Donations help ensure people have food throughout the winter months AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Lisa McMillan would have never imagined she would have to rely on a food bank for support. "I’m a very proud woman," she told Metroland Media Toronto. "It’s hard to admit when you need help." McMillan, 56, was working at a restaurant as a sever last year when she lost her job. "I thought it would be no problem to find another job, and I had over $2,000 in savings," she said. "Once my money got drained, I had to go to welfare, which was a big deal." Depression hit her, and with her luck running out, she turned to the Daily Bread Food Bank for help a decision that changed her. "It brought me out of my skin," she said. "It brought me back to the person that I was." When McMillan began using the food bank, it had just finished its Holiday Drive campaign. The money and food raised from the drive helps Daily Bread provide food for close to 200 food programs and clients across the city throughout the winter. This year’s drive started on Nov. 23, and ends on Dec. 31. Gail Nyberg, executive director of the food bank, said they are aiming to

As of Monday, Dec. 19, the food bank has raised close to $570,000, and 200,000 pounds of food. "Are we on track? Yes," she said. "Do we have a long way to go? Yes." Nyberg added the Holiday Food Drive is important to the organization because they don’t receive as many donations in the following months. "It certainly drops off, that’s why the goal during both Thanksgiving and Christmas is so high, because it’s not just about the Christmas season or the Thanksgiving season, it’s about making sure there’s enough on the shelves to
feed people throughout the winter," she said. McMillan, who now volunteers at Daily Bread, is encouraging people to donate to the Holiday Drive, and to continue to do so after it ends. "It’s very hard as a client-volunteer to say no to somebody when you know they need food," she added. Looking forward, being a client at the food bank has helped McMillan get back on the right track. In January, McMillan is hoping to start her new job as a server at a restaurant. Nyberg has seen many people like McMillan come through the food bank, and is proud they have been able to help.
"A lot of the people who come to food banks sometimes are a little bit nervous and they wonder what it’s like, but when they come and they get a hamper of food and it’s good
stuff, they’re very grateful," she said. "The majority of them, after using food banks for a few months, or a year, are able to get themselves re-established and we’re here for the next per-
son who had that one thing change in their lives." Food donations can be dropped off at any local fire hall, and financial donations can be made online at www.dailybread.ca.

Don’t ruin your life, or the lives of others, by driving drunk The holidays are a time of year for family gatherings, evenings out with friends and reminiscing about the year that was, and looking ahead to what might come. With every story shared of dreams fulfilled, or those that remained just out of reach, alcohol may be a regular companion at the table. Catching up over a bottle of wine isn’t uncommon during the holidays, but what shouldn’t become common is getting behind the wheel after an evening of drinking - now, or at any time of year. MADD Canada reports that accidents involving alcohol and/or drugs are the leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Its website reports that in 2012, there were 2,546 crash deaths. Of those, 1,497 involved drivers who had some alcohol or drug presence in their system. That works out to almost 60 per cent of people who knowingly turned the key in the ignition after consuming alcohol or drugs. But that doesn’t have to be the case. There is enough education and awareness about the dangers of drunk or drugged driving that there’s no excuse to get behind the wheel impaired. The human cost is staggering; innocent people’s lives changed in an instant, without their consent. The financial cost to all parties involved can be catastrophic; draining their savings and in some cases, losing their homes because of court costs or stacking medical bills. The Toronto Police Service, along with 16 other police services across the province, launched its annual holiday R.I.D.E. campaign last month. Toronto police are out every night until after the new year holding spot checks at various locations across the city – working to keep you safe. But drivers have a responsibility. Pay for the long cab ride, take Uber, arrange for a designated driver or call someone you trust to pick you up. Making arrangements to enjoy yourself, but not taking the unnecessary risk of getting in the driver’s seat impaired, is the best gift you can give yourself this holiday season. If you’re heading out to celebrate the start of 2017, Corby Spirit and Wine is partnering with the TTC to offer complimentary rides home for revelers. There are options everywhere. No good time is worth driving impaired.

