during this month of April, among which are the World Health Day on April 7 and the Earth Day on April 22. May we all be conscious of the weight of those days for the survival of our planet Earth and behave accordingly!

Here at ENJOY Magazine, we shall be remembering a great man whose sad anniversary is commemorated this month, for in the light of what has been occurring of late in his country, the United States of America, the relevance of Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s dream strikes today.

We hope our friends will turn out in their numbers again this year to join Mrs Jacqui Ahomka Lindsey, Mrs Surama King, Ms Folake Ojo, Mrs Dzborgdi Dosoo, Mrs Grace Krobo-Edusei and Mrs Karen Hendrickson, able Trustees of The Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana, to support their annual charity ball and make it a huge success. The cause is noble, and fun is definitely guaranteed. See you at Labadi Beach Hotel on 16th May 2015!

In line with the current trend of economic diplomacy followed by African Chanceries, Her Excellency Mrs Pavelyn Tendai Musaka, Ambassador of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, has been explaining what her country and Ghana can do together by way of south-south cooperation in order to empower properly their people economically and achieve genuine economic independence in the continent. We bring to you the interview she has granted our Publication Manager on the occasion of the 35th Independence Anniversary of Zimbabwe.

The Republic of Zimbabwe is celebrating its 35th Independence anniversary on 18th April 2015. To mark the occasion, H. E. Mrs Pavelyn Tendai Musaka, Ambassador of the Republic of Zimbabwe to Ghana and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, has been speaking, among other topics, on the business opportunities Zimbabwe offers Ghanaian entrepreneurs. This is an interview with our Publication Manager, Juanito Mario de Medeiros.

ENJOY: Your Excellency, congratulations from the entire ENJOY team on the 35th Independence anniversary of your country. We wish you all the best!

How is Zimbabwe celebrating this?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: T h a n k you for your good wishes. For the Government and the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, we have come a long way since 18th April 6 | April 2015 ENJOY No 98

1980. We know what the country has gone through. So we are saying on this particular date 18th April 2015 that we have come of age, let us celebrate our achievements and also learn from the challenges that we face as a country as we move forward into the future.

ENJOY: The relations between Zimbabwe and Ghana date back to the times of the struggles for

liberation in Africa, with Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Comrade Robert Gabriel Mugabe‌ Can you tell us a bit about that period?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: In fact, Zimbabwean freedom fighters came to settle in Ghana, including His Excellency Robert Gabriel Mugabe, of course before he became our President, just to be inspired and given the

“Economic liberation is the logical continuation of what happened those days when they fought to take us out of colonialism and downright domination.” guidance on how to wage the liberation struggle. So from the founding President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and other Pan-Africanists, many of our nationalist Leaders drew a lot of inspiration and actually got to liberate our country.

ENJOY: It has been 35 years now that Zimbabwe was liberated. Some would say 35 long years, some would say only 35 years. What is left of that glorious epoch when freedom fighters congregated in Ghana to draw inspiration from one another to liberate their countries?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: Fortunately enough, when we look back, we realize that Africans have achieved their countries’ political liberation. And we remember Dr Nkrumah’s words to the effect that the independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked to the total liberation of the whole continent. But now, as we look forward, the current leaders are seized with the responsibility of ensuring that Africa is liberated economically. That is a challenge that our forefathers have left for us to take up. They did their part. Their successors must also make sure their responsibilities are successfully taken care of. Economic liberation is the logical continuation of what happened those days when they fought to take us out of colonialism and downright domination.

ENJOY: Economic liberation entails economic diplomacy, which is even the order of the day in Chanceries the world over.

How does that translate with the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Accra?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: Indeed economic diplomacy is the new thrust. In the case of my country, we have negotiated that curve.

As an Embassy, we are trying to make good that paradigm shift.

