the Ghana UK-Based Awards (GUBA) 2017 in London, the Havana Night by the Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF) Ghana, the 2nd Anniversary celebration of the European Business Organisation in Ghana (EBO Ghana) and the British Queen’s 91st Birthday celebration in Accra.

We bring you a pictorial reportage of each of those events, which we were invited to, especially the GUBA

Group Gives Back To Society Again

elcom Group of Companies, through its philanthropic arm, the Melcom Care Foundation, has seized the opportunity of the Mother’s Day observance to give back to society by way of donations.

The Group’s Communications Director, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, explained that the Group’s corporate social responsibility focused on children, education and health, where it supported institutions and individuals in need, within the framework of which the latest donations were made.

Four institutions who benefited from the kind gesture are: the Nsawam Prison, the Sekendi Female Prison, Ocean Broadcasting and Kokrokoo Charities.

Items presented to the two prison facilities included bags of rice, assorted drinks and biscuits, clothes, toiletries, and, in addition, sanitary pads for the Sekondi ladies.

Home appliances and cooking utensils were donated to Oceans TV (Oceans Broadcasting), while a home theatre went to Kokookro Charities, which, among other noble activities, provides incubators to save the lives of newly born babies.

Melcom Care Foundation also put a smile on the face of Mr Felix Kwakye, a student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s medical school, who received various items and a cheque towards his tuition. e

Children's Heart Foundation - Ghana Holds

"Havana Night"

I

t was Havana Night in Omanye Hall, Labadi Beach Hotel Accra on 27th May 2017 as Trustees of the Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF) Ghana treated their generous patrons, donors, sponsors, supporters and friends to a sumptuous fundraising dinner-dance in support of needy Ghanaian children who have to undergo heart surgeries.

The theme of the soirée, ‘Havana Night’, was elegantly carried, be it in the typical traditional Cuban dresses ladies put on, in the teardrop fedoras men wore, in the cigar-shaped chocolate sticks given out, or in the Salsa Cubana dance. El Comandante Fidel Castro himself turned up.

Or at least a living model, incarnated by Mr Dave Harper.

But the Havana Night was at the same time serious business, as they have dedicated themselves to doing it every year since 2008. The Trustees of 8 | June 2017 ENJOY No 120

pointed out in her touching address to the audience, their “success is built on the foundation of [the] generosity [of sponsors] and together [they] have provided the funds for open-heart surgery for over 158 children: saving lives one child at a time”. And in all humility, she added: “When we achieve, we do so because others have helped”.

One very emotional yet absolutely gratifying moment for sponsors was when 22-year old Ulrika, CHF’s very first beneficiary, whose surgery

Father's day is not blown loud like mother's day. A Father is a male parent who's biologically responsible for the conception and ultimate birth of a child.

After the biological connection between a child and a father take place,a father then has to become a dad. He Starts a life-long support for the child. Being a dad is what every child needs from his\her father, not a little emotional investment.

Bathing, dressing and playing with your child gets you closer to him\her. The daily connection, sacrifices as the man of the house, taking time to sit and have a talk with your child, understanding and thinking well before commenting,protection of the child not just a DNA match is what every child needs.

In most African homes,Children only see fathers not dads,the cause after their birth the only parent he\she knows is the Mother. When a child cries he or she screams "Mmaaa" in the Ghanaian Ashanti Twi dialect, meaning "Mother" Whilst we celebrat fathers day worldwide my wish that every Father becomes a Dad. WEBSTER UNIVERSITY GHANA CAMPUS HOLDS 3RD COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

ebster University (Ghana) Campus has held its 3rd commencement ceremony at the forecourt of the new campus location in East Legon, Accra.

The class of 2017, supported by their families, friends, faculty, alumni, and fellow students, obtained their Masters degrees in International Relations and Business Administration.

The spectacular ceremony was attended by dignitaries such as the Director of Tertiary Education in the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Eva Haizel; the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United States in Ghana, Melinda Tabler-Stone; Webster University’s Advisory Board members Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo and Judith Aidoo; as well as the Coordinator of Accreditation Committee Meetings at the National Accreditation Board Ms. Hagar Thompson.

