In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavors, she is the Founder and Executive Director of Woodlawn Diversity In Action, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization powered by a dedicated community of volunteers for the past 7 years.

O.gul of Thee .O.nth

Post-pandemic, Carlas refocused WDA's efforts on addressing the community's most pressing needs. This shift led to the creation of the Black Wall Street Chicago Festival, WDA’s most significant initiative to date. Additionally, as a real estate broker, Carlas has helped several small business owners secure their own brick-and-mortar locations.

Carlas’s vision for the festival extends beyond typical events; each year brings a unique experience. In 2022, the festival delved into the history of Black Wall Street, showcasing elements of that era through historians, music, dance, antique cars, and art. In 2023, the event evolved to incorporate "Skating and Fashion on Black Wall Street," engaging the youth community in a vibrant, modern celebration. Also including financial literacy and mental health fireside chats.

The festival offers a platform for 100 Black-owned businesses to present their goods and services to the community. Additionally, as a real estate broker, Carlas has helped several small business owners secure their own brick-andmortar locations. Prior to launching the inaugural festival, Carlas launched the "Festival Of Joy," with volunteers bringing celebrations to senior facilities in Woodlawn every weekend in June 2020. She successfully raised funds to partner with food trucks from previous WDA events, providing hot meals and desserts to seniors. A resident expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that the meal served as his Father’s Day celebration, which he otherwise would not have had.

Understanding & Implementing CRM Systems for Improved Customer Relationships

You probably run a small business, and when I say small, I mean small. Less than $200k in revenue, not a lot of customers, maybe a handful of people. You might be a solopreneur, where you run a 1-person business on your own. How do you manage the details of the business? Sales, customer data, email communication with customers, etc.

In the competitive landscape of small businesses, building and maintaining strong customer relationships is crucial for building a successful business. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems have emerged as essential tools to help businesses manage interactions with current and potential customers.

I will delve into the importance of CRM systems, provide an overview of popular CRM tools suitable for small businesses, and offer actionable steps for implementing these systems to enhance customer relationships.

Understanding CRM Systems

What is a CRM

System?

A CRM system is a technology solution that helps businesses manage and analyze customer interactions and data throughout the customer lifecycle.

If you think about aspects of the business such as customer acquisition costs (CAC), key performance indicators (KPI) such as this are vital to understanding how much the business spends to gain a customer and sell a product or service to that customer. To do this, we need tooling that collects the necessary data points that we can analyze to develop this key performance indicator. This is where a CRM can be helpful!

Why is a CRM System Important?

CRM systems offer numerous benefits for small businesses, including:

1. Enhanced Customer Service - A CRM provides detailed information about each customer, enabling personalized and efficient service.

2. Increased Sales - CRM systems help streamline the sales process, build a sales pipeline, automate tasks, and analyze sales data.

3. Improved Customer Retention - By understanding customer needs and behaviors, businesses can create targeted marketing campaigns and loyalty programs.

Popular CRM Tools for Small Businesses

4. Better Data ManagementCRMs centralize all customer data, making it easier to manage and analyze.

5. Increased Efficiency and Productivity - Automation of repetitive tasks frees up time for employees to focus on more strategic activities.

Several CRM tools are well-suited for small businesses. Here are some of the most popular options:

1. HubSpot CRM - HubSpot offers a free CRM solution that includes features like contact management, email tracking, and sales pipeline management. It is user-friendly and integrates seamlessly with other HubSpot tools for marketing and sales.

2. Zoho CRM - Zoho CRM is a comprehensive and affordable option for small businesses. It offers features like lead management, sales automation, and analytics. Zoho CRM also provides a mobile app for managing customer relationships on the go.

3. Salesforce Essentials -Salesforce is one of the most popular companies in the world! Salesforce Essentials is designed specifically for small businesses. It includes features such as contact and account management, opportunity tracking, and email integration. Salesforce is highly customizable and scalable as your business grows.

4. Pipedrive -Pipedrive is a salesfocused CRM that helps small businesses manage their sales pipelines effectively. It offers features like deal management, activity reminders, and customizable pipelines. Pipedrive’s visual interface is intuitive and easy to use.

5. Freshsales - Freshsales, part of the Freshworks suite, provides an all-in-one CRM solution for small businesses. It includes features like lead scoring, email tracking, and automation. Freshsales also offers AI-based insights to help improve sales performance.

Steps for Implementing a CRM System

Implementing a CRM system can be complicated, but with careful planning and execution, it can significantly benefit your business. Here are the steps to successfully implement a CRM system:

1. Define Your Goals and Requirements

Before choosing a CRM system, it’s essential to define your goals and requirements. Consider the following questions: What do you want to achieve with the CRM system? What features are essential for your business? How many users will need access to the CRM? What is your budget for the CRM system?

3. Plan the Implementation Process

2. Choose the Right CRM Tool

Based on the type of business, your goals, and your requirements, research and select the CRM tool that best fits your business needs. Consider factors like ease of use, scalability, customer support, and integration with other tools you use.

Create a detailed plan for implementing the CRM system. This plan should include:

Timeline - Define the timeline for the implementation process, including key milestones. Team - Identify the team members responsible for the implementation, including a project manager and representatives from different departments.

Data Migration - Plan how you will migrate existing customer data to the new CRM system. Ensure data is clean and up-to-date before migration.

4. Customize the CRM System

Once you have selected and installed the CRM system, customize it to fit your business processes. This may include:

Custom Fields - Add custom fields to capture specific information relevant to your business.

Workflows - Set up workflows to automate repetitive tasks, such as follow-up emails or task assignments.

Reports and Dashboards - Create reports and dashboards to track key metrics and performance indicators.

5. Train Your Team

Training is crucial for successful CRM implementation. Provide comprehensive training to all users, covering:

System Navigation - Teach users how to navigate the CRM system and access the information they need.

Data Entry - Ensure users understand the importance of accurate data entry and how to input data correctly.

Features and Tools - Train users on how to use the various features and tools available in the CRM system.

In conclusion, Implementing a CRM system can transform the way small businesses manage customer relationships, leading to improved efficiency, increased sales, and enhanced customer satisfaction. By understanding the benefits of CRM systems, selecting the right tool, and following a structured implementation process, entrepreneurs can leverage CRM technology to build stronger customer relationships and drive business growth.