Just to illustrate our resolve, we are organizing this year a Ghanaian Trade and Investment Promotion Mission to visit Zimbabwe during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair 2015, which is taking place from 28th April to 2nd May 2015 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. It is our proposal that during this Trade Fair, there be a one day Zimbabwe-Ghana Business Forum to highlight the specific areas

in which Zimbabwe and Ghana should co-operate. To this effect we have engaged the Government of the Republic of Ghana through Honourable Hannah Serwah Tetteh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and we have agreed to start negotiations for a General Agreement for Cooperation. We have received the documents from the Ghanaian side and forwarded the same to Harare, where our Government is now working on it. At the end of the day, we are going to reactivate the Bilateral Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation.

ENJOY: How many Zimbabwean businesses are established in Ghana? In what areas do they operate mainly?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: While we acknowledge that our ENJOY No 98 April 2015 | 7

E NJ OY bilateral political relations are cordial, we must admit that we have a long way to go in terms of the economic cooperation. However, talking of Corporate Zimbabwe in Ghana, we have one vibrant company in the hospitality industry, the ‘African Sun’, which is doing very well. Besides, there are a number of Zimbabwean expatriates working for lots of Ghanaian companies in the hospitality industry, the ICT sector, the financial services, the mining sector, and in many other areas. Frankly, there are not many Zimbabwean companies established in Ghana but we are hopeful that through the intervention of this Embassy here in Accra and our counterpart in Harare, many companies will come and do fruitful business here.

ENJOY: In terms of bilateral exchanges, what has Zimbabwe been exporting to Ghana?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: We used to have some considerable amount of goods exchanged between our two countries when Ghana Airways was operating between Harare and Accra. But since that direct air-link is no more, there is not much taking place in terms of bilateral trade, but we hope that sooner rather than later, entrepreneurs from our respective countries will be able to invest in the airline industry so that the direct link will be revived, because other ways of transporting goods between Zimbabwe and Ghana are rather challenging for the private sector. However, there is a lot of potential, for example in the horticultural industry. We produce a lot of fresh flowers, which the Ghanaian market can be much interested in. We also produce a lot of meat (beef and others) and if there are any private sector entities interested in importing some, we have it. Livestock Breeding and Tourism are two other sectors where Zimbabwean expertise is needed in Ghana.

ENJOY: What about your imports from Ghana?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: We in Zimbabwe like Ghanaian textiles. African printed fabrics have become very popular in my country due to their very high quality. Also, in terms of sharing expertise, we feel Zimbabwe can benefit a lot from Ghana’s experience, especially in the area of entrepreneurship skills training. Here, there is more for us to learn, because the majority of my compatriots are used to being employees, but through the Zimbabwe Agenda for Socio-Economic Transformation — ZIMASSET— our Government, under the ruling ZANU-PF party, has taken the decision to have a result based-managed economic agenda blueprint implemented by all Embassies. So we are all trying to see how best to attract investors to come and invest in the country in the various sectors. Here are some of the areas Ghanaian investors should focus on: mainly Food and Nutrition as we need to alleviate the shortage of food and improve on nutrition. Then we have Transport and Infrastructure, followed

by Poverty Alleviation: we are also talking of beneficiation. We want value addition to our products. In gold mining for example, we would like to be able to produce our own jewellery and stop exporting gold as raw material.

We are also interested in the financial services sector; we feel Ghana is advanced in this area.

ENJOY: We move on to International Diplomacy. What impact is Zimbabwe making on the African Union as head of the institution?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: In May 1963, Comrade Robert Gabriel Mugabe had the privilege to attend here in Accra, Ghana the inaugural session 8 | April 2015 ENJOY No 98

that established the OAU in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. He was then a freedom fighter. Now, 52 years later, in January 2015, His Excellency President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, is Chairman of the African Union. Prior to that, he became Chairman of the Southern African Development Community. So we are celebrating this year as Zimbabweans across the political divide, for it is a great honour for us to chair the two institutions concurrently. For us in Zimbabwe, what it means is that we must ensure that, in the course of our tenure, we make a significant contribution toward improving the way we manage the African Union itself. For example, on basic things like financing the coffers of the African Union, we have relied to some extent and even over-relied on the donor community. And yet we should be trying as much as

Profile possible to raise our own resources to fund the operations of the African Union. Only then can we enjoy the sovereignty that our forefathers fought for and determine our own destination. That is one area where Zimbabwe has decided to take the lead, with the co-operation of other African Heads of States.