Webster University is an American University based in St. Louis, Missouri with international campus locations in Switzerland, United Kingdom, Austria, the Netherlands, Thailand, China, Ghana and Greece. Webster students have the options of studying abroad and or transfer to any of the campuses within the Webster international network.

Blackberry KEYOne Hits the Market

Microsoft Launches new Surface Pro tablet

For all Blackberry fans, a long awaited dream has been fulfilled in the release of the Blackberry KEYOne, the latest handset under the TCL brand. TCL entered a licensing agreement with the maker of the original handsets, Reseach in Motion, covering the name and hardware patents, including the QWERTY keyboard.

The new device comes preloaded with Blackberry applications, Android apps like Google Chrome, Google Maps and Gmail. It can function on both LTE and CDMA networks and comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of flash memory. Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, WiFi and even FM radio are supported on the device.

The phone’s greatest strength is the inclusion of the physical backlit keyboard which brings familiarity to the fans of the older devices.

The 4.5-inch scratch resistant display, an 8-MP front camera with flash, a 12-MP autofocus large-pixel rear camera, a fingerprint scanner and Blackberry security software. At $550, it is cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S8.

After unveiling and starting the sale of the Surface laptop earlier in May, Microsoft has now unveiled its latest iteration of the Surface Pro tablets. The devices weigh 0.77kg and are 8.5mm thick with a 31cm screen, bluetooth and wifi connectivity.

The battery life has been boosted to 13.5 hours and the devices use Intel’s m3, i5 and i7 chips, making them about 2.5 times more powerful performance-wise than the older Surface Pro 3 and quieter because they are fanless.

Unfortunately the device doesn’t have any USB-C ports and 4G connectivity will not be available on the preordered devices. The base price is $799 for a model with the m3 processor, 4GB RAM and 128GB solid state hard drive. e

And it has kept its promise. Moreover, judging by the euphoria among the participants, one element was clear to me at the function: the GUBA Awards ceremony seemed like a special annual date between Ghanaians living in the UK ― and certainly in other parts of Europe and beyond ― and their compatriots back home.

T

he British High Commission in Accra celebrated Her Majesty’s the Queen’s 91st birthday at the High Commissioners Residence on 1ST June.

Distinguished attendee’s included His Excellency The President Nana Akufo- Addo, political figures, business executives and academics both Ghanaian and foreign.

The occasion also served as a celebratory farewell for His Excellency Jon Benjamin, British High Commissioner's to Ghana, who ends his posting to Ghana this month.

The evening opened with a moving welcome address by Mr Jon Benjamin and a speech from the Attorney General, Honourable Gloria Akuffo, who toasted to the Queen. This was followed by the cutting of the ceremonial birthday cake by the President together with the British High Commissioner.

The Queen’s Birthday is celebrated by British diplomatic missions across the world, on or around either of these dates. Yes, how do you start your own business after you have made the choice not to be an employee? I am assuming you have gone through your 7 P’s of the marketing mix. If you have not, here is your list but we will talk more in details in another issue of ENJOY. 7 P’s of the marketing mix Product Product refers to what you are selling, including all of the features, advantages and benefits that your customers can enjoy from buying your goods or services.

Price This refers to your pricing strategy for your products and services and how it will affect your customers.

These are the promotional activities you use to make your customers aware of your products and services, including advertising, sales tactics, promotions and direct marketing.

Generally these are referred to as marketing tactics.

Personnel Personnel refer to the staff and salespeople who work for your business, including yourself.

Packaging /Process Process refers to the processes involved in delivering your products and services to the customer.

Physical evidence Physical evidence refers to everything your customers see when interacting with your business. Physical evidence can also refer to your staff and how they dress and act.

So now that you know the Big 7, let’s get down to registering our company.

Company Registration Depending on the industry or sector that an investor intends to operate in, they must, in addition to registering the business entity at the Registrar General’s department, obtain an operating license from the regulator of the

industry or sector.

For instance a mineral/mining license will have to be obtained from the Minerals Commission, a banking license from the Bank of Ghana or an insurance license for the National Insurance Commission.

