SCHOOL SONG

O Ellerslie, O Ellerslie, Source of light and education

O Ellerslie, O Ellerslie, Fount of meek illumination. The hills beyond with halls sublime, Encourage, exhort wise use of time, While neighbouring factories supply Scope in plenty for deft hands to try.

O Ellerslie, O Ellerslie, Generous alma mater benign,

O Ellerslie, O Ellerslie, You nurture and imbue the mind. Sons and daughters in their station Will find deep pride in this our nation And torches be diffusing light Beacons fair for those pursuing right

Lyrics: Mrs. Yvonne Forde

Music: Mr. Irvin Harris

Date of entering Ellerslie

To the new members of our school family, I join with the other family members of The Ellerslie School to applaud you for making this noble institution the chosen school to gain new and exciting educational experiences. Parents, guardians and children, I welcome you all to the school that espouses wise use of time. You are now part of a school family who endeavours to embrace the affirmations of the School’s Positive Behavioural Programme (SPBMP):

¨ I am Wise

¨ I am Industrious

¨ I am Service-Oriented

¨ I am Exemplary

I implore you to encourage your child to use every opportunity that is given at this school to learn. Let him/her know that success can only be reaped if he or she stays focused on the real reason for schooling and that what is required is a concentrated effort to focus on studies. This handbook will be very useful throughout the educational journey and we expect that you will refer to it as a guide.

Additionally, any matter of concern can be addressed by reaching out to any school official via email or you are free to contact the school’s office. Once again, I thank you for choosing this school that has helped to produce many wise men and women who are making significant contributions to this country and the world at large.

Mrs. Andrea Baptiste Ready! Set! Go!

Let’s make wise use of our time!

HISTORY

The Ellerslie School is located in Black Rock, St. Michael. The area occupied by the school was once part of The Ellerslie Plantation.

Construction of the school commenced in l965 and Ellerslie Comprehensive, as it was then called, opened fully on September 26 1966, under the leadership of Mr. Cuthbert Brathwaite, Headmaster, and Mr. William Isaacs, Acting Deputy Headmaster (both now deceased).

The records indicate that the first pupils, 181 boys and 151 girls, were admitted in September 1966 with 16 members of staff. The pupils came from feeder schools: St. Stephen’s Junior, Montgomery Boys’, Good Shepherd Primary and Edghill Memorial Girls’, who ranged in age from 11 to 13.

The roll of the school increased significantly to 1420 by September 1970 and over 1700 by September 1971.

Some classes had to be housed at the Farm Annex in Deacon's Road under the leadership of Mr. Edward Straughan and a staff of six other teachers.

Additional classrooms and an Assembly Hall were constructed in 1971. The hall was officially opened on April 29th, 1971 by the Minister of Education, Hon. Erskine Sandiford.

Five years later extensions were added to the school buildings, which were officially declared open by the Hon. Louis Tull, Minister of Education, on September 29 1976.

Located in the Stanmore district of Black Rock, St Michael, a modern comprehensive Secondary School was established September 26 1966. It was designed and built on the site of the former Ellerslie sugar plantation. A school emblem was crafted and utilized faithfully through the years until, of necessity in September 2017, new educational and performance guidelines were developed. The facility was renamed The Ellerslie School. Heraldic Artist Ann Rudder was commissioned to reformulate elements of the original School Crest’ with additions supplied from the faculty and students themselves.

As stated the school is located on the grounds of the old Ellerslie sugar estate. This name was probably transferred from original owner documents as Ellerslie is an ancient village in the west central lowlands of Scotland. More than one hundred and forty places in Barbados have names acquired via early settlers from the British Isles. A small original portion of the Halletts Plantation featured a then working windmill. This historic feature is designed uppermost on the new badge. In past times, the clockwork action of the four canvas sail-blades would grind thousand fold scores of Saccharum sugarcane ratoons depicted on the right of the logo. It is believed that Col. Henry Drax first cultivated cane species from Brazil into Barbados circa 1637. This is one of the first “cash crops” of Barbados, as three international commodities of Rum, Sugar and Molasses established the wealth of the empire.

On the left of the badge, three blooms of Caesalpinia pulcherrima, commonly known as the national “Pride of Barbados” flower are depicted. This decorative shrub, rendered in its orange/yellow variety is cultivated throughout tropical regions and utilized widely as a demarcation hedge or decorative ‘fence’. To these newly chosen symbols, the original design and motto text are centrally placed. The traditional “Open Book” is supreme. It is the emblem of Intellectual Freedom as the motto: “Make Wise Use Of Your Time”, is central to personal creativity and scholarly intention.

The original school Motto, , “Tempore Sapienter Utere” is included on the fabric ribbon that also displays the School ‘s name. The shape of the book is similar to “stone tablets” the earliest form of carved text knowledge. The new School Badge is designed as a Circular emblem, and as such exemplifies a protected space where ‘All Participants Are Equal.’ With remembrance of its history and timely focus forward, The Ellerslie School offers a firm future for all students who attend this noble institution.