Now, I want to seize this opportunity, in my capacity as Ambassador of the Republic of Zimbabwe, to extend our gratitude, on behalf of my Government, to the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) member countries as well as the African Union (AU) member countries, for the support that they gave to the Government of Zimbabwe to chair these two institutions. They did not bow to pressures, but rather rose in the interest of Africa.

ENJOY: To the Deanship now.

How do we understand ‘Dean of the Diplomatic Corps’?

Now, I want to seize this opportunity, in my capacity as Ambassador of the Republic of Zimbabwe, to extend our gratitude, on behalf of my Government, to the SADEC member countries as well as the AU member countries, for the support that they gave to the Government of Zimbabwe to chair these two institutions.

They did not bow to pressures, but rather rose in the interest of Africa.

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: According to the Vienna Convention of 1961 on Diplomatic Relations, the Dean is the longest serving Ambassador in a given country, and in the case of Ghana, I am qualified to be the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps for serving in Ghana for over 9 years now. I am in my tenth year. The office of the Dean does the co-ordination, in close liaison with the Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, where the role of the Diplomatic Corps is required.

ENJOY: What is your experience in Ghana so far?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: L e t me say that three beautiful things that happened to me in Ghana.

First, I visited the Kwame-Nkrumah Mausoleum and saw where the late Dr Nkrumah is resting. I am a Pan-Africanist at heart and I am

aware and I appreciate that but for the sacrifice of the first President of the Republic of Ghana and of Ghanaians, my country, then Rhodesia, would not have been liberated in 1980. So to me it was a very self-fulfilling moment when I saw where he was laid to rest after the work that he did not only for my country but also for many other countries in our sub-region and Africa as a whole. Indeed, he was the greatest African of the millennium!

Secondly, I extol the fact that Ghanaians are so God-fearing.

That impacted me in a very positive way, to the extent that I ended up being ordained a Deaconess in my church. It was because I was influenced by the piety of Ghanaians.

Thirdly, I have been so inspired by the high level of entrepreneurship skills that Ghanaians have acquired.

Indeed, as I am talking to you, I am a registered Fashion Designer with a famous fashion designing college in Accra.

ENJOY: Your final words?

H. E. Mrs MUSAKA: I challenge every sector within Ghana that they must identify their private sector partners in my country Zimbabwe and in any other part of the African continent so that they can initiate and blaze a trail in integrating Africa in their respective sectors. The same goes to the youth and the women, for we need to integrate Africa through peopleto-people interactions as set out by the African Union Heads of States in the Agenda 2063 programmes.

The Charter of La Francophonie was adopted on the occasion of the 7th Francophonie Summit which took place in Hanoi, Vietnam from 14th to 16th November 1997, and revised by the 21st Ministerial Conference of la Francophonie in Antananarivo, Madagascar on 23rd November 2005.

But the most enchanting story about La Francophonie today is perhaps about the life of the incumbent Secretary General, Ms Michaëlle Jean from Canada, who became the first woman to lead the International Organisation of La Francophonie. Recounting developments in her life, some columnists even talked of the “lives” of Michaelle Jean.

Actually, Michaëlle Jean was born in Haiti in 1957. Duvalier’s dictatorship was raging then, and terror was rife. So were arbitrary arrests. She and her family fled the island and settled in Quebec, Canada at age 11.

Some university degrees later, Michaëlle Jean became a journalist and broadcaster for Radio-Canada and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), again the first black woman there.