The types of business entities that can be registered at the Registrar Generals Department are: 1. Sole Proprietorship 2. Partnership 3. Company Limited by Shares(Limited and Unlimited) 4. Company Limited by Guarantee (Limited and Unlimited) 5. External Company

Financial TreNDS

ENJOY Sole Proprietorship A sole proprietorship is registered under the Registration of Business Names Act 1962 (Act 151). There are no formal legal requirements for registering this form of business. The owner or proprietor owns all the assets and is responsible for all the liabilities of the business. This is because the registered business does not acquire a separate legal entity from the owner.

Act 151 requires that a business name other than the personal name of the proprietor be registered with the registrar of companies. This means that there is no need to register the business if the owner intends to use his personal name.

Partnership A Partnership is where two or more persons carry on business jointly for the purpose of making profits. Partnership in Ghana is regulated by the Incorporated Private Partnership Act 1962(Act 152).

Persons who intend to go into partnership will be required to file a Partnership Deed or Agreement, which sets out the terms or regulations of the relationship with the registrar of companies.

In Ghana, a Partnership does not cease to exist upon the exit of a partner by death or resignation or for any other reason.

Professional firms such as law and accountancy firms commonly use this form of business.

Any partnership or association that grows to more than twenty individuals would have to be incorporated into a company.

Company.

The formation of a Company in Ghana is governed by the Companies Act 1963 (Act 179). Per the provisions of Act 179, any one or more persons may form an incorporated company. Companies may be formed either for profit or otherwise. A company could be either private or public.

Private Company A private company has three main characteristics: (i) It limits the total number of its members and debenture holders to fifty. (ii) It is prohibited from making an invitation to the public to purchase its shares or to deposit money for fixed periods or payable at call. (iii) It restricts the rights of its members to transfer shares.

Public Company This is a company which is owned by the general public or whose shares are traded on the stock market. They are usually required to regularly disclose or publish their financial statement to their shareholders. It is able to raise funds capital through the sale of shares/stock to the public.

he annual holiday period is now around the corner. In the next few weeks, pupils and students will vacate classrooms and lecture theatres, and start looking for the best way to spend worthwhile holidays. And parents will be left scratching their heads as to what exotic destination to send their wards to. Look no further, for São Tomé and Principe beckons!

Coiled in the heart of the Gulf of Guinea, this archipelago consisting of two islands 300 km off the coast of Gabon, and laid on the Equator, will surprise you and charm you with its exceptional diversity.

A press tour of the Republic of São Tomé and Principe was organised for us by TAP Portugal, the Portuguese flag carrier, in May 2017. By the way, only TAP Portugal flies to São Tomé and Principe from Ghana. The journey from Accra took about an hour and 40 minutes, then we landed at Aeroporto Internacional de Sao Tome, on the ‘Islands in the Middle of the World’.

Looking through the windows while the TAP Portugal pilot was manoeuvring over the blue sea in order to position his plane for a smooth landing, or admiring the landscape during our ride to the hotel, this is what came to my mind: “Nature has been very generous with

Many beautiful beaches border the steep shores of the two islands. The waters are warm, clear and attractive. The forest, dense and lush, is present everywhere. There are also many streams on the archipelago. We learnt that among the most important peaks are the Pico de S. Tomé with 2024 meters (the highest point of the two islands), Pico Pinheiro, Pico Cabunde, Pico Papagaio and Pico de Cão Grande. The latter is a reference to the landscape of São Tomé.

São Tomé and Principe’s total area is 1001 km², making it one of the smallest States on the planet. The largest island, São Tomé, extends over 864 km². The capital city, which bears the name of the island, lies to the northeast and brings together more than a third of the total population, which is estimated at 190,344 inhabitants, according to a World Bank 2015 figure. On the island of Principe, 174 km away from the island of São Tomé, the population is about 7.800 inhabitants for 137 km².

The official language of Santomean ― as citizens of the archipelago are called ― is Portuguese. The national currency is the dobra (STD), pegged with the euro: 1 euro = 24,500 STD. By the way, it is because the Ilheu das Rolas (literally ‘the island of the Doves’), a small islet facing the southern tip of São Tomé, is crossed precisely by the Equator that the country is referred to as the Islands in the Middle of the World.

