Message from the Council
How do you define time, talent and treasure? At the Elms, we measure time in terms of the school year – 178 days, 6 ½ hours per day, the 2010-2011 school year. Time passes in classes, mods and quarters, not hours, days and weeks. This is Elms time. Our talent is vast and widespread. To see evidence of the breadth of talent located on the Elms campus, you need only look at our statistics: Lisa K. Massello High School/Middle School Principal
•
12th in the State, 1st in the Diocese of Cleveland and Summit County
•
95th percentile and above consistently for IOWA Test of Basic Skills in Reading and Language Arts in grades 1-6
•
42 highly qualified teachers
•
50+ non-profit organizations benefitting from the service work of all our students each year
•
Over 3,500 graduates making a difference in our world
This is the talent we have to offer.
Carli Kistler Miller ‘87
Executive Director of Operations
We have many treasures for which we are thankful. The blessing of our founding Dominican Sisters of Peace, the 357 diverse students who cross our thresholds each day, the tremendous dedication of volunteers and donors who help us sustain the level of excellence at the Elms, and the parents who entrust their daughters and sons to our care. This is the treasure we hold most dear. At the Elms, we define time, talent and treasure in terms of our students, parents, teachers, staff, alumnae, and donors. In the following pages we honor those who have selflessly given their time, talent and treasure to us this past year. This magazine serves as a heartfelt thank you to those who have given. No matter how little or big your time and treasure may be, we consider each moment, each gift to be a blessing. Your gift has helped to sustain the Elms as the cornerstone of single gender education in the Akron community. You are our treasure. Sincerely,
Marie Reichart ‘99

ver 350 attendees stepped into the 1970s on February 26, 2011 to eat, bid and boogie on February 26 at February Fantasy Fever 2011! Our Lady of the Elms raised over $190,000 to support Elms students. The Ralph Bernard $25,000 Scholarship Match brought in $64,000 total for scholarships and tuition assistance for the 2011-2012 school year. Kate Kleski ’93, Elms alumna and Board member, worked with her parents, Katherine and Wayne Kleski, who are the owners of Katherine’s Collections . The Kleski’s donated the decorations and transformed Our Lady of the Elms high school into a 1970s disco with disco balls, disco kissing fish, dancing lights, silver garland, dancing cubes and Andy Warhol-esque images of Cher, Elton John, John Lennon and Liza Minnelli. Guests were entertained by the Elms Encores show choir in addition to Cher, portrayed by Wayne Smith. Lucky auction winners Nancy Brennan and Steve Hopp each sang I Got You Babe with Cher. Guests also enjoyed hors d’oeuvre and dinner from Pazzo’s Catering. Sr. Arleen Kisiel, Elms Board member and the Akron Motherhouse Coordinator for the Dominican Sisters of Peace, started the evening with an invocation. Board Chairperson, Susan Flowers, introduced the Elms newest program, Elms Circle of Angels, which is a caring group of donors who wish to be contacted if a student or potential student is in need of tuition assistance. When contacted, Angels may choose whether
or not to support the student and at what level. (See page 30 for more information). Michael Beck and Kristin Beck Clark ’90, were in attendance as the first Angels for their four year sponsorship of an incoming freshman Elms girl. Carli Kistler-Miller ’87 thanked everyone involved with February Fantasy and recognized Susan Flowers, Steve Hopp and Lesley Weigand-McCauley ’89 for their dedication to the Elms Board of Trustees. Parent Leadership Awards were given to Renee Good by Lisa Massello and Michael Wilson by Marie Reichart ’99. February Fantasy 2011 would not have been such a great success without committee members Renee Good, Jacki Sampsel, Marianne Spiros, Suzane Nicholas, Kate Kleski ‘93, Michael Wilson, Kaye Rowe, Susan Flowers, Carli Kistler-Miller ‘87, Julie Forgach, Peggy Smith ’65 and a long list of adult and student volunteers. February Fantasy was kicked off with a groovy Patron Party planned by Anita Sears and held at Akrona Gallery on Feb 5, 2011. Major sponsors for February Fantasy included The Lehner Family Foundation, First Merit Wealth Management and AAA Akron Automobile Club and Travel Services. How much fun will next year be? Join us for Fantasy on March 17, 2012 and find out. (To ensure that you are on our Fantasy 2012 mailing list, please email psmith@theelms.org with your name and mailing address.) 5

First Book In December 2010, the Elms Elementary School community joined together to wrap donated books to give to the Akron Chapter of the non-profit organization First Book. This organization’s mission is to provide access to new books for children in need. As part of this mission project, our students learned about the importance of children having a set of books they can call their own from one of the First Book volunteers. In all, the Elementary School donated over 300 brand new books to the organization.