E NJ OY In 2005, Michaëlle Jean was appointed Governor General of Canada by Queen Elizabeth II, a position which made her the Head of the State and Commanderin chief of the Canadian Armed Forces, which was no mean feat for someone who was not born a Canadian.

With her voice filled with emotion, she has explained: “I came here, a refugee, and here I am today at the head of the highest Institution of the State... That is Canada… that is Canada! It is possible!”

Not hiding her amusement, the OIF Secretary General would recall equally how her situation once put a colleague Head of State in utter bewilderment, while she was on official visit as Governor General of Canada: “How is that possible, you were not born in Canada, you arrived there as a refugee with your parents…”

But the most beautiful homage paid Michaëlle Jean for her excellent achievements comes from former President Abdou Diouf of Senegal, immediate past Secretary General of OIF, as he was handing the Francophonie baton over to her in January 2015: “I am leaving, reassured to be replaced in this prominent position by Ms Michaëlle Jean, who has all the qualities to carry high, very high, the torch of the Francophonie”. e

FRENCH GASTRONOMY AND CULINARY DIPLOMACY

1500 dinners were served in 150 countries around the world on Thursday, 19th March 2015 to celebrate French gastronomy under the Goût de France/Good France project.

In each of the 1300 participating restaurants, guests were treated to a French-style menu comprising traditional French aperitif, a cold starter, a hot starter, fish, shellfish, meat, poultry, French cheese and chocolate dessert. French wines and liqueurs were not missing, of course.

The Goût de France/Good France project — featuring 1000 chefs for 1000 menus on 5 continents — was on the initiative of world-renowned chef Alain Ducasse with active support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development of France. By tickling taste buds around the world, promoters of the projects sought to stimulate French tourism and carry the colours of French cuisine with pride.

In Ghana, the restaurant Bread & Wine at Osu was selected to participate in the global event and 5% of its proceeds under the project are to be donated to the NGO ‘Smiles for Christmas’ towards building a library for the ‘Royal See Orphanage’ in Kasoa.

• Magpies organize funerals for their dead, according Dr Bekoff of the University of Colorado, who studied these birds and found that they have an extraordinary compassionate side. Magpies, like gorillas, elephants and dolphins, mourn their dead and even organize a kind of funeral. However, magpies have a unique way of doing that. LCS Celebrates Diversity At International Festival Day

A record number of around 1200 people gathered at the LCS soccer field to watch flag bearers, the eldest nationals of countries represented at LCS, carrying 59 flags and proudly representing their countries in the Parade of Nations at their International Festival Day (IFD). They were led by a group of drummers and dancers who serenaded the Ghanaian contingent and LCS flag bearers, Seniors who have been at the school for the longest number of years. The school's mascot, the Lincoln Lion, also led the Parade and joined in the family fun.

The Parade of Nations featured students waving a sea of flags. As they walked out onto the soccer field, they saluted the audience in their native languages followed by students, staff, and parents from their respective countries. This year's IFD theme, Friendship and Unity, was beautifully reflected in the colourful costumes and elaborately decorated booths, symbolizing the diversity “This year's IFD theme, Friendship and that makes the LCS community so special. As part of the event, spectators were also treated to an origami show by Japanese students at LCS as well as impressively choreographed cultural dances by parents, teachers and students who all came together on the dance floor to celebrate their diversity. e

he BBC has revealed the rare case of a young American who would become drunk whenever he ate French fries or potatoes. Though he never took alcohol, he was often accused of being a drunkard, for, after eating, I would be clumsy and vulgar. He would even wake up at night to vomit. Sometimes it would come a few days after he consumed potatoes, sometimes, the effects would be immediate.

Upset by his breath, his wife accused him of hiding alcohol in his home. Then, further to several medical examinations carried out at the hospital, Nick Hess learnt that he was affected by the "auto-brasserie syndrome", a very rare disease. There was a husky, her name was Siberia. She had two friends.

One was a Chihuahua, her name was Chichi. Her other friend was a Golden Retriever, her name was Goldie. She had fun with her friends.