We learnt also that tourist possibilities are endless: hiking, diving, big fishing, ecotourism, discovery of the cocoa plantations, or simply relaxing on one of the many beaches. São Tomé and Principe promises all that, as 26 | June 2017 ENJOY No 120

well as the wonderful Sao Nicholao waterfall about 800 metre high.

The islands are also a botanical paradise with more than 700 varieties of flowers and orchids, as well as a sanctuary of some 180 species of birds, of which more than thirty are endemic!

The history of São Tomé and Principe tells of the development of the cocoa culture, making these islands, at the beginning of the last century, the world's first producer of cocoa. From that time, the nickname of "Chocolate Island", has followed the country! Today, chocolate from the cocoa of São Tomé is recognized as one of the finest in the world!

History holds it equally that São Tomé and Principe is a country with no history of war, and presumably the safest country in Africa. The twin islands were uninhabited until the year 1470, when Portuguese navigators discovered them. They then became a colony of Portugal, until Independence in 1975.

----------------By itself, the 4-Star Hotel Pestana Ecuador, where we lodged, is worth planning and embarking on a trip to São Tomé and Principe. I readily concur with Daily Graphic’s Seth Bokpe who perceived an “aura of a lush paradise” around it when we reached there.

As a matter of fact, the serenity and exquisiteness of the place, enhanced with artistic landscaping and professional service, simply sweep one away during the day. And at night, the comfort of the room, coupled with the roar of the sea nearby, simply makes one enjoy a good sleep.

São Tomé seems to be taking it easy with life. So does the PESTANA Hotel Group, which has been operating in the archipelago since 2004. The Group boasts 4-Star hotel Pestana Ecuador, 5-Star hotel Pestana São Tomé and 4-Star Pestana Miramar.

He was both mother and father to me. Our mother passed away early on and he was all I had.

He had always been judged to be “too soft” by the other men in the family, but was strong enough to carve his own path. He inspired me to allow my son to just be himself instead of dictating the do’s or don’ts of the old fashioned male stereotype.

While we may celebrate Father’s Day this June, let us take this opportunity to celebrate all beneficial male influences in a child’s life: uncles, role models, mentors, fathers, grandpas and brothers. Here are just a few benefits to having male influences at home:

If he was a young male in today’s society he would have fit in much better. Gone are the days when the male members of a family or community were viewed through a narrow lens of just a sole provider male in the family. Increasingly now, boys and men can now explore a full range of emotions and roles with reasonably less limitations.

However, speaking from a personal and professional point of view there is still a unique set of traits that is beneficial to the growing child.

Males are perfectly capable of being strong nurturers and do it much differently to women. One noticeable difference is in the manner in which they play – they tend to be playmates in the game whereas women tend to structure the game and prepare for it. Many studies show that children who play with male nurturers may have stronger turn-taking, problemsolving and social skills, whereas play with their female counter parts tends to nurture stronger verbal and planning abilities. You can see why having both influences would be beneficial.

Research and studies indicate a lower involvement in destructive behaviour in boys who have positive male influences in their lives. This role model seems to guide healthy gender identity and appropriate manners of channeling negative emotions.

Girls tend to benefit from genuine, positive comments from male role models – there is a clear benefit to their self-confidence. They also tend to have similar expectations from their future partners as they received from close male relatives.

So, if positive, this can be a good base line to use in the future.

It is clear that having both genders influence in a child’s upbringing may be a good opportunity to vanquish gender stereotypes and have a mix of roles in the family that is more fitting in today’s world. e

Dear Billie, My brother JR left for the US eight years ago to go to college and university. For some reason, he dropped out and started getting in trouble with a group of boys he met on campus. He was eventually kicked out of his apartment too for beating up the landlord. Our father had to go and bail him out and brought him back to Ghana. Since then, we’ve had no peace! He is constantly arguing with everyone.

JR used to be a very affable, funny young man, loved by everyone.

He’s like a stranger to us now.

Nobody can speak to him without him getting into a rage. Other times, he locks himself in his room and doesn’t come out for days.