Scholarship Tea Chains of Love Elms Social Action Club sold paper chains to raise over $500 that bought food for families affected by AIDS.
The high school celebrated the scholarship recipients of our incoming class of 2015 during our annual Scholarship Tea in December. Mica Brooks ‘15 was one of the recipients in attendance with her parents, Kevin and Mandy. We look forward to welcoming the class of 2015 next fall!
Holiday Concert The High School Holiday Concert was a night filled with song and music. The 7th and 8th Grade Choir, Encores, and Chamber Choir, led by music teacher Maryrosa Hamed, participated in this program featuring different musical styles- from Classical to Broadway and culminating with an all-choir performance of Silent Night. The 7th and 8th Grade Choir led Silent Night while in total darkness. Their hands seem to float in the air as black lights lit their gloved hands while they signed in American Sign Language. Voices rang loud and clear as The Encores and Chambers joined them, the Chambers providing the descant. This beautiful song of peace and gratitude provided the finish to a wonderful evening.

Shelf Elf
Elementary students look for more than just books when they come each week to the library. They check the elven mailbox because, Miles and Millie, the two Elms Library elves, have been answering their letters since the elves have been away in Europe. It is always a delight to receive a personal letter from one of the Elms Library Elves.

Winter Sports Wrap-up Basketball “March Madness” was in the air!! The Panther basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a final home game against Ellet HS in a packed gymnasium. The atmosphere was electric!! Some highlights from the evening include performances by the Elms Chamber Choir and International Clubs, Senior Night Recognition, presentation to Crown Point from the Hoops for Habits Tournament…and let’s not forget two amazing games played by our very own Panther basketball teams. The Panthers raised the roof with a “buzzer beater basket” in the final seconds of the 4th quarter to seal the Varsity win!! The season ended with a first round tournament loss to the Smithville “Smithies”. Any sport fan knows one game does not define the team. However, one game was all it took to remind us of the unique bond the girls share with one another. The explosion of cheers and chants heard from the bench embodies their spirit. The girls call themselves the “Wolf Pack”, a theme adopted early in the season symbolizing “together as one”. Every player is a valued member of the team and played with the heart, determination and passion necessary to carry one another through the season. They embraced their roles as representatives of Our Lady of the Elms, and did so with integrity and honor. The Panthers finished the year with 13 wins and 7 losses.

