Superintendent

Pastor Marland Gerome Montgomery was born to the late Mr. Andrew Williams Montgomery and Mrs. Lillian Reynolds Montgomery on a United States Army Base in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The family traveled all over the world before finally settling in Atlanta, Georgia in 1968. A “military man” at heart, Pastor Montgomery served in the United States Army as well as worked for the United States Postal Service for 15

years, doing both duties concurrently.

At the age of 23, he was called by the Holy Spirit into ministry, and under the covering of the Church of God in Christ, Pastor Montgomery was licensed and ordained. His first sermon was entitled, “A Sure Foundation.” Pastor Montgomery has served in many different positions and ministries all over the country and the world. In 1995, he relocated to Savannah, Georgia and started having Bible studies at a friend’s house after making a promise to God that if he ever left Germany he would tell his family about the Lord. Those Bible study sessions eventually morphed into Seed Planters Community Church. Pastor Montgomery served under his spiritual father, Bishop Dr. T. A. Body for seven years before the Lord led him to go

and serve under Bishop Michael J. Paden, Sr. Under Bishop Paden, he was elevated to Superintendent of The Greater Harvest District in 2014 which includes Greater First Church of God in Christ in Knoxville, Kentucky and Greater Grace Church of God in Christ in Atlanta, Georgia. Pastor Montgomery truly has a heart for Christ and serving others. His vision for Seed Planters is to “Train, Disciple, Educate, and

Equip” God’s people. His goal is to develop a people that can deal with adversity and life and still continue to trust God. With a more direct approach, Pastor Marland is able to minister to people from where they are. He believes that no matter what level of faith a person is on, it is his responsibility to assist in bringing them higher. Seed Planters continues to seek to advance the lives of the church and community by implementing services such as a homeless ministry, after school

program, GED assistance, as well as tutorial and computer literacy programs. While continuing to make strives for the Kingdom of God, Pastor Montgomery is first and foremost a family man. He and his beautiful wife of 33 years, First Lady Sibongile Montgomery, have two children, Ayasha and Mashaun, and eight grandchildren.

Pastor Montgomery’s preaching style is to be transparent and real, meaning that it is “out of the box” and not conventional or confined to the four walls of the church. He is an individual who strives daily to fulfill his purpose in Christ, and as the Holy Spirit leads him, the world will come to know him simply as the man who really loves God and his family.

Ketanji Brown Jackson Judge

Judge Jackson was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Miami, Florida. Her parents attended segregated primary schools, then attended historically black colleges and universities. Both started their careers as public-school teachers and became leaders and administrators in the Miami-Dade Public School System. When Judge Jackson was in preschool, her father attended law school. In a 2017 lecture, Judge Jackson traced her love of the law back to sitting next to her father in their apartment as he tackled his law school homework—reading cases and preparing for Socratic questioning— while she undertook her preschool homework—coloring books.

husband, Patrick, and their two daughters, in Washington, DC.

Judge Jackson graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, then attended Harvard Law School, where she graduated cum laude and was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Because of her diverse and broad public service, Judge Jackson has a unique appreciation of how critical it is for the justice system to be fair and impartial. With multiple law enforcement officials in her family, she also has a personal understanding of the stakes of the legal system.

Judge Jackson represented defendants who did not have the means to pay for a lawyer. She would be the first former federal public defender to serve on the Supreme Court. Judge Jackson served as Justice Breyer’s law clerk and learned up close how important it is for a Supreme Court Justice to build consensus and speak to a mainstream understanding of the Constitution. President Obama nominated Judge

Jackson to serve as the Vice Chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission in 2009, and she was confirmed with bipartisan support in 2010.

Prior to serving as a judge, Judge Jackson followed in the footsteps of her mentor Justice Breyer by working on the U.S. Sentencing Commission. President Obama nominated Judge Jackson to be a district court judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in 2012. She was confirmed with bipartisan support in 2013. Judge Jackson was one of President Biden’s first judicial nominees. She was confirmed with bipartisan support to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2021.

EMPECCABLE: Tell us about your work. GEORGE WAKEFIELD: I’ve shot a little for everybody including Jet Magazine, a few publications in Essence, and a whole bunch of European publications because I used to shoot in the Middle East, England, and Germany. I shot for Playboy for four years, but I don’t like to say that too much because I get the wrong crowd. I took that off my portfolio and off of social media even though it’s work I’m proud of. And of course I have shot for your awesome magazine.

EMPECCABLE: Tell us about your background and how you got into photography!

WAKEFIELD: I was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York in Jamaica, Queens. I got introduced to photography from an uncle who gave me a camera. I started taking pictures at my high school and then one day somebody used my pictures for the yearbook. I felt what it was like to be published for the first time and it felt good.

I am a retired veteran from the United States army. I picked up my [advanced] photography skills when I got stationed in Germany back in 1980. I then started going to a lot of the fashion shows, started there and I learned that style.

Most of my photography contains lighting because I like colors. But everybody has their own style. There’s no right way or wrong way to do it. While I was in the military, I got stationed all over Europe, Italy, England, Turkey, Greece and even Israel. But the whole time I had my camera

EMPECCABLE | PEOPLE EDITION 17

by my side… My favorite type of photography is probably nature.

EMPECCABLE: How did you get to the point where you knew your work was good and what motivates you to continue?

WAKEFIELD: I’m a firm believer that there’s no style better than another style. I am happy when people acknowledge me for my work, but I never think my work is better than somebody else. I just try to improve on it.

Have consistency. Throughout the years I’ve learned that little things make big differences. You don’t need to change everything. But photography was just my calling.

EMPECCABLE: Do you mentor others in the art of photography?

WAKEFIELD: I’m always willing to give advice. The thing about photographers is that they all have egos. But you can never learn everything about photography.

EMPECCABLE: What is the most important part of being a good photographer?

WAKEFIELD: Connect with whomever you are shooting. If you have a connection with the model, you can show them not what they’re doing wrong, but what they’re doing right and what they can improve on. I was never a photographer to take pictures and say we’re done. I tend to get the models involved and show them the pictures that were taken so they can respond to them. Their response helps me to get the most out of that model.

EMPECCABLE: Who has been your most favorite person to shoot?

WAKEFIELD: My daughter Sydney! She graduated from University of Columbus in Georgia. She had never been

interested in pictures, but has always been a beautiful young lady. Then one day she calls me and says, “Dad can I make an appointment to have a photo shoot with you?” I told her, “You don’t need to make an appointment with your dad. I’ve been trying to shoot you for years!” My daughter is the most beautiful model I’ve ever shot.

But then again everyone is a new experience. So I can’t say I have a favorite. I have some that I’m closer to because I know them personally. But to me every photo shoot is a new relationship that you’re building.

EMPECCABLE: What’s some advice for those starting out in the photography business.

WAKEFIELD: The best advice is don’t give up. I don’t think I know everything and I’m always willing to learn something new. Be open to criticism. In the end. Really the only person that needs to like what you do is yourself. Also, don’t try to be like somebody else. A lot of photographers make the mistake of trying to compare themselves to other photographers. But they got there for a reason and they have a lot of years of trying and a lot of years of failing. But, don’t give up because once you’ve got your niche work on it. People will recognize your work.

I can always be contacted through Instagram at @ GWphotography or Facebook at George Anthony Wakefield.
