.

The investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death continues.

ometimes a single photo can speak to several different aspects of history, as this one does.

Initially, we can’t help but be charmed by the blonde, curly haired boy driving his wagon down Third Street in New Toronto. His name is John Baycroft, and he’s in front of the driveway to his own house at Number 117.

John is the third of the four children of Gordon and Doreen Baycroft, and grandson to William and Edith Baycroft. William left his furniture and undertaking business in Beeton, Ont. in 1921 and established W.E. Baycroft and Sons Funeral Home in a large house on the northeast corner of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Fourteenth Street. In 1947, he sold the business to Art Ridley and it became Ridley’s Funeral Home, which still operates on that site today.

Gordon Baycroft’s two brothers entered the funeral business with their father, but Gordon joined

denise harris history corner the Royal Bank instead. In 1924, he took a position with Reginald N. Boxer Wallpaper Manufacturers on Eight Street where he worked for 42 years.

Like his father before him, Gordon was elected to the New Toronto School Board for two years, and then in 1948, was elected councillor, a position he held every year but one until 1964. In 1951, he designed and built a new house for his family at Number 9 on a new street he had helped name, Maple Boulevard, just a block east of the site where John is riding his wagon.

Behind John in this picture is the large factory of Campbell Soup at 60 Birmingham St. The Joseph Campbell Preserve Company was founded in Camden, New Jersey in 1876. The invention of condensed soup in 1897 revolutionized Campbell’s business as people now had a

new way to easily and quickly feed their families.

Campbell’s Soup came to Canada in 1930, buying a lot at the north end of Third Street for its first Canadian location. Architects Mathers and Holdenby designed a distinctive Art Deco building that opened in 1931 with 150 employees.

Vegetable soup was the first variety produced, and today 70 per cent of the vegetables they use are still grown within a three hour drive of this plant. By 1963, Campbell’s had expanded to meet market demand and employed 1,650 people. Today, Campbell’s is the last of the original large employers in New Toronto to survive, and its 1,300 employees supply products all across Canada.

Since Vandyk bought the 55-year-old Berry Road plaza back in August 2013, the 5.3-acre site has already undergone much change – demolition work begun last March saw all buildings save the one occupied by Stonegate CHC knocked down in order to accommodate remediation work required to clean up the site, said Gerard Caverson, VP of Finance for the Vandyk Group of Companies.

That environmental cleanup, deemed necessary by soil contamination traced back to chemicals used by a long-closed dry cleaning business that used to operate out of the plaza, is now 90 per cent complete, he reported.

Meanwhile on Jan. 13, Etobicoke York Community Council considered Vandyk’s rezoning application for the site, which detailed its plans for a phased, mixed-use development on the lands.

If ultimately approved, the first phase of the redevelopment will consist of a twostorey commercial building containing a grocery store (at ground floor) and relocated Stonegate Community Health Centre (on the second storey), located at the southwest corner of the site.

Mark DeSouza, Vandyk’s VP of Land Development, said construction of that first phase could “optimistically” begin as early as late fall 2015/ early spring 2016.

At the community meeting, an informal poll took place where three issues emerged as the community’s top concerns.

AFFORDABLE FOOD In terms of access to affordable food, Caverson said Vandyk has yet to secure a grocer to occupy the ground floor of the proposed development’s commercial building, but remains committed to finding one. “...We have spoken with a number of grocery chains – Loblaws has decided it’s not an ideal location for them, and while Sobey’s was initially very interested, they have

decided that it doesn’t fit their requirements, either.”

In the meantime, Stonegate CHC Executive Director Bev Leaver said she and her team continue to run food programs to help “fill the gap” left by the demolition of the plaza’s ValuMart.

In addition to forming a partnership with Etobicoke Services for Seniors (ESS) to run weekly No Frills shuttle buses for seniors and people with mobility issues, Stonegate CHC is also exploring a potential partnership with FoodShare to bring a mobile market to the community. Stonegate CHC also runs a farmers’ market in the summer, and acts as a drop-off site for FoodShare’s Good Food Box program yearround, Leaver added.