Time & Talent Elaine Fippin – High School
The Elms is truly a home away from home for Elaine Fippin. In her twenty-third year as a teacher of English, speech, and theater, Mrs. Fippin can think of no better place to work. Her students and fellow colleagues continue to inspire her. Along with her esteemed department, Mrs. Fippin is proud of a robust curriculum and many enrichment opportunities. Each year, students in grades seven through twelve enjoy a professional theater production at Great Lakes Theater, and for three years, Great Lakes has brought a traveling production to our own stage. The Elms Speech Team has earned a fine reputation and many accolades during the Fippin era. Certainly Mrs. Fippin can’t forget the plays and musicals that have delighted audiences and brought joy to the director. The Elms community has offered so many professional and artistic opportunities to Mrs. Fippin, and she is genuinely grateful. But in the end, the special students who pass through her classroom door are the enduring blessings; whether quietly and diligently writing essays, or engaging in lively discussions, or rehearsing speeches and plays for the millionth time, students always make Mrs. Fippin want to be the best teacher possible.
Debbie Lorincz – Middle School
When one thinks of the Middle School program at the Elms, most likely, one of the first people you might think of is Mrs. Debbie Lorincz. Debbie has spearheaded the Middle School program for the past 18 years as the Middle School Director. She teaches 7th and 8th grade Social Studies as well as Advanced Placement United States History to juniors. Some of her responsibilities include overseeing Convocation, MS Student Council, and 8th Grade Graduation. She has also organized the “Glory Girls” – 7th and 8th grade volunteers to raise and lower the flag outside the high school office entrance. As part of her Social Studies program, Mrs. Lorincz has incorporated a trip to Williamsburg every other year for her students and parents. She loves working with this age group so much. Debbie finds the students to be enthusiastic, motivated, and eager to learn. She loves being “stuck” in Middle School forever and feels blessed to be part of the Elms community!
Rose Gullo - Preschool
Rose Gullo is currently in her 21st year of teaching Pre-school at Our Lady of the Elms. She believes she was destined to be an Elms teacher and has loved each of her years here on campus. When she was four years old, her cousin Grace Musci Marcotte from the class of 1957 used to bring her to visit the Sisters at the Convent. Although she still wishes she had the opportunity to have attended the Elms as a student, she considers herself privileged to teach the young girls and boys in the Elms Pre-school. She especially loves witnessing them grow into fine young ladies as they pray at Mass, compete in a CYO sport, and perform in the school plays. To Rose, there is nothing better than hearing of the success her past students experience in high school and college. Rose shares a special moment that captures the happiness teaching at the Elms has brought her: “I was especially touched one day when I was Christmas shopping at Summit Mall and I was stopped by one of my current Pre-school students and then another “Pre-schooler” who was a freshman at Loyola University in Chicago. She saw me and reintroduced herself after 16 years. Wow! I love the Elms!”
Judi Buzzi- Elementary School
When Judi Buzzi was a child she thought she’d be anything but a teacher. Her career aspirations seemed to change with the wind but in reality it was tied to whatever book she was enthralled with at the time. Books and children have been her lifelines from her earliest memories. Our Lady of the Elms has been Judi’s home over the last four years. It has been and continues to be a nurturing and collaborative environment in which she been able to put her personal and professional beliefs into daily practice. As an educator, she feels she has been blessed with many opportunities and challenges. Her professional journey started simply here in Akron with Head Start and then on to Washington where she worked in a public school with many social challenges and limited resources. After teaching for six years, her mother challenged her to enter a masters program. It was with her encouragement that Judi attended Harvard University. Her experiences there enabled her to return to Washington and work for Communities and Schools, Inc. as the Director of Training. In this position, Judi came to see the importance of enabling children to see themselves as learners. She never imagined that her work as a teacher would take her from a kindergarten classroom to Harvard and then the White House. She is proud to say that she helped to expand the America Reads and DC Reads programs. When Judi decided to return home to Akron, she found a position at University of Akron. When funding for her position ended, Judi wanted to return to the classroom and the Elms offered her a position. Children and books...back to her lifelines and true love. In Judi’s own words: “I am grateful to be in a place which values children, celebrates learning, reflects on practice, and encourages questioning.” We are grateful she is here at The Elms as well.

Catherine Szary ‘60 Elms Alumnae Gives Back
Nearly 40 years ago, Ms. Catherine M. Szary (Cathy) graduated from Our Lady of the Elms. Even though she graduated and moved on with her life, she never forgot her alma mater. Cathy always spoke highly of Our Lady of the Elms and enjoyed being a part of the Elms family. She also consistently made annual gifts to the Elms Fund for Excellence to support the Elms ongoing mission: Our Lady of the Elms, an independent, Catholic school rooted in the Dominican tradition, educates girls and young women to listen openly, evaluate wisely, speak bravely, lead justly, and serve compassionately. Cathy believed that “the school relies on philanthropy in order to advance academic excellence and that it was important to give back what little I could afford each time”. While nearly 75% of the Elms’ operational budget is covered by tuition, the additional 25% necessary for operational costs must be covered through generous donations. The operating budget pays for teachers’ salaries, classroom supplies, extracurricular activities, campus maintenance, and so many other costs associated with educating an Elms girl. Cathy liked the idea of a single-gender education because it helps to guide girls and young women to find their voice, while focusing on the many ways they learn and grow. It’s not just in the classroom. It’s the combination of the Elms community, the culture and the expectations that our school instills, that makes the education the Elms offers such a powerful and transformative experience. Over the years, Cathy’s generosity supported Our Lady of the Elms in many ways. She gave of her treasure by supporting the Elms Fund for Excellence. She gave of her time by volunteering or participating in events on Campus like the Blessing of the Animals with her dog, Skipper. Cathy recently passed away, yet she continues to passionately support Our Lady of the Elms efforts to educate future women leaders. Cathy made a generous planned gift, investing in the future of the Elms because she knew that students being educated at the Elms today will become the leaders of tomorrow. Each gift made to Our Lady of the Elms through the Elms Fund for Excellence or through Planned Gifts, provides unique opportunities for our students. We hope you will consider supporting Our Lady of the Elms with a planned gift. Your participation sustains the Elms experience throughout the year – and our traditions through all the years. For more information about supporting the Elms Fund for Excellence or to make a Planned Gift, please contact Julie Forgach, the Director of Institutional Advancement at 330.867.0751 or Jforgach@theelms.org. 20