Industrial buildings tempt the faithful, despite city crackdown Toronto is a place of religious freedom, but isn’t a friendly place for religious groups which lack a lot of patience and money. If you want to start a church, mosque, or temple, and you don’t want to rent space in another religious institution, your options are limited. Building a place of worship takes plenty of time and cash. If you don’t have that, you’re more likely to do something foolish, such as moving into an old warehouse or factory. On a stretch of Birchmount Road in Scarborough, the city shut down a Hindu temple last month. The Canada Kanthaswamy Temple Society held services in a warehouse for years, temporarily, while its home on the same street

ship and schools - but the city also acted because they were in an employment area it wants to save. Michael Thompson, chairperson of Toronto’s Economic Development Committee, says the city is not picking on any religious groups, but Sakinah and Canada Kanthaswamy both ignored the city’s warnings about improper zoning. "A lot of folks are just not wanting to follow the rules." Part of the problem is this industrial part of Birchmount is already dotted with places of worship and private schools, as are many employment zones across the city. Seeking to stop a trend, the city clamped down in 2013 with a new bylaw,
though it seems it sometimes takes inspectors years to find and act against new places of worship existing where they shouldn’t. To leaders of religious institutions struggling to find an affordable building - and who perhaps received bad advice - this must look awfully unfair, and empty industrial real estate awfully tempting. But what about those believers who scraped together the donations, the money for lessons? Where can they go now? Longtime park user decries police heavy handedness Re: Lewd behaviour at Etobicoke’s Marie Curtis Park no longer tolerated, say police (Cynthia Reason, Etobicoke Guardian, November 17, 2016) As a longtime resident of the Long Branch community, I have been a regular user of Marie Curtis Park for 25 years, picnicking, jogging and cycling freely through all areas of the 100 acres with friends and family. I also routinely walk my dog through the "semi-feral" wooded areas located on the western side of the Park, well away from the playground and splash pad on the eastern side across the Etobicoke Creek. Never have I witnessed any "lewd behaviour", only others companionably walking through the trails. I am dismayed at the ag-

Hats off to MPP Cheri DiNovo (Parkdale-High Park) and Toronto City Councillor Kristyn WongTam (Ward 27) for taking a stance against this victimizing members of an already (still frequently) stigmatized community. To the editor: Re: Trimming Toronto’s holiday tree is an epic undertaking (by David Nickle, Dec. 1) I was very disappointed in this story in the Etobicoke Guardian. I couldn’t believe that you referred to the Toronto downtown Christmas Tree as a holiday tree. This matter was put to rest a few years back and it was deemed that now and forever it would be a Christmas tree. Why on earth would you want to resurrect this topic. I know
we live in a multicultural society but surely we can keep some of our Christmas traditions. I don’t believe this offends anyone except the politically correct. If we are to be tolerant of other beliefs then others must be tolerant of ours. Please don’t try to take Christmas away from us. TEA urges Torontonians to buy less, reuse more Local junk removal companies recycle or donate 60 per cent of items they pick up DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com With the holiday shopping season in full swing, the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) is urging residents to consider if they truly need something before purchasing it. "We’re probably buying too much stuff. We’re probably making too many things and consuming too many things," TEA’s waste campaigner, Emily Alfred, said. "It’s hard, especially with the holidays coming up. People don’t want to hear that. But, think a little bit before you buy things," she added. "Buy less, buy things that are more durable and are going to last longer, and know that when you’re done with it, you can give it away." In 2013 alone, the City of Toronto managed nearly one million tonnes of waste (garbage, recycling and compost) - quantities the city says are not sustainable. And even then, Alfred said that number only covers residential waste, while businesses produce as much as 60 per cent of all waste. While the strain on landfills is great, the environmental impact is worse when you consider how much energy goes into making a product. Creating products requires water, natural resources and electricity - not to mention the resources it takes to ship those products across the world, or the energy used to power the stores where those products are
sold. "We have a finite amount of resources on the planet. If we take them and make them into something and just waste that thing and throw it to landfill or just burn it up, all the resources that are in that should be reused," Alfred said. "We should be recycling things, we should be buying less, we should be reusing things." While Toronto has a 53 per cent diversion rate, a recent waste audit revealed that 85 per cent of waste that comes out of homes is either recyclable or compostable. The city has since passed a long term waste strategy, which aims to improve diversion rates and teach people to cut down on food waste, to recycle more, and to reuse things. "If everybody recycled, composted or reused everything they could, we’d have a really small amount of waste," Alfred added. To those ends, TEA suggests that before throwing items away, people should seek out others who may find those objects useful. As an example, Alfred urged those looking to get rid of used furniture to think about donating items that are still in good order to local organizations such as Furniture Bank, rather than simply putting them out on the curb on garbage day. The Etobicoke-based charitable organization has provided free gentlyused furniture to more than 105,000 people in need including women and children escaping abuse, those moving beyond homeless-