He spends an extreme amount of money on partying and on various girlfriends. I’ve also seen him very depressed and he sometimes talks of killing himself. My mother wants him to see a psychiatrist but my o o 34 120 34 | |June June2017 2016ENJOY ENJOYNN 110

I think your mother is absolutely right. It’s quite apparent that JR is in pain and could well be suffering from a mental or psychological disorder which needs investigating.

A psychiatrist would be your first port of call for an assessment.

From what you are describing, i.e. the mood swings, rages, suicidal thoughts and all his other symptoms, it seems to indicate that he is at the very least emotionally if not mentally imbalanced. Bipolar comes to mind and if diagnosed, can be managed with medications and talk therapy. But let me not do any more guess work because mental health is very complex and best dealt with by professionals. Try to convince your Dad that it is in the whole family’s interest to get JR to see someone as soon as possible before it gets worse. Very delicate situation! e Please do let me know how you get on.

Dear Billie, My sister Ama is getting married in a couple of months. Everything looks good on the surface but I know my sister. She does not love him! She has always been an opportunist and is only after his money. I met Kwame first and we’ve been best friends for years. I’ve always loved him but never told him. Somehow, I didn’t want to spoil the friendship.

When I met him, he was working in a bank and over the years got promoted to his present managerial position. When Ama met him, she would barely greet him until she found out about his job status. She bulldozed me out of the way and started ‘working’ on him. In a very short time, all Kwame saw was Ama. Ama this, Ama that! Now they have announced their engagement and Ama is already planning a huge wedding fit for a princess. I am so upset that Kwame does not see her for who she is but I loved him before he became the big shot that he is now. Advice Corner Dear Sarah, I can imagine how annoyed you must be with this whole situation but I believe you must have had a few occasions to speak to Kwame or at the very least with your sister about your feelings.

Why didn’t you? The fact that you feel she pushed you out of the way doesn’t mean that you would have been the one Kwame would have chosen as his wife.

Sometimes we miss opportunities and we become embittered with others and ourselves. Neither you nor Kwame made any attempts during all these years to take it a step further as you mentioned, in your case, not to spoil the relationship. Maybe that’s all you were ever meant to be! Why don’t you give Kwame the benefit of the doubt and trust that maybe, just maybe he chose the right girl after all. As for your sister being an opportunist, why not? This is what life is all about, isn’t it? You see an opportunity and you grab it with both hands. Wish the couple well and wait for your own Prince Charming to sweep you off your feet! Dear Billie, I am married to James and he is HIV positive. I knew he was positive before we got married but I loved him so I decided to go ahead. We have a daughter who was conceived in a lab under the supervision of doctors. Forward a few years and our relationship has deteriorated drastically. James has had a string of disappointments business-wise and has started drinking. He comes home late, reeking of alcohol and women’s perfume. I suspect he has been sleeping around and what scares me the most is that I’m sure he has unprotected sex.

I’ve passed the stage of being angry about him cheating, I’m more worried about those poor women he may be infecting out there. I confronted him a few times about it but he denies the whole thing and becomes angry. What do I do?

Dear Susan, This is a tough one! Like you said, being cheated upon is hard enough to deal with but the idea of your husband infecting other women out there is spine-chilling! I agree that something must be done for everybody’s sake but maybe not by you. You will definitely need the support of perhaps a member of his family, I assume they are aware of his health status, or your family doctor or even your local pastor.

Being in denial is quite common with HIV sufferers as they are often confused, angry and seemingly powerless. I suspect your husband is on medications in order to manage his condition, so maybe talking to the doctor at his clinic could be the way forward. They are confidentiality-bound and could talk to him as part of the emotional support usually provided to HIV sufferers. Please do not tackle this on your own as you will continue to be the recipient of his wrath. e My heart goes out to you! Let us know how you are, please.

École Ronsard Celebrates Africa Day 2017

frica Day 2017 has come and gone. Like every year, École Ronsard, a bilingual (French & English) school located at East Legon in Accra, marked the day with a special commemoration event on the school premises, to celebrate African Unity in grand style.

The theme of the year, “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through investments in Youth”, was on point for the celebration at École Ronsard on 24th May 2017. Parents and other invited guests were treated to songs, dance, recitations and playlets in English and in French by the toddlers as well as their seniors. African culture was in honour, depicted especially in the stylish national wears the young boys and girls displayed so proudly as they, in turns, took to the podium to showcase their talents and skills.