Annual Report 2009-2010 Elms Fund for Excellence 2010-2011 Elms mission and support the unique educational experience that it provides. Your gift provides vital support to the immediate operating budget of Our Lady of the Elms and helps to ensure that many of the departments, programs and teams get the funds they need to provide a college preparatory experience of the highest quality while maintaining a balanced budget.
YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DISTINCT DIFFERENCE!
WHAT IS THE ELMS FUND FOR EXCELLENCE? The Elms Fund for Excellence, is the most popular way that alumnae, parents and friends support the school. The Elms Fund for Excellence directly supports the unique intellectual adventure at Our Lady of the Elms. Tuition covers about 71% of the cost of this education. The remaining 29% comes from generous donor support - including gifts from you. Gifts made to the Elms Fund for Excellence provide budget relieving support to some of the most important areas on campus including tuition assistance, academic support, athletic programs, student activities, and campus maintenance. Gifts to the Elms Fund for Excellence are expended in the same fiscal year in which they are received. All students, whether or not they receive financial aid, benefit from gifts made to the Elms Fund for Excellence by alumnae, parents and friends.
WHY SHOULD I GIVE / WHY IS THE ELMS FUND FOR EXCELLENCE SO IMPORTANT? Our Lady of the Elms School strives to be recognized as the center for academic excellence and women’s leadership in Northeast Ohio, and to be financially accessible to all qualified girls who desire the Elms experience. A gift to Our Lady of the Elms supports the continuation of academic excellence and the many girl-centered programs and initiatives that make us a premier educational institution and provider for our community. Making one or more gifts every year makes a statement to corporations and foundations that you believe in Our Lady of the 22
Philanthropy is a vital source of revenue. Your generosity allows Our Lady of the Elms to sustain and enhance our tradition of excellence in educating outstanding students. We invite you to invest in the Elms because it is only with ongoing and generous support that we can maintain our academic excellence. • Gifts to Our Lady of the Elms are investments that will reap extraordinary academic, athletic and societal dividends. • Every dollar you contribute to the Elms Fund for Excellence benefits each student attending Our Lady of the Elms. • You are helping to keep tuition lower in order for more families to send their child to a Dominican school. • Corporations and foundations look to the total percentage of donor participation in giving before choosing who they will support - 100% participation is best. We are proud to share that we have 100% participation from our Board Members, Faculty & Staff. • Your gift is tax-deductible. • You will be recognized in the Our Lady of the Elms Annual Report.

Information Technology @ the Elms By Dan McGee, Director of Technology
Technology in the 21st century has proven to be an essential tool in nearly every aspect of our lives. Just as the Elms meets the challenge of academic excellence in subject areas present in the school since its founding, new technologies have become mainstream in the world and the classroom. The ideas of 21st century skills relating to technology, creativity, and research are currently being firmly embedded in the academic fabric of our school. In terms of educational and administrative technology at the Elms, we have successfully remained ahead of other similar institutions. Our basic information technology infrastructure continues to be evaluated with the goal of exceptional education in mind. In late 2010, we were able to complete a seamless switchover of the Elms’ phone system, while adding phones to classrooms. This project will enable a cost savings to the School. Students in grades 9-12 were given Elms email accounts, and all students were provided with Elms-branded Google Docs accounts, furthering our focus on empowering and educating through technology. In looking to the future, a group of parents, students, and faculty recently came together to discuss feasibility of a One to One laptop program. The faculty at the Elms uses technology in engaging ways. Each classroom in the Elementary School is outfitted with a SmartBoard interactive whiteboard, while almost all the High School classrooms have SmartBoards. An Elementary School teacher is blogging with her students, teaching them how to collaborate online in today’s society with peers as well as experts in the field of science and technology. English and World Language classes in the High School use Moodle to take their class discussions online and address students’ multiple intelligences. Technology use at our school introduces a host of needs. Examples of current school technology needs include, replacing current computer hardware for students and teachers, software upgrades, SmartTables for the preschool, and keeping faculty and staff current on technology trends and developments. We function as an educational community with the goal of giving our students the tools needed to succeed in their future careers – some of which are not yet in existence. If you are interested in helping Our Lady of the Elms with any of our Technology needs, please contact Julie Forgach, Director of Institutional Advancement at 330.867.0751 or JForgach@TheElms.org.