With the holidays fast approaching and the demand for its services on the rise, Furniture Bank is looking for support from the community, to ensure that it can continue to fulfil its mission to help its clients gain a sense of "dignity, stability, and security" by furnishing their homes. "Traditionally over the years, December is one of our slowest months in terms of collecting furniture, while the demand on the client side is so high and it’s only getting higher with housing rates and the
cost of living here in Toronto going up," said Noah Kravitz, Furniture Bank’s community engagement manager. "We’re currently at a point where our demand on the client side is so much higher than the furniture we’re collecting from the community. So, at this point, we’re looking to collect as much ’gently-loved’ furniture as we can." Two local companies are trying to help organizations like Furniture Bank out, while at the same time diverting as many reusable items from the landfill as possible. Self-described "green
junkies," 1-800-RID-OF-IT is a Bloor West-based rubbish removal company that recycles or donates 60 per cent of the items it picks up. President Rick Crawford said the holidays often lead to a surge in the demand for 1-800-RID-OF-ITs services. "Certainly after the holidays, people say ’Woah, we got all this new stuff, now we have to get rid of the old stuff,’ so they call us," he said. "Most of the 60 per cent (we divert) is made up of recycling ... but we do try to donate as much furniture and household items as we can." Furniture Bank, the Sal-

2016 was a cruel year for everyone - including City Hall I don’t know how your social media feed has been coping with the nearly-finished 2016 - but mine has been cursing the year, with every death and setback: David Bowie, Prince, Mohamed Ali, Canada’s own Alan Thicke . While one might gently point that death comes for some of us every year, it’s hard not to see that in 2016, the reaper cast an unusually long shadow, at least against the glare of public light. Toronto was not spared. In March, former Mayor and City Councillor Rob Ford succumbed to the cancer he had been battling since 2014. Arguably the most famous politician that Toronto has ever produced, and also one of the most divisive, Ford’s passing - and the opulent public viewing and funeral - was impossible for any Toron-
DAVID NICKLE The City tonian, grieving or otherwise, to ignore. And when it was done, Toronto finished the first year in a long time that was not defined by its relationship with Ford and his particular, and very powerful, kind of populism. The late former mayor’s nephew Michael Ford moved into his city council seat in Ward 2 (Etobicoke North). But the sharp, populist critique from a former mayor who had promised to run again and might well have
won if he had . that was gone. Its absence seems to have made at least some difference. Just last week, Mayor John Tory and Toronto Council moved forward with only minimal fuss, to look at a revenue tool that would have turned into a Ford-fed bonfire a year earlier: road tolls, on the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway. This fall, council supported looking at a billion-dollar-plus rail deck park. There are bike lanes - bike lanes! - on Bloor Street. Some of these things may well have come forward with Rob Ford sitting on council. As it stands, while 2016 was a cruel year for too many – for Toronto’s political leadership, at least for a time, it was uniquely unconstrained.

New program provides emergency Boxing Week Sale mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners
like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. Local program delivers Holiday spirit to Etobicoke seniors Be a Santa to a Senior initiative collects 250 gifts The holidays are a time to celebrate the joy and warmth of the season with friends and family. In Etobicoke, the local Home Instead Senior Care office invited the community to celebrate with local seniors who may be alone during the holiday season. The Home Instead Senior Care office serving Etobicoke helped to facilitate Be a Santa to a Senior, a community program that provides gifts and companionship to seniors who may be isolated from friends or family during the holiday season. The program was made possible through the generous support of Etobicoke businesses, nonprofit organizations, retailers, numerous volunteers and members of the community. This year, the initiative collected approximately 250 gifts for seniors in the Etobicoke community. "The holidays can be a troubling time for seniors. They may feel the absence or the distance of loved ones," said Brenda Enright of the Etobicoke Home Instead Senior Care office. "Be a Santa to a Senior provides a ray of hope for many seniors, and it means so much for them to know that people care and value