MEETING SPACES In terms of residents’ concerns over whether or not the Vandyk redevelopment will offer community space where locals can socialize, Caverson said the developer’s plans include ample green space that will be open to all – including benches and seating areas where people can gather.

“The green space within the development is for the benefit of the entire community,” he said.

In addition to that outdoor space, Leaver said when Stonegate CHC’s new 15,000-square-foot space opens, it will be nearly double

the size of the centre’s current digs – meaning much more programming space for the community to take advantage of.

“I’m hoping those program rooms will be used by the community night and day and weekends,” she said. “It will be space that people can organize to gather, and where we can host lots of drop-in programs.”

RECREATIONAL FACILITIES While some residents at Tuesday’s meeting decried the loss of Stonegate Plaza’s makeshift basketball court, Mary Campbell, constituency assistant to EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Justin Di Ciano, said the councillor’s office is currently looking into more appealing alternatives for local youth.

“Councillor Di Ciano has asked city staff to report back on King’s Mill Park, and any possibilities there might be to connect this development to the park,” she said, noting that such plans are complicated by the fact that a portion of the park is located in a flood plain, while other parts are protected by heritage status.

“So, we’re still waiting to hear back about what possibilities are – how much land would be available for anything – to see if we can put in a soccer pitch or something else.”

John Fenton, 82, to walk 10 kilometres in Coldest Night fundraiser Senior has been helping Yonge Street Mission for 71 years despite health problems JUSTIN SKINNER

Considering his condition a short while ago, the fact 82-year-old John Fenton is set to brave the elements to walk 10 kilometres for charity is nothing short of amazing.

Fenton had myriad health problems, which led to him becoming less and less active, which only worsened his condition.

“It’s been quite an amazing turnaround,” he said.

“I had a lot of spinal trouble resulting in me hardly walking at all – I could walk a block, but it was difficult and painful. Diabetes also did damage to the nerves in my legs, so I was unstable.”

That all changed when he happened to meet a woman who walked with the use of walking poles.

He spoke briefly of the benefits the poles offered her and then met up with urban police certified instructor

Jacqueline Murdoch to learn their proper use.

“I’ve walked three to eight kilometres almost every day since,” he said. “At the age of 82, you start to break down a bit naturally, but it’s a huge change from where I had been.”

The poles helped give Fenton added balance and stability, and the security they provided helped boost his confidence as he got his legs back into walking shape.

Fenton will participate in the upcoming Coldest Night of the Year walk, a fundraising walk to raise money for those living in poverty or on the streets across Canada.

He and his team, the Nordic Kids, will walk to raise funds for the Yonge Street Mission.

Fenton’s affiliation with the downtown agency dates back 71 years, to when he accompanied his father, then Etobicoke’s medical officer of health, to the mission.

“It was a small building in what looked like a church on Yonge Street,” he said.

“I remember that the

people that came in to the building almost frightened me because I had never seen poverty like that.”

He vowed then to do what he could to help out, giving what he could when he could and serving two stints on the mission’s board of directors.

More than seven decades later, he continues to make good on his vow.

“They do such good work there, I’m happy to do whatever I can to help them,” said the Etobicoke resident.

He said the 10-kilometre walk will be a challenge, but it would have been unthinkable as recently as a year ago.

“I figured I’d try to take on 10 kilometres and try to raise $10,000,” he said.

The Coldest Night of the

Year walk will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

Participants walking in support of the Yonge Street Mission will begin at Ryerson University’s Kerr Hall West Auditorium, 379 Victoria St. WALK FOR HAVEN Haven on The Queensway is encouraging residents to bundle up to fundraise with them on Feb. 22.