One day Siberia and Goldie were going for a walk and Chi-

chi came by. She saw them walking together and didn't like that. Chichi pushed Goldie in the bush. Siberia barked, “stop.”

Goldie liked Chichi as a friend, but Chichi didn't. Goldie was injured in the bush.

Siberia asked, “Why did you push Goldie.”

Chichi said, “I don’t like Goldie she is mean to me so I don’t want you to hang out with her.” Siberia said, “She is very kind to me.”“Fine,” said Chichi and ran off. Goldie said, “You

shouldn’t hang out with her.” “You have to pick her or me.”

“Now,” replied Siberia.“No,” said Goldie.

They ran off to the arcade. Siberia wasn’t having much fun she was having a hard decision. Goldie was mad at Chichi for

trying to take her friend. Siberia thought if she got them to be friends she wouldn’t have to choose. She had a plan. Siberia would invite them over to her house but they wouldn’t know that the other person would also be coming.

The next day Siberia invited them over. One came in the back door and the other in the front. Siberia sat them down. Chichi said, “What is Goldie doing here.”

Ancilla celebrates 15th Anniversary

It was all joy at Ancilla Primary and Junior High School at Haatso-Agbogba, on 27th March 2015 as the institution celebrated Ancilla Day, which corresponds this year to the 15th Anniversary of its creation.

Parents gladly joined students and staff to mark the event with a grand rally on the school premises, during which the assistant headmistress, Reverend Sister Lucy Dei (HHCJ), recounted how the school was founded in 2000 by Reverend Sister Germaine Occansey.

Shedding light on how the name of the school came to be, Reverend Sister Lucy said Ancilla means ‘handmaid’ in Latin, referring to how Virgin Mary responded to Angel Gabriel who had come to announce

to her the Lord’s decision to use her to give birth to Jesus. Mary responded: “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord! Let what you have said be done unto me according to your words”. So, while commemorating the Annunciation on 25th March every year, the Ancilla congregations all over the world observe their own day.

Some class 5 students who spoke to ENJOY’s Clementina Ayirebi-Acquah insisted that “Ancilla Day is about commemorating an essential institution”.

The Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana presents the ‘Desert Moon – Arabian Night’, a major fund raising event for the year 2015. It will be a night of Arabian delights and glamour, that will take place in the Omanye hall of the Labadi Beach hotel, Accra on 16th May, 2015.

Tea Sparkler INGREDIENTS 4 cups boiling water 8 hibiscus tea bags 1/2 cup honey ice 2 cups sparkling water (Perrier) 1/4 cup mint leaves, for garnish strawberries, for garnish

ďƒ™ Directions 1. In a large pitcher, combine tea bags, honey, and boiling water; let steep 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how strong you like your tea.

2. Remove tea bags.

3. And ice to pitcher and stir in sparkling water.

4. Add mint 5. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until chilled.

6. Garnish with strawberries.

4 small russet potatoes 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 teaspoons kosher or sea salt, plus for seasoning Freshly ground black pepper 1 bunch chives (about 1-ounce) 1/2 cup sour cream 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 slices bacon, cooked crispy, and crumbled, optional garnish

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Toss the potatoes in a bowl with the oil, salt, and pepper until completely coated. Place on a baking sheet and bake until fork tender, about 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring a small pot of water to a boil and salt it generously. Fill a medium bowl with ice water. Put the chives in the boiling water and cook until bright green, about 30 seconds. Immediately, plunge into the ice water to set the color. Squeeze all the water out of the chives and give them a rough chop. Put into a blender with the sour cream. Pulse until you have a smooth green sauce and season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Chill until ready to serve. (Or, thinly slice the chives and stir into the sour cream, season with salt and pepper, to taste.)

Cut the potatoes lengthwise and then across. Pinch and press the sides to open the potatoes. Divide the butter among the potatoes and serve with the sour cream.

Garnish with crumbled bacon if desired.