Participating locations displayed Be a Santa to a Senior trees that were hung with ornaments featuring seniors’ first names and their desired gifts. Holiday shoppers were able to choose an ornament, buy the requested gift and return it back to the store with the ornament attached. Then on December 13, Home Instead Senior Care, in partnership with Tapestry Retirement Residence, gathered caregivers, volunteers, and other members of the community together to wrap the gifts collected and prepare them for delivery to the intended seniors. "Be a Santa to a Senior provides a much-needed boost for seniors who may be isolated, not just

NOTICE OF TRANSPORTATION ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY REPORT ADDENDUM Bridgeland Avenue / Dufferin Street / Yorkdale Road Intersection Improvements Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study - G.W.P. 2131-12-00 THE PROJECT In compliance with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (“MTO”) Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000) (“Class EA”), a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) was previously prepared for a larger study referred to as the Rehabilitation of the Highway 401 Eastbound Collector Lanes from Jane Street to East of Avenue Road (G.W.P. 2131-01-00) and was filed in the Public Record in February 2013 and cleared in April 2013.

Since that time, MTO has reviewed the proposed Bridgeland Avenue / Dufferin Street / Yorkdale Road Intersection Improvements which formed part of the TESR (February 2013), and has determined that the works can follow the approved planning process for a Group ‘C’ project under the MTO Class EA as the works are considered ‘minor improvements to an existing provincial transportation facility’. The improvements are proposed to take place within the MTO’s Right-Of-Way (ROW).

INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS The new intersection improvements include: • Realignment of Yorkdale Road and Bridgeland Avenue to the north including a new signalized intersection with Dufferin Street. • Realignment of the Highway 401 eastbound off-ramp to Yorkdale Road to the north and a new two span bridge over Dufferin Street. The new bridge will have a slightly wider cross-section. • New traffic signals at the Highway 401 eastbound off-ramp terminal with Yorkdale Road. • Reconstruction of the existing pavement on Dufferin Street within the MTO’s ROW. The project limits are located within the City of Toronto. Refer to the Study Area map. THE PROCESS This study was initiated as a Group ‘B’ project under the MTO Class EA; however, MTO has reviewed this work and is proposing by way of this Addendum to re-classify the Bridgeland Avenue / Dufferin Street / Yorkdale Road Intersection Improvements as a Group ‘C’ project under the MTO’s Class EA. The TESR (February 2013) included the original proposed concept design for this intersection. This Addendum Notice provides information on the Group ‘C’ process to be followed. As a Group ‘C’ project, an Environmental Screening Document (ESD) will be prepared to document the study process, design details, consultation undertaken during the study, and potential environmental issues and mitigation measures. The ESD will not be made available for public review and comment, but can be made available to interested persons upon request. This Addendum Notice is available for a minimum 30-day review period commencing December 20, 2016 and ending January 27, 2017. COMMENTS This notification marks the beginning of the 30-day review period in which potentially interested persons may request MTO to reconsider the decision to re-classify the project as a Group ‘C’ project. Interested persons are encouraged to review this Addendum Notice and provide written comments to the MTO during the 30-day review period (ending January 27, 2017). If after consulting with MTO and Consultant staff, you still have serious unresolved concerns, you have the right to request the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) (in writing to 77 Wellesley Street West, 11th Floor, Ferguson Block, Toronto, Ontario, M7A 2T5) to rule on your request to reconsider re-classifying the project. It is the responsibility of the objector to forward the request to the MOECC before the end of the 30-day review period. If there are no outstanding concerns at the end of the 30-day review period (ending January 27, 2017) the Bridgeland Avenue / Dufferin Street / Yorkdale Road Intersection Improvements project will proceed as a Group ‘C’ project under the MTO Class EA. In early childhood, she took private lessons in ballet and piano, dancing, acting and eventually completed art school. During her studies, she was fascinated by different styles of art and repeatedly participated in exhibitions. Polishuk lived in the Middle East for 15 years and her surroundings had an impact on her art. It was there she first began exhibiting in galleries and exhibition halls. In 1998 she formed a group where she and other artists exhibited their work in various cities. In 2003 she moved back to Kiev, where for three years she took courses in iconography. Erica Voss inducted CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke Ringette alum Erica Voss is set to be inducted into the Ringette Canada Hall of Fame alongside her gold medal-winning 2016 Canadian Junior National teammates. The 22-member team, and its support staff of 11 coaches and consultants, are being recognized for climbing the top of the podium at the 2016 World Ringette Championships in Helsinki, Finland last December. They will be joined in the Ringette Canada Hall of Fame by Sarah (Miller) Ianni of Toronto, who will be this year’s athlete inductee, and the late Dave Wood of Sherwood Park, Alberta, who will be inducted in the coach category. "Our sport is successful because of the hard work and dedication of many individuals across the country and this year’s Hall of