The Etobicoke walk begins and ends at Church on The Queensway, 1536 The Queensway. Registration is at 4 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. Between 6 and 9 p.m. a warm, light meal will be served to all walkers and volunteers. Go online to find out how to sign up.

Snacks that promote better sleep According to the National Sleep Foundation, changes in sleep patterns are a part of the aging process. Many people experience difficulty falling asleep and then staying asleep as they age, and that difficulty can make men and women over 50 feel more tired during the day.

But even though difficulty sleeping may be a part of aging, that does not mean men and women over 50 cannot take steps to improve their sleeping patterns. For example, certain snack foods may help to improve quality of sleep, especially when these foods replace less healthy snacking options. While men and women over 50 should always consult with their physicians before making any changes to their diets, the following are a handful of snack foods that promote better sleep.

• Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough

to make falling and staying asleep easier.

• Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

• Cheese and crackers: One more traditional snack may just help you get a better night’s sleep. Cheese and crackers contain tryptophan and carbohydrates, which can induce a better night’s sleep and help you fall asleep sooner.

• Cherries: Cherries contain the sleep hormone melatonin, and recent studies indicated that participants who drank tart cherry juice on a daily basis fell asleep more quickly and slept longer and better than participants who did not

drink cherry juice.

• Hummus: The primary ingredient in hummus is chickpeas, which are loaded with tryptophan, folate and vitamin B6.

Folate has proven especially beneficial to older men and women who need help regulating their sleep patterns, while vitamin B6 helps the body regulate its clock.

• Peanut butter: Peanut butter is another snacking item loaded with tryptophan. Spread some peanut butter on a carbohydrate, whether it’s a slice of toast or some crackers, before going to bed, and you may enjoy a better, longer sleep.

• Walnuts: Like cherries, walnuts contain melatonin, which can contribute to a longer, more restful night’s sleep. Walnuts also can help regulate stress, which is a leading cause of sleeping difficulty.

Catholic school board launches inquiry into shooting deaths near Don Bosco Toronto’s Catholic school board today launched a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting deaths of two of its students near Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School last fall.

Zaid Athir Youssef, a 17-year-old Don Bosco student, and 15-year-old Michael Menjivar, a student at James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School, both died of their injuries following a midday shooting near the Islington Avenue and Dixon Road area high school just after 12:30 p.m. Oct. 6.

The main goal of the independent inquiry into their deaths is to “hear from those who were directly impacted by this very serious and tragic incident,” said former Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) supt. Paul Crawford, who has been named chair

of the independent inquiry panel.

Other panel members include: Ward 4 Trustee Patrizia Bottoni; Rachel Ferreira, a probation officer with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and vicepresident of the Committee of Youth Officers for the Province of Ontario (COYO);

Jana Seymour, vice-president of the Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education (OAPCE); and John Yan, senior coordinator of the TCDSB’s communications, public and media relations.

The panel has now been tasked with considering input from TCDSB staff, students, community members and

public service agencies as to what additional policies and procedures may be helpful in preventing, as well as responding to, similar situations in the future.

“If we can come up with additional intervention strategies and insights that assist with further support of vulnerable youth in our community, that will be one big positive outcome for all of us,” Crawford said in a statement.

To those ends, the inquiry panel has scheduled the following three upcoming public meetings to seek input from the community: n Tuesday Feb. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Catholic Education Centre boardroom, 80 Sheppard Ave. E. n Wednesday, March 4 from 6:30 to 9 at St. Andrew Catholic School, 2533 Kipling Ave.

n Wednesday, March 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Senator O’Connor Secondary School, 60 Rowena Dr. After seeking input from both TCDSB and non-TCDSB groups, as well as the general public, the panel will then review the feedback and provide recommendations related to TCDSB’s safe school policies and procedures.

“Our ultimate goal is to ensure that we are doing everything possible in the area of student safety and well-being,” TCDSB Director of Education Angela Gauthier said in a statement.

The Inquiry Panel has been mandated to prepare a report with recommendations to the TCDSB board of trustees

by April.