A: I love getting to know the girls in the various grades. I enjoy how open and receptive the teachers and staff are to the volunteers. I always learn something new from Mr. DeFrange while working with him in the library. Q: What has surprised you most about working with the Elms? A: I feel appreciated! Most volunteer jobs are thankless, but not at the Elms! Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with the Elms?: A: It is rewarding to be involved where one is appreciated. The environment is friendly and welcoming. Volunteers are given the opportunity to put their ideas into action. Don’t wait to be asked - just jump in! The smiling faces on the kids makes it all worthwhile.
Nancy K. Allen
Occupation: Work at home, and part-time university student Children: Six children, but Bridget, the youngest, is the only one at home Length of Family Association with the Elms: The four years Bridget has attended the Elms high school Length of Volunteer Service with the Elms: Weekly, the past two years and yearly - February Fantasy Volunteering Areas: The Spirit Shop, and whatever is needed (library, February Fantasy books, etc) Q: Why did you want to be a volunteer with the Elms and what were your expectations? A: I wanted to help out the school that was educating our daughter, especially knowing that tuition does not cover all the school’s needs, and even more, with the economic downturn I knew that I could give more time than money. I also wanted to be a part of my daughter’s life in a special way as she was getting ready to leave for college. Not that we have long conversations at school - just seeing and knowing some of her friends, teachers and staff was enjoyable for me. Q: What has surprised you most about working with the Elms? A: The friendly and relaxed feel I sense at the Elms. I know I am not in the classroom where it is most intense for the students, but at least at lunch, in the halls, and speaking to the staff in the office, there are always smiles! Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with the Elms? A: Do it. Even if you can’t be regular, do what you can to become a part of the Elms community and meet the “behind the scenes” workers. Be a part of your daughter’s life, as these years fly by before you know it. Even if you don’t have a daughter here, the contact with the young people is encouraging and enjoyable.

Q: Why did you want to be a volunteer with the Elms and what were your expectations? A: I truly feel that it is both a privilege and a duty to be a volunteer at the Elms! The school gives so much to my girls and I want to give a little back. I appreciate the time that I can spend volunteering at The Elms and it helps me to show my girls that they and their school are important to me!
Q: Why did you want to be a volunteer with the Elms and what were your expectations? A: I initially became involved at The Elms because of my children - this is our first year at The Elms and it is important to me that I be involved in their education and school. I found very quickly that The Elms is a great place to be and an extraordinary place to spend time and have found more opportunities to volunteer (Girls on the Run, guest reading, special project with Ms. Buzzi’s class). I find the more time I spend at The Elms, the more time I want to spend at The Elms.
Occupation: Children’s Librarian Children: Katie ‘11, Annie ‘14, Danny (age 9) Length of Volunteer Service with the Elms: four years Volunteering Areas: Library Volunteer, February Fantasy Volunteer, Open House Volunteer, Author! Q: What has surprised you most about working with the Elms? A: It really takes very little time to be a big help at the Elms. I am only there once or twice a month but I know my help is appreciated. It is amazing how quickly the faculty, staff, other volunteers and students know your name and greet you when you are there. Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with the Elms? A: JUST DO IT! We live in Strongsville and my drive is 45 minutes one way. It is a sacrifice for me to make my way to the Elms to volunteer but it is well worth the time, effort and gas money! I know it means a lot to my girls to see me at school and these four years pass so quickly and you certainly can’t get these years back once they are off on their own!

I love that I am always greeted by smiling faces, I love that children are learning and growing, and the energy in the building is uplifting! I love being in my children’s classrooms AND I love working with the girls at The Elms - the students are delightfully bright and the teachers are wonderfully nurturing! I love the way the school nurtures young girls, I love the positivity in the building, and I enjoy getting to know the school community, teachers, and students. Q: What has surprised you most about working with the Elms? A: I am consistently in awe of the positivity and focus on service in the building - every teacher, every staff member, and every student is focused on learning, on serving others, and being the best person they can be - it’s not that I was surprised by this, but that I am always impressed by the commitment and compassion in the school. Always. It is an amazing place!