Voss’s Team Canada U21 then defeated Team Finland U20 in two straight games on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 the first by a score of 7-5 and the second in overtime by 10-9 - to win gold and the championship title. "To be on the ice as Team Canada with the anthem playing and all that - that’s the most exciting part for me," Voss told The Etobicoke Guardian last year in an interview shortly before departing for Helsinki to compete in the worlds - by far the largest competition of her ringette career to date.

Humber College soccer star named athlete of the month The Humber College Men’s soccer team had a record-breaking year, winning both the provincials and CCAA national championship. The Humber College men’s soccer team is the first program to finish a season with a perfect record of 16-0-0. Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame Athlete of the Month Karman Singh played a critical role in the team’s success recording shutouts in all tournament play. He thanked Humber College for giving him the chance to play, and his teammates and coaches for letting him be a part of this recordbreaking season. Karman was born in Etobicoke and started playing soccer at the young age of three and later joined the Toronto FC Academy before attending Humber College. He has decided to fulfill his dream and play soccer full-time and will be moving to Sweden in January where he signed a one-

Witnesses to city’s latest murder asked to come forward CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Police are appealing for witnesses with information about the shooting death of 26-year-old Faysal Mohamed Hees at his Etobicoke apartment on Sunday to come forward. Hees was found suffering "obvious signs of trauma" in his unit at 2067 Islington Ave. under suspicious circumstances on the morning of Monday, Dec. 19 and was pronounced dead on the scene, Homicide Det. Leslie Dunkley told media at a briefing at the building Wednesday morning. "What we believe is our deceased was involved in an altercation in his apartment late Sunday evening,

Faysal Mohamed Hees. and as a result of this argument, we believe that lead to his demise," Dunkley said, noting that Hees’ cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound. Dunkley said investigators believe there were other people present in Hees’ apartment unit at the time of his shooting and are appealing for those people to
contact police. In the meantime, he said officers have been canvassing the building and are currently reviewing video surveillance from the area. Police are also investigating whether or not Hees’ murder is connected to a stabbing call at the same apartment the day before, on Sunday, Dec. 18 at around 12:30 p.m., Dunkley said. Hees is Toronto’s 68th murder victim of 2016. No suspect description has yet been released. Baby Point Gates BIA Soup Festival raises money for Santa Fund To get into the holiday spirit, the Baby Point BIA hosted its inaugural Baby Its Cold Outside Charity Soup Festival, which raised $1,740 to help families with limited means give their children a special Christmas via the Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund. FOLEY, Robert William Leonard With his family by his side, Bob Foley passed away peacefully on December 13, 2016 at the age of 89. Bob was born in Long Branch and was a long-time resident of Alderwood. He will be remembered for his strong sense of responsibility and devotion to family. He was predeceased by his loving wife Irene (Bruder). He is survived by his children Elaine (Stew), Laura (Ned), Len (Patti), Dorothy, Annette (Judy). He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Chris, Jenny, Michelle, Shannon, Coby, Jason, Michael, Nikki, and Nigel, their spouses and his greatgrandchildren Julia, Jayden, Colton and Connor as well by his several nieces and nephews. As per Bob’s wishes there will be no service. A Celebration of Life is planned for the Spring of 2017. To honour Bob’s legacy of helping others, donations can be made to the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