L’INSOUMIS aims to raise awareness of the Ghanaian consumer about global fashion issues that should be front and centre whenever a consumer is making a fashion purchase anywhere in the world. Hope therefore is seeking to create a menswear brand that stands for quality for the Ghanaian consumer, without being a luxury brand.

“My intention was to create a men’s fashion brand that delivers on international standards of quality at non-luxury prices for consumers looking for higher quality products with no overseas travel required”, he explains, adding: “Ultimately, I wanted to create a simpler shopping experience for busy professionals and executives where they can quickly shop our limited range of carefully selected products ― stylish shirts and shoes, make their purchases securely online, and have the items delivered to their homes within 48 hours”.

Since arriving in Accra in early 2016, Hope has worked on finding the right foreign and local partners to bring his vision to reality.

Lamb Balls in a Bulgur Wheat Crust (Koubeba)

INGREDIENTS 500 g bulgur wheat, soaked overnight 100 g ground lamb 1 tbsp semolina 1 οniοn 1 potato black pepper salt 1 cup water (or as needed) flour and vegetable oil for frying For the filling 300 g ground lamb 2 tbsp butter 1 onion 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 tbsp pine nuts

Grate the onion Boil and mash the potato Chop the parsley Sauté onion and garlic in butter. Add meat and brown lightly. Stir in remaining ingredients and cook for 3-4 mins more.

Shape filling into small balls and store in freezer.

Making the crust Combine all ingredients in food processor. Add a little water and blend into a thick dough.

Separate dough into balls and let rest.

A Clean City, How Possible?

y friend and I were sitting in an air-conditioned saloon car we ordered courtesy of this new wave ondemand transportation service.

We were having a delightful ride from one end to almost the other end of the N1 highway in Accra, putting the world to rights, when the conversation drifted to the promise made by President Nana Akufo-Addo a couple of Juanito Mario de Medeiros P u b l i c a t i o n M a n a g e r weeks ago to make the State capital the cleanest city on the African continent in the next four years.

Of course we loved the idea, and we were not surprised media houses in the country made a fuss of the pledge. Eventually, the car/cab stopped at a red light. As usual, a swarm of hawkers jostled to the stationary vehicles and my friend waved to an ice cream seller. The latter quickly brought out the produce, handed it over, collected his money and dashed off, forgetting already the very existence of the bloke he had just transacted business with.

I asked my friend: “What is that for?” pointing to the small transparent polythene envelope his ice cream pouch came with. For an answer, he simply put the ice cream pouch into “that” and started enjoying the frozen refreshment. I insisted: “What is that for? Why did you accept that polythene bag? How do you expect to have a clean city in four, ten or twenty years if you keep patronizing, in this case of yours very unnecessarily, such highly littering items? I really don’t see what this bag brings to you. Does it help protect your fingers from the cold of the ice cream? Can you dry your fingers with it after enjoying the ice cream?

Totally useless!”

He stared at me, astounded at my sudden change of mood. I continued: “See, you and I just concurred with the President that we, in Ghana and in Africa, deserve spick and span cities too, like those we admire when we fly overseas. We agreed that eventually, waste management, proper streets with decent pavement, effective drainage systems, functioning street lighting, ambient Internet, all that should stop being a mirage to us. All that should make the modern-day clean city we aspire to.

“But then, what about our unending craze for polythene bags in this country? Just an example: what happens when you go to a kiosk in your area or to a bigger shop anywhere in town and buy a pack of shaving sticks, or a box of matches, or a pack of batteries for your torch light, or even a pen? It’s put in a polythene bag for you.”

- That’s true, he retorted. That means the fight against polythene bag pollution is not going anywhere. You know, there should be intense education of the masses, and... why is it that people going shopping do not go with bags, proper bags anymore? In homes not so long ago, there always used to be dedicated cloth bags with zips for bread.

No one would go out to buy bread empty-handed, you would go with that bag. I remember also women used to leave their houses with fancy baskets while going to the market. Why have we lost all those simple but rewarding habits?