My hope is to provide a place of presence to the girls, and to alleviate some of the stress from the staff. Q: What about being a volunteer with the Elms do you find satisfying? A: Everything--it is a place of giving, a place of learning, and a place of spirituality. Q: What has surprised you most about working with the Elms? A: That all that is advertised is true---the Dominican Pillars are clear in the staff and students you meet. The girls learn like girls and are taught like girls, to become their very best self. The energy is positive, exciting, and filled with Spirit. The girls obviously love learning there, I see it in their presence in the library, in the halls, and even at lunch in the commons--they always are full of life. Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with the Elms? A: DO IT! Your daughter is only in school for a short time compared to her lifetime. It gives you the opportunity to see your girls in action, and to give back to an amazing school that is offering the opportunity for your daughter to become her very best self.

Dominican Sisters of Peace Sr. Maryagnes Slattery, OP ‘42
Sr. M. Eileen Pentecost, OP
Sr. Maryagnes Slattery (Sr. M. Robert) died on Monday, November 22, 2010, at the age of 87 at Regina Health Center (Richfield, OH) in her 67th year of religious profession. She was born in Akron, OH, and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Regan Slattery; she was one of ten children. Maryagnes entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron on June 20, 1941, from St. Paul Parish; graduated from Our Lady of the Elms High School in 1942; and made religious profession as Sr. M. Robert on July 25, 1943. She earned a BSE from St. John College (Cleveland, OH) in 1955.
Sr. M. Eileen Pentecost (92) died on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Regina Health Center (Richfield, Ohio) in her 73rd year of religious profession. Rosemary Pentecost was born on April 24, 1918, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Frank and Helen Mae (Rothenburg Pentecost. Because of her father’s job with BF Goodrich Rubber Company, Rosemary and her family moved to Akron when she was young. On October 4, 1936, Rosemary entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Akron from St. Paul Parish, making her Profession of Vows as Sr. Eileen on June 26, 1938.
May 27, 1923 – November 22, 2010
For 32 years, Sr. Maryagnes ministered in education, mostly as a primary teacher at schools in Ohio, including St. Joseph (Alliance), St. Augustine (Barberton), St. Hilary and Our Lady of the Elms (Akron), SS. Peter & Paul (Doylestown), and St. Felicitas (Cleveland). She excelled in teaching reading, numbers, and writing and in preparing second graders for their first reconciliation and Eucharist. Some of her former students have said that she was the best teacher they had. Her positive attitude, smiling face, and infectious laugh won her many friends among her students, their parents, and the Sisters with whom she lived. After leaving the classroom in 1975, she served the elderly in the inner city of Cleveland as activities director at St. Martin de Porres Center. By her hearty laugh and gentle manner, she endeared herself to those to whom she ministered. In 1977, Sr. Maryagnes moved to Denver, CO, where she ministered as activities director for senior citizens at City Park Manor. After becoming certified as a pastoral minister, she served for ten years as part of a 15-member pastoral team at St. Anthony Hospital. She was also involved with the hospital’s bereavement ministry and worked with patients suffering from cancer; the hospital later honored her for her outstanding service. In 1989, Sr. Maryagnes became chaplain at Mercy Medical Center in Denver. She returned to Akron in 1996 and volunteered at the Elms Wellness Center and at Rockynol Nursing Home before retiring to Regina Health Center in 2002.
April 24, 1918 – February 26, 2011
Sr. Eileen earned a BA from Mercyhurst College (Erie, PA) and an MA from St. John College (Cleveland, OH). Her ministry in education brought her to serve in many schools throughout Ohio. She began her ministry as a teacher at Our Lady of the Elms Elementary School (Akron) and Immaculate Conception (Wooster), and she later became principal at St. Bernard (Akron) and St. Augustine (Barberton). Sr. Eileen also ministered as the school supervisor of the Diocese of Cleveland. In addition to her many years in education, Sr. Eileen served several times in congregational positions. She was elected to the congregation’s Council in 1957 and later became Major Superior for six years. In 1974, Sr. Eileen moved to Youngstown, OH, where she served as the assistant superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Youngstown for 15 years. She was also appointed to head the Evangelization Office in the Diocese and was a mission education consultant. Later, Sr. Eileen volunteered with various organizations in Oak Park, IL, and Cleveland, OH, where she often tutored adults in reading. In 2003, she retired to the Akron Motherhouse, and due to her failing health, moved to Regina Health Center in 2006. Sr. Eileen was always gracious and inviting to everyone with whom she came in contact. She enjoyed life and always seemed to embrace its many challenges. Her sense of humor, her storytelling, and her writings (including her poetry) endeared her to her Sisters, family, and friends.
Sr. M. Laura Wallace, OP February 8, 1922 – December 31, 2010
Sr. Laura Wallace (88) died on Friday, December 31, 2010, at Regina Health Center, Richfield, Ohio, in her 70th year of religious profession. Born to William and Laura Wallace in Alliance, OH, she was one of four children. Laura entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of St. Dominic in Akron, OH, on September 8, 1938, and made her Profession of Vows in 1940. Sr. Laura’s ministry in education brought her to serve in various schools and parishes throughout Ohio: St. Dominic (Youngstown), St. Joseph (Alliance), Immaculate Conception (Ravenna), St. Felicitas (Cleveland), Our Lady of the Elms Elementary (Akron), and St. Vincent (Akron). She also served for three years as principal of St. Hilary School (Akron) and for 21 years as a first-grade teacher at St. Joseph’s in Mantua. In 1990, after ministering for nearly 50 years in education, Sr. Laura turned to her great love for land and joined the staff at Crown Point Ecology Center in Bath, where she brought her enthusiasm for protecting planet Earth. Sr. Laura played a major role in the success of the Center by conducting workshops, teaching basket weaving and quilting, planting seeds for the crops, growing flowers for the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, and maintaining the flower and children’s gardens. Sr. Laura also made garlands and wreaths from materials grown at Crown Point, conducted tours of the farm, and used her sewing skills to create a quilt that was always donated for Taste of Earth, the Center’s annual dinner and fundraiser. In 2001, Sr. Laura also volunteered as comoderator of the Friends of the Elms, and also utilized her talents to create blankets for the poor and take on projects to benefit Crown Point and the Elms. In 2009, the Women’s History Project presented the Faith Award to Sr. Laura in honor of her work in the community to better the lives of others. Aside from her leadership and work in the classroom, at Crown Point, and in the community, Sr. Laura will be remembered for the many local gardens for which she was the inspiration, and for her work with local volunteers to whom she readily offered her wisdom and knowledge. 35