Toronto Police Service Marine Unit and Toronto Water have advised ice on open water and on storm water management ponds in Toronto is unstable and unsafe.

Time travel along the waterfront with PortsToronto photo exhibit PortsToronto will present a photo exhibit featuring historical images of Toronto’s waterfront and South Core at the Allen Lambert Galleria in Brookfield Place, 181 Bay Street, now until Feb. 20.

The exhibit, titled Making Connections to Toronto’s Waterfront – A Historical Retrospective, was curated from the extensive yet rarely viewed PortsToronto archive.

The images presented will take visitors on a journey through time by depicting the evolution of Toronto’s

waterfront, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the Port of Toronto and Harbour and other key areas that have played a significant role in the development of the city as a commercial and cultural hub of Canada.

Transit riders forced off Scarborough RT, onto buses after power loss Scores of Scarborough RT riders were forced to switch to emergency shuttle buses over the weekend following an extended outage on the aged transit line.

The TTC blamed “electrical power loss” for the hours-long shutdown of the entire line from Kennedy to McCowan RT stations which lasted much of Saturday, Feb. 7.

This year should have marked the opening of the Scarborough LRT, which would have replaced the RT. But with plans switched to building a subway extension it won’t be until at least 2023 – assuming city council d o e s n’t m e d d l e w i t h the plan again – when Scarborough residents finally have a new transit option.

Mayor John Tory got a rough ride from transit workers this week demanding he take a position on the possible contracting out of TTC union jobs.

The mayor was greeted with chants of “keep transit public” from workers at the TTC’s Hillcrest maintenance facility when he toured the site Monday, Feb. 9.

At issue is an agreement signed with the province which gives the TTC the right to operate the new planned lines including the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, but leaves design and maintenance responsibilities to the provincial government.

Tory said he understood the workers’ frustration but admitted it’s up to the province, which has committed full funding for the new lines, if it wants to contract out

BLOCKS BIKE SHARE STATION w SNOW

For days, a big pile of snow has blocked off access to a Bike Share Toronto station.

TTC board member Alan Heisey first tweeted a photo of the snow-covered station on Thursday, Feb. 5 located at the northeast corner of King Street and University Avenue which looked like it was covering at least half of the available bicycle docks which members of the bike share use to pick up or drop off their rented rides.

Heisey then tweeted another picture Feb. 9 showing the snow had still not been removed from the station.

Local city councillor Pam McConnell later confirmed through Twitter the snow was left at the station by a private contractor.

Spadina Station will soon have access to subway Wi-Fi, the TTC announced last week.

Museum and St. Patrick were the latest stops connected to the list of stations already offering the TCONNECT wireless network which riders can access for free from their smartphones. Spadina is scheduled to go online next month and Queen’s Park Station after that.

Last year, service provider BAI Canada pledged to have the entire downtown subway loop completed in time for the start of the 2015 Pan Am/Para Pan Am Games.

What do the Toronto Marlies and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey teams have in common?

The answer: a Brown brother atop its teams’ scoring.

The brothers are from Mimico, both former students of Michael Power/St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary.

Older brother Jeff, 24, led U of T in scoring for the just completed regular season with 31 points (13 goals and 18 assists) in 27 games.

And younger brother Connor, 21, although in his rookie year in the American Hockey League, is leading the Toronto Marlies in scoring with 34 points (12 goals and 22 assists) in 46 games, heading into this weekend’s games Friday night in Hamilton and Sunday afternoon in Binghamton.

Jeff and his U of T team, meanwhile, start the playoffs this week with a bestof-three series against downtown arch rival Ryerson University.

The 36-team event saw the Cardinals take the championship match in two straight sets (25-21, 25-17) over Ottawa’s École Secondaire Catholique FrancoCité. In the semifinals they also won in straight sets over St. Mary’s from Hamilton (25-15, 25-16).
