Changing the Narrative for Women's Empowerment Growing up, Shafali has felt the lack of role models for women who they can look up to and is determined to change the narrative with her leadership and vision. She aspires to inspire women, especially in the Asian communities, to pursue their dreams. Her successful entrepreneurship has already motivated several female members in the family and workplace.

Over half of Shafali's team comprises female employees and about 40% of her management team. She considers

them an untapped resource as a mum and consistently tries to increase their team numbers. Moreover, she believes in empowering employees, especially women, to reach their full potential.

While she understands the challenges of balancing work with family responsibilities, she is dedicated to helping the team achieve their dreams.

Being an established franchise owner and a recognised leader in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Shafali has had several encounters with gender bias. To tackle issues like this, Shafali and her sister Anisha has helped specifically set up a 'Women's

Franchising Forum', a platform to promote women and encourage them in workspace and franchising. Her message is clear: be brave, bold, and courageous without the pressure of perfection. Token of Wisdom for Aspirants While previously 'work-life' balance was non-existent in her leadership career, Shafali made adjustments over time and incorporated the concept strictly into her everyday routine. She manages a 24-hour business and tries not to look at her phone in the evenings, prioritizing family time. She drops her kids at school and spends evenings with them. While weekends are busy for her business, she likes to be in the restaurants and spend quality time with her children. She wants her kids to see her working hard, especially her daughter, who wants independence. Her son will learn to respect and understand women's work by witnessing his mom's efforts. Despite challenges, her family supports her, and her children are proud of her role as a McDonald's franchise owner.

As a seasoned leader, Shafali advises to be bold, brave, and chase your dreams because “you never know what you can achieve if you just take the first step,” and do what you enjoy as success will follow.

She personally finds fulfillment in her work, attributing her sense of success to her enjoyment. ustang is a Tibetan word that means, “Plain of aspiration”. The Mustang Valley is located north of Annapurna in Nepal and it is very close to the Tibetan plateau (China). It is divided into two parts that are “Upper Mustang” and “Lower Mustang” which was once the former kingdom. The Valley is an isolated and remote place in Nepal. Despite being a remote location, the Valley is visited by thousands of tourists yearly. Most of the people in Mustang live along the banks of the Kali Gandaki River.

Mustang Valley has been a part of Nepal since the 18th century but its location and its status as a ‘forbidden kingdom’ have protected it from the influences of the Western world. Before it became a part of Nepal, this region was part of the Lo Kingdom, so many historical sites are located in the valley.

In the early 1960s, the Khampa people joined with other local forces in the Mustang region and started fighting against the Chinese government. As a result, China requested the Nepali government to restrict the entry of any tourists to the Mustang region as it was a link to Tibet. In 1962, all tourists were banned from entering until 1992, when the doors were reopened to tourists.

To reach Mustang, tourists can take a flight to Pokhara from Kathmandu. From Pokhara, they can take a bus, or taxi, or rent a bike. It takes around 6-8 hours to reach Jomsom, which is the starting point of the Lo Kingdom in Upper Mustang via Prithvi Highway.

Arrival of a Muslim saint Legend has it that a Muslim saint, guided by a dream of the Prophet, traveled to Lakshadweep to spread Islam. Initially rejected, a girl fell in love with him, leading to conflict. The saint's prayers caused temporary blindness, and when he left, sight returned. Through miracles, he won people's trust, and Lakshadweep embraced Islam, blending Islamic and Hindu traditions. Today, his grave on Andrott Island remains sacred.

The Race between India and Pakistan In 1947, right after India gained independence, Pakistan eyed Lakshadweep despite the geographical distance. Sardar Patel, the Home Minister, swiftly acted.

The Mudaliyar brothers from Malabar, with a limited battalion and scarce weapons, hoisted the Indian flag on Lakshadweep on Patel's orders. Just in time, a ship with a Pakistani flag approached, creating a nail-biting situation!

First humans to set foot on Lakshadweep King Perumal of the Chera dynasty is believed to have converted to Islam and left for Mecca from his Malabar empire in the 7th century. Hindu sailors who were searching for him landed on Bangaram island after their ship was wrecked in a storm near Lakshadweep. When they returned to Malabar, they explored other Lakshadweep islands.

Later, a group from Malabar, including sailors and soldiers, settled permanently on Amini Island.