Alumnae Spotlight Nnenna Ofobike ‘97 Y
et again, I am one of only a handful of women in a restaurant full of diplomats, peacekeepers, and businesspeople drawn to the West African nation of Liberia to assist in (or profit from) its recovery from more than a decade of civil war. As the West and North Africa Program Officer for the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, I manage the United States’ humanitarian responses to refugee crises—in Liberia, to the recent inflow of more than 70,000 refugees from neighboring Côte d’Ivoire. Liberia is the home of strong and resilient women, most notably Africa’s first woman President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, so naturally it makes me think of the Elms. I arrived at the Elms a timid 8th grader and recent transplant from Litchfield Middle School in West Akron. At OLE, I was impressed by strong girls who have since become strong women; inspired by creative and committed teachers like Mrs. Kermizis and Mrs. Fippin; and introduced to a rich spiritual life under the guidance of devoted religion teachers and through the life-changing Kairos retreat that I undertook as a Junior and Senior. I believe the Elms made a woman more comfortable in her skin and with being principled and assertive even when social convention suggests that young ladies should behave otherwise. I graduated in 1997 and went on to The Ohio State University where I graduated with honors in Political Science in 2001. I completed my Master’s degree in Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, concentrating on political and economic development in less-developed countries. Since then, I have worked in the interest of displaced populations seeking asylum and refuge wherever they can find it, from Algeria to Arlington, VA; Mauritania to Minneapolis; Ethiopia and Chicago to right here in Liberia. I represent the generous people of the United States whose tax dollars help provide food, shelter, medicine and clean water to persecuted peoples all over the world. I credit my Elms experience for helping me to be strong enough to advocate for the needs of these people in crisis and compassionate enough to speak tenderly to the most traumatized.
